A!Lidabida!Balancing!! Megumi!Nishida!
! The!song!which!I!chose!is!the!answer!to!“How!do!you!eat!well?”!I!taught!my!younger!sister! and!a!Japanese!friend!who!is!in!America!for!studying!abroad!on!December!9!and!12!respectively.! The!reason!why!I!chose!this!song!is!because!I!would!like!to!share!the!idea!of!the!importance!of! keeping!a!balance.!It!can!be!balance!between!school!and!part!time!jobs,!family!and!friend,!oneself! and!others.!Also,!one!of!singing!points!‘lidabida’!would!help!them!pronounce!English!better!as!if! they!were!a!native!English!speaker.!In!addition!to!it,!the!melody!comes!from!a!Christmas!song,!so! they!can!feel!like!enjoying!Christmas!and!a!Christmas!party!for!sure.!This!means!they!can!be!much! happier!singing!this!song.! ! It!is!relatively!easy!to!remember!the!song!but!understanding!‘lidabida’!might!be!difficult! especially!for!my!sister!because!she!had!never!cared!about!pronunciation!before.!While!I!taught! this!song,!she!was!really!surprised!at!her!own!pronunciation.!She!said!that!she!wants!to!know! many!more!tips!to!pronounce!English!well.!I!said!“me,!too!”!Then!I!started!singing!the!song!with! gestures!again.!It!took!a!longer!time!than!I!expected!because!of!‘new!pronunciation’!for!her.! However,!she!repeated!the!song!with!the!gestures!many!times.!As!a!result,!she!could!sing!it!by! herself!in!a!day.!After!that,!my!sister!and!I!showed!the!song!to!our!mother.!Actually!my!mother!didn’t! understand!any!English!words!but!she!said!‘It!is!a!Christmas!song,!isn’t!it?!It!is!an!enjoyable!song.!I! like!it.’!We!were!all!filled!with!happiness.! ! When!I!taught!this!song!to!my!friend,!I!used!Skype.!It!was!not!easy!to!get!in!touch!with!her! because!of!time!difference!and!computer!trouble.!However,!her!English!level!was!high!so!she! understood!what!I!sang!promptly.!She!practiced!singing!it!using!gestures!with!me!for!a!while.! Therefore,!she!could!sing!it!alone!in!10!minutes.!At!the!same!time,!she!realized!the!importance!of! balancing!her!life.!She!sometimes!feels!lonely,!so!she!should!keep!contact!with!her!family!and! friends!to!be!released!from!nervousness!and!loneliness.!Through!our!conversation!and!singing,! she!surprised!me,!and!I!noticed!that!she!has!a!good!memory,!and!has!improved!her!English!skills! as!well!as!communication!level.!I!was!so!happy!to!have!such!a!fulfilling!time!with!her.!I!will!meet!her! next!month,!so!I!would!like!to!ask!her!“How!do!you!eat!well?”!and!sing!the!song!together.!In!addition! to!this!song,!I!will!teach!her!my!other!favorite!songs.! ! I!am!so!happy!to!take!this!class!and!find!many!positive!effects!of!music.!Moreover,!I! remember!numerous!songs!which!have!strong!messages!in!each!of!them.!I!would!like!to!share! these!songs!more!and!more!to!the!people!around!me!and!share!happiness.! ! ~!Diversify!and!Balance!Your!Life~! Shibata!Yuri!
