Welcome Founded in 1891, Burnham Beeches Golf Club is the oldest club in Buckinghamshire and provides a challenging golf course in a beautiful setting on the edge of the historic Burnham Beeches woodland.

One of the most significant members throughout our history was Lady Astor, the first woman to take a seat in the House of Commons, who was a member at Burnham for 32 years.

Steeped in history, Burnham has played host to many famous golfers, including the Great Triumvirate of James Braid, John Henry Taylor and Harry Vardon who, between them, won the Open Championship no less than 16 times.

The 18-hole course measures 6,458 yards and has a par 70, with a Standard Scratch Score of 71, offering a true and challenging test of golf.

4 | www.bbgc.co.uk

Our delightful old clubhouse has been furnished to provide comfortable and smart surroundings after your round of golf, either for drinks in the lounge or a meal in the dining room – or both.

The outstanding facilities lend themselves easily as an ideal venue for a wide range of functions including anniversaries, birthday parties and Sunday lunch. Burnham Beeches has always been a members’ club, meaning that we control our destiny through an elected Board, Captain and Committee, working alongside the staff.

We work hard at ensuring we provide everyone with fantastic service, so come and see what makes us special. The club is situated in the Thames Valley in South Buckinghamshire and is easily accessed from the M40, the M4 or the A4.

About the Course Originally designed by John Henry Taylor, Burnham Beeches provides a challenging but hugely enjoyable golf course in a beautiful setting on the edge of the historic Burnham Beeches woodland.

While the undulating layout of our course provides an interesting test of the golfer’s long game, there are a number of testing holes that examine all parts of one’s game.

Situated in the Thames Valley in South Buckinghamshire, our 18-hole course measures 6,458 yards and has a par 70, with a Standard Scratch Score of 71.

The par four 12th, for example, is the toughest hole on the card for good reason. At 440 yards even off the yellow tees it requires a long accurate drive round the right-hand dog-leg before dealing with a sloping green that can easily get away from you.

With over 100 years of history, the course benefits from having a large number of mature trees which frame the majority of the holes.

6 | www.bbgc.co.uk

The natural undulations and strategic bunkering offers a good challenge for all level of golfer. In addition with both the 9th and 18th greens near to the club house Members are able to play a quick 9 holes if they don’t have time for a full round.

The club has its own reservoir and a comprehensive irrigation system to maintain the condition of the course through hot and dry weather. With our well-furbished clubhouse and our excellent caterers, Burnham Beeches provides an ideal golf day for golfers of all abilities.

Our signature hole is the picturesque 14th, with a tough drive through two copses, making par a welcome result.

Tour the Course If you have never played at Burnham Beeches Golf Club before you are in for a treat. Make the most of your trip by learning about some of the pitfalls that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you follow our hole-byhole tour. The course is set in 132 acres and measures 6,458 yards with a par of 70, providing a test of golf no matter what standard you are. Hole 1, 355 yards, par 4 A nice gentle opener, the marker post is a good line for your tee shot. Any drive reaching the top of the hill or further will have an inviting approach to the green that is guarded by three bunkers and slopes from back to front. Any putt back down the green must be viewed with caution.

Hole 2, 424 yards, par 4 A difficult par four, this hole begins with a tough tee shot, with out of bounds on the right and a bunker on the left. If this is negotiated, then a long second shot is required, with the green tucked close to the O.O.B on the right and no bail out left. Hole 3, 177 yards, par 3 Although stroke index 18, this is by no means an easy par three. The lie of the land partially obscures the green and the distance is foreshortened with its downhill perspective. However, a solid tee shot will leave a birdie opportunity.

www.bbgc.co.uk | 9

Tour the Course Continued Hole 4, 521 yards, par 5 On this hole longer hitters have a real chance of reaching the green in two and making birdie. Two bunkers at the front protect the green, so it’s essential to use enough club for your approach.

Hole 7, 344 yards, par 4 When taking the tee shot caution must be taken with the fairway bunker but, if avoided, a possible birdie chance awaits. The green is well guarded but with a short iron the pin can be chased.

Hole 5, 430 yards, par 4 One of the toughest holes at Burnham, a long tee shot is required to reach the level part of the fairway. The approach to the green is played over a valley so anything short will stop where it lands. A tough par.

Hole 8, 401 yards, par 4 This hole is all about the tee shot. A slight draw round the corner avoiding the fairway bunker and the hard work is done. The green has two bunkers at the front but again the pin is usually accessible with a short iron.

