hallidays point Although part of the Manning Valley and not the Great Lakes, being such a short drive north of Forster it is hard not to include the area in this guide as it is just such a magical part of the world. The collective area known as Hallidays Point actually encompasses the villages of Black Head, Red Head, Diamond Beach, Tallwoods and Hallidays Point itself.
Black Head Beach
Black Head Beach is a multi-award winning beach under the Keep Australia Beautiful program for its cleanliness and its friendly local resident population. It is perfect for families as it’s patrolled in summer and has BBQs, a playground and picnic facilities. Both Red Head and Black Head encompass littoral rainforest and are great examples of how

hallidays point the Eastern Australian coastline would have looked prior to European settlement. There is an excellent rainforest walking track here connecting both the headlands extending from Black Head and Pebbly Beach to Red Head and Shelly Beach. Make sure you visit the The Black Head Bazaar located by the park beside the sea. It is held on the 1st Sunday of the month from 8am - 1pm from September till May. There are 130+ stalls offering something for everyone including items that are homemade, handmade, homegrown, collectible, usable or just plain fascinating. Whitewashed Gallery features unique textured artwork by local artist Kaz, and has a range of quirky collectables. There are handmade treasures to delight, excite and explore. Works are created on site from locally gathered materials such as driftwood mobiles, paintings, beachy
restored furniture, wooden crafts, shell designs, wooden fish art, seahorses, and much more. Black Head Bowling Club is an awardwinning modern sports, community and family entertainment centre situated on the headland at Hallidays Point. The club provides full club facilities including a TAB sports user terminal, Keno, Sky Channel, Fox Sports and ATM facility. With great ocean views, where whales frolic, the club is surrounded by beaches and headland rainforest, with direct access to walking tracks through the littoral rainforest to secluded beaches. Black Head Bowlo Bistro provides a great range of food catering for all tastes with a full menu, lunch and dinner every day, with mid-week and Sunday specials plus Blackboard specials. Check out their web site blackheadbowlingclub.com.au for latest Bistro, entertainment and holiday social bowls info. Courtesy Bus service operates everyday. For bookings phone 6559 2923.

Only a 5 minute drive from Black Head, Diamond Beach is definitely worth a visit or to stay a while. The area started out as a beachside fishing village with just a handful of holiday cottages for keen fishermen. Now the area is popular with residents and holidaymakers alike for its beautiful beach and peaceful atmosphere. Grab a snack or find that special gift at the local Diamond Beach shops. Or continue on to the Ramada Resort where you can relax on their pond-side deck and enjoy a delicious meal or just a coffee or a glass of wine.
Ramada Resort Diamond Beach is set just metres behind Diamond Beach, a six kilometre stretch of white sand that offers superb walking, fishing, surfing and even dolphin watching. Within the resort itself, there is the new Kindred restaurant, two pools, a tennis court, day spa, and a kid’s club. Offering beachfront seclusion just 25 minutes drive from the townships of Taree and Foster, it’s the perfect getaway for both couples and families. Accommodation options include one and two bedroom villas, two bedroom cottages, three bedroom beach houses and one and two bed-

place’ in the Worimi Aboriginal language). In 1959, the two towns were linked for the first time with a bridge which replaced a punt service that had operated in one form or another for the previous 69 years.
Forster and Tuncurry sit opposite each other at the entrance to Wallis Lake - a 25km long waterway famous for its oysters, fishing and water sports. Once considered a single town, Forster was originally known as Minimbah (meaning ‘home of teacher’) and was renamed circa 1870 after William Forster, the Secretary of Lands at the time. Likewise, Tuncurry was known as North Shore and later North-Forster up until 1875 when it was renamed Tuncurrie, which then became Tuncurry (meaning ‘plenty fish’ or ‘good fishing
Beach Bums - You certainly don’t get too many places like this in the world. The Beach Bums Café on Forster Main Beach is the perfect spot to start the day. In a picturesque setting with perfect views over the beach, you can enjoy breakfast or lunch or just a fantastic coffee. The kids can play in the sand while you sit back and read the paper and soak in the sun. Keep an eye out for dolphins and whales (in season) - they are only metres away. At Beach Bums shoes are optional (see ad page 10).