! I!asked!my!mother,!to!do!the!case!of!study!with!me.!I!chose!her!because!she!is!interested!in! many! things.! Such! as,! Korean! (culture,! drama! and! language),! my! dog’s! care! and! handcrafts.! Actually,!she!has!different!activities!every!day.!She!knows!that!something!to!try!is!good!for!us!to! make! our! life! more! diverse.! And! I! wanted! to! create! the! opportunity! to! sing! a! song! in! English,! because! she! doesn’t! like! English! for! a! long! time.! I! decided! to! teach! the! “How! do! you! eat! well?”! song!to!her.! ! On!the!first!day!(December!7!th),!I!started!teaching!by!singing!the!song!to!help!her!remember!the! melody.!She!recognized!the!melody!was!a!Christmas!tune.!And!I!translated!the!song!in!Japanese! because!I!thought!if!we!sing!a!song!for!foreign!language,!we!want!to!know!the!lyric’s!meaning.!After! that,!she!wrote!the!lyrics!on!a!paper.!She!looked!at!the!paper!when!we!practice!the!song.!Then! later!she!put!the!paper!on!the!toilet!wall.!We!sang!it!about!15!times.!She!worked!hard!on!it.! On! the! next! day! (December! 8th),! I! asked! her! “How! do! you! eat! well?”! However,! she! forgot! the! words!“diversify”!and!“balance”.!Then!I!used!two!strategies.!First,!I!explained!the!words!meaning.! For!example,!“diversify”!is!a!verb.!I!asked!her,!“Have!you!ever!heard!the!ODAIBA!diversity?”!It!is!a! name! of! shopping! center! in! Tokyo.! She! suddenly! understood! it! and! very! surprised! because! the! word!shape!is!different!but!these!are!same!meaning.!Secondly,!I!taught!the!gesture!and!rhythm.! When!we!sang!the!song!with!gestures,!we!could!remember!the!lyrics!easily.!Sometimes!she!used! the!paper!when!we!sang!the!song.! ! ! After!that!day,!I!randomly!asked!her!“How!do!you!eat!well?”!in!my!house.!She!could!sing!the!song! smoothly! without! the! paper.! And! she! mastered! the! gesture! too.! I! was! very! happy! about! her! success.! ! ! ! I!really!enjoyed!doing!this!case!study!because!I!can!sing!with!my!mother!in!English.!It!was!the! first!time!to!sing!a!song!in!foreign!language!with!her.!Music!has!the!power!to!make!people!happy! and!create!opportunities!for!special!moments.!Through!this!activity,!my!mother!is!again!interested! in!English!and!she!wants!to!sing!this!song!at!Christmas!because!the!melody!was!a!Christmas!tune.! Gesturing!Mother!Learns!Happiness!Song! Ayuka!Tsukamoto!
! I!chose!to!teach!the!5!ways!to!happiness.!The!reason!why!I!chose!this!song!is!I!love!this! song!and!I!think!this!song!has!power!to!encourage!people.!This!song!has!gestures!so!I!want!to! teach!this!song!face[to[face!rather!than!call.!I!think!my!friend!is!good!to!teach!because!many!senior! students! taught! to! their! friends.! However! I! have! part! time! job! and! my! friends! also! has! their! schedules!so!I!avoid!to!teach!my!friends.!That!is!why!I!chose!the!person!who!I!meet!frequently,!my! mother.! She! can’t! speak! English! but! she! likes! to! listen! to! English! lyrics! song.! Furthermore,! she! loves!singing!!She!practices!“minyou”,!Japanese!traditional!song,!twice!a!week.!She!participated! some!competition!and!she!became!the!champion.!I!was!sure!she!would!enjoy!singing!the!song.! ! First,!on!December!1st,!I!will!explain!to!this!project!to!my!mother!at!home!after!lunch.!She! was!little!worried!about!to!memorize!the!English!lyrics.!I!encouraged!her!to!this!song!has!gesture!so! it!is!easy!to!memorize.!At!first!I!showed!only!the!gesture!without!words!and!ask!her!to!guess!it,! same! as! we! did! in! the! class.! She! could! almost! understand! all! the! meanings! because! of! the! gestures.!She!was!impressed!by!the!expression!“smile!from!ear!to!ear”!because!there!is!not!such! an!expression!in!Japanese.!After!guessing!the!gestures,!I!sang!the!song!for!her.!This!day!I!didn’t! ask!her!to!sing!the!song!because!I!thought!it!was!too!much!for!her.!I!sang!the!song!and!she!did!the! gestures!with!me.! Second!day,!on!December!8th,!I!taught!the!song!for!her!again.!I!couldn’t!have!enough!time! to!teach!so!it!passed!1!week!since!I!taught!first.!I!thought!maybe!she!forgot!the!song!and!gestures.! However!she!remembered!the!gestures.!This!day!I!taught!the!lyrics!to!her.!I!wrote!it!on!the!paper! and! we! sang! the! song! while! looking! it.! We! sang! sometimes,! then! she! suddenly! remembered! something! and! went! her! room! and! came! back! with! a! CD! of! the! original! song! “The! 12! Days! of! Christmas”.!She!played!it!and!we!sang!again!with!the!CD!melody.!CD’s!song!speed!was!a!little!bit! fast! so! we! sang! once! by! ourselves! and! then! sang! once! with! the! CD.! It! was! difficult! for! her! to! pronounce!“look!up!at!the!sky”.!She!tended!to!say!each!word!like!“look/up/at/the/sky”!so!I!taught! like!“lookup/a(t)the/sky”.!She!sang!the!song!while!doing!housework.!This!song!is!easy!to!hum.!She! sang!again!and!again,!finally!she!could!sing!the!song!by!herself!with!gesture.! ! Nowadays!she!started!to!new!job!so!she!was!tired!every!day.!However,!while!singing!the! song!she!really!enjoyed!it.!She!laughed!when!she!did!different!gestures!for!different!words!and!she! could!sing!correctly.!I!think!singing!the!song!makes!people!happy!but!this!song!has!more!influence! on!us!than!another!songs.!We!can!easily!try!to!do!5!ways!in!our!daily!life.!I’m!sure!it!is!good!for!us.! !

