Welcome Open for over 100 years with a vast history, Ashford (Kent) Golf Club has created a respected reputation in the heart of Kent. After years of honing our craft and the quality of our course, we provide members and visitors alike with a unique golfing experience. We enjoy our golf on a mature parkland course which was first laid out in 1926. With many feature pine and oak trees, narrow fairways and small greens it provides a good test for golfers of all abilities. Visitors frequently compliment us on the quality of the course and invariably enjoy their visit.

Visitors are always welcomed. Societies are always welcome, these can be arranged directly with our club manager to suit your requirements. Green fees may be booked online. Our annual Open Week is a well established feature of golf in Kent and is staged at the beginning of June each year. The club is owned by its 500 or so members and celebrated its centenary in 2003. We encourage all golfers, with active junior, ladies and veterans sections and provide a full schedule of competitions and fun events which makes the club a welcoming, friendly and vibrant environment to enjoy all year round.

History The Club was founded by twenty members on 27th April 1903. It started playing that same year on a seven hole course at Bybrook – about a mile and a half west of the present course. The initial subscription was two guineas and the cost of laying the course out and the first year’s operations was £182.10. By the end of the second year the course had been extended to nine holes. The club thrived in its early years with membership in the second year of 90, 40 of whom were ladies. The First World War saw a huge decline in membership but the Club struggled through to the summer of 1918. Unaware that the armistice was just a few months away the Club decided that the course had to close, even temporarily.

6 | www.ashfordgolfclub.co.uk

The Club re-opened in 1919 with 90 members and a new groundsman / professional. By 1923 the membership had grown to 160. In 1925 the lease of the then existing course was terminated but the Club was offered the opportunity to buy 130 acres at Sandyhurst Farm. Surmounting huge difficulties in raising the necessary finance, the Club opened its new 18 hole course in 1927. The course was designed and construction supervised by David Herd, the professional at Littlestone. In 1933 the Club elected its first Lady President – Miss Jeanne de Casalis in recognition of her huge efforts in raising finance for the Club and other local causes.

Battling financial pressures all the while the Club grew steadily until the Second World War. Notwithstanding a hugely diminished membership, the loss of 20 acres of land requisitioned for food production and huge concentrations of bombing in the district play continued throughout the hostilities.

The Club grew gradually until 1962 with about 250 members. In that year no fewer than 140 new members were elected and the Club appointed its first paid part time Secretary / Treasurer. A waiting list was created and joining fees created. Membership stood at about 550 in 1965.

By the end of the war there were only 46 members left. Nevertheless the Club picked up again after the war. The missing 20 acres were sold and the course re-designed on the remaining 100 acres with C K Cotton retained as architect.

The last major upheaval occurred in 1980 when the course was remodeled and the present clubhouse constructed.

About the Course Ashford is a golfer’s golf course for the connoisseur and a delight to the eye in all seasons. Members take a special pride in the quality of its layout and presentation.

For the handicap golfer with more modest ambitions you will find a good test of your course management and short game skills, but without being concerned at losing too many golf balls.

First laid out in 1926 and with modifications some 30 years ago it is now a mature inland parkland course.

Kevin Hayward our Course Manager has over 20 years in depth experience of the course agronomy. With his dedicated team he works tirelessly to present the course in its best condition in all seasons.

The course features a woodland edge, fairways ranging from 25 to 35 yards in width, challenging greens and standing or running water on 13 holes. A glance at the card of the course may tempt the stronger golfer to believe that with modern technique and equipment the course can be overpowered. This rarely happens. Par is always a good score. The amateur course record is 66 and the professional course record is 62; these have stood for many years.

The course committee has adopted a policy of continuous investment and improvement in the course. For 2012 the main investment was a new borehole to ensure, insofar as possible, that we can maintain our greens in tip top condition against the possibility of a continuing drought.

Course Tour Our course in the heart of Kent is a pleasure to play on, and if you’ve never played at Ashford (Kent) Golf Club before you are in for a real treat. Make the most our hole by hole guide prior to your trip; an opportunity to learn about what you can expect on each hole, and how best to play the course from the white tees.

Hole 1, Par 4, 376 Yards – A tough opening blind tee shot, beware the hidden pond on the right. Your drive should ideally be left-of-centre giving a more straightforward approach to a two-tier green. Greenside hazards include bunkers left and right and a ditch which runs across the front of the green.

Hole 2, Par 4, 388 Yards – The drive needs to favour the left side of the fairway; longer hitters may need to lay up short of the second ditch. Drives to the right side of the fairway could be bunkered or blocked by mature trees for the second shot. The uphill approach to the green plays longer than it looks, take one more club!

10 | www.ashfordgolfclub.co.uk

Hole 3, Par 4, 420 Yards –

Hole 5, Par 3, 123 Yards –

Stroke index one which requires a long straight drive, mature trees left and right. The bunker short left of the green catches many off-centre shots. Too far right and you could bounce off the sloping apron into a greenside bunker. Keep any approach shot below the hole to avoid a fast tricky downhill putt.

The shortest hole on the course, named as Fagg’s Folly, but can still be an early card wrecker. Aim to find the large sloping green otherwise you could be fortunate to make a Bogey. Deep pond short, a stream right and bunkers left, so the middle of the green is your target.

