WELCOME Chislehurst Golf Club, founded in 1894, has an 18 hole course situated within 70 acres of beautiful parkland in the heart of Chislehurst, only 11 miles south east of Central London.
The jewel in Chislehurst Golf Club’s crown is its magnificent Clubhouse, Camden Place, which was built around 1717 and was, for a while during the 1870s, the home of Napoleon III, Empress Eugenie and their son, the Prince Imperial.
The course is a truly demanding test of accuracy rather than length, and will challenge golfers of all abilities, consistent with the design influences of the great Harry S Colt. It possesses a charm quite distinctively its own.
The Clubhouse has four function rooms and three bars to accommodate golfers and more formal occasions alike and is available, by arrangement, for various visiting functions including wedding receptions and parties.
www.chislehurstgolfclub.co.uk | 5
THE COURSE The Rt Hon AJ Balfour formally opened the course on 21st July 1894, although only the present 7th (then the 5th) now remains. The present layout is attributed to the legendary course designer Harry S Colt, adding his signature to the design of Easton Devonshire who drove himself in as the Club’s seventh Captain on 1 June 1900. Other than the redesign of ‘the pit’ on the 7th, there has been little significant alteration since. With an overall area of less than 70 acres, space is at a premium so accuracy has always been more important than distance from the tee.
6 | www.chislehurstgolfclub.co.uk
At 5,095 yards for the Men, the course is clearly short but a SSS of 66 gives nothing away. This is clearly recognised when considering that the amateur course record of 62 for a medal round, set in 1938 by OJ Llewellyn, remained for more than fifty years before being broken by JD Murray who carded a 61 in 1993. This record was equalled in 2009 by current member Graham Kerr before being beaten in 2012 when Freddie Price shot 60 in the Kent Junior Championship hosted by the Club.
The excellent greens are demanding and are certainly not flat, as befitting a course designed by Colt. Tight tree-lined fairways and, at times, awkward sloping lies simply add to the challenge. Any two of the eight ‘short’ holes can together demolish the highest of hopes at any one time. Chislehurst has once again returned to the list of host venues for county fixtures, showing true recognition of the test that awaits even the best golfers here at Chislehurst.
At 4,742 yards (SSS 69) the Ladies’ course might be judged a harder test than the Men’s. The Ladies’ course record was also long-established, standing at 67 set by Jan Gibson in 1985. This was improved by one shot in 2009 by former member and past Kent Junior Captain, Lucy Matthews. First registered with the LGU in 1899, the Ladies’ section maintains a full fixture list and partakes regularly each year in county competitions. Over a period of seventy years we have hosted many county matches and three Kent Championships.

HISTORY Chislehurst Golf Club was established on Saturday 26 May 1894, in Camden Place, at a meeting of distinguished local residents headed by Alexander Travers Hawes. William Willett, a well-known builder, had bought the mansion and 124 acre park in 1890 with the intention of creating an estate of up to 300 small houses with ready access to the newly improved railway connection to London. He was now prepared to restrict himself to building fewer, larger houses on the two outer fringes of the park and make over the mansion and the central area to the creation of a golf course. Conveniently placed for the church and the common, Camden Place had always been central to the social life of Chislehurst. During the 1870s Queen Victoria featured among a succession of distinguished visitors to the exiled French Imperial Family -
Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie -who, for that decade, were tenants of its then owner Nathaniel Strode. The Club made no distinction between playing and nonplaying members and many ladies joined for the social side alone. The large rooms were well suited for dinners and dances. Much bridge was played and Napoleon III’s billiard room continued in frequent use. More than a century later, the bridge meetings are still popular. Snooker is now preferred to billiards and the Club hosts a variety of evening functions and events throughout the year. We invite you to experience the wonders of over three centuries of hospitality.

