Bath and the Cotswolds
N
ourished by natural hot springs, Bath offers a unique experience with stunning architecture, great shopping and iconic attractions. Situated at the southern end of the Cotswold Way, the golden city of Bath has been welcoming visitors for over 2,000 years.
At the heart of the city, next to the Abbey, is the Roman Baths Museum, which gives a fascinating insight into the original bathing complex and the great Roman temple of Sulis Minerva. Above the Museum in the 18th century Pump Room you can taste the waters, enjoy a meal and listen to music from the Pump Room Trio.
Designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, Bath is home to some of the most impressive architectural sights in the world including the Royal Crescent, the Circus and Pulteney Bridge.
The Cotswolds covers an area of 790 square miles in South- West England and is the country’s largest officially designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
www.bathgolfclub.org.uk
Bath is a popular destination for visitors from all over the world, the area is well known for gentle hillsides (‘wolds’), outstanding countryside with river valleys, water meadows and beech woods, sleepy ancient limestone villages and historic market towns. Throughout the Cotswolds, stone features in buildings and walls and provides a common thread, seamlessly blending the historic towns and villages with the surrounding landscape. The countryside is seen as ‘typically English’, as though time has stood still for 300 years.

The Course and its History
B
ath is one of the finest and oldest courses in England. Originally laid out in the 1880s using the natural contours of its hilltop location, it was redesigned in 1937 by the legendary course architect, Harry S. Colt, and now measures over 6,500 yards with a par 71 for the men and 74 for the ladies.
14 Bath Golf Club
The course is full of variety and is laid out over fine golfing country. Springy downland turf over shallow soil and limestone ensures rapid draining and the course is usually in superb condition. The greens present a special challenge, being relatively small and containing hidden, and sometimes not so hidden, borrows.
Affectionately known as “Sham Castle” by the locals, the course earned its nickname from the neighbouring architectural folly. The ‘castle’ stands in a field next to the course and although it looks like the entrance gate to an impressive baronial hall, is in fact nothing more than a single wall. It was built during Bath’s 18th century heyday at the request of Ralph Allen from his own Bath stone in order, as he himself wrote, “to charm all visitors to Bath”.
www.bathgolfclub.org.uk
We are able to offer history, tradition and one of the best golf courses in the South West of England. In 2010, Bath Golf Club was featured in Golf Monthly. The journalist, a great fan of Harry Colt, was thrilled at the prospect of playing one of Harry’s courses. He spoke highly of numerous exciting holes and an extremely friendly clubhouse and wrote: “The excellent course at Sham Castle was no disappointment. In fine condition and perched high up on Hampton Down it has panoramic views down over the Georgian City and across the Avon Valley”.
www.bathgolfclub.org.uk
The Club is committed to making continual improvements to the course, through the efforts of our Head Greenkeeper and his staff, investing in the latest equipment and methods. They work hard to present a course that is in excellent condition throughout the year. We are fortunate to have a limestonebased soil that drains well in the wetter months, but retains moisture in the drier ones, helped by water sprinklers around the greens and tees.

The Course and its History (continued) Nature lovers will delight in the plants and wildlife on the course, with managed wild meadows alongside many fairways, flowers such as orchids, red clover and wild mint and birds including nesting skylarks, buzzards and hunting peregrine falcons.
www.bathgolfclub.org.uk
The course is a rich archaeological landscape and eight holes and some of the practice facilities sit on an ancient Iron Age Hill Fort. Other prehistoric evidence abounds including Celtic field, patterns and ancient stones which provide useful distance markers on some fairways plus later relics including the bomb like craters of 18th century surface stone quarrying.

Playing Golf at Bath Golf Club
A
s a private members’ club, we pride ourselves on catering for all golfing needs. Competitions are held regularly for all our membership categories. We have a team playing formal and informal matches against other clubs, for men, ladies, mixed, seniors, nomads and juniors.
www.bathgolfclub.org.uk
There are several roll-ups during the week, offering all members the certainty of a game and a chance to meet other members. We have successfully introduced an online tee booking system for members and we are extending this to visitors. This gives all players the security of knowing they have a tee time, and the ability to avoid crowded periods. Some times are left open to cater for those who prefer not to book.
We welcome both individual visitors, and societies and corporate golfers. A range of green fees and packages is available. For more information see the separate section on societies, visit our website or contact the office.

www.bathgolfclub.org.uk
• Open and invitation competitions: when we welcome players from other clubs. Ladies The Ladies’ section is a friendly, supportive group of over 100 members. he extensive expertise and knowledge in their field allied to the use of state-of-of-the-art technology not only enables our professionals to give more efficient and effective lessons, but enables them to assist each golfer to choose exactly the right equipment for their individual needs.
www.bathgolfclub.org.uk
To obtain and analyse the technical data they require to identify the best equipment for you, Russell and his team employ the Flightscope X2 Radar system. This fitting/ analysis tool provides accurate feedback regarding the ball dynamics in flight and tells them how efficiently the clubs are performing. Then, through testing with varying options of shaft weight, bend profile, flex and club loft, it provides them with the hard evidence necessary to recommend the best club set up for a player. This valuable information can double the effects of any equipment changes which in turn boosts player confidence levels.
Of course interpreting the data provided by Flightscope requires a level of expertise which all of the professionals at Bath Golf Club possess.Their advice is carefully considered in the context of a player’s existing skill level, individual objectives, physiology and playing needs as well as time availability, tuition plans and budget. The data captured can, if required, be forwarded to a third party swing coach.
