Welcome There are many reasons which will attract members and visitors to Chestfield. Not least, it boasts a course that is an excellent test of golf with its undulating fairways and greens, extensive tree-planting programme, coupled with magnificent views, all set in countryside worthy of a place in the Garden of England. Well known for its excellent cuisine and exceptional
hospitality, Chestfield also boasts the ‘oldest building in the world being used as a clubhouse’. It dates back to the 15th century and is the heart of the golf club. There are few clubs as warm and welcoming as that of Chestfield. Join us for the day, or longer, and enjoy a round of golf in an attractive part of the Kent countryside with a warm welcome in the clubhouse from our members and staff.

History The county of Kent is perhaps the most fortunate in southern England in the variety and quality of its golf courses. Chestfield, with its historic connections and attractive layout and its reputation for a warm friendly welcome, is well worth a visit. Chestfield Manor is mentioned in the Domesday Book as a gift of William the Conqueror to his half brother Bishop Odo. It lies on the route taken by pilgrims to the shrine of Thomas Becket and was known even then as a place of rest and hospitality. In that respect, little has changed to this day. The present building dates from the 15th century and has been carefully and lovingly restored to provide an attractive beamed lounge bar, a small but cosy Spike Bar and a restaurant overlooking the 18th green and fairway.

The thatched timber cowsheds to the south now house the thriving junior section and the administrative offices. A purpose-built modern changing room and a well-stocked professional’s shop have been tastefully added. The course itself is, not surprisingly, of more recent vintage. Its location in the triangle of land formed by the coastal resorts of Whitstable and Herne Bay and the cathedral city of Canterbury affords wonderful views over the Thames Estuary and the Swale. Construction of the course, originally known as Shrub Hill, began shortly after the First World War at the instigation of George Reeves, a local builder. He commissioned two well-known professionals, James Braid – five times Open Champion – and Abe Mitchell to design the course which
was opened for play on 16th April 1924. Some of Abe Mitchell’s clubs are still on display in the clubhouse. In 1938, the club was purchased by millionaire ship owner Jack Billmeir, a local boy. When he died in 1963, the course and buildings were acquired by the members. Since then, the course has improved beyond recognition, culminating in the club hosting the Kent County Championship in 1993, when it was won by a local member, Graham Brown, and more recently the Kent County Junior Championship in 2007. Changes have been made to the original design over
the years with the most recent arising from the rerouting of the A299 Thanet Way. The road was channelled through a purpose-built cut-and-cover tunnel, 400 metres in length. The new layout, designed by the internationally renowned golf architect Donald Steel and comprising six new greens, was opened in June 2000. It is generally agreed that the improved layout, which has an SSS of 70 for men and 72 for ladies, is an excellent test of golf. It retains the historic character of Chestfield, undulating fairways and greens and magnificent views, while incorporating modern design features and materials.

The Course At Chestfield you are afforded an excellent round of golf, matched only by the clubhouse hospitality. The course suits golfers of all abilities but with it being a hilly course, will challenge even the most seasoned of golfers. The course is easily walkable but for those wanting to reserve energy, buggies are available for hire. The most attractive part of the course is undoubtedly the area comprising the first and eighteenth holes, set in the centre of the village near the Oast House.
The most testing part of the course lies on Shrub Hill overlooking the sea, where golfers will find much to interest and challenge them, not least the new 553-yard second hole. Other less demanding holes are more subtle in character and offer substantial rewards to the more cautious golfer. For more detailed course information take the course tour on the following pages.