TAKE THE COURSE TOUR Hole 1 - Golfers playing the 18th will be playing to the Green next to the 1st Tee: be aware. Halfway down the fairway is a water hazard (large pond). Before you reach this pond, you may encounter golfers crossing from your left (they have right of way as on a higher hole.) Once you reach the crossover, you are aiming for the left green. Lateral water hazard to the far left hand side of the hole as you approach the green. Do not play your shot if golfers are on the right hand green. Exit Green back right to 2nd Tee via path. Hole 2 - Be aware of golfers playing down the 6th Hole fairway, which is adjacent to your fairway; calls of “fore” may be heard. Water hazard to left and right of hole approximately half way down the hole. Use caution when playing your second shot to the green, which is adjacent to the 6th Tee, a wayward shot to the right must result in a
10 | www.chislehurstgolfclub.co.uk
shout of fore. Courtesy should be shown when putting out to players on the 6th Tee. Hole 3 - Water hazard to right of the fairway; lateral water hazard and out of bounds to the left. Tee shots going right of the green are heading for the 4th tee and a shout of “fore” is mandatory. Hole 4 - Water hazard to the right of the fairway; lateral water hazard just beyond the tee. Bunker in middle of fairway which can make for a tricky second shot. Any wayward shot to the right must be followed by a shout of “fore” to alert players on the 2nd Green and 3rd tee. Exit green to the right. Hole 5 - For reasons of safety, do not tee off this tee whilst players in front of you are making their tee shots from the 6th tee. Use discretion here as there are two tees and two greens in close proximity.
Hole 6 - Be aware of players using the 2nd fairway; a wayward shot to the right would warrant a call of “fore”. Second shot to the green will be partially blind: make sure the green is clear before playing your shot. Both 2nd Tee and 1st green are adjacent to this green. Exit green using pathway at the back of the 1st green to 7th tee. Do not cut across in front of this green, as you may be hit by a ball being played to the 1st tee. Hole 7 - Be aware of players putting out on 1st green. As you are playing the higher numbered hole you have priority, however, common sense should prevail allowing players to complete their stroke. Exit tee front left up the slope to the green, exit back of green to 8th Tee. Hole 8 - You may encounter players in front of you. They will be crossing from your right playing the 14th hole, also,
players from your left playing 11th hole. All players in front of you have priority as they are playing the higher numbered hole. The ladies’ 14th tee is immediately in front of you; never tee off when the ladies are playing their tee shots. Exit green back left through the copse. Hole 9 - Out of bounds all the way up the right-hand side of the fairway to the green. The green is near the 10th green, be prepared to shout “fore” if your shot is wayward left. Exit back left of green through the copse to the 10th tee. Hole 10 - Be aware of players approaching or playing on the 14th green, use discretion when teeing off and be prepared to shout “fore” if your shot is wayward right. Exit back of green through copse to the 11th tee.
www.chislehurstgolfclub.co.uk | 11
TAKE THE COURSE TOUR continued Hole 11 - Extra care must be taken here: players will be crossing from your right as they play their second shot to the 8th tee and will probably be blind to you. Players playing the 14th will be advancing forward to your right. The 11th green will not be visible to some golfers playing the second shot, so a scout should be sent forward to make sure the green is clear. You may find it easier to leave your bag next to the 12th tee by the big oak tree rather than take it down the hill to the green but this is at your own risk. Exit green front right by reversing up the pathway through the copse to the right hand of the fairway. It is dangerous to walk back up the fairway itself. Hole 12 - Be courteous of golfers teeing off on the 14th through the bushes to your right as your voice may carry. Exit right off the green to the 13th tee.
12 | www.chislehurstgolfclub.co.uk
Hole 13 - Green is partially blind, make sure Green is clear before teeing off. If there is a game directly in front of you, they should ring the bell when they clear the green. Exit right of green via pathway through the copse to 14th tee. Be sure to ring the bell to inform games behind and around you that you are clearing the green. Hole 14 - Be aware of players crossing from the left as they play the 8th hole. You have priority, however, common sense should be used. Before playing your second shot, send forward a scout to the top of the hill to make sure it’s safe to proceed. When making your approach shots to the green, make sure the players teeing off the 15th are not in danger. Leave bags by the 15th tee and not in front of the green when you are putting. Hole 15 - Make sure the fairway is clear before teeing off as players ahead of you may still be searching for balls in the dip.
Be prepared to shout “fore if you play a wayward shot to the right or the left. Lateral water hazards to the right hand of the fairway and just before the green, again on the right-hand side. Before making your approach shots to this green, be aware of players on the 16th tee which is just behind the 15th green. Hole 16 - Lateral water hazard in front of tees. Players may be crossing your fairway from your right as they play down the 1st hole; you have priority. Some drives may not be long enough for you to see the green so double check the green is clear before taking your approach shot. Players standing on the 17th Tee, which is to the right of the 16th green, is an indication that the green may be clear.
Hole 18 - No real problems here, although out of bounds all the way up the left-hand side of the fairway and behind the green. Be aware of players teeing off from the 1st tee coming towards you as they progress down the 1st hold. The 1st Tee is adjacent to the 18th green so be careful with your approach shot. You have priority but again, common sense should prevail, especially if you are finishing a friendly round and a match is about to go off the 1st tee. Exit back left of the green to the shoe cleaning area and the Pro Shop.
Hole 17 - Out of bounds all the way up the left to the green. Exit right through the trees to the 18th tee.

