About the Club Our picturesque course is set in the secluded and scenic Suffolk countryside and despite being just a stones throw from the beautiful town after which the club is named, when you visit our golf club you will feel as if you’re in the middle of nowhere. We are very proud of our club, with two fine golf courses and social facilities to match. We offer a warm welcome to members and guests alike.
As a member-owned club all ‘profits’ get re-invested back into the courses and facilities to ensure that Bury St Edmunds Golf Club is always maintained to a high standard.
Our 18-hole Championship course often hosts regional competitions, by virtue of the test of golf, all year round playability and our commitment to maintaining the high quality of the course.
Our Coaching staff are highly regarded and can teach individually or in groups in structured learning.
Our Greene King nine-hole course enjoys the same high quality and is a popular pay-&-Play facility, used by many members and guests to home their game before hitting to the main course.
We have a thriving ladies section, as well as a Junior Development Programme priced to encourage youngsters to take up the game.
The course offers a challenge for golfers of all ages and abilities. With incredible views from tee to green you can be sure that your surroundings will make up for any rough spots you might find yourself in on the course. After your round of golf, you are welcome to relax in our Lounge. Our well stocked bar and extensive menu are available to you. We are also available for hire for any private parties or functions you wish to host. Our various function rooms provide an excellent venue for birthdays, wedding receptions, wakes and much more.

Club History When the course at Bury St Edmunds was created in 1924, the world was a very different place. Huddersfield Town were the football league champions, Harold Abrahams and Eric Liddell were taking gold for Britain in the ‘Chariots of Fire’ Olympics in Paris. King George V had opened the British Empire Exhibition at the new Wembley stadium, Ramsey MacDonald was the first Labour prime minister. The Thief of Baghdad, with Douglas Fairbanks, was movie of the year and Gershwin’s Rhapsody In Blue the hit song.
The golf course’s original design was by the first British Ryder Cup team captain Ted Ray, winner of an Open and a US Open. It measured 6,087 yards, which was regarded as long for a nonlinks course. Today’s measurement of 6,676 off the white tees is still the second longest in Suffolk
The first pro was Arthur Matthews and a splendid link with the past (for any sport is nothing without its roots) in the form of one of his clubs - an ancient hickory-shafted mid-iron stamped with his name - hangs above the bar, the prize for the annual President’s Mashie competition.
In an era when golf was largely the province of the wealthy aristocratic and professional classes, the club was created with a deliberate policy of being open and available to the townspeople of Bury St Edmunds, with the admirable tagline “No swank and no bunkum”.
Matthews (who earned 50 shillings a week) was also in charge of the clubhouse, which was then lit by oil lamps, for mains electricity was not connected until 1937. He had an assistant, Miss Nellie Baldwin, who was paid 12s 6d a week to provide food and (crikey!) “anything else necessary”.

Club History Continued During World War II the course, like many other sporting venues (racing and football grandstands, for instance, were commonly used as troop billets or hospitals), did its bit. The humps and hollows in the belt of woodland between the 7th and 8th fairways are reminders of an assault course built by the Suffolk Regiment. The ladies’ section held regular competitions to raise money for causes such as the Red Cross.
A wholesale redesign of the course (by noted golf architect Frank Pennick) and a new clubhouse became necessary during the sixties because of the construction of the A14. New holes were built, original ones renumbered - what was the first is now the sixth, for example, and the old sixth now the fourteenth and many greens became multi-tiered. The new-look Bury St Edmunds was formally opened in May 1969
Both courses benefit from ongoing upgrading. Bury St Edmunds not only has a proud history (the competition boards in the newly-refurbished clubhouse stand tribute to significant names in its development) but - in the era of the London Olympics, the Wembley arch and reality TV - an active commitment to its future, and to that of the game.
Another step forward was the construction of a nine-hole course, opened in October 1991 and now a thriving pay-andplay facility, a boon for beginners and casual golfers but no ‘gimme’ for the more experienced player either.

Hole-By-Hole Course Tour 1st A great starting hole, this par 5 is reachable in two for the longest hitters but for most is three shots to the green. The out of bounds right runs the length of the hole but the tightest area is the drive with bunkers on the left to narrow the target, it opens up a little for the 2nd shots. 2nd The green slopes front to back here, be careful with club selection as anything past pin high leaves a tricky putt back down the hill.
3rd Usually with a prevailing following wind this par 5 plays shorter than its yardage, as long as the bunkers are avoided off the tee this is a good scoring opportunity 4th Stroke index 2 this is a strong par 4 which usually leaves a fairway wood or long iron for the 2nd shot often into the wind. Longer hitters favour the right half of the fairway off the tee, or shape the ball left to right.
5th Dogleg right. The sensible play is down the left half of the fairway to open the green up. If you go down the right side be sure to have enough club otherwise you will be blocked out for your approach to the green. 6th A well placed bunker can catch any drive that leaks slightly to the right. The left side of the fairway is safer and gives a better line of approach to a narrow green. Be careful for the dip in front of the green.

Hole-By-Hole Course Tour Continued 7th This fairly straightforward hole is a bit of relief after the last 3, providing a good drive finds the fairway a mid to short iron will be left to the green for most players.
9th This short par 3 provides a scoring good opportunity. The middle of the green is never a bad place to be with a relatively flat putting surface a 2 is always a strong possibility.
11th If laying up to the bunkers off the tee favour the left half of the fairway to give yourself the biggest target, leaving a mid iron downhill approach. Longer hitters may take on the carry aiming over the right hand bunker, to leave a pitch to the green.
8th There is no need to hit a driver here, a fairway wood or long iron off the tee should only leave a mid or short iron to this short par 4 which is protected by a tricky green. Be sure not to go long or left with your approach shot as you will be facing a difficult up and down.
10th Safely negotiating the fairway bunkers leaves an uphill approach shot, so take plenty of club as it all too easy to come up short here.
12th The only blind tee shot on the course, no hidden dangers off the tee, the visible bunker the only hazard except out of bounds way left. The trickier part of this hole is the tiered green that slopes back to front.

Hole-By-Hole Course Tour Continued 13th Bunkers are the visible hazard off the tee on this par 3, however anything long will also roll down off the back bank leaving a longer chip than expected. 14th For most players this par 5 involves a lay up 2nd shot for a short iron 3rd. Longer hitters may take on the green with their 2nd shot, in this case with a long club the target is relatively narrow.
15th The longest par 3 on the course which requires a well struck long iron or fairway wood to find the green. 16th This stroke index 1 hole starts a tough finishing trio of holes. To reach the green in 2 requires 2 long hits to this deep green, the uphill 2nd shot makes seeing the pin position depth impossible so check it on the 13th tee.
17th Another tough par 4 which usually plays into the prevailing wind. The drive should favour the right half of the fairway leaving a fairway wood or long iron for the 2nd shot which could also be a sloping lie. 18th The sloping fairway will kick the ball left towards the well placed fairway bunker so favour the right side off the tee to avoid it. The two tier green is well guarded by bunkers, if laying up with the 2nd shot play down the right side giving a better line into the green with your approach shot.

“Golfer’s Elbow was destroying my quality of life. Traditional methods were having no effect and rest isn’t always possible to factor in. 3 sessions of shockwave transformed everything and the pain had eased as to be unnoticeable with normal service resumed, to date without reoccurrence.”
“I recently saw James Woledge having suffered with Achilles tendonitis for over one year. I had tried other treatments which hadn’t helped. I would highly recommend this treatment but I would say sooner rather than later – don’t leave it as long as I did!”
