The concept revolves around man made reflective surfaces like glass and mirrors which all initially came from nature. The contrast between what once was and what man has created from it. Shooting in nature but still retaining aspects in terms of colours and textures which added to the contrast between the two. The mood of the shoot rotated around two girls who were both potential lovers who were exploring nature as well as getting to know each other. With the hair we decided to keep it natural by enhancing what they already have naturally. The makeup remained a classic base with exaggerated flushed cheeks. Shooting in a park on the outskirts of London allowed us the luxury of picking from various locations within a small area.

The creative team from Perth, Western Australia, created a minimal and clean fashion shoot, that embraced colourblocking in muted tones. Shot in an old home destined for demolition, the team embraced the organic quirks of the home and its dreamy colour palette. Stylist Clare Ryan selected a combination of structured and textural clothing that would complement the architecture and colours of the home. A pink Stella McCartney suit from ELLE boutique was the hero of the shoot. The double breasted, classic style, is a timeless design. Accessories with a hint of gold and pearl texture were chosen to sit against Shudia’s beautiful skin. Makeup artist Brittany Mason kept the makeup tonal with the styling and location, her natural style focuses on the natural beauty of a face, enhancing shapes and colours rather than creating makeup that draws away from the aesthetic of the shoot. The glowing rose used on the model’s skin worked perfectly.

LUCY’S 138

Chemistry is everything on a photoshoot. Everyone pulls their weight, work comes easy, and most of all, everyone has fun. I could not have had a better experience during this production of “Teenager.” It’s been a privilege to work with such inspiring women. Delaney, the model who doubles as a talented actress, brought vibrance and energy drawn from her theater experience to the shoot. Sarah, the hairstylist, not only did an incredible job with the hair; she also provided jewelry and different concepts throughout the shoot. Devin, Delaney’s manager, trained Delaney to absolute perfection! I learned so much from all these unique women, and before I describe how they did that, I’d like to first talk about each and every one of them. Sarah has been in the Beauty Industry for nearly 15 years giving her a wealth of knowledge and experience. From working as a Session Stylist on editorial shoots both on set and production, to creative planning and hair show execution, Sarah’s extensive background in the field allows her to aid with more than just the hair during the shoot. During the production of this editorial, Sarah didn’t even give me a chance to freak out because she solved every single issue we ran into. “Shit, what about the jewelry?” I had lamented after realizing that I hadn’t organized for a jewelry designer to join the creative team. Out of nowhere, Sarah pulled out a massive collection of exquisite jewelry and neck pieces right out of her bag. I’ve worked with Sarah more than a handful of times, and I still cannot figure out what type of witchcraft was at play. Delaney, a musical theater student at Vista Ridge High School, has been an actress long before she ever modeled. Because of this, despite being a new model, the poses came seemingly natural to her. I remember only directing Delaney on a new poses. During the shoot, she would break out into laughter, and those ended up being the photos chosen for the editorial. Before we knew it, the shoot had ended. I still am amazed by how much of a natural Delaney is. On top of this, I am surprised by how well she took directions, “pretend like someone sat at your seat during lunch and ate your pudding?” Although Delaney would first break into laughter, she would then give me the best “how could you steal my seat and my pudding” face I’ve ever seen. Devin is an agency owner, and before she started her agency, she was a photographer. I think it is because of this, she understands what photographers look for, and how to train the models accordingly. She continues to strive both as an agent and a photographer despite being a woman in a male dominated industry. Since I started my photography and makeup journey, I noticed that most photographers I meet are men. To me, photography is a way to express your view of the world. Because of this, I think it is significant to have diversity in the different narratives of visual storytelling. To me, Devin is a pioneer as she continues to inspire not only creatives like myself to work harder, and always have the courage to share our perspective to the industry. I think each of these women helped me grow tremendously. Sarah taught me how to pull a shoot together. Delaney taught me how to keep the shoot light-hearted and fun. And Devin taught me how to continue to push myself despite having certain setbacks in my career. I am so lucky to meet amazing women on a daily basis that continue to inspire me and push me forward. I think it was only until I started photography that I appreciated a female community so much. I learned that photography is more than production, it’s more than art--it’s a conversation.

