Welcome

C

ambridge Meridian Golf Club is so called because it is one of just ten courses in the world to straddle the Greenwich Meridian Line. Just five miles west of the historic and picturesque city of Cambridge, not only is our club situated in a noteworthy geographical location, the course itself has an equally special feel. Set in 212 acres of majestic countryside between the villages of Toft and Comberton, the large expanse of land leaves the player with the luxurious feeling that they are playing millionaire’s golf – in other words that their group has the course to themselves.

Designed by Ryder Cup players Peter Alliss and Clive Clark, Cambridge Meridian opened in 1994 and rapidly gained a reputation as a friendly club that offered golfers a tough but fair test whatever their standard. With its eye-catching striped fairways and perfectly-manicured USGAstandard greens, little wonder our championship course has become a favourite in the East of England.

She and her team can accommodate 80 in the club’s restaurant and are equally adept at catering for golfing societies or for more formal functions such as weddings. Please remember we are dog friendly and you are welcome to bring your best friend to play golf with you, providing they are well behaved.

Come for the golf – and stay for the food. Lizzie’s home-cooked Sunday lunches and the now famous “Cow Pie” have become the stuff of legend.

The Course

A

t 6,700 yards from the white tees and with a par of 73, the course has established itself as a true test to even the most accomplished of players. Frequently used by the PGA and county associations for championships and matches, it has also proudly played host to the English Ladies’ Seniors’ Open Championship on three occasions. The greens are smooth and true in all weathers – a testament to the excellence of their surface is the decision to bring a number of international putting master classes and championships to Cambridge Meridian.

In fact, the excellent drainage and top-notch maintenance means not only is the course always open, but there are never winter mats or temporary greens to contend with. Be it the meandering Bourn Brook or the strategically-situated lakes (or both) that the course plots its way so neatly around, water is in play on two thirds of the holes. But this is far from an unfair challenge, with a good share of wide, welcoming fairways to please those who struggle at times with accuracy off the tee.

There are so many highlights to the round that it is difficult to select a handful, but the three tiers of the 5th green are sure to live long in the memory, while the par-5 18th has been voted the best finishing hole in East Anglia. And if your game happens to suffer an off-day, simply stand back and marvel at the wildlife and countryside around you.

Three holes have dog-legs to tempt the brave soul who regards risk and reward as a part of the game to be embraced.

www.cmgc.co.uk | 7

Take the Course Tour Hole 1 (Sheepshank) 311 yards, par 4 The hole could be named after the knot, or perhaps after the animals that are ready to welcome your ball should it flyout of bounds to the right. Keep your tee shot to the right side of the fairway, too far to the left and you are likely to be blocked out on your approach to the green and face a tricky shot over trees and a stream.

8 | www.cmgc.co.uk

Hole 2 (Church Drift) 365 yards, par 4 A drive favouring the left side of the fairway will negate the couple of craftily-placed bunkers ready to snare any ball that goes too far to the right. A well-placed tee shot will set up a short iron to an undulating green that is guarded by a lake on the left and a vast bunker on the right.

Hole 3 (Watersmeet) 158 yards, par 3 The first of the four par-3s on the course, which you should note all come on the odd holes if you are playing foursomes. The green is a generous size but undulating and slopes to the left and there is a lake to catch anything too far left. Deceptive for distance, trust what it says on the scorecard.

Hole 4 (Hounds Haunch) 529 yards, par 5 A fantastic dog-leg par 5 which will tempt the longer hitters to cut off the corner by carrying the bunkers to leave a second shot over the river and the chance of an eagle putt. The safer route is to keep to the left of centre from the tee, play to the dog-leg and play up to the river. The green is well guarded, with another huge bunker to the right. Make sure you take enough club as long is better than short.

Hole 5 (Barnes Field) 200 yards, par 3 A delightful short hole to look at, but one of the most difficult on the course, with a well-bunkered green. Despite being on three layers, the green is difficult to hit, and can provide some very tricky and never-tobeforgotten putts should you not finish on the same level as the flag.

Hole 6 (Priory Meadow) 526 yards, par 5 A long, uphill, challenging par 5 which needs the right club selection and a little luck to avoid the two fiendishly placed bunkers in the middle of the fairway which are not easily seen from the tee. The green is large and inviting, but watch for some tricky borrows.

www.cmgc.co.uk | 9

Take the Course Tour (CONTINUED) Hole 7 (The Hog’s Back) 389 yards, par 4 One of the most inviting driving holes on the course with the lack of trouble off the tee and the wide fairway. Aim for the marker post and slightly left of centre, which should afford some magnificentviews as you reach the brow of the hill. The second shot appears straightforward, although pay attention to the downhill lie.

10 | www.cmgc.co.uk

Hole 8 (Willow Green) 361 yards, par 4 The water to the left should not come into play off the tee, but check your yardages to make sure you are not caught out by the cross bunker in the centre of the fairway. A drive too far left can leave a second shot blocked out by trees, not a good thing when there is also a stream in front of the green to negotiate.

