SPRING BREEZE

What do we feel when we think about Spring? It is always the warm feeling we have of new beginnings, and fresh and innovative starts. There’s something about this season that grows beautiful emotions inside us. Is it the flowers maybe? Is it the approaching warm weather? That could be the case! But I think that it’s us; us the people that bloom. We all bloom into unique flowers. These photos represent how we are reborn, year after year when Spring arrives. The flowers may be dry but they still feel real and beautiful. It’s 2017, the make-up era is still on as it will always be and this season the simple make up is vibrant. Pale colors, peachy pigments & natural lips are on top. If we want to breathe like flowers, first we must look like them! If you’d ask me; a positive attitude, power & enthusiasm are the top three qualities we should be aiming for this Spring!

THE LOOKS SEEM VERY STAGED AND CURATED AT FIRST BUT WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE WHOLE COMPOSITION, THE INCLUSION OF THE UNDER-STYLED, SLIGHTLY OFF FULL BODY SHOTS EXPLORES THE NAIVE LIMITS OF A COMMON EXPRESSION OF WHAT MAKEUP AND MODELING IS, OF WHAT THE NORMS OF ACCEPTANCE ARE. IT BREAKS THE NORMS. SINCE THE FAKENESS OF THE SHOOT WAS DELIBERATE IT UNCOVERS A SORT OF NATURAL SILLINESS AND NAIVETÉ OF UNRAVELLING PERSONALITIES.

an interview with

AGATA KOZAK You wouldn’t associate a fear of flying with a person who boards a plane about as often as women get their nails done, but it’s just one quirk of many for Agata Kozak, fashion designer and founder of COSSAC. The East London-based designer who hails from Poland and has studied at not one but two reputable design schools, is also obsessed with sustainability, which is at odds with a career in the world’s second most polluting industry. In an effort to understand Agata and resolve this seeming contradiction, I decided an interview was in order with this selfprofessed eco fashion designer.

JENNIFER What inspired you to become a fashion designer? AGATA When I was young, my mother was friends with a famous Polish fashion designer. I had an insight into the fashion world, catwalks, events - and I loved it. I was also always a creative person. I enjoyed making things and was fascinated by the complex process of creating a garment. JENNIFER Which design schools did you go to? AGATA I went to ESDi in Barcelona and to Mimar Sinan in Istanbul. Both amazing universities, both very different. I like the fact that my fashion education was shaped by such diverse cultures which also suited my cosmopolitan nature very well. What I am now and what COSSAC stands for is a fruit of these eclectic influences. JENNIFER What’s your favourite part about your job? AGATA I love the first part of the design process the most - the research, discovering trends, tendencies. I enjoy analysing current fashion and social cultures as well as studying history of art and fashion. Discovering and feeling new fabrics. The final product depends on how good your preparations and studies were. And I like to be as much of a perfectionist as I can be. JENNIFER Where do you find the creative inspiration for each collection? AGATA I love fashion history books. In the end fashion always makes circles and repeats itself to some extend. I also use trend forecasting websites, Instagram, Pinterest as well as creative magazines such as Cereal, Kinfolk or Purple. I also observe a lot; particularly the people around me. As Diana Vreeland once said the ‘eye has to travel.’ I let my eyes travel a lot. JENNIFER You worked as a designer for other brands prior to launching your own label. How did that experience impact the way you run your own brand? AGATA I wanted to get as much diverse experience as possible. I worked in both high end and high street in Turkey, Spain and the UK. I did many freelance projects too. I had to go through all of this to know what I truly wanted and felt comfortable doing. COSSAC is a fruit of all these experiences and our current home, London, was also carefully chosen as a creative and fashion hub with so many opportunities and logistic advantages it offers. JENNIFER Is that why COSSAC focusses on sustainability, because you saw a lot of waste when you were working for other brands? AGATA The longer I lived in London the more I became conscious of the way I lived. I started to buy organic, support small local businesses and became increasingly interested in applying a sustainable approach to other areas on my life. My