Miami

I am a NYC photographer, which means when it gets cold in the winters, I always find excuses to travel somewhere warm. So, when a girlfriend of mine asked me to come to Miami to get some sun on the beach and work out together, it was an easy decision. However, I knew one thing that would make my trip even better, if I met up with my friend, make-up artist, and hair stylist Briana Chapman to shoot. Briana and I have a history where I visit her in different places and we make beautiful images together. I knew she was down in Florida at the time and was excited when she jumped on the excuse to shoot! She threw a few ideas at me, but when she said an athletic editorial, I knew that was the one. You see, the main reason why I was going down to Miami was to be with my friend Natalia, who I know because we are both acrobats. We actually met in a flying trapeze class. I am a competitive pole dancer, and at Natalia’s learning rate, she will be performing on pole sooner than we know it. Natalia was particularly excited to have me down because Miami’s “Muscle Beach” has a pole in the sand! Miami’s “Muscle Beach” is pretty tiny, but it is really cute. I knew when I saw pictures of it, it would be the perfect location for our shoot! There was also the extra bonus that I would be able to location scout while doing tricks! Our beautiful model Margarita, might not be as much of a dare devil as me, but I was able to push her boundaries a little on this shoot and we all had an amazing time.

I was wrong.

LUCY’S 195

Some years ago, I sat on the wrong side of the fashion industry. I was working as a fashion photographer and was a size 8/10. I thought models were unary. Sample sizes are a 0/2, so models are as such. It must be this way to simplify for the designers. Not to mention a slim model is, obviously, the best clothing hanger. It’s this way for a reason. Why mess with a good thing? Why change what’s working? Yeah, it wasn’t working. It was already broken. I just couldn’t see it. I grew up with what I would now say is a troubling view of size and weight, although at the time it felt like normalcy. I had a grandmother who withheld dessert when I went through a “fat” stage around age 8. I’ll never forget the day she took away my Fudge Rounds. I used to get one each day after school. I would sit down with a Fudge Round and a glass of milk and lose myself in My Little Pony. Consequently, I soon lost interest in the show. One wonders if it was ever about the show at all. Then I was convinced I would be prettier if only I would diet or consume less calories. As a result, I was practicing some form or another of withholding from about age 12 forward. As a sophomore in high school, I never wore shorts because my legs were too fat. I was a size 4, but if I could make it to a size 2 or even a 0 I would be able to wear whatever I wanted. The world would be my oyster. The best things in life come in small packages. I ate a donut this morning, so I had better skip lunch. As I got older, I was able to suppress the voices and violently vanquished them to the recesses of my mind. Deep down in the far back where I wouldn’t consciously notice them. I slowly gained some weight from age 18 to 25. It was a gradual burn to a size 8/10. Here I was working as a photographer full time and photographing models. I wasn’t their size, though I desperately wanted to be (and still do sometimes). I was built on opinions of what being “skinny” meant: status, happiness, perfection, and actualization. I was surrounding myself with muses and simultaneously drowning in misery, though I didn’t realize it. Remember, we keep the real explanations deep down. So deep that they’re just whispers. Maybe they’re not there at all. I was on the cusp of being unworthy for designer apparel, although why I cared is beyond me. I couldn’t afford it. I was inching close to being a plus-size and I didn’t even own a Chanel suit yet. Do they make them for “fat” people? Do they make them for me? I want to be iconic before I die. Please. I spent many years yo-yoing with my weight: losing and gaining and losing and gaining. I was a solid 10 now. I knew a size 12 would be pushing it. Some designers didn’t acknowledge a 12. What am I then? Then it happened. I hit that dreaded number. I teetered there, barely a 12, but at least I was still safely on the other side of plus. It’s ok here. The heat is still on and there was a roof over my head. I’m far from the heat lamp, but they kept me in the tank. THEN IT HAPPENED. Size 14. I couldn’t believe it. My life and career had taken me on an adventure around the world. After living in Prague, I moved to NYC. The minute my feet hit the dank pavement I gained, and I couldn’t stop. 50 lbs later and I was a solid 14. I was in no man’s land. Who would love me here? Why hath god forsaken me? As it happens, my endocrinologist thinks this happened thanks to PCOS and we’ll see if I ever lose the weight, but that’s beside the point and unnecessary. I was sitting in a position that I didn’t understand what to do with and how to proceed. What did this mean for my life? How could I ever be myself again? Before I discovered the sneak PCOS, I tried everything under the diet umbrella to lose weight: Keto, Atkins, Paleo, simply smelling the things I craved rather than eating them…

SHEIN bodysuit and barette CHELSEA AND WALKER jacket SKYLETY available at AMAZON earrings