The Sicilian revives the 1940s inspired Italian dining experience. Located underneath The Dorsal Boutique Hotel and right opposite Forster Main Beach, also another branch at 139 Victoria St. Taree. The Sicilian won’t settle for second best. They are very demanding when it comes to food and believe that good food is good business. Open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner, they are open all day for coffee, cakes or a glass of vino. Pay them a visit and they’ll make you an offer you can’t refuse. Slipway on Wallis is located on the beautiful Wallis Lake where you can watch the dolphins play while you are enjoying their fresh local seafood or an ice cold beverage. They are open 7 days a weeks from 10.00am for coffee, cake, lunch and dinner. Breakfast is available Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 7.30am (every day during holiday periods). Visit their facebook page for up and coming events. Hamiltons Oysters is an oyster bar with good food and a stunning outlook situated right
on the water at Wallis Lake. They offer locally grown Sydney Rock oysters and good quality wholesome food with a varied menu all day, all year round. Here you can feel part of the changing landscape as the water laps under the deck while you observe the daily actions of the fishermen, oyster farmers and local wildlife. So if you are after a relaxed and casual venue on the way home from the beach, their kitchen is always open and their beer is always cold! Wallamba Riverside Café is situated on the picturesque Wallamba River just minutes north of Tuncurry (attached to the Wallamba River Holiday Park) and offers a range of takeaway food, coffee, drinks and ice creams every day. Their homemade pizzas are available Friday and Saturday nights from 5.30pm (and other nights during school holidays). Also available from the café is ice for your esky, a newspaper to read, some bait to fish and the fishing licence you need. Relax on the veranda with some good food and a great view…it is well worth the drive! Life doesn’t get much better! Open 7 days a week.

pacific palms Pacific Palms is bounded by the area north of Tiona, south to Tarbuck Bay and inland to Whoota and was originally occupied by the Worimi people. The area includes Sandbar, Blueys Beach, Boomerang Beach, Green Point, Coomba Park and Smiths Lake plus Booti Booti and Wallingat National Parks. An ex-convict William Bramble was the area’s first European settler in 1854, followed by one of his grandsons settling north of The Sandbar in the 1880’s. The Godwin family settled at Cape Hawk in 1863 after they had initially settled in Forster. Willie Newman and his family arrived in 1866 and later took up the majority of the land east of the Lakes Way between Smiths Lake and Elizabeth Beach in the early 1900’s. The first to settle at Booti Booti at the site now known as The Ruins was John Frederick Gogerly and his family. John Frederick was a sea captain who once boasted there wasn’t enough water in the Pacific Ocean to drown him. Ironically he
20 20 DM_forster-A5_10.15.indd 20
was found drowned in Wallis Lake in August 1905 as he was sailing home from Forster with supplies. It was assumed he had suffered a heart attack. Pacific Palms has become a vibrant little community in its own right with a mix of accommodation options from budget to luxury. There are numerous small cafes and a few galleries to spend an hour or two fossicking for that something special to remember your holiday by. The area includes around 80 kilometres of coastline and offers numerous holiday activities ranging from coastal walks, bushwalking and birdwatching through to water activities such as snorkelling, fishing, kayaking and of course surfing and swimming. On the last Sunday of the month, and more frequently in the holidays, the Community Centre on the Lakes Way hosts the Palm Markets. The Markets showcase quality handmade, home grown and home baked products from Elizabeth Beach, Shane Chalker Photography

around the Great Lakes region and beyond. You can sample fabulous International foods including organic vegetarian curries, Turkish gozleme, Asian noodles and German pastries. Everything from eco and fair trade products, jewellery, art, craft, clothes, plants, fruit, veg and beautiful body products are all on display. Meanwhile the kids will love the jumping castle and pony rides. Green Point village, located half way between Forster and Pacific Palms, is a hidden gem. Surrounded by Wallis Lake and National Park it is one of the few places on the eastern seaboard where you can watch the sun set over a large expanse of water. It is here that you will find Country Palings Café & Gallery. Relax on the spacious sun deck and enjoy the wonderful scenery and refreshment from their renowned selection of coffees, cakes and drinks. This unique gift shop specialises in hand made silk flower arrangements, jewellery, scarves, candles and handbags - you are sure to find the perfect gift. Coomba Park is a little coastal village located 35 minutes drive south of Forster. Situated on the edge of the Wallingat National Park and nestled on the western shore of Wallis Lake, directly across from Green Point. With the road finishing at Coomba Park there is not a lot of passing traffic and some residents claim you can hear the silence! The surrounding National Parks provide plenty of good bushwalking and scenic drives. The lakeside walk has great views of Wallis Lake, with benches available to sit and keep an eye out for dolphins. Good fishing is available in the lake itself. Smiths Lake Is located between the Wallis and Myall Lakes. Although smaller than these two, Smiths Lake is just as beautiful with calm waters separated from the ocean by a large sandbar formation. The entrance gets opened by the council if the lake’s water gets too high or too low. An enormous amount of water activities can be had on Smiths Lake from fishing to boating to canoeing, or just sitting back with a picnic enjoying the sun’s rays.