Hole 9 (Doublecross) 440 yards, par 4 Patience, caution and accuracy are the watch-words on this hole, which has a 90 degree dog-leg to the right. The hole gets its name because you have to traverse the winding Bourn Brook twice, once off the tee and again with the approach into the green. It is possible to cut the corner, but generally the greedier the attempted tee shot, the more costly the results.

Hole 10 (Lord’s Meadow) 500 yards, par 5 If you have not acquainted yourself with the Bourn Brook on the previous hole, there is another chance here, with water crossing the fairway twice and continuing up the left hand side. Keep well right with your second shot, which should leave a short pitch to the green.

Hole 11 (Long Meadow) 300 yards, par 4 Some welcome relief between the stern tests before and after, this is one of the easiest holes on the course and offers a definite birdie chance. The long hitters will fancy going for the green, but more important is to hit the wide fairway and leave a straightforward approach into the green.

Hole 12 (Rotadale) 554 yards, par 5 This used to be Stroke Index 1 and still has claims to be the toughest hole on the course, particularly from the back tees. Ladies and those playing from the yellow tees should look to carry lake on the corner of the dog-leg without over-clubbing and finding the bunkers on the far side of the fairway. Another lake runs down the left and with trees on the right, accuracy is at a premium.

www.cmgc.co.uk | 11

Take the Course Tour (CONTINUED) Hole 13 (Greenwich Green) 369 yards, par 4 Drive up the right side of the fairway to avoid the lake which cuts into the fairway on the other side. There is a ditch to cross in front of the green, but this should not pose too many problem proving your tee shot finds the short grass.

12 | www.cmgc.co.uk

Hole 14 (The Meridian Line) 413 yards, par 4 A long, testing par 4 that offers a challenge from the tee with water in play down the lefthand side and a trio of bunkers ready to end any hope of reaching the green in regulation down the right. Choose enough club with your second shot to attack the green, which is slightly uphill.

Hole 15 (Cundells Green) 214 yards, par 3 At nearly 200 yards even off the yellow tips, this is a hole which requires a long iron or a fairway wood to reach the putting surface, which is long and narrow. Even those hitting long and straight enough to hit the green are not guaranteed to exit with their par.

Hole 16 (Bunker Hill) 415 yards, par 4 The toughest hole on the course, with a host of sand traps and two long uphill shots required to reach the raised, undulating green. If the bunkers or the distance doesn’t get you, the green might, as downhill putts can be wickedly fast, especially in the summer months.

Hole 17 (Hill Field) 162 yards, par 3 It may be the shortest hole on the course off the yellow tees, but it is still one to treat with respect. A nice hole to look at as long as you don’t have a fear of water, which must be carried off the tee. The green is long and thin and the pin position can mean a difference of up to three clubs.

Hole 18 (Westward Home) 526 yards, par 5 A stunning test to end the round with a par-5 that has been voted the best finishing hole in East Anglia. The first lake must be carried to shorten the distance into the green but that is not even half the job done as trouble abounds. Fairway bunkers, a stream short of the green and more water to the left, this hole has just about everything, including an audience watching your every move from the clubhouse terrace.

Practice Facilities

C

ambridge Meridian Golf Club is committed to offering its members all the facilities possible to enable them to become as proficient at this great game of golf as their talent and application allows. As well as the highly-regarded tuition on offer from our head professional Mike Snow, there are several areas where players can work on ingraining new swing thoughts or turning previously weaker areas of their game into strengths.

Just a short walk from the Clubhouse is our newly built driving range. 8 fully covered bays, where you can practice with every club in the bag, right up to and including the driver.

On the practice ground there is a pitching green to enable work on improving the short game. This has a bunker next to it as well for those who wish to perfect their sand-save technique.

At the range we also offer practice from turf giving that true feeling when refining your strike.

In addition, there is a large putting green at the entrance of the club along with a chipping green and two practice nets which are ideal for warming up before taking to the course.

Membership

I

f you find appealing the thought of belonging to a warm, friendly club that offers year-round golf on a perfectly-maintained course and excellent facilities off it, then why not consider becoming a member? There are a number of memberships available, including seven-day and five-day, with special rates for students, juniors, partners joining at the same time and for those only wishing to play after 2pm.

20 | www.cmgc.co.uk

Joining the club offers you the chance not only to make new friends but to test your mettle in regular competitions both at weekends and during the week whether you are male or female, a senior golfer with a lifetime’s experience or a youngster just taking up the game.

Benefits of being a member include: • a loyalty card which entitles the holder to a 10 per cent discount on drinks and food for use in the clubhouse • earliest advance opportunity to make tee bookings • members-only tee times before 10am at the weekend • reduced rates for members’ guests and offers throughout the year. • on line tee bookings

As well as enjoying all Cambridge Meridian has to offer, there are also several ‘away’ days and weekends throughout the year, whereby some of the members get together and play a different course and sometimes make a weekend of it. Any sporting organisation that does not recognise that young people are its future lifeblood is short-sighted in the extreme and it is no surprise that juniors are embraced at a forward-thinking, progressive club like Cambridge Meridian.

