Originally established in 1902 and relocated to Ullenwood over 40 years ago, the treelined course has matured beautifully ensuring breath-taking views and a fun yet challenging game. Cotswold Hills is widely regarded as one of the best courses in the county and has proudly hosted a number of prestigious tournaments throughout the years including the English Ladies Amateur Championship and the Mens County Championship.

Club History
O
rganised golf has been played on Cleeve Hill since 1891 when the elite Cheltenham Golf Club was formed.
The first course was set out on the Common, with wonderful views from the highest point and overlooking Prestbury Park, home today to the world-famous National Hunt Gold Cup. With its natural terrain, the Common provided golf more reminiscent of a links course than the inland setting of Cheltenham.
Since then there have been several successive courses, the latest one being the municipal Cleeve Hill Golf Course, home of the Cleeve Cloud Golf Club. The Cheltenham Town Golf Club (as distinct from the Cheltenham Golf Club) was officially founded in 1902 and two years later changed its name to Cotswold Hills Golf Club.

Club History The two clubs, Cheltenham and Cotswold Hills, shared the same course on Cleeve for over thirty years. In addition, an Artisans’ club was formed in 1933 and its members, too, played on the Cleeve Hill course. The Cheltenham Golf Club closed in 1935 and many of its members joined Cotswold Hills. Although Cotswold Hills stayed on Cleve Hill for around 75 years, it was never really comfortable with its site on the Common. Continual problems with both the sheep and the public, together
with regular conflict with the Board of Conservators over the amount of rent paid to play golf on the Common, eventually convinced the Club that it was time to take control over its own affairs. In the early 1970s a local farmer offered to sell the Club some of his farmland at Ullenwood, on the southern edge of Cheltenham. It had the potential for the creation of an 18-hole golf course and,

with its limestone base, it would drain naturally and be playable for twelve months of the year. Following an extraordinarily brave decision by its members, and with the support of an enthusiastic army of volunteers, a new golf course was created on 157 acres of land, and a clubhouse built.

The Course
S
et within mixed woodland high above the rolling hills of the Cotswolds beyond, the 6,800 yard Championship golf course is considered one of the finest in Gloucestershire.
Designed by Club member and scratch golfer Morris Little and constructed in 1976, the course has matured into a true test of golf. In past years it has been the venue for the English Ladies Amateur Championship, the Mens and Ladies County Championships and, most recently, the England Golf Boys U18 County Finals.
We are proud of our exceptional attention to detail and we invite you to pit your wits against our quality greens. Each hole at Cotswold Hills Golf Club features five tee positions to suit all golfers and whilst the course layout demands respect, you will be rewarded with a thoroughly enjoyable game of golf.

HOLE 2
The Course Tour Hole 1 – Par 4, Yards 369, Stroke Index 9 An opening gentle par 4 will need your attention to detail. An initial wood should aim to keep you on the crest of the valley, leaving you a short iron into a sloping green guarded by a deep bunker on the left. A short second shot into the green will be punished by the slope of the apron.

Hole 2 – Par 4, Yards 359, Stroke Index 13 Another deceptively gentle par 4 will require an accurate tee shot down the left-hand side of the sloping fairway if you are to avoid running into the rough on the right. Accuracy will be rewarded by a short to mid iron to the two-tier green, the lower level of which can be a challenge.
Hole 3 – Par 4, Yards 427, Stroke Index 3 A long but beautiful par 4 which plays very long if the wind is not in your favour. As with the previous hole an accurate drive down the left-hand side of the fairway will keep your ball in the middle left of the fairway and open the green. An accurate approach is required as bunkers guard both left and right of the relatively deep green.
HOLE 3
Hole 4 – Par 3, Yards 175, Stroke Index 15 This is a lovely mid-range par 3 that requires an accurate tee shot. The green is relatively flat but has some gentle borrows to make life interesting.
Hole 5 – Par 5, Yards 570, Stroke Index 1 Your first par 5 is an excellent test of your ability. A straight drive will see you over the left hand bunker and sitting in the middle of the fairway. Now, do you take on the bunker which lies across the fairway 100yds short of the green or do you play safe and lay up? Whatever you decide a third shot which lands on the raised green will give you a birdie chance.
Hole 6 – Par 4, Yards 365, Stroke Index 7 This exquisite, short par 4 needs a careful tee shot to land (and stay!) on the fairway avoiding the woods on both sides. (If it’s late summer help yourself to the cherries on the trees!) From there a mid to long iron will see you safely on the green which slopes left to right and has catch-all bunkers front left and right.

