I am announcing a one-off collaboration between Lucy Davis and Mar ni, which will be exclusively sold in Dover Street Mar ket. In the collection there will be an inspiration from Pop Ar t, and the q u i r k y f u n c o l o u r s i t r e p r e s e n t s . A s a d e s i g n e r, M a r n i i s a ve r y fun and colourful brand which makes it a ver y appropriate for the concept. The one-off collection will be perfect for women aged 25+ as they are youthful but sophisticated gar ments, ranging from dresses to two-piece outfits. The collection features a range of moder n and innovative designs, using different style of silhouettes and fabrics. The prints which create the collection have been inspired by older and moder n Pop Ar t with the biggest inspiration of this collection being D a m i e n H u r s t , A n d y W a r h o l a n d Ya y o i K u s a m a . T h e y r a n g e f r o m florals to bold stand out prints, which is a signature look for Marni. The style of the collection is inspired by the trend ‘funky player’ which consists of layering pieces of clothing to give it a funky edge for the more daring dressers, to tightly fitted dresses and two-piece outfits for the more sophisticated dressers. The idea behind this collaboration is to show the idea of bringing moder n design with an older twist through the prints.

Dover street market is a very individual and unique place to shop. They have stores only in London, Ginza, New York, Singapore, Beijing and LA. Dover street market was established in 2004, by Rei Kawakubo of Japense fashion label Comme Des Garons and her husband Adrian Joffee. it is located in Mayfair, London. Dover street market represents art as well as fashion, whic makes it a luxury place to shop. Their branding positioning I feel is around the higher end mark as they sell alot of luxury brands which are very expensive.

Marni is a Italian clothing brand founded in 1994 by Consuelo Castiglioni. At that time she was known for designing with fur, which wasn’t very popular at that time but she treated it as a normal fabric to make it more modern and wearable. The brand now is very colorful and has a lot of prints and pattern designs which makes the clothing very fun to wear. It is described as “quirky,” “feminine,” “off-beat,” and “funky.”The creative designer Francesco Risso likes to mix up the clothing that is put down the runway, by putting together combinations that wouldn’t necessarily go together.

I have chosen these three illustrators to take inspiration from when designing. When researching I come across Mathilde Cretier first. I realy liked how she uses patern in her digital designs. I liked Jason Brooks work becaue of the line work i think it makes it stand out more. Lastly i come across Bijou Karmen. I like her work because shes uses block colour which I really like. Even though these illustrators are very diffrent I’d like to incorporate each aspect of their work into my designs.

The proposal of this project was to design a collection in collaboration with my chosen brand. The aim was to create a collection that both represented the brand and my own design identity, which would be retailed in Dover Street Market. I started off my project by researching about Dover Street Market, even going there to visit to get primary research. This helped me with deciding what kind of brand I wanted to collaborate with and felt I suited more towards. From there I did some secondary research into the brand Marni, so I could get a more understanding of their brand and aesthetic and the kind of clothing they like to design. I looked at their stores as well as online website to get a more accurate representation of the brand. The main inspiration for my project was the brand Marni itself and Pop Art. I wanted to bring the idea of Pop Art into a modern twist by combining modern silhouettes with prints inspired by Pop Art. After researching into trends, I incorporated a modern trend into my designs to make it more appropriate for my brand. I communicated the trend and concept I chose for my project by taking inspirational imagery and putting them into my research pages to create concepts and a trend board. I referred back to these when designing my collection. My target market was from aged 25 and upwards, as Marni is a very sophisticated brand but also has a fun and quirky side to them. I feel like the clothing would appeal to this age group the most. I have presented my portfolio with a clear design identity. I tried to stick with the same colour theme that relates to my chosen brand, as well as the same style of writing that reflects the brands identity. Each page has a similar page design and layout which makes it easier to follow and relatable to my brand. I looked at different digital illustrators such as Matilde Creiter and Bijou Karman which influenced my designs when creating my 2D collection. I feel as I have learnt a lot by doing this project as well as developing my digital skills and techniques which will help me in the future. I was able to complete different tasks in the way I felt was more effective and efficient to my project. A few techniques I learnt to do were clipping masks and displacement maps. Clipping masks allowed me to put my own print onto the designs I created, making them as realistic as possible. It also meant I could create a range plan, putting my prints into different flats drawings. Learning how to create displacement maps meant I was able to create realistic visualisations and marketing for my project, whether it be on a magazine cover or a bus stop poster. I was also able to build on existing skills and techniques I already had, by practising them. This allowed me to expand my knowledge on 2D design and make them stronger. After using InDesign, Illustrator and photoshop to help me with the project, I feel I am so much more competent with these programs and now am able to use them to the best of my ability. I felt during this project I used my time efficiently and kept up with the time plan. Although we had some disruption, I was able to quickly get back on track with the work and complete everything on time. What I feel worked well in my portfolio is my research pages and the way I kept a running theme throughout. I was also pleased with how my illustrations come out in the end and my marketing and visualisations. I was happy with my 2 main prints I used in my designs as they represent both the brand and my own identity. I feel as if I have improved with my technical flats but feel like there is room for more improvement. I also feel for next time I could try have a go at creating my own digital croque head and shoes rather than using a brush stamp. Although I was happy with the outcome, it could be something to focus on. I feel like this would push me to further develop my 2D illustration skills more and help me find a style that I like to use in future projects. Next time I feel like I would take more time on my technical flats perfecting them even more. I also think next time I would try and explore different print ideas.