The youth section is positively thriving thanks to the enthusiasm, dedication and time invested in it by our professional Mike Snow. Corporate Membership is also available and has proved extremely popular with local companies of all sizes because of the great value it represents.

If you would like to find out more about becoming a member of our friendly club, give either Steve Creighton or Cathy O’Connor a call on 01223 264700 or email us at meridian@golfsocieties.com

Directors and staff are able to play the course all year round and enjoy the bar and restaurant facilities as any other member of the club would.

Playing Categories Men The Men’s Membership Section is very successful and is continuously growing, mainly due to the excellent all-year round condition of the course along with the busy diary of competitions and welcoming, friendly atmosphere among the current members. Whether you’re a golfer looking to further your game or simply play and get involved in the section, you will enjoy your time here at Cambridge Meridian.

24 | www.cmgc.co.uk

With a season full of weekend and midweek competitions, friendly and scratch matches there is plenty of competitive and social golf available to play and get involved in. There is also a weekly ‘Swindle’ amongst the members played every weekend in a relaxed friendly format. Although playing golf on a quality Championship course is the main reason golfers choose to have their membership with us, there are also an array of social events, such as a monthly quiz, race nights and themed events which give added value and enjoyment to being a member here.

Other benefits of membership include a loyalty card, giving 10 per cent discount on drinks and food for use in the clubhouse, advanced tee bookings, members-only tee times before 10am at the weekend, reduced members’ guest rates and frequent special offers. There are also several ‘away’ days and weekends throughout the year, whereby some of the members get together and play a different course, sometimes making a weekend out of it. One of the great things about the Men’s section is the friendly and relaxed atmosphere both on

the golf course and in the clubhouse, which means you can be sure that you will enjoy a membership at Cambridge Meridian. Seniors The Seniors Section at Cambridge Meridian Golf Club was formed in 2003. From the very modest beginnings it has grown strongly to involve more than 50 members and has a full and interesting calendar of competitions, matches and social events.

The section is now organised through an annually elected Committee to manage and develop the increased numbers and activities of the Senior players. Being a member of the Seniors section here at Cambridge Meridian is certainly a thoroughly enjoyable way to play your midweek golf. The section play regularly every Tuesday and Thursday from 7.45am with Medal, Stableford and social golf being played throughout the year, as well as fun and unusual formats, especially on a Thursday.

Open to both men and women you couldn’t ask for a better atmosphere or group to be involved with. Along with the Tuesday and Thursday meets, we also play 20 friendly matches against other local Seniors sections, giving the opportunity to not only meet and socialise with members from other Clubs, but also play a few courses that you may not already have played.

Open Competitions

C

ambridge Meridian is proud to offer its members a truly outstanding 18-hole layout on which to play their golf, but feel that it is such a magnificent venue and wonderful test that others should also be given the opportunity to enjoy it. To that end, we host a selection of open competitions and invitation events which, as their name suggests, can be entered by all-comers. The first Wednesday in August sees the Seniors Open, a fourball betterball Stableford event for golfers aged 55 and over.

On the second Wednesday in August it is the turn of the Ladies Open, which again features a Stableford format but this time with teams of three. On the Sunday of that same week there is a fourball betterball Mixed Open Stableford event, while the Junior Open, also held in summer, sees some of the area’s best junior golfers display their talents on our championship course. The year’s most prestigious event is the English Ladies Senior International Open towards the end of August. First played at Cambridge Meridian in 2009, it features three days of outstanding golf in a 54-hole scratch medal championship with a £1,000 prize

on offer to the leading professional. This is always such a friendly event and has drawn golfers from as far afield as the United States and Canada. March sees a new Open Competition. ‘The Greene King Society Team of the Year’ This was very successful last year. For more information please see the website www.cmgc.co.uk There is a Sunday Roll Up now also which is available for anyone from visitors to members to play 9 holes, from 1pm. Details of all these events can be found on our website.

Social Activities

ith excellent facilities and a sociable, friendly group of members, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the off-course benefitsof being a member at Cambridge Meridian Golf Club. The club has an active social calendar that features popular events such as our wellattended quiz nights.

As you might expect, with having a Championship course at our disposal, much of the social activity revolves around the golf, with sociable Texas scramble and Turkey trot events inked into the calendar. One of the big events of the year is the Christmas Cracker, when members play a round of golf before everyone returns to the clubhouse for Christmas dinner and the club’s presentation night.

Our excellent caterer, Lizzie, has a reputation for producing finefood, so dining is also high on the agenda of our favourite pastimes! The club has seen steaks nights, Chinese nights, and hopes to host many more themed food evenings in the future. Our excellent Sunday lunches are not to be missed and offer another chance for members to meet in the relaxed, friendly family atmosphere which we look to foster here at Cambridge Meridian.