I!chose!my!mother,!as!my!student.!I!selected!‘How!do!you!have!a!good!life?’!for!my!case! study!project.!The!song!is!about!human[life!so!I!think!adults!should!know!the!lyrics!of!the!beautiful! song!because!they!have!had!many!experiences!of!human!relations!in!their!lives!like!family,!friends! and!partners.!That!is!the!reason!why!I!selected!my!mother!and!the!song.!I!taught!my!mother!for! three!days.! !! The!first!day,!I!told!her!the!meanings!of!the!lyrics!and!the!reason!why!I!chose!the!song!and!I! sang!and!she!followed!me.!At!first,!I!explained!to!her!that!each!song!has!meanings!and!this!song’s! meaning!is!“making!new!friends!is!worth!a!silver!and!also!keeping!the!old!friends!is!the!same!as! gold,! so! we! have! to! cherish! all! our! friends.”! Then,! my! mother! realized! a! point! that! the! song’s! meaning! is! similar! to! the! word,! ‘Onko[Chishin( )’! which! is! written! in! the! Analects! of! Confucius.!It!means!developing!new!ideas!based!on!study!of!the!past.!She!also!said!that!the!world! is!big!enough!so!the!important!ideas!are!the!same!all!over!the!world.!I!did!not!notice!that.!I!felt!that!if! I!did!not!teach!her!the!song,!I!would!not!be!able!to!get!the!idea.! ! After!that!I!taught!the!pronunciation!and!sang!as!a!model.!She!liked!singing!so!she!could! follow!easily.!At!last,!we!sang!the!song!three!times!however!she!could!not!memorize!the!song!yet.! ! On!the!next!day,!before!teaching,!I!asked!her!to!sing!the!song!herself!with!the!lyric!sheet.! But!she!had!not!memorized!the!melody!yet!and!the!pronunciation.!After!that,!we!reviewed!the!song.! At!first,!I!asked!her!to!tell!me!the!meaning!of!the!lyrics!and!then!I!taught!her!how!to!pronounce!them! again.!She!could!understand!the!meaning!well.!She!looked!a!little!bit!happier!than!the!first!day.!We! sang!and!repeated!three!times!and!I!let!her!sing!the!song!herself!and!we!sang!together!three!times! again.!At!last,!she!could!sing!it!by!herself!without!hesitation.! !! On!the!last!day,!she!asked!me!to!sing!the!song!with!her!so!I!felt!really!glad.!We!sang!the! song!like!a!chorus.!Also!we!reviewed!again,!I!taught!her!the!meaning!and!the!pronunciation.!Finally,! I!asked!her!to!sing!herself.!She!forgot!the!melody!a!little!but!she!sang!the!song!by!herself.!I!was! really!surprised.! Through!the!research,!I!could!learn!how!reviewing!and!the!performance!are!important.!It!is! like!every!day!routine.!Although!she!is!not!good!at!English,!she!tried!to!memorize!the!meanings!and! how!to!sing!and!she!could!come!to!understand!singing!in!English.!She!told!me!that!teaching!the! pronunciation!would!be!good!for!English!learners,!so!the!teaching!was!a!good!chance!to!improve! her! English! speaking.! By! hearing! her! opinion,! I! found! the! teaching! was! also! the! value! of! my! studying.! ! ! !

