Your Legacy to Lucy

Page 1

I couldn’t have imagined the impact that Lucy would have on my life when I arrived in 1999. Put simply, the academic, financial and pastoral support I received was exceptional. There was a place for me at Cambridge – all thanks to Lucy and it enabled me to realise my ambitions and broaden my horizons immeasurably. That is why I decided to leave an unrestricted legacy gift to the College in my will.

WHY LEAVE A LEGACY TO LUCY?

YOUR LEGACY’S IMPACT

YOUR LEGACY – THE FIRST STEPS

Legacy gifts keep on giving long into the future. By pledging a legacy gift you are enabling our College to plan for the future.

Once you have included a legacy gift in your will please let the College know using the Intentions Form provided.

After providing for your family and friends, it is possible to leave to Lucy either a capital amount or a share of the residue of your estate. Whether £250 or £250,000, from 1% of your estate to 100%, your legacy gift will make a significant difference.

Your gift will ensure that more students of outstanding academic potential from under-represented groups have the opportunity to study at Lucy, thrive academically at Cambridge, and progress successfully within their chosen fields.

We recommend that you seek professional legal advice when writing or amending your will.

A legacy gift to Lucy Cavendish is free of tax and may reduce the inheritance tax liabilities on your estate.

You will become a member of the Anna Bidder Society and receive invitations to celebratory events, including our annual lunch for legators and their guests – this is just one of the ways we will show our gratitude.

By making your gift unrestricted you will provide flexibility, enabling Lucy to tackle its future needs. We suggest using the following wording in your will: I give to the President and Fellows of Lucy Cavendish College in the University of Cambridge (Registered Charity Number 1137875) [the residue of my estate ] / [ ______ % of the residue of my estate] / [the sum of £ ____________ ] free of tax for the general purposes of the College. I declare that full receipt of the Bursar or other authorised officer of the College shall be a full and sufficient discharge to my Executors and Trustees.

If you would like to discuss your giving intentions in more detail, please contact the Development Office by email using development@lucy.cam.ac.uk or by calling +44 (0)1223 339241.

You will be supporting an extraordinary college as we embark on the next stage of our trailblazing history, helping Lucy remain the go-to college for students intending to have a positive impact on society. Whether our students go on to address inequalities of opportunity in our country, or to become leaders in solving the greatest challenges facing our world, your gift will have lasting and far-reaching benefits.

Since 1965, Lucy has been an important place of learning, research and empowerment, providing a vital step in the life journeys and career paths of so many. Lucy was as forward-looking then as it is now, providing people from non-traditional or under-represented backgrounds with access to a world-class Cambridge education and the support they need to make the very best of it. I have every faith that as the College grows, it will continue to enable its students to go on to make a positive impact in society.

LEGACY INTENTIONS FORM

YOUR LEGACY AND TAX

If you have remembered Lucy Cavendish College in your will, please let us know by completing and returning this form. This is not a binding document, but simply a statement of your intentions, assisting the College in its long-term planning. Most importantly, it gives us an opportunity to thank you and welcome you to the Anna Bidder Society.

A legacy gift to a charity such as Lucy Cavendish College is exempt from tax in the UK.

If you leave at least 10% of your taxable estate to charity, the Inheritance Tax rate for the rest of your estate decreases from 40% to 36%. In effect you may be able to leave more to charity while reducing the impact on your loved ones’ inheritance.

If you already plan to give at least 4% of your taxable estate to charity, increasing the gift to 10% means that both the charity and your taxable beneficiaries receive more.

For further information on Inheritance Tax please visit www.gov.uk/inheritance-tax

I have remembered Lucy Cavendish College in my will with

*

A residuary gift of ____________ % of my estate.

*

A fixed sum. Please note, it is possible to index-link fixed sums to protect the value of the legacy – please consult your solicitor or financial adviser for advice.

Having spent three of the most formative, enriching and enjoyable years of my life at Lucy Cavendish, it feels right that I should give something back. It is a pleasure to donate a legacy that, in some small way, will enable others in years to come to benefit as I did from all that the College can offer.