Hole 4, Par 4, 396 Yards – One of the hardest holes on the course which plays much longer than the yardage suggests as it’s deceptively uphill when approaching the green. A difficult drive as there is a ditch on the left and mature trees on the right. A bunker on the right side of the fairway protects the green and a deep bunker, short left, will punish those who under club.

Hole 6, Par 4, 370 Yards – A very demanding tee shot, ideally, long and left of centre. Ditches and trees both left and right are there to catch an errant drive. The second shot is over a cross ditch to a shallow green protected by bunkers, and plays shorter than appears.

www.ashfordgolfclub.co.uk | 11

Course Tour Continued Hole 7, Par 4, 384 Yards –

Hole 9, Par 5, 488 Yards –

A long, straight tee shot required here. Hazards include out-of-bounds and trees on the left. A fairway bunker and deep ditch on the right will punish wayward shots. Hit your approach shot too long and a steep slope through the green leaves an awkward return chip.

A long up-hill Par 5 but can still be a Birdie chance. A good drive, left of centre is essential to go for the green in two for long hitters. Your second shot needs to be hit straight to avoid trees on the right and outof-bounds protecting the practice area on the left. The green is sheltered amongst trees, protected by bunkers short left and right. Avoid missing the green long or right as it’s near impossible to get up and down.

Hole 8, Par 3, 175 Yards – This is a strong Par 3 hole. Bunkers protect the left and right of a large green so club selection is vital, the sheltered tee can often hide the swirling wind. A three is a good score.

12 | www.ashfordgolfclub.co.uk

Hole 10, Par 5, 483 Yards – A down-hill hole, which gives players a chance of a birdie. Long hitters can reach in two but will need a good straight drive. A blind second shot needs to be threaded between the fairway bunker on the left and greenside bunkers left and right. Avoid the hazards and a four is possible.

Hole 11, Par 4, 362 Yards –

Hole 13, Par 4, 323 Yards –

This hole requires a right-of-centre tee shot, avoiding the trees. Any drive too far left could be in danger of going out-of-bounds. Players will need a good second shot over the stream to a two-tiered green. An accurate pitch is required to get close to a pin on the front section of the green.

A short Par 4, this hole is a good birdie chance but only after a straight drive through a narrow tree-lined gap. Bail out to the right and the second shot becomes difficult as bunkers protect that side of the green. The green slopes front to back so approach shots may need to land short to finish near to front-of-green pins.

Hole 12, Par 4, 417 Yards – One of the toughest holes on our course. Out-of-bounds runs down the left, so drive right-of-centre on the first shot. An accurate approach shot, to an elevated green, needs to be straight to avoid deep greenside bunkers, left and right. A sloping green, back to front, so try to avoid a putt from above the hole which will be quick and difficult to read.

Hole 14, Par 3, 159 Yards – A short Par 3 requiring a straight shot to fairly large green. Bunkers left and long bunker on right. Good tee shot can give a reasonable birdie opportunity.

Course Tour Continued Hole 15, Par 4, 357 Yards –

Hole 17, Par 5, 528 Yards –

Position of tee shot crucial here, too much fade and you are blocked out by the oak. Be sensible and aim for the marker post to leave the ideal angle into an undulating green. Keep your approach short of the pin.

Good drive requiring a draw from the tree (for right handed golfers). Longer hitters can reach the green using the slope from the left side of the green; anything right brings the ditch and greenside pond into play.

Hole 16, Par 4, 370 Yards –

Hole 18, Par 3, 194 Yards –

Mid iron / Rescue to the corner of this dog leg hole leaves an approach shot to a green guarded by bunkers short left and right either side of green. Big hitters can cut the corner and go for the green, dangerous shot, only for the brave.

A demanding finishing Par 3 which plays longer than its yardage. Well struck shot needs to clear front bunker. Bunkers left, right and back make this a small target.

Custom Fitting There has been a growing realisation in recent times that, along with professional coaching, golf equipment should allow each player to make the most of whatever level of natural talent they possess.

and develop a better swing plane. Without doubt, this results in better scores. Our Head Professional, Chris Wood, is a Titleist advanced fitting partner, one of only two in the South region of this country.

Clubs bought off the shelf will be of a standard specification, but unfortunately golfers are not-we come in all shapes and sizes! The reality is that a golfer could have a perfectly acceptable technique but still be held back because their clubs are not entirely suited to their swing. This is where custom fitting comes in...

Advanced Fitting Partners feature Titleist facilities who make club fitting the centrepiece of their daily selling activities. These partners are equipped with the highest level of Fitting combinations provided to authorised Titleist Fitters and alongside a state of the art launch monitor enable partners to offer a high level of service for golfers who want an in-depth and thorough fitting experience.

Custom fitting is a relatively new phenomenon which allows a set of clubs to be married with each golfers’ physique and swing characteristics, no matter what their playing ability. We understand the importance of being fitted correctly, whether for a glove, pair of shoes or ultimately for a set of golf clubs. Customising the golf clubs according to the users physical characteristics will train the individual to address the ball with the correct posture

Every player is different so it is crucial to game improvement that your clubs are custom fitted; selecting the correct shaft, length and lie angle. We have a vast range of custom fit options so please contact Chris for more information at the Pro Shop on 01233-622655 Option 3.