BECOMING A MEMBER There can be no greater appeal than that of becoming a member of an historic golf club with a clubhouse literally fit for royalty but without the requirement to pay a King’s ransom for the privilege. With a friendly, welcoming membership, a full golfing diary and a lively and varied social calendar Chislehurst Golf Club is certainly the club for you.
We currently have a limited number of vacancies in the playing and social member categories. Applicants are required to submit an application form prior to the formality of attending a brief meeting with the Captain, Lady Captain and General Manager at which all applicants have the opportunity of establishing exactly what they are seeking from membership of the Club. Once playing members are on board, unless they have transferred an existing handicap from a previous club, they are simply required to submit three cards signed by another member or a player with a recognised CONGU handicap in order to attain a handicap which then entitles play in all competitions.
16 | www.chislehurstgolfclub.co.uk
In addition to a subscription an entrance fee is payable which goes towards helping the Club to maintain the expected high standards for which we are renowned. Annual subscriptions and any entrance fees for new members can be paid direct into the Club’s account or by instalments should the member so wish. The Club offers attractive rates across all playing categories, from the Veterans to Full and Five Day to Intermediate through to the Juniors, as well as to social members and the application process could not be simpler.
For full details contact the General Manager in writing to the Club, via e-mail to thegm@chislehurstgolfclub.co.uk or by phone on 020 8467 2782.

MEMBERSHIP Chislehurst Golf Club is a traditional Members’ Club and welcomes enquiries from all applicants seeking golfing or social membership. Golfing membership embraces both Full and Five Day categories, and we currently have limited availability in both. Temporary Membership may be offered to those moving into the area unable to find sponsors for their membership applications and to enable them to play, and get to know, other members. Member Benefits Both the Men’s and Ladies’ sections have full golfing calendars for social and competitive golf. There are plenty of mixed competitions which are well supported. The men have a “turn up and play” roll-up four ball system on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday mornings specifically to enable members to vary their golfing partnerships and meet other members. The Ladies’ and Academy sections have their own roll-ups and
Whatsapp groups. We have no need for, and consequently do not operate, any system of reserved tee-off times for social golf. Chislehurst Golf Club is ‘one club’, with both our men and our ladies enjoying full playing rights. The Club is now a member of the Association of James Braid Courses. The benefits of subscribing to the Association include members being able to play at all other clubs within the Association for a reduced green fee, subject to tee time availability, thereby hopefully increasing the awareness of Braid’s work and, of course, the man himself. There is no cost to subscribe to the Association. Full details can be found on the James Braid Association page within the Members’ Area on our website. The Club also enjoys reciprocal arrangements with other clubs at different times throughout the year.

OUR ROOMS Dining Room The Eugenie Room has a wonderful atmosphere. It is a visually stunning room enhanced by its 18th Century oak paneling, which was rescued from Chateau de Bercy, a former hunting lodge of Louis XIII. As such, the room brings the formality and pomp desired to truly mark a particularly important event or occasion. This, our largest and grandest room, can accommodate up to 76 guests on round tables or 100 on a straight table format. Other table configurations are possible for smaller parties.
Oval Room Our Oval Room dates back to 1780, and was originally the main entrance to the house. This magnificent room is both unusual in its shape and noteworthy because of its decoration. A series of floor to ceiling wall painting in Dutch style depict a lavish lifestyle and combined with the French doors which open to the grounds, give it a spacious, yet friendly, feel. An added advantage with its room is that it can be opened up into the Imperial Lounge for those larger events, or is the perfect choice for a small reception or celebration.

Club Room The Louis Room is our smallest room, with its original ornate plaster ceiling dating back to the 18th century, and is attributed to Edward ‘Athenian’ Stewart. The Louis Room is ideal for a more intimate wedding ceremony or small private gathering.

SOCIAL EVENTS Our very enthusiastic Social Committee organises regular functions throughout the year offering mixed entertainment, well supported by a wide section of the membership. At most events members are encouraged to bring guests, plus there is also a monthly Club Night, encouraging members to get together informally. Our Bridge Club meets regularly, both during the day and for supper/bridge evenings.
Chislehurst Golf Club regularly welcomes bands and vocalists with recent events ranging from Rat Pack to pop and soul. Each year we hold our Summer Ball, where members and non-members alike can enjoy an evening of music and dancing. Children regularly have fun at our annual Children’s Christmas Party and adults can let their hair down at the New Year’s Eve Dinner & Dance. Regular events include our Burns Night Supper and Summer Ball, normally attended by over two hundred, and in early March members are invited to our Captains’ Party ahead of the annual Ladies’ and Men’s Dinners... the fun never stops here at Chislehurst Golf Club!
