President’s Welcome A

s a club member for over 30 years and in my first year as President I am delighted to welcome you to Buckingham Golf Club. Celebrating our centenary in 2014 was a proud moment for us and a testament to the numerous members who volunteer to ensure the Club’s ongoing success. Key to that success is maintaining the right balance between adapting and improving the Club’s facilities

whilst maintaining the long standing tradition of a members’ club. The introduction of a new In-door Swing Studio and a new academy membership aimed at complete beginners are both examples of our ongoing vision to provide a warm and friendly environment offering the best facilities for all members and visitors. The Club has thriving playing sections across men, ladies, mixed, seniors and juniors and a comprehensive program of competitions throughout the playing season.

The Clubhouse facilities are enjoyed by the members for club events but also available for hire for both business and private functions. Whether you are a new member or a visitor there is an excellent team always available and waiting to make you feel welcome. I am sure that, whether for a long stay or short visit, you will enjoy all the facilities that our club has to offer. Julian Rowett, Club President.

History B

uckingham Golf Club was established in 1914 and is a classic parkland design amongst the rolling hills of the north Buckinghamshire countryside.

According to hearsay, prior to 1914 golfers played a 5-hole course on or adjacent to the current site. The first available record, however, is the formation of Buckingham Golf Club Limited by four local gentlemen in the early part of 1914. Land was leased and a 9-hole course was laid out, which opened that September. In the early 1920s, the limited company was dissolved, and Buckingham became a members’ club.

6 | BUCKINGHAM GOLF CLUB

After World War 1 some ex-army packing cases were purchased to make sheds for the members’ bicycles. A horse was also purchased for 20 guineas to pull the mowers. An agreement was made with the London Midland Railway that, if golfers asked the guard, trains would stop in Radclive Village. In 1927 a Clubhouse was built, the major part of which was in use until 1977.

The Club progressed on through the Second World War having many ups and downs but always with a record for a very testing, quality golf course. A most significant period for the Club was the 1970s. Some land was purchased, more land was leased and in 1977 the course was extended to 18 holes. In 1978 the new Clubhouse was opened. During the 1980s and into the 1990s, land which had previously been leased was purchased and the Clubhouse was twice extended to accommodate a bar, dining area, changing rooms, Professional’s shop and Secretary’s office. A practice ground and new facilities for the course manager and his machinery were also added.

History In 2004 the Club embarked on perhaps the most ambitious project of all when the members agreed to replace all 18 greens with new greens built to USGA specification. The opportunity was also taken to extend two holes and rebuild the bunkers on the course. The results of this project mean that Buckingham Golf Club can offer a quality golf course with excellent greens, providing a good test of golf throughout the year, to golfers of all abilities. In 2014 in conjunction with the Markham Trust we opened a 10bay covered driving range which offers excellent facilities for our members to improve their golf and allows our Professional to run his coaching sessions in comfort.

The above picture shows Charles Bertram ‘Bert’ Jarman a very influential figure in our history, handing over Presidency of the Club after 19 years to Bill Booth. As President from 1961 to 1980, Bert Jarman twice stood as guarantor for loans in 1976 and 1977 to build the second nine holes and the new Clubhouse.

Sadly, many of those members who helped develop the Club are no longer with us, but their legacy lives on in the Clubhouse, course and facilities that you see today. The current members and committee are determined to maintain the Club’s reputation as a friendly, welcoming golf club and not just a golf course. That was the aim of the four local gentlemen back in 1914, something we continue to this day.

About The Course B

uckingham is a mature parkland course with 18 challenging holes in excellent condition. The original 9-hole course was laid out in 1914 and extended to 18 in 1976. In 2004 all 18 greens were re-designed to USGA specification, which enables year-round play.

Most holes are tree lined and all but one of the greens are guarded by well-placed bunkers. In addition, water comes into play on 9 of the 18 holes.

The Club has a large practice area with 10 covered bays and levelled turf areas to hit from. There are also practice bunkers and a 9-hole practice putting green.

BUCKINGHAM GOLF CLUB | 11

Course Guide B

uckingham Golf Club is an enjoyable course to play at any time of the year. Before you play, take advantage of our hole-by-hole guide to learn a little about the course and how to play it.

Hole 1 A challenging opening hole that offers the choice of laying up short of the stream or taking out the driver to clear the water. The second shot is an uphill approach to the green with bunkers front left and right.

Hole 3 Drive to the top of the hill and place your second on the right side of the fairway to avoid the two fairway bunkers on the left. This will leave a pitch to the two-tier green for the third shot.

Hole 2 This is a long left-to-right dog-leg par four. Drive to the right of the two oak trees at the top of the hill and beware the two large bunkers short and right of the green when hitting your approach.

Hole 4 Our signature hole, this requires an accurate tee-shot down the slope to clear the stream and avoid the five bunkers surrounding the green.

12 | BUCKINGHAM GOLF CLUB

Hole 5 An accurate and long tee shot might reach the green, well-guarded by four bunkers. For shorter hitters, aim a little right and play from the bowl. Hole 6 Another accurate drive required to avoid trees on the left and right. Once on the fairway a short second shot requires accuracy to the long, thin two-tiered green.

Hole 7 Play your tee shot to the left side of the fairway with the choice of laying up or trying to clear the fairway bunker with your second. A pitch to the green needs to avoid the bunker guarding the front right of the putting surface.