Take the Course Tour Plan ahead for your visit to Chestfield and make the most of your round with our course map and hole descriptions. You can also read the helpful tips from our Head Professional David Ledingham. Hole 1, 381 yards, par 4 A reasonably gentle opener but with a few teeth. Be aware of the small pond to the right and, in the summer, of driving through the fairway. If you can find the centre of the fairway then you have a relatively simple mid iron into a flat green.
Hole 2, 552 yards, par 5 A monster off the back tee, particularly into the wind. Loads of trouble off the tee so your best is needed. Think about a shorter club off the tee, especially if you won’t reach. Be aware of the very long green. You will need more than you think to get back to the flag – and don’t miss right! Hole 3, 390 yards, par 4 Another difficult hole. A draw off the tee is ideal but otherwise aim left as the fairway will throw your ball down to the right rough. The green can be hard to find and again plays a bit longer than you think. Make sure you’re up or the front bunker will get you!
www.chestfield-golfclub.co.uk | 11
Take the Course Tour Continued Hole 4, 148 yards, par 3 Only short but never easy playing uphill. Play for the centre of the green and this time don’t go left! Don’t miss the amazing views from the green!
Hole 6, 378 yards, par 4 Drive as close to the left as you dare as the fairway throws everything hard right. Be aware of the bunker to the left of the green as it is invisible from the fairway.
Hole 5, 414 yards, par 4 Great hole. A little cut off the tee is ideal as the fairway runs everything to the left. Then the fun starts. A two-tier green with slopes front left and back and a deep bunker left means your approach needs to be good.
Hole 7, 389 yards, par 4 This hole is why you bought a course guide! A sharp dog leg right means either a hard cut off the tee or a straight midiron to hold a fairway sloping away from you. Beware the internal out of bounds to the right! Then beware a severely sloping green from right to left that will catch out most with long putts. A par here is excellent.
12 | www.chestfield-golfclub.co.uk
Hole 8, 249 yards, par 3 No, it’s not a par 4! Difficult at the best of times as it’s always a long club. If you go right into the trees then you are probably reloading so your best is needed! Hole 9, 282 yards par 4 A little relief now! Driveable for the big hitters but still not easy as the green is tiny and has bunkers short and right. A definite birdie opportunity.
Hole 10, 327 yards par 4 As the 9th, but with a few more problems. Big hitters can get there but the ditch left and right can catch you. Lay-ups need to be short enough to go over the trees left and right in case you are slightly wayward. Hole 11, 476 yards par 5 Play it straight and the length is not a problem. A definitely reachable par 5. Still some trouble if you are wayward but this is one to go for.
www.chestfield-golfclub.co.uk | 13
Take the Course Tour Continued Hole 12, 164 yards par 3 A strong par 3. An elevated green means you can easily run off. It is also longer than you think and getting back is difficult. A solid shot for the centre is a sound play. The halfway (two-thirds?) house may help if this one gets you! Hole 13, 410 yards, par 4 Out of bounds right and trouble left – be straight! An easy second awaits but make sure you find the fairway.
14 | www.chestfield-golfclub.co.uk
Hole 14, 401 yards, par 4 A tough hole. Uphill all the way and then a treacherous green that slopes hard from back to front. Try not to go past the flag – you’ll find out why. Hole 15, 387 yards, par 4 A huge drop to the fairway makes this tee shot very inviting but don’t lose it right. Approach shots are tricky as the distance is deceptive and the green slopes hard from right to left. Again, enjoy the views from the tee out to the wind farm. Believe it or not they are eight miles away!
Hole 16, 168 yards par 3 Not long but the green is surrounded by sand. Beware the green which slopes from right to left. Hole 17, 384 yards, par 4 Plenty of trouble if you go wide from the tee but try to keep to the left side. An accurate tee shot leaves a difficult uphill second to a multi-tiered green with deep sand to the right. Not long but a strong hole.
Hole 18, 355 yards, par 4 A reasonably friendly short par 4 welcomes you back to the clubhouse. A good drive up the right-hand side, or over the bunker for the longer hitters, will leave a short approach to the relatively flat green. Try not to bomb the veranda behind though!

The Clubhouse The Chestfield clubhouse, which dates back to the 15th century, is reputed to be the oldest building in the world being used for this specific purpose. Although steeped in tradition and still with many of its original features, the clubhouse boasts modern additions such as well-appointed locker and changing rooms and Pro Shop. The club is well known for the excellent cuisine available, whether it is a light snack in the bar or a delicious meal in the restaurant overlooking the 18th green, which is undoubtedly
one of the most attractive parts of the course. The Spike Bar is well stocked with a wide selection of beers, wines, and spirits and soft drinks. Catering The catering here at Chestfield is held in as high a regard as the golf thanks to Gary Jefferies of Supreme Cuisine. Gary is a graduate of The Royal Naval School of Cookery and has more than 25 years’ experience in the catering industry. Having served for nine years in the Royal Navy, travelling around most of the world, experiencing different cultures, methods of cookery and using an exotic variety of ingredients, he decided it was time to settle on dry land. He spent the next 19 years at The King’s School, Canterbury, as Head Chef and then Executive Head Chef. Here Gary orchestrated the day-to-day catering for one of the most prestigious schools in England and also produced quality
cuisine for events and functions ranging from small private dinner parties and weddings to corporate entertaining including banquets for Heads of State, royalty and celebrities. Gary has been at Chestfield Golf Club since 2011 and not only provides day to day bar snacks but has also catered the club’s events with tremendous success. Golf Professional Sara Alton and husband Mick, a member, were thrilled with the catering Gary provided for their wedding. They said: “Our wedding food by Gary was absolutely perfect. The food was beautifully presented and on time and full of flavour and colour... we were so happy with him and his staff... he is a credit to Chestfield Golf Club.”

Junior Academy Chestfield has introduced scores of youngsters to the game of golf in recent years thanks to our successful Junior Academy. Run by our dedicated team of PGA-qualified professionals, the Academy runs a ‘roll-up’ group lesson for young beginners on a Saturday morning from 10am to 11am. Ages range between 5 and 13 and all are very welcome. More advanced programmes are made available to these juniors as they progress. This gives them a good grounding in technique and course management and, just as importantly,
an understanding of the etiquette of golf and the rules of the game. Learning sound fundamentals at such an early age means years of frustration later in life can be avoided! Each child receives a folder and certificates as they pass each section which really drives them on. There are also courses during holidays that give youngsters even more time to improve. If you have any questions or would like to book please call the Pro Shop on 01227 793563
