The modern lingerie consumer has access to an almost limitless variety of nightgowns. There's a style, cut, color, and fabric to suit everyone, regardless of age or body type. All that you need is to decide which styles you prefer! One of the most popular nightgown styles is the chemise. These gowns typically have spaghetti straps, and flow loosely around the body. Some, however, have princess seams and are excellent for showing off a curvy figure. Chemises come in many fabrics; the most popular are silk, satin, and cotton. Silk can't be beaten for luxury; however, it can be expensive and requires special care when cleaning it. Satin offers most of the softness of silk, and is very flattering in all levels of light; it look extremely alluring and romantic by candlelight, and can usually be machine-washed on the delicate cycle. Cotton, of course, is also soft and easy to care for, and is often interwoven with spandex to give it an accommodating stretch. Cotton nightgowns of all styles are great choices for both warm and cool weather, and are particularly great for children, since this fabric holds up well under repeated washing and can tolerate many stain removers. Another very popular nightgown style is the Victorian nightgown. As the name suggests, Victorian nightgowns are styled after fashions that were popular during Victorian times. They are usually made from white or cream cotton, and have billowy sleeves with a flowing body. These nightgowns may be long- or short-sleeved, and some simply have thick shoulder straps in lieu of sleeves. Long nightgowns of the long-sleeved variety are a particularly excellent choice for wear in cold climates; the sleeves often have an elastic wrist band that helps insulate the arms against drafts. Modest women frequently gravitate towards Victorian gowns because they usually have high necklines that can be opened or closed with a series of buttons or ribbons, depending on the amount of cleavage one wishes to display. The main drawback of a Victorian nightgown is that any stain will be readily apparent due to the light color of the fabric. Another popular nightgown style is the flannel nightgown. These garments are warm and fuzzy, and come in a variety of prints and solid colors. Plaids are a favorite. Inferior flannel may develop pills in areas where the fabric rubs against itself (usually the underarms). These pills may be easily removed with a fabric shaver, and usually do not form in quality flannels in the first place. Always check the labels of flannel garments to be sure that they have been treated with a fire retardant; flannel is a synthetic fabric that is naturally flammable, and may melt against the skin if it has not been treated to prevent this. Nightgowns of all shapes and styles are readily available in every department store and most clothing boutiques. They are also easily obtainable on the Internet; check the vendor's specific sizing charts before you buy, as every manufacturer cuts their gowns to slightly different specifications. Be sure to choose a vendor with a generous return policy if you cannot try your new nightgown on before you purchase it.