Hole 6, 207 yards, par 3 A very testing par three, at well over two hundred yards, hitting the green is the first challenge. Once there, the green has some significant breaks that can be difficult to read.

Hole 9, 376 yards, par 4 The tee shot is crucial once again on this hole as a large pit to the right of the fairway gathers any errant shot. The green is probably the longest on the course so, if the pin is at the back take an extra club.

10 | www.bbgc.co.uk

Hole 10, 175 yards, par 3 Try not to get distracted by the big sleeper faced bunker, as a solid shot will find the green and a par will result. Hole 11, 557 yards, par 5 Only the longer hitters can reach this in two. A drive into a valley leaves a lay up shot between two fairway bunkers. The approach to the green looks shorter than it is so trust the yardage and take enough club. Hole 12, 446 yards, par 4 The hardest hole on the course, this long sweeping dogleg to the right gives you the best view of the green for your approach but will play long. The green slopes from back to front and any putt downhill can easily get away.

Hole 13, 153 yards, par 3 A tricky par three that is well bunkered with a small step in the green. The bunkers seem to foreshorten the distance and tempt you to hit less club than you need. Play for the centre and you will have a holeable birdie putt. Hole 14, 434 yards, par 4 A tough tee shot with trees on either side, a slight fade round the corner will give you the best approach. The approach to the green is semi-blind while the green makes par an adequate result. Hole 15, 320 yards, par 4 This is a definite birdie hole that can be driven by the longest hitters. The green is quite generous for a short par but has some subtle breaks, so holding out can leave you scratching your head. www.bbgc.co.uk | 11

Tour the Course Continued Hole 16, 506 yards, par 5 Another opportunity for birdie, this par five requires a decent drive to avoid the fairway bunkers. Beware, there is a small step at the back of the green so putts can be awkward.

Hole 18, 434 yards, par 4 A tough conclusion to the round, this par four is flanked by an out of bounds area all the way down the right and over the back of the green. The front of the green is well guarded by two bunkers, so a par here makes that well earned drink at the bar taste even better.

Hole 17, 189 yards, par 3 The first of two tough holes to finish, this par three is well guarded by five bunkers and has a step running through the middle of the green. Getting a par here is always adequate.

History A public meeting at the Burnham village school in 1891, led to the inauguration of Burnham Beeches Golf Club. The site was located on the edge of the 500 acres of historic woodland that gives the club its name. Some names now legendary in the world of golf are forever linked with Burnham Beeches golf course. Famous golfers to have played the course include the Great Triumvirate of James Braid, John Henry Taylor and Harry Vardon, while David Thomas, Bernhard Langer and Seve Ballesteros also had the pleasure of playing our magnificent course.

14 | www.bbgc.co.uk

Perhaps the best man and women golfers to ever grace the Club over the years were Reychard Hervey de Montmorency and Mrs Evelyn Gavin. Montmorency, an Eton housemaster, played off a handicap of plus four and was captain in 1903 before becoming President of the English Golf Union in 1935. Meanwhile, Gavin joined Burnham Beeches near the start of the 20th century, before moving to America where she was runner-up in the U.S. Women’s Championship three times between 1915 and 1922.

Burnham Beeches’ reputation as a superior golf course was reinforced when the Women’s Professional Tour was held at Burnham in 1984, when the White Horse Whisky Challenge was won by Italian player Federika Dassu. In 2003, Neil Reilly set a professional course record of 64 at the Burnham Beeches Pro-Am, a score that will be tough to match.

The club celebrated its centenary in 1991 and the occasion was marked by a grand fireworks display, a party, a dinner-dance and the publication of Golf Among The Beeches, the hundred-year history of the Club. The final piece of the jigsaw was complete in 2013 when the Club acquired the freehold from Lord Burnham, thus securing it’s future for ever more.

Members’ Golf Members at Burnham Beeches enjoy a full programme of golf throughout the year. There are fixtures against other clubs, together with much competition to be enjoyed alongside fellow members, some for silverware and some of a more social nature.

Men The Men have a full calendar of competitions all through the year with the medals being held on the first Saturday of every month starting from March and running through to October. Through the winter months these are replaced by stablefords.