seal rocks Seal Rocks is a small hamlet beach town south of Pacific Palms and Forster and 310 km north of Sydney. Its fame largely rests on the unique Sugar Loaf Point Lighthouse and the sense of isolation it enjoys. Seal Rocks is one of the few remaining coastal villages that have avoided major development due to a strong local feeling it should remain unspoilt. Located in Myall Lakes National Park, it hosts areas of some of the last remaining coastal rainforests. This idyllic area offers a moderate climate of warm summer seas and cool summer breezes, sunny winter days and cosy winter nights. The site offers expansive vistas of coastline from Crowdy Head in the north to Port Stephens in the south. Its secluded location offers pristine beaches, azure seas, protected marine wildlife environments, wondrous rockpools, a mythological blowhole, breathtaking rainforest and coastal walks.

Surrounding Sugarloaf Point are the popular tourist areas of Pacific Palms and Myall Lakes, which offer nearby facilities to this otherwise piece of isolated paradise. This area boasts some of the best pristine beaches and quality surf spots in NSW. It is also known as a recognised dive spot with a large population of grey nurse sharks and some 20 wrecks, which provide a world class diving platform. Fishermen have the advantage of enjoying an array of options with excellent beach, rock, deep sea and game fishing all possible. The area is abundant and rich with historical and cultural diversity. Five beaches are accessible within 10 minutes and in a short drive you have the Myall, Smiths and Wallis Lakes to explore. Myall Lake is a World Heritage listed lake and a must to see.

waterways Crystal clear and ‘aqua’ in colour, ours is a truly unique waterway system, made up of three lakes the Wallis Lake, Smiths Lake and further south, Myall Lakes. Wallis Lake is an excellent swimming spot and great for all water sports. There are wonderful islands in the lake, and several are nature reserves with picnic facilities. Dolphins can quite regularly be spotted cavorting underneath the bridge linking Forster and Tuncurry, as well as numerous other locations both in the lakes themselves or surfing the waves along the shoreline. The Myall Lakes cover 10,000 ha and are made up of four main sections: Bombah Broadwater, Two Mile Lake, Boolambayte Lake and Myall Lake. These beautiful waters are a popular spot for houseboats, families and fishing.

The coastline from Hallidays Point’s Diamond Beach south down to Treachery Bay offers a choice of over 20 beaches. Some of the main ones, starting from the north are Black Head Beach, which is patrolled in season and features a great ocean pool, shaded areas for BBQs and picnics and well established Norfolk pines. Further south around the Forster/ Tuncurry area there is Nine Mile Beach (Tuncurry Beach) - a good surfing beach with a rock pool, grassed areas, kiosk, showers, toilets, playground and BBQs. Forster Beach - Patrolled in season, it has showers, toilets, a kiosk, picnic facilities and ocean pool.

Seven Mile Beach stretches south from Cape Hawke down to Booti Hill and The Ruins. At the southern end of Seven Mile you’ll find Bulls Paddock, great for surfing. In Pacific Palms you will find Elizabeth Beach which is a beautiful patrolled beach (in season) with picnic area and toilets. There is also Boomerang Beach, Pacific Palms’ best surfing beach and also a great swimming spot. Blueys Beach is another excellent surfing beach, particularly in a north-easterly.

Finally, there is Treachery Beach where normally a wave can be had even when everywhere else is flat. Off-road enthusiasts are catered for with 4WDs permitted on Diamond Beach and Nine Mile Beach. Note that 4WD permits are required to drive on council controlled beaches. These can be obtained from council offices or visitor information centres.