I!decided!to!teach!the!song!"The!5!ways!to!happiness".!This!is!one!of!my!favorite!songs.!I! thought!these!lyrics!were!easy!to!remember!for!people!who!can't!speak!English!well.!In!addition,! this!song!makes!us!smile!and!happy.!That!is!why!I!chose!this!song.!! !! The!two!persons!I!taught!were!my!friend!and!my!mother.!My!friend’s!name!is!Nana.!We! have!been!best!friends!since!childhood.!She!is!a!dancer.!She!hasn’t!studied!English!since!she!was! a!HS!student.!It!means!she!isn’t!good!at!English.!So!I!wanted!to!teach!her!English.!On!the!other! hand,!my!mother!goes!to!the!English!conversations!classes.!So!she!can!speak!English!a!little.!The! reason!why!I!chose!them!is!they!always!encourage!me,!when!I!am!sad.!They!make!me!smile.!That! is!why!I!want!to!give!something!back!to!them.!In!addition,!I!thought!instructing!two!people!in!English! was!difficult,!but!I!wanted!to!try.! !! On!the!next!day!we!gathered!at!my!home.!First,!I!confirmed!whether!they!had!memorized! the!lyrics!or!not.!I!was!surprised,!because!both!of!them!remembered!them!well.!So!I!started!to! teach!the!gestures.!Nana!mastered!them!right!away,!because!she!is!good!at!dance.!However,!my! mother!looked!like!she!was!having!difficulties!memorizing!them.!So!I!tried!to!teach!the!gestures! carefully.!I!talked!about!the!importance!of!gestures.!For!example,!gestures!help!us!to!memorize! and!activate!our!brain.!They!listened!to!my!reasons!carefully.!After!that!we!sang!it!with!gestures!a! few!times.!Then!I!asked!“What!are!the!5!ways!to!happiness?”!Finally!they!could!sing!it!with! gestures.!While!they!sang!the!song!they!looked!happy!and!showed!me!smiles.! ! !! I!think!this!project!was!interesting!and!important,!because!I!could!watch!over!them! developing!their!abilities.!At!first!they!were!a!little!bit!nervous,!but!gradually!they!enjoyed!singing.!In! addition!I!could!learn!the!difficulty!of!teaching!and!have!a!sense!of!accomplishment.!This!song! made!not!only!students!happy!but!also!the!coach.!Through!this!project!I!learned!the!importance!of! gestures!once!again.! ! ! ! !

My!Family’s!English! Karen!Mitomi! !
I!chose!my!mother!and!my!little!brother!to!teach!a!song!to!because!my!mother!is!interested! in!English,!but!she!can’t!use!it!so!much,!and!my!brother!is!studying!English!the!same!as!me.! Besides!he!has!stayed!in!a!foreign!country,!so!I!wanted!like!to!compare!the!difference.!I!chose!to! teach!is!“How!Do!You!Have!a!Good!Life?”!because!of!the!length!and!the!meaning.!It!is!just!two! lines,!and!it!is!possible!to!learn!easily.!It!is!about!friends.!Friends!are!important!in!human!life,!and! we!have!many!chances!to!meet!new!friends!in!life.!These!are!my!reasons.! First,!I!started!with!my!mother!when!I!went!back!to!my!hometown!on!November!20.!I!asked! her!to!memorize!the!song,!and!I!sang!it!twice!for!her.!Then!I!asked!her!about!the!meaning.!She! caught!some!words,!such!as!“new!friends”!and!“silver”!but!she!couldn’t!understand!the!song’s! meaning,!so!I!taught!the!meaning!and!gave!her!the!lyrics!to!look!at!the!words.!She!sometimes!sang! it!when!we!were!together.!On!the!next!day,!I!asked!her!to!sing!it!without!me,!and!at!first!she!forgot! the!melody,!so!I!gave!the!first!sound!then!she!sang!it!by!herself.! Second,!on!December!6,!I!asked!my!little!brother!to!memorize!the!song.!I!did!almost!the! same!way!as!I!did!for!my!mother.!After!I!sang!it!twice,!I!asked!him!to!tell!me!the!meaning.!He!said! that!it!was!about!friends.!However!he!didn’t!know!what!silver!and!gold!meant!clearly,!so!I!taught! their!meanings!after!I!got!his!guess,!then!I!tried!a!little!different!work!as!fun!because!he!is!learning! English.!It!was!a!speed!dictation!which!we!practice!in!the!class.!I!sang!the!song!again,!and!he! wrote!the!lyrics!as!best!as!he!could.!As!a!result,!his!writing!was!correct,!and!he!could!sing!it!at!the! same!time.! To!sum!up,!my!mother!who!is!interested!in!English!took!about!a!day,!and!my!little!brother! who!is!learning!English!took!a!few!minutes!to!memorize!it.!Honestly,!his!result!could!be!expected.! However,!my!mother’s!result!was!faster!than!expected.!I!guess!the!reason!was!that!she!likes!to! watch!foreign!movies!with!English!and!subtitles!in!Japanese,!so!it!helped!her!to!listen!to!the!English! song!easily.!I!appreciate!both!of!them!for!working!with!me.!I!enjoyed!teaching!the!song,!and!it!may! be!because!of!their!English!knowledge.! ! Mom!Sings!“Young!Strong!&!Beautiful,”!Beautifully!! ! Haruna!Koizumi! !