The main sections in the Club are as follows: In addition, the second Wednesday of every month is a midweek medal and the last Thursday of every month a midweek stableford From April onwards the major trophy competitions take place, starting with the Cliff Day Texas Scramble on Easter Friday followed by the Wright Challenge Cup, Broke Bowl, Police Orphanage Cup and concluding with the Haggard Plate. The latter is open to all the various competition winners through the year and dates back to 1896. 20 | www.bbgc.co.uk

In addition to these, June and July also see the Captain’s Day competition followed by a social evening as well as the Invitation Day and Club Championship which is 36-holes in one day. Singles and Pairs knockouts are also held throughout the summer, which are very competitive but also great fun. For anyone new joining the Club there are also various roll-ups that are a great way to meet fellow members and get a regular game. These are simply gatherings of like-minded members who tend to play at a regular time and day. There is currently a Tuesday and Thursday lunchtime group, a Friday morning roll-up, a minimum of three on a Saturday and a Sunday morning gathering.

Seniors The seniors are a very strong section of the Club, meeting every Monday morning for either fun competitions or qualifying medals and stablefords. They also hold a pairs knock-out as well as a beat your age event. An offshoot of the Seniors also gather on a Wednesday morning for similar good golf and good company. On both days they use the 1st and 10th tees, meaning they can all gather after in the clubhouse for a beer and a sandwich and compare scores.

www.bbgc.co.uk | 21

Members’ Golf Continued Ladies The Ladies meet every Tuesday morning for their main competitions as well as Sunday mornings for the weekend ladies. With over 125 lady members the section is extremely strong and new ladies join in very quickly.

New ladies are able to take advantage of the excellent partner programme where games are found for new joiners each week to ensure they settle into the section. In addition, a ladies roll-up takes place on a Thursday morning and at weekends if there is no competition.

A competition is played every Tuesday throughout the year and their first trophy event, the Hyman Cup, is held in March each year. Ladies Captain’s Day is held in July with a grand tea to follow and their Championship Day is in July. The ladies generally gather every Tuesday after golf for tea and Prizes are awarded monthly.

Juniors At Burnham Beeches Golf Club we are committed to developing junior golf at all levels. Golf is a fantastic sport that instils strong values in youngsters such as honesty, sportsmanship, confidence, pride and respect. Golf is also a very sociable game with ample opportunity for all junior members to meet plenty of new friends.

22 | www.bbgc.co.uk

We do our utmost to ensure all members are welcomed accordingly and are introduced to as many of the other juniors as possible. All of our coaches, staff and junior organisers have the relevant qualifications and training necessary to deal with children in sport as well as holding valid, up-to-date CRB certificates. Currently, junior golf is thriving at Burnham, with the team winning the Chilterns League and Cup in 2012. All junior members can take advantage of free coaching from the Club’s Professionals in the school holidays.

For more details about our Junior Academy Membership, pop into the Pro Shop or call 01628 661448. Societies We are delighted to welcome societies to Burnham Beeches Golf Club and have many groups who visit us every year. We have found that it is best for both societies and members to make Wednesdays to Fridays our societies day, and we offer a variety of options from which societies are welcome to construct their own ‘package’ to meet their needs. While bookings require a minimum of 12 golfers, we are able to accommodate up to 80 golfers in a society and can organise corporate bookings for larger numbers if required. Start your day with a cup of coffee and a bacon roll before taking your pick from our lunch buffet. We would recommend, however, to stay for dinner to see why our kitchen has such an enviable reputation with our delicious choice of one, two or three-course set meals available.

Choose to play 18-holes but bear in mind that our 36-hole package offers exceptional value. As the 9th green is so near to the club house 27 hole packages are also popular. The golf shop provides a comprehensive range of equipment as well as being able to arrange golf lessons and prizes. We can organise longest drive and nearest the pin markers should you wish. Our Winter Packages run from late October to late March, while our Summer Packages transpire from the beginning of April until the third week in October, so come and see why Burnham Beeches provides such an ideal golf day for discerning society golfers. If you would like to discuss special requirements to ensure that the day is exactly what you want, please just contact our office on 01628 661448.

Open Competitions Burnham Beeches is an historic golf club with a rich heritage dating back to the founding of our club in 1891. We know we have something special here and nothing gives us greater pleasure than to share the enjoyment of our magnificent course with people who may not have experienced it before. One of the ways in which we can do this is by staging a number of open competitions spread throughout the season aimed at golfers from all walks of life and all abilities. The season normally starts at the end of June with the highlight of the season, the Men’s Open, which it a 36-hole individual medal competition with a handicap limit of 8.

