Collage: Sleepy City Busy city are surrounded by noisy, young people working day and night forget the time. They are tired, the people is tired, the city is tired, even the time is tired. People closed their eyes, their body feeling like a cloud, falling drow from the sky. If there is a bed, they can perfectly fall on it, it will be comforteble. Suddenly, they open their eyes, "I need a bed, I need sleep"! Young people run to the rest area, a moment for sleep, a moment to keep away from the busy life, for them, it's enough. Who are they? They are sleepy people, they are busy in everyday’s work, but can’t find a bed to relax. They are young people, they just work for few years, they can’t afford to live near their companey, they just need a room, a room belonging to them. They are young travellers, they want to meet people, they wan to share stories, and know different culture. Why they are there? They need to relax, maybe a noon break, maybe sleep a while, maybe to find a place to escape from the world. They need a shelter, that one light is light for them in the night, they need a place to stay that they can afford it and live comfortably. They need a safe place to protect them in the journey, at the seam time there are many same age young people, some are working in this city, some were traveled many place, everyone can bring news, every news are new worlds for them. In this task we were asked to use pair of materials (select two from Concrete, Timber, Stone, Brick)to conduct a series of experiemts to creat samples with sensory/atmospheric characteristics that could be used in a welcoming, comfortable, hospitable building. I chose concrete and timber as my materials. As to thinking about the difference between concrete and timber, concrete gives people a feeling of hard, cold, stable, and timber gives people a feeling of soft, warm, flexible. The theme of this project is to creat a place to stay which should contain hospitable and comfortable at the same time, this means it should handle the relationship between private space and public space. Concrete is been used in public space like aisles, courtyard and entrance, which means wealcome, walkable. Timber is been used in private areas like flats interior, internal entrance, which means comfortable stay in and privacy.

02 Visible Melody

Liverpool University 2018 Spring Architecture Studio—— Jazz Club Tutor: Ronny Ford Site: Liverpool, England Building Area: 1225 m² Individual Work

A visible building standing on the busy street, whenever people passing by, this Jazz Loft attract people by the music and peromence of the Jazz people daily practice. When this site faced two streets, one is busy and crowded, another one is quite and seldom people, it has two different faces. Inspired by the New York "Jazz Loft", and the Jazz music relation between Liverpool and New york, this building has three visible staircase which is a symble of Jazz Loft in New York. There are four floors inside this Jazz Loft. The entrance to the Jazz club is hiding behide the waterscape on the ground floor, it can lead people to the underground, which contained Jazz Loft stage and bar and dining area. Ground floor includes practice rooms, recording rooms and class rooms. On the street people can watch inside from the shop window, like a daily perfomence. First floors has a public rest area for staffs and students, though the window, it is a good view of the Bold street. Second floor is staff dormitory, also contained a public roof garden.

Design Strategy Because of jazz music, Liverpool and New York have a connection. Jazz Loft shows New York jazz artists living in the same building, creating, living, and performing. One of the abstract impressions of the building is a black silhouette, a night window, a bright window, a jazz man playing, and a black fire stairs. The Bold St next to the Site is a bustling commercial street, so the faรงade facing this side should be clearly visible; the other side of the Wood St is a secluded path with few people, the most lively time is the night, when the Clubs open the door At the same time, the dim light, industrial street, makes this street a little more uneasy factor, so the facade on this side can show an industrial temperament, conservative, sturdy. At the same time, the silhouette of Jazz Loft, the black staircase was also applied to the building. Every staircase in the building is also visible, and the jazz musician's practice room in the building is also displayed as a performance to the tourists on the street. This will be a visible, living jazz music building

03 MEET YOU ON THE WAY

Liverpool University 2017 Fall Architecture Studio—— Pavilione la Fornersina Tutor: Ronny Ford, Phil Owen Site: Rome, Italy Building Area: 1000 m² Individual Work

Farnesina is a villa built in the time of Renaissance, it was belonging to the famous Rome banker Chigi. In 1518, Raphael was invited by his friend Chigi to paint in the hall of ground floor. Rafael painted in the villa during work times and walked to the surrounding shops and cafes in his spare time. At this time he met and fell in love with a girl whose name was Fornarina. Fornarina is the daughter of the baker in the street corner bakery. After Rafael and she became lovers, he often used her as a model to paint, and some saying said that many Virgin that Raphael drawn were based on her appearance. In architecture a pavilion , may refer to a freestanding structure sited a short distance from a main residence, whose architecture makes it an object of pleasure. Large or small, there is usually a connection with relaxation and pleasure in its intended use. This project's aim is to creat a pavilione which more like a visitor centor, use this love story as the theme. By using connect Villa Farnesina and baker house, a straight line cross the site, and based on this line, a rote can be created. This might be the way Raphael come to see Fornarina. This pavilione was been built on this way.

25

Design Strategy This pavilion is located in the garden of the villa and it needs to conform to the surroundings of Rome, Renaissance architecture. Here I chose the Neue Staatsgalerie from James Stirling to restore the atrium and stone of ancient Roman architecture in a nostalgic way. At the same time, the stage set of the Olympic Theatre is shown to show the alleys of Rome, which are slender and narrow, which inspired the scene design of the main entrance, in order to suppress the feeling of walking on

Design Strategy

This is the faรงade design on both sides of the first floor of an office building. The office building is located in Chengdu, China, a beautiful and pleasant technical office area. The two walls face the central courtyard opposite the small residential area. Considering the maintenance of the landscape in the courtyard, I decided to fade the wall in a blanking manner. The overall shape of the building is tilted into the courtyard, like a sloping bowl that pours water out of the gap. At the same time, the skin elements of the facade are staggered vertical lines. Finally, the elements that emphasize the vertical with stones are selected to express the solidified flowing water. The scattered stone groups can also interact with people. The artificial waterfall is used to express the water flow at the corner.

02 Three Hats For Picnic Xi'an Jiaotong Liverpool University 2016 Fall Architecture Studio—— Architectural thingking design Tutor: Lina Stergiou Hats making: Group Work ( Lu Dai Xintong Li Tianyi Song Qianru Li) Development drawing: Individual Work Design requirements

Imagine there are three characters with different personalities. They are a mother who loves to read and enjoy the sun, a little girl who wants to go out to ride a bicycle but is stopped by her mother, and a painter who likes to paint. The task of this design is to design hats for the three characters. The hats are both independent and connected. They have to take the hat together for a picnic. Production materials are limited to: chopsticks, cardboard, cotton, glue.

Design Development

The elements that make up the mother's hat are: a straw hat-like woven with a chopstick, and a handrail attached to the hat, which helps the mother to read the book. The elements that make up the child's hat are: bicycle helmet made of paper, a single wheel made of chopsticks, and a pedal connected to the hat. The elements that make up the painter's hat are: a pen holder with a cotton thread and a paper, a drawing board connected to the hat, and a bracket that can be placed on the hat.

42

Void From plane to solid

In the picnic, we painted the outline of the hat on the white paper on the floor, making it a closed figure. According to the figure, I imagine the three-dimensional body block and express it in a sketch. Finally, I use the dough to pinch out the solid body block combination. After that, wrap the body with a larger piece of dough. After it is harden, take out the dough and get a space cut.

Reimagine the activity

After getting the spatial aspect, I began to re-imagine the activities inside the space. Different heights can lead to different activities. I chose the activity of riding a bicycle, recorded the dynamic process in a photo, and depicted the scene into the space to complete the imagination of the space activity.