The Course Tour Hole 7 – Par 5, Yards 477, Stroke Index 11 A delightful dogleg par 5 needs a careful tee shot to stay away from the bunker on the right of the fairway. A long tee shot will give a chance of reaching the green in 2 and a possible eagle. The green is big and inviting but will always slope right to left.
Hole 8 – Par 4, Yards 390, Stroke Index 5 An excellent hole, full of questions about how to play it. Should I play safe, straight down the middle between the marker posts, leaving myself a mid-iron, or am I really long enough to shave the trees and leave myself a short pitch to the green? The green has enough interesting slopes to test you once you get there, whatever your chosen route!

Hole 9 – Par 3, Yards 149, Stroke Index 17 This is a satisfying hole to par. Almost always into the prevailing wind the flag on the pin often seems as though it is blowing the opposite way to the Club flag on the pole behind the green! Bunkers guard the approach to both tiers of the green. You may need a club more than you think!

The Course Tour Hole 10 – Par 4, Yards 366, Stroke Index 10 A carefully driven tee shot will see you in the middle of the fairway between the markers and placement of this shot will need to be accurate to ensure access to the two-tier green surrounded by the council of trees. Don’t be greedy! The green is a delight unless you have to putt down from the upper level!
Hole 11 – Par 3, Yards 163, Stroke Index 18 The wonderful downhill par 3 is a golfer’s hole. Surrounded by bunkers and wind only in evidence once your ball rises above the trees. It looks simple and you must land on the green and not go over it. Once you’re there the green has excellent borrows to test you.

Hole 12 – Par 4, Yards 305, Stroke Index 4 A very short, low index par 4 hole where you can get shots back - if you are accurate. Send your drive down the left hand side, chip onto the left to right sloping green and you’re there. Long hitters can drive the green - just!

The Course Tour Hole 13 – Par 5, Yards 475, Stroke Index 16 This is a very generous par 5 and a long drive just to the right of the left fairway bunker will allow many golfers to reach the green in 2. But everything draws the ball right into bunkers on both the drive and shorter second shots! The green itself is generous with a few surprises and gentle borrows.

Hole 14 – Par 4, Yards 398, Stroke Index 2 A gorgeous, testing hole, often into wind and which requires accuracy and bravery to achieve par. Send your drive down the left hand side of the fairway, avoiding the bunkers, and you will open up the two tier green. A mid to long iron accurately placed below the hole will offer the chance of a birdie up the slope.
Hole 15 – Par 3, Yards 198, Stroke Index 8 Possibly the most challenging and therefore the most gratifying hole on the course. Accuracy is required to avoid the trees on both sides and the wall on the left. A lone tree asks questions of those with a good draw shot. The green rewards with gentle borrows.

Hole 16 – Par 5, Yards 592, Stroke Index 14 Possibly the Club’s signature hole with marvellous views of both the course and the countryside around it. An accurate drive to the right of the left hand bunker will open the fairway for your second shot to the right of the left-hand bunker. You will need to be sure of your distance to put the ball on the green with your third shot over the guardian bunkers. The green is a wonderful challenge with curves and rolls. A par is an excellent score.
Hole 17 – Par 4, Yards 368, Stroke Index 6 A carefully placed drive between the bunkers will leave you a mid to long iron onto the left to right sloping green on this lovely hole. You must avoid the deep bunker in front of the green on the left and an approach below the hole will serve you in good stead.
Hole 18 – Par 4, Yards 411, Stroke Index 12 Homeward bound is a fairly straightforward hole but the trees which guard the fairway at the midpoint can pose an interesting challenge to the wayward. A clear, well-placed, shot to the green, threading its way through or over the bunkers, gains a probable par, and a satisfactory end to an excellent round of golf. Now to the 19th and excellent cheer!