The month of July sees the Junior Open as well as the Mixed Pairs Open, a 36-hole greensomes stableford. September, meanwhile, sees the penultimate event of the summer, the Ladies’ Open, an 18-hole betterball stableford. The final Open of the season is the Senior Open. An 18-hole individual stableford, played in threeballs, it usually takes place in early October. Events may vary slightly from year to year, but you will find details of upcoming events on our website, www.bbgc.co.uk, together with information about how you can reserve your place.

Practice Facilities One of the often-overlooked criteria in choosing a golf club to belong to is the standard of its practice facilities. While the course is obviously of paramount importance, the game of golf is a never-ending, sometimes frustrating, pursuit of excellence and the only way to improve is by spending time working on the areas of our game that do not meet one’s hopes or expectations. Without the appropriate facilities there is no incentive to get better but at Burnham Beeches members have no such excuse because we have one of the best practice areas anywhere in the county of Buckinghamshire.

The club’s practice facilities are open to anyone who has paid a green fee. For those wishing to work on their short game, there are two chipping greens that mirror the fine surfaces to be found out on the course, giving golfers the opportunity to perfect those round-saving strokes. The long game is not overlooked, either, with a driving range for up to 300-metre drives available to those wishing to acclimatise themselves to how they are actually striking the ball. Top quality range balls are available to hire from the Pro Shop or are free if you are a Member. If you require any other information on our practice facilities, call our Professional Ronnie on 01628 661661.

Custom Fitting There has been a growing realisation in recent times that golfing tuition ought to go hand-in-hand with equipment that allows each player to make the absolute utmost of whatever level of natural talent they possess.

The Pro Shop and Academy is a Mizuno DNA Fitting Centre. Mizuno has developed cutting edge technology that takes shaft-fitting to a whole new level.

Clubs merely bought off the shelf will be of a standard but unfortunately golfers are not, coming in all shapes and sizes.

Specially-created software sifts through the mass of shaft options to select the optimal match, based on Swing DNA recorded by Mizuno’s Shaft Optimizer. This technology can’t be beaten or found by any other brand - Mizuno, the leaders in custom-fitting. Mizuno DNA Fitting: £30 (refunded on sets of irons purchased).

The reality is that a golfer could have a perfectly acceptable technique but still be held back because their clubs are not entirely suitable to their swing. This is where custom fitting comes in, a relatively new phenomenon that allows a set of clubs to be built to marry with each golfer’s individual physique and swing characteristics.

Customising the clubs to position the golfer in the ideal position for their physical characteristics will train the golfer to address the ball with the correct posture and swing along the ideal swing plane, which all adds up to the correct impact position and better scores. www.bbgc.co.uk | 41

The Clubhouse Burnham Beeches’s superbly appointed clubhouse mirrors the quality of the course itself and creates the right atmosphere in which to sample the best in Buckinghamshire hospitality.

If your just looking to relax, the golf course side of our clubhouse offers settees and large sliding windows that provide a pleasant view of the practice putting green, the first tee and the treacherous eighteenth green.

Our delightful old clubhouse has been furnished to provide comfortable and smart surroundings and is a great place to meet after your round of golf and is ideal for casual dining with friends, family or colleagues.

Our clubhouse also contains a snooker room with a full-size table that is very popular with members and may be used by guests playing with a member.

An extensive bar menu offering tasty snacks is served all day from 9.00am, while for those looking for a more substantial meal, the restaurant has a reputation in its own right for filling, wholesome, quality food featuring fresh produce and generous portions.

Our friendly and efficient staff provide first-class customer service and a meticulous attention to detail which will make your visit to Burnham Beeches one you will remember for all the right reasons.

Catering At Burnham Beeches we look to offer a first-class service for members and visitors both on and off the course and our aim is for our guests to have as equally an enjoyable experience in the clubhouse as they do tackling our parkland course. Our chef and his outstanding team have gained a growing reputation for the quality and range of food on the menu. Enjoy a filling breakfast and coffee before taking to the course or come back after your round and tuck into an offering from our extensive menu. We have all the traditional golfer’s favourites menu available from our bar menu, together with a selection of tempting daily offers.

If you are looking for a slightly less sophisticated but equally tasty bar snack, then our bar offers an extensive selection of beers, wines, spirits and a choice of soft drinks. Our catering team are versatile and like challenges, so if you have something a little out of the ordinary in mind for a special function, call us on 01628 661448 to discuss your ideas and we will do everything we can to accommodate them. Catering is available all year round from 9:00am until 5:00pm and longer for those special events.

The club makes good use of the dining facilities and has a special Sunday selection with a Sunday carvery that is always eagerly anticipated. www.bbgc.co.uk | 45
