As I am quite sure that the way I DID my life was the only possible way for me I would certainly not recommend a different way for myself. Not that I think my way would suit most people and I certainly wouldn’t recommend it to other people. I definitely needed a life where I tried out lots of different things (and found that they didn’t work !). But of course this mucks up completely any ideas of a “career” you may have as you have to start very early for that.

Be a Physiotherapist – it has really developed as a profession, Scientific, can set up ones own business. Or be a David Attenborough type figure producing nature programmes.
Be confident in your skills and stand up for yourself. Take on challenges, even if you fail you’ll take something away from the experience. Never be subservient but don’t be too cocky. Learn to be diplomatic because it will help you get your own way in the end. If you make a mistake own up, you’ll feel better about yourself in the long run.

Stephanie Architect Become an apprentice to someone in a design field so you can get experience. Avoid getting stuck in something that appears to be a dead end and keep your options open.
Above all, try to enjoy your working life. You spend more time at work than anywhere else so it’s vital to be happy in what you’re doing. I knew what I wanted to do from the age of ten, so I can’t imagine what it would be like to have to choose a career course at 16 or 18 years old. But I guess if you make the wrong choice don’t just plough on hoping it’ll get better, get out and try something else. And one last thing, never stop learning and taking on new skills, it all helps to make you a more rounded person.

This was bad. Very bad. I had just successively followed an episode of Cash in the Attic, with Loose Women. I was beginning to visibly shake as a result of the morning’s chain-tea drinking. I had used to wear proper clothes, now all I wore was some hideous next trackies and wellingtons. Things had begun to slide. Since graduating with a good degree from a respected university, it had been months of job applications, rejections and village solitude, punctuated with thrilling trips to London to see friends who guided me around like an over excited granny. I’d moved home to save money, but was lonely, and needed a break. Design Magazine :: Page 12
We are all familiar with the concept of paying large amounts of money to travel pre and postuniversity, but workaway.info largely eliminates this. It costs €22 (€29 for a couple/two friends) to join the site for two years, giving you a mail box and a personal profile, making it quick and easy to apply to hosts, and giving you access to the profiles of host families and farms worldwide, from volunteering at a castle in the Scottish Highlands, to farming in Peru. The main costs incurred are flights to and from your chosen workaway, and your travel within the country. Once established with your hosts, who range from large French families, needing
hands-on help with the apple harvest, to delivering medical supplies to isolated communities, by ship (!) in Asia; you are given a place to sleep, and food for your stay. In summertime, hosts with lacking space will set out tents (camping in an orchard – not so shabby!), but most will have spare beds within the house. Most workaway hosts expect around 5 hours work per day; although with children around this can run over, with 2 days off a week. You’ll get fitter and certainly feel ready for that beer at sundown! You live, eat and work with your hosts, building strong bonds, and staying in homes, not hotels. I found Workaway invaluable, not only for lifting me out of the job-gloom for a month and replacing me invigorated, but simply for the connections I made, not only with the hosts, but with the country I chose (Italy), and for a relatively small amount of savings. I learnt Italian cooking, childcare (i.e. being mistaken for an Italian teenage mother, cringe), minor forestry, (getting chased by a wild boar), driving a pick-up truck on unpaved mountain roads and post and rail fence construction. I watched how a family worked, and for a while became part of it, whist based in one of the country’s most beautiful regions. Take a look. A relentless and unforgiving perception of the world by the media and wider social perceptions is that getting a job is an impossibility for young people. This is particularly fierce when regarding recent graduates leaving university. Yet despite this assertion unemployment has been seen to fall in the past month. A serious concern that presents itself is not whether jobs are available for graduates, rather do graduates know what careers there are out there for them.

In addition to this it is important to be proactive in an efficient way. You are not required to spend day and night in a frenzy of activity and anxiety. Use recruitment agencies. Discuss what you want with them. They want to get you a job and the more it fits your aspirations the more likely they are to be successful. Don’t be intimidated by them. They are not doing you a favour. The more agencies you have working efficiently for you the more effective the search for your ideal job will be. The job that you chose to do potentially could shape your career for your whole working life however it should not be seen as scary and no aspiration is ridiculous.
For those who’s degree did not enrich them with a yellow brick road to employment who lack a passion for Law or Medicine and for whom the jargon inflated titles of entry level jobs are bewildering the outlook seems bleak. However this is a time of the ultimate freedom where a huge range of choice and possibilities are available to you. Resist the urge to take the first thing available to you and seriously consider what it means to take on a role for your future. Identify your key skills and what you enjoy doing. You may not think there is a job where dressing up and drinking champagne is a valid asset but Text by Chris Williams careers in events management can often provide just that. Once you know what you want to do, don’t waste time applying to jobs that do not fit your criteria. This is all well and good for a job in the temporary short term but for a career it will only furnish you with malcontent frustration. Finally don’t lose hope.