I!decided!to!teach!the!song!“YSB”!to!my!mother,!because!I!sometimes!feel!that!I’m!young,! and!I!just!stand!at!a!starting!line!for!my!future!and!my!life!will!start!from!now.!On!the!other!hand,!I! became!able!to!do!lots!of!things!without!my!parents’!help.!It!is!natural!and!a!good!thing!for!us!that!I! matured.!But!it!means!that!my!parents!got!older!at!the!same!time.!My!image!of!my!mother!until!I! entered!KUIS!was!a!mother!who!always!worked.!I!rarely!saw!my!mother!spend!time!for!her!hobbies! or!something!she!wanted!to!do.!But!recently!she!started!to!study!to!get!a!license!of!SEIFU!(a!type! of!massage)!for!her!life!after!she!retires!from!her!job,!and!she!went!to!Disney,!she!participated!in!a! sweets!marathon,!and!she!goes!for!a!walk!with!my!father!sometimes!and!so!on.!I’m!happy!for!that! and!I!would!like!her!to!keep!her!youth,!health!and!happiness.!Therefore,!I!chose!YSB.! ! ! I! sometimes! feel! lonely! and! want! to! go! back! to! my! hometown! but! I! understand!I!can’t.!Therefore,!I!and!my!mother!call!and!inform!each!other!of!our!present!conditions! often.!I!think,!it!is!good!for!us.! ! During! this! semester,! I! learned! a! lot! of! SD! in! This!case!study!tries!to!see!how!effective!spaced'repetition!and!active'learning!are.!I!taught! six!songs!to!my!older!brother!(900+!in!TOEIC,!so!bit!better!English!vocabulary!than!me).!I!chose! him!for!the!case!study!because!I!imagined!many!classmates!probably!would!choose!beginners!or! people!at!their!level.!I!wanted!to!see!an!example!at!the!other!end!of!the!spectrum.! !! I! also! wanted! to! see! how! the! two! strategies! worked! in! teaching,! spaced! repetition! and! active!learning.!I!classified!the!songs!as!normal!songs!and!gesture!songs!(the!songs!which!require! singers!to!do!some!gestures)!and!taught!normal!ones!first!in!order!to!compare!them.!He!lives!in! Kyoto!prefecture!and!I!could!not!directly!teach!him!so!I!used!phone!calling!and!Skype.! For!the!first!4!days!out!of!9!days,!I!taught!him!“How!are!you?”,!“Why!do!you!smile?”!and!“Are!you! young?”! On! the! first! day,! I! found! out! that! he! didn’t! know! the! meaning! of! prodigious.! After! I! had! explained! the! meaning! and! the! rhythm! (Mary! Poppins),! he! seemed! to! memorize! the! song.! So! I! moved!on!to!teach!the!next!song,!but!from!this!time!I!started!to!ask!to!him,”How!are!you?”!every!5! minutes!while!calling.!It!took!more!than!15!minutes!to!teach!the!other!two!songs!and!meanwhile! there!were!at!least!4!times!that!he!responded!“I’m!super!happy!optimistic!joyful!and!prodigious.”! The!first!song[learning[encounter!(SLE)!was!done!in!approximately!25!minutes.! ! An!interesting!thing!that!happened!on!the!next!day!was!that!he!clearly!remembered!how!to! answer!“How!are!you?”!However,!I!doubted!that!it!was!only!because!of!spaced!repetition?!It’s!the! shortest! song! I! had! taught! so! there! was! a! possibility! that! the! song! is! the! easiest! to! remember! among! the! 3! songs.! Therefore,! on! that! day’s! phone! call,! I! first! made! him! remember! “Are! you! young?”!and!asked!it!every!5!minutes!just!same!as!I!had!done!on!the!first!day.!Surprisingly,!on!the! 3rd!day,!he!also!mastered!“Are!you!young?”!The!last!thing!I!needed!to!teach!him!was!the!“Why!do! you!smile”!melody.!And!the!last!day!of!spaced!repetition!examining,!he!got!every!song.!I’m!sure! spaced!repetition!helped!him!acquire!the!songs.! ! In! the! second! half! of! this! research,! I! taught! him! some! gesture[songs! for! inspecting! the! power!of!active!learning!by!using!Skype.!The!songs!are!“How!do!you!eat!well?”,!“What’s!the!5!ways! to!happiness?”!and!