Hole 9 This uphill par four requires a drive to the right-hand side of the fairway. For the second shot, make sure to use enough club as the green is elevated and plays longer than it looks. Stay to the right to avoid the two bunkers guarding the green on the left.

Hole 8 Often into the prevailing wind this tee-shot plays longer than it looks. It requires an accurate shot into a long green with a bunker to the left.

BUCKINGHAM GOLF CLUB | 13

Course Guide CONTINUED Hole 10 An accurate tee-shot is essential here. Trees line the left of the fairway and out-of-bounds is on the right. Hit to the left of the fairway bunker leaving a midto-long iron to reach the elevated green. Again, keep to the left to avoid the two bunkers on the right of the green.

14 | BUCKINGHAM GOLF CLUB

Hole 11 This par five requires a long drive down the left-hand side to avoid the fairway bunker on the right. The second shot should fall short of the next three bunkers leaving a short pitch to the large green. Hole 12 With a stroke index of 18 this is rated the easiest hole on the course. However, beware the river to your left and a bunker short and right of the green that will catch an errant shot.

Hole 13 A good tee shot is key to success on this hole. Aim for the middle of the fairway leaving a short iron to the green. A stream separates the fairway and the green to the right of the green. The river runs to the left and beyond the green. Hole 14 Hit your tee-shot to the right-hand side of the fairway to avoid the left-hand fairway bunker. This leaves a short iron to a twotier green with a bunker at the front left.

Hole 15 Another long par 3, make sure you have enough club as the green is guarded by bunkers short left and right of the green. Hole 16 This par four requires a drive down the left-hand side of the fairway to avoid the fairway bunker on the right. This will openup the green for the second shot. Two bunkers guard the front of the green on the right, there is a third bunker on the left.

Hole 17 As difficult a par four as the 2nd. This right-to-left dog-leg requires a long drive down the right-hand side of the fairway towards the group of large trees. Aim your second shot to the right-hand side as well to avoid the two bunkers short and left of the green.

Hole 18 An uphill par four back to the Clubhouse. Trees line the hole left and right but with a straight shot a short iron is left to the green. The slope means the hole plays longer than it looks, make sure to take enough club to carry the bunkers short of the green on both sides.

Practice Facilities O

ne of the often-overlooked criteria in choosing a golf club to belong to is the standard of its practice facilities.

While the course is obviously of paramount importance, the game of golf is a never-ending, sometimes frustrating, pursuit of excellence and the only way to improve is by spending time working on the areas of our game that do not meet one’s hopes or expectations. Without the appropriate facilities there is no incentive to get better but at Buckingham members have no excuse because we have excellent facilities to hone your game. The practice area is past the 10th hole and members can practice off turf or use one of the 10 covered bays recently built.

There is a practice green to chip towards which also has two bunkers close by. A 9-hole putting green is also available close to the Clubhouse. Range balls are available from the Pro Shop and if you require any other information on our practice facilities call our Professional Greg Hannah on 01280 815566 (option 2) For those who find time is at a premium, there are two practice nets next to the putting green that afford the opportunity to loosen up before beginning a round.

New for 2018 – Indoor Swing Studio N

ewly constructed and available late Summer 2018, the Indoor Swing Studio is conveniently located next to the Professional Shop, where a Foresight Sports Simulator with GC2 launch monitor have been installed. This excellent system provides instant feedback which is ideal for club fitting and lessons.

The Studio will be used for tuition by the Professional team by measuring and analysing several key statistics which can be used to guide you towards the perfect technique. Statistics including: carry distance, total distance, club-head speed, ball speed, launch angle, side-spin and accuracy can all be collected. Club fitting will also be undertaken in the Studio. Using GC2 and HMT we can recommend the equipment that is going to improve your accuracy, consistency and distance.

Game simulation is another great way for members and guests to use the Studio. Whether using the simulator as practice or competing with friends on a famous course, the Swing Studio can be hired out by the hour. For more information on the Swing Studio or to book your slot, contact the Pro Shop on 01280 815566 (option 2) or 01280 815210.

Open competitions B

uckingham is an historic golf club with a rich heritage dating back to the founding of our club in 1914. We pride ourselves on an excellent course and facilities which we are more than happy to share by staging a number of Open competitions, spread through the season, aimed at golfers from all walks of life and all abilities. The season usually starts in April with the Senior Men’s Pairs’ Open, an 18-hole better-ball

Stableford for golfers over the age of 55. In May we hold the Buckingham Am-Am, an 18hole 4-ball medal competition that sees groups of four compete against one another. In August we host a popular Mixed Open Greensomes, which is an 18-hole Stableford competition. September sees the Ladies’ Open, an 18-hole four ball better ball Stableford, as well as the Senior Men’s Individual Open in late September that rounds out the Open competition season. From 2017/18 the club has also offered a Winter Series for those golfers that wish to still compete during the winter months. This consists of a

qualifying Stableford once a month for 6 months with an overall order of merit at the end. All of our events are usually very well supported so it’s advisable to get your entries in quickly which are advertised on our web site and Golf Empire. (All events require an active CONGU handicap) Events may vary slightly from year to year, details can always be found of upcoming events and competitions on our website www.buckinghamgolfclub.co.uk, or you can contact the office on 01280 815566 (option 1)