One of the best ways to appreciate the beaches and coastline is to explore some of the coastal walking tracks. One of the most popular of these is the Pebbly Beach Bicentennial Walk. It starts at North Street, near the ocean pool of Forster Beach and finishes at Burgess Beach. Another great walk is the Rainforest Walk at Hallidays Point which links the headlands of Black Head and Red Head. Over the 2016 Christmas holiday period, Forster Surf Life Saving Club is conducting a Surf Awareness School for children aged 5 to 15 years. The school is running on January 6th, 13th and *21st from 9am until 12 noon at Forster Beach. seafood & fishing
Wallis Lake Flathead, Shane Chalker Photography
With a name like the Great Lakes, it is no surprise that our area offers some of the most magnificent waterways and fresh seafood.
Winning clean waters, “Wallis Lake” oysters are widely regarded as being one of the world’s premium seafood delicacies.
Wallis Lake is famous for its oysters - an absolute must while you are here.
See also Hamiltons Oysters on page 9.
Pacific Palms Seafood have done all the hard work and caught the best seafood available in the area. Call in and see their wonderful display of fresh local and regional seafood plus an extensive range of frozen seafood. Their competitive prices and quality range of seafood can be purchased 7 days a week.
Fishing is extremely popular in the Great Lakes region. Fishing spots abound along the rivers, lakes, beaches and breakwalls. The area is particularly good for flathead, leather jacket, bream, and whiting. If you have your own boat there are plenty of boat ramps available, or you can hire a boat from one of the many hire spots along Little Street in Forster.
Graham Barclay Oysters is a third generation business and the largest producer of Sydney Rock Oysters in Australia. Fresh oysters (opened, unopened and bottled) are available 7 days a week, including public holidays. Grown in Award
So take some time out, grab your rod and reel or handline, some bait and enjoy some fishing in this wonderful region. Don’t forget to pay for your Recreational Fishing Licence from any bait and tackle shop, or by calling 1300 369 365.

walks & national parks Booti Booti National Park is located on The Lakes Way and is spread over 1,567 hectares just 10 kms south of Forster. With ocean on one side and the Wallis Lake on the other, there is a variety of different ways to explore. This area offers excellent water activities including fishing, sailing, as well as both Elizabeth and Seven Mile Beach. You can camp at The Ruins (camping fees apply), where facilities include hot showers and gas BBQs. At the summit of Cape Hawke there is a viewing tower giving you a panoramic view of the Forster lakes and beaches plus Seal Rocks, Crowdy Head and Wallis Lake. There is a walk (only for the fit) with entry at The Ruins camping ground at the south end of Seven Mile Beach. A short walk towards the headland takes you to Flat Rock, continue around the headland to Elizabeth Beach, but be warned that the grade is steep. An alternative for the less energetic is to cross The Lakes Way to the edge of Wallis Lake and follow the shoreline around to the Green Cathedral. The ocean and lakeside walks combined cover 7km. From the Elizabeth Beach end, the access is via Lethbridge Rd up the headland to a good viewing point of the beach and coastline.
Wallinghat National Park contains eucalypt forests supporting a number of threatened plant and animal species. Activities include canoeing, bushwalking, bird watching, and scenic drives, with camping grounds, public toilets, walking tracks and picnic tables. The park is located 30 km southeast of Forster along the Lakes Way and Sugar Creek Road. Note that all roads within the park are unsealed. There are a number of good walks by following fire trails, which lead you down to the river for some great fishing. Whoota Lookout is one of the best natural viewing platforms on the mid-north coast, providing magnificent views of 100 kilometres of coastline from Port Macquarie to Port Stephens. Myall Lakes National Park is one of New South Wales’ largest coastal lake systems and one of the most visited parks in NSW. It incorporates 31,562 ha of headlands, forest, swampland and a staggering 10,000 ha of coastal lagoons. These lagoons - Myall Lake, Boolambyte Lake, Two Mile Lake and The Broadwater - are linked by narrow straits which form a continuous waterway joined to Port Stephens by the lower Myall River. Between the lakes and the sea, are high sand dunes and 40 km of almost unbroken beaches. There is a ferry at Bombah Point which leaves every half hour from 8.00a.m - 6.00p.m. The car ferry transports you across to Myall Shores, from this point a walking track leads to the mouth of the Upper Myall River. A very poor quality unsealed road leads to the township of Bulahdelah just 15 kms away. If you can tear yourself away from the region’s beautiful beaches and waterways, you can picnic in some of the most scenic spots the region has to offer. Most with great playgrounds for the kids, or nestled on the banks of the river there is a grassy patch for everyone. Tuncurry also has a fantastic Skate Park located on Point Road, Tuncurry, opposite Wallis Lake in John Fazio Park. Map ref: E8. So grab a chicken and your picnic blanket and relax, you’re on holidays!