LUCY’S 197 you know, all the things they promise will make you pretty again. It didn’t work. None of it. It didn’t fool me. After discovering PCOS and learning the real difficulties in losing weight, I went through a real depressed moment. I was stuck. This is me now. I can’t do anything about it. I can’t be someone else. So, what next? I’ll tell you what, I got my shit together and started believing in myself. Now I read self-help books, I tell myself what a babe I am EVERY TIME I walk past a mirror and I work out because it makes me feel good, NOT because I want to lose weight. You know what? I feel really fucking good. I feel better about myself than I’ve ever felt in my life. And I would love to chat about that more, but we’re circling back to the real important conclusion I drew from a lifetime of nonsense: the fashion industry is inordinately fucked up. We know this now. We’ve known this for years. We’re surrounded by a revolution that I’m so glad to hear I’ve fully joined the ranks and am woke. But, how far do we still need to go? A hell of a lot further. This photo shoot for Lucy’s Magazine was a real smack in the face. I was so lucky to work with such a stellar team, but pulling clothing from showrooms to complete this spread was a real bitch-a-roony-doony. Check this out: I contacted almost 30 showrooms to see about pulling plus-size clothing, knowing full well this was going to be a challenge. I knew a lot of brands wouldn’t carry plus-sizes samples regardless of what they sold commercially. I fully understood that the fashion industry is not self-actualized…yet. What I didn’t realize was how far we still were. Out of every showroom I contacted only three had plus-size samples, and although three showrooms had them, only three designers carried plus. One designer from each showroom. This doesn’t include any showrooms specific to only one brand. They were all showrooms that carried an umbrella of designers. So, out of what I would guess are at least 100 designers carried amongst an array of showrooms, at minimum, four designers carried plus. I need to give a huge round of applause to Georgia by Chelsea and Walker, Kelsey Randall, Leo & Lin and Yona New York for being here for the every-woman! Part of me wants to call it bravery to carry plus in showroom, but that’s not correct. It’s doing what’s right for the masses and I commend you. To everyone else: that’s appalling. That’s just not good enough. I can’t believe that in 2019 this is where we’re sitting. Of course, I’m sure there are plenty of other showrooms with some designers that carry plus, but in this day-and-age that should be everyone. Carte blanche! There are too many plus-size (or ever goddamn size) celebrities, socialites, influencers, etc. to be missing that part of the market. It reminds me of Bebe Rexha calling out designers not wanting to dress her due to her size. It’s disgusting. Carrying commercial plus can’t be where we draw the line, and a lot of times rather poorly because plus-size women want to look just as damn cool as everyone else. And don’t get me started on some of the fit problems. We’ll be here all day! All of this being said, I want to end this on a positive note. We’re living in a time of increased self-awareness. 2019 is an age of bringing what’s wrong to the table and challenging society to do what’s right for the people. I’m participating with eyes wide open and marching toward a world where sizism is an issue of the past. The plethora of human beings who are operating in an open and honest way in the world and social media and bringing to light the realities of weight and size are truly warriors and I’m here for the normalization of it all. I’m so proud to be a plus-size woman and to celebrate all body types in this world. I can’t wait for the day where women of all sizes walk down runways for top designers. I know it’s coming. I can feel it in my bones. We’re not there yet, but a new world is coming. So, designers, if you want to hurry up the process, get some more diversity in your samples, in your fashion shows, in your look books, and your campaigns. I guarantee the world will applaud you for it. I bet you’ll even make a buck or two. Here’s to a better fashion industry! Here’s to Utopia!

Ruth Roche is a legend in the hair world having won NAHA 5 times. We wanted to create something that would employ her brilliant skill set. We decided to do something very sculptural and slightly alien like. Marc Cornwall did the beautiful makeup on the gorgeous Mackenzie Grayce. It was one of those shoots that just had a beautiful flow. We are all thrilled with the end result and excited to share it. - Mike

My Way Unapologetically deconstructed tailored looks are stronger then ever this season in high fashion leading to style gender freedom in power and casual dressing. New volumes and new dares are defying my étiquette… My way. Something old, something new and something borrowed; the styling storyline of My Way is inspired from the old fashion tailoring line and the freedom of the current fashion disruption vibes in the way we push stylistic conventional boundaries. Elements of the traditional suiting up essence are combined to create a personal view of things. From vintage tailoring pieces to new bespoke styles and unusual millinery curated styles, we mix and stir up the story of a young yet educated rebel with a fresh face and assumed manners. Karima Vézina brings a rather classic meets top beauty trends pout to Sara, framing her beautiful face with bold under eye line and a dramatic hairdo that recalls the spirit of the roaring 20S and the barber culture.

SILHOUTTES of an impossible being, landscapes of ruins that appear as if through a tulle, subtle colors that merge in the air like atoms that swim in the light. Ideas without words, beauty, rebelliousness all without guide but images of freedom as main inspiration. The spirit of a child is meant to be wild, wicked and free, to find a place in this world to be one’s most authentic version of oneself. - Daniel Negron