interest in sustainable clothing was a natural consequence. Of course in the past I, like many other people, got seduced by easily accessible fast fashion but as I continued working in the industry, I saw many disturbing things and as I started to educate myself about the subject by reading books and watching documentaries I knew that I would like to contribute to the change in the fashion industry. I always wanted to have my own brand but after my experiences with fashion, I decided that my brand has to ‘do good’. I think the breaking points were the collapse of Rana Plaza in 2013 and reading Lucy Siegle’s ‘To die for: Is fashion wearing out the world?’ I would like people to question how and where things are made and understand that a sustainably produced garment does not cost £10. They have to understand the labour that goes into it and care about people who made the piece of clothing they are wearing. When a garment has a story behind it, we treat it with more care and love. I would like people to start to cherish fashion again, like they used to before fast fashion. JENNIFER What makes COSSAC ‘sustainable’? AGATA I try to make every stage of product development as effective and sustainable as possible. I call it smart design; experimenting with limited production runs, zero waste design and transeasonality. I think that eco fashion brands often forget that at the end of the day they sell fashion and the product has to be aesthetically appealing. We create product that is attractive to the mainstream fashion customer as well as the niche green-buyer. On top of that, what differentiates us, is the fact that we thrive on collaboration and promoting other artists, especially photographers; I believe that networking and helping each other is the way forward. JENNIFER How do you balance creativity with running the business? AGATA It is hard. As a creative I do struggle with the business part of running a brand. At the end of the day I simply know how to draw pretty clothes. I grow together with COSSAC but I am also lucky to have amazing people helping me out with business mentoring, marketing help and great agents who handle sales. Running a fashion brand for me is like a constant learning curve. I do business courses, seminars, trade shows; I read books and constantly have a business podcast on the go. It’s all scary but very exciting and rewarding! JENNIFER What motto do you live by? AGATA There are so many! One of my favourites is “Life starts outside of your comfort zone” which I repeat to myself every time I have to board a plane. I’m petrified of flying but I know that at the end of each flight, great adventure awaits. www.cossac.co.uk

What does ‘Anna Dezet’ stands for? ‘Anna Dezet’ stands for high quality and high end fashion designs and accessories. At the moment the label offers a huge variety of unique, colourful and exclusive bow ties which can be purchased online at my webpage www.annadezet.com. What is the most interesting part about your products? The most interesting part about my bow ties is probably the choice of fabric. My standard line contains: Silk, leather and cork bow ties. There also will be four seasonal collections per year. The current collection contains hand drawn cotton bow ties. Every piece of the seasonal collection has a limited availability and will be produced only once. All bow ties will be produced 100% by hand in my studio nearby Dusseldorf/ Germany. On the first glimpse, cork seems like an unusual fabric for bow ties. Why did you decide to choose this texture? On top of all the beautiful fabrics I’m working with, I wanted to offer a vegan alternative. The cork bow ties are 100% vegan and are therefore perfect for customers who would rather wear an alternative bow tie or are looking for vegan products in general. Why and when did you decide to found your label and why did you focus just on bow ties? After graduating in Dusseldorf with a B.A. in Fashion Design, I worked in fashion for one year. I figured that there haven’t been a lot of extraordinary or exclusive bow ties on the market. So I experimented with some shapes and different pattern cutting methods to find the right size for the perfect bow tie.

Where do you find your inspiration? And what was the inspiration for the spring bow tie collection? I find my inspiration literally everywhere. If you’re a creative mind, you will see the world with different eyes and get new ideas wherever you walk. But most of the times, I find my inspiration in friends, family, nature or everything I’m surrounded by. I went to a beautiful exhibition at ‘Von Der Heydt-Museum’ in Wuppertal which was about Degas. I really got inspired by the artists drawing techniques and the mix of colours. I transferred the rough lines into my designs. I feel like the mix of colour and texture turned out really nice. What s your favorit bow tie and why? I especially love the laser cut bow ties. They are my personal favourite. During a project at university, I experimented with different laser cut designs. I drew a variety of patterns which have been cut out afterwards. It gives me the opportunity to work with different shapes, designs and details which is an amazing addition to my elegant designs. What are the future plans for your label? For now, I’ll focus on producing fabulous bow ties. The next two years I want to experiment with different textures and fabrics as well as colours and prints. I want to be as creative as possible and challenge myself in every kind of way. I could maybe see myself producing womens- or menswear at some point in the future. But I feel like the bow ties are a project, where I want to put all my heart in at the moment. photographer EVANGELOS RODOULIS

hristina Kilmister, founder and fashion designer of Lilika Designs, is all about a woman being able to pop something on, no matter what the mood or dress code, and just feel beautiful. She has a Greek background (Lilika is her mother’s name in Greek). Being one of four sisters, she always found herself designing and styling. Her mother grew up sewing garments from a young age, and her mother also had a great love for all things fashion. So it is no surprise Christina has emulated that same passion through the generations. “I started making clothes very young, as my sisters were older I would spend lots of time with my mother while she shopped the fabrics stores for her daughter’s next creations. I would play for hours surrounded by fabrics and buttons dressing my dolls. So naturally as soon as my foot could reach the pedal I owned my first sewing machine! The boutique designer brand delivers exclusive creations that are luxurious, playful, have a vibrant color palette and are full of personality. The garments are proudly crafted in New Zealand. Lilika Designs is quickly building an International presence in the fashion industry, with recent showings in NYC and at FWLA. “When you are doing what you love, it is not work. I just get up each day now and play!” says Christina www.lilikadesigns.com model JAYDE KELLY hair and makeup LUISA PETCH / GLAM SQUAD