“What!is!asking”.!On!the!first!day,!it!took!about!30!minutes!in!total.!20!minutes! to!teach!songs!and!10!minuets!to!check!his!understandings.!After!the!30!minutes!I!asked!him!to! sing!the!previous!songs!and!then!hung!up!Skype.!What’s!happened!on!the!next!day!and!then!two! days!later,!he!got!nothing!new.!He!was!close!but!could!not!sing!them!perfectly,!so!I!reconfirmed!the! previous!songs!and!gave!gesture!songs!again.!7!days!had!past,!and!8th!day!on!the!skype,!he!made! me!surprised.!Although!I!expected!that!he!got!one!by!one,!He!got!all!gesture!songs.!Just!in!case!on! the!next!day,!I!saw!him!one!more!time,!nevertheless!he!still!could!sing!them!all.! In!this!research!with!my!older!brother,!I!found!out!both!spaced!repetition!and!active!learning! English!is!not!fun!for!me.!Second,!she!does!a!part[time!job!that!is!so!hard!and!far!from!her!home.! She!often!says!I!am!so!tired!and!want!to!quit!this!part[time!job.!So,!I!decided!to!teach!the!Five! Ways!to!Happiness!to!her.!This!song!includes!ways!to!be!happy!and!gestures,!so!this!is!easy!to! remember!for!everyone.! On!December!1,!I!taught!Hiro!a!song:!"How!do!you!succeed?"!This!song!was!a!parody!of! "Santa!Claus!Is!Coming!To!Town"k!the!melody!was!catchy!that!small!children!could!sing!it!easily! and!Christmas!was!coming.!Also,!the!lyrics!of!the!parody!included!"doidagain",!a!flapping!sound!of! In!this!class,!we!have!learned!many!songs!and!ideas.!These!songs!are!really!interesting,! exciting!and!sometime!relaxing.!This!case!study!is!a!result!of!my!research!about!song's!power! through!my!teaching.!I!choose!"What!is!asking?!and!"Who!do!you!love?"!and!I!taught!these!songs! to!my!younger!sister!who!is!a!high!school!student!and!my!mother.!We!live!together!so!I!directly! interviewed!them!and!taught!them!in!my!house.! Pedagogical Steps for Teachers In Classes: Using Speed Dictations One way (there are many options…) 1. If the song has gestures, teach the gestures first, especially with children. 2. Then give the lyrics (or part of it) as a SPEED DICTATION. In a speed dictation you say it too fast or softly for everyone to get everything thing and you allow them to collaborate and help each other each time after you say it. Explain to them that you want them to help each other and that you intend for it to be too hard for everybody to get the first time. So this is a chance to help each other. After they help each other after the first reading, you may still say it a few more times, or even sing it, instead of saying it. (Optional, ask them to write it on the board.) 3. Then teach them to sing it. The melody usually helps with their memory. 4. Then teach them the question that goes with it and tell them that throughout the class, every 5 minutes or so, you are going to ask them to ask each other “How are you?” (or whatever the question might be) and they have to answer “Superhappy….” This provokes “intent participation” (Rogoff et al. 2004), they know they are going to use it often and soon and so they focus more on it. Make sure you DO IT (ask the question) soon and frequently afterwards, otherwise they won’t get it in their brain. 5. Classroom Management Routine. Buying time usefully. Anytime the teacher needs a few seconds to organize the next activity, ask your students to ask each other a SD question. When I need a moment to get organized for something else, I ask them, “Please ask your partner ‘Why do you smile?’” It is also a wake up and a good way to start off the class and a reminder about important things. 6. You can also give mini-lectures or tell stories about the content of each speed dictation. You can make songs and borrow melodies for your favorite sayings.
