Club History

G

olf has been played on the Cleeve Hill, near Cheltenham, since1891, when the Cheltenham Golf Club was formed.

From there the Cheltenham Town Golf Club was founded in 1902 with the name being changed to Cotswold Hills Golf Club two years later.

Both the Cheltenham and Cotswold Hills Golf Clubs shared the same course on Cleeve Hill for over 30 years. When the Cheltenham Golf Club closed in 1935 many of its members joined Cotswold Hills.

In the early 1970s a local farmer offered to sell the club some land, to the south of Cheltenham, with a natural drainage which meant the course would be playable for 12 months of the year.

Although the club continued to play golf on Cleeve Hill for 75 years, struggles with sheep and the public, as well as conflicts with the Board of Conservators over rent, convinced the club to start taking control of its own affairs.

Club History (continued) With the help of an army of volunteers a new golf course was created on 157 acres of land. The course was designed by club member Morris Little and was opened in May of 1976.

Since its opening it has become one of the most respected courses in the county. Cotswold Hills has hosted many prestigious events; this includes the English Ladies’ Amateur Championships and the England Golf County Boys’ Finals.

COTSWOLD HILLS Golf Club | 13

The Course Tour

O

pened in 1976, the course has matured over the years into a stern test of golf and is considered to be one of the finest courses in Gloucestershire. It is a past venue for the English Ladies Amateur Championship and the Men’s and Ladies County Championship. In 2012 we were the proud hosts of the England Golf Boys’ County Finals.

14 | COTSWOLD HILLS Golf Club

The Championship Course, measuring 6800 yards, features long par 5’s, superb short holes and a variety of par 4’s, which are both challenging and great fun to play. Five tee positions are available to allow golfers of varying ability to experience a challenging and enjoyable round of golf. The course is consistently praised for the quality of its greens and its overall presentation.

Hole 1 – Par 4, 391 yards Your tee shot should favour the right hand side of the fairway, to open up a second shot over a valley to the wide sloping green. Hole 2 – Par 4, 379 yards A tee shot to the left hand side of the fairway will leave an uphill short iron shot to this two tiered elevated green. One more club is recommended.

Hole 3 – Par 4, 459 yards This scenic par 4 can play longer than its yardage if the wind is against you. As with the previous hole aim for the left of the fairway to give you the best view of the green. Bunkers guarding the left and right of the green mean an accurate second shot to the putting surface is needed.

Hole 4 – Par 3, 209 yards The first of the par 3’s has a large green. It will take a good shot with a mid or long iron to find the putting surface, where missing to the left leaves a particularly difficult pitch shot.

Hole 5 – Par 5, 589 yards This par 5 is an excellent test of your golfing ability. A straight drive will see you safely to the middle of the fairway. The bunker, 100 yards short of the green, will give you the tough choice of going to clear the sand or laying up short. If hit in three shots, the raised green presents a birdie opportunity.

COTSWOLD HILLS Golf Club | 15

16 | COTSWOLD HILLS Golf Club

The Course Tour (continued) Hole 6 – Par 4, 375 yards Accuracy off the tee is paramount leaving a mid iron shot to an elevated green with a false front. Bunkers to the left and right will catch any shot coming up short.

Hole 7 – Par 5, 488 yards A risk and reward par 5, doglegging to the right. Longer hitters can carry the corner. Shorter hitters will need to plot their way to a wide sloping green. A good birdie opportunity.

Hole 8 – Par 4, 401 yards Tough decisions will have to be made on this hole. The safe shot should be aimed well left of the bunkers, whilst the longer hitters may try to cut the corner leaving a shorter pitch to the green. The putting surface itself is a firm test and a par on this hole is a great result.

18 | COTSWOLD HILLS Golf Club

The Course Tour (continued) Hole 9 – Par 3, 159 yards The signature hole. A wide two tiered green well protected by bunkers on both sides. A tee shot on the correct level will present a good birdie chance.

Hole 10 – Par 4, 373 yards A tee shot to the corner of the dog leg, avoiding the bunker will leave a tough second shot up the hill to another two tiered green, surrounded by trees. A par here is a good start to the second nine.

Hole 11 – Par 3, 170 yards A picturesque par 3, with a green surrounded by bunkers. A precise shot is required to hit this green which has subtle borrows.

COTSWOLD HILLS Golf Club | 19

The Course Tour (continued) Hole 12 – Par 4, 361 yards A drive down the left hand side is your best bet for hitting the green in two with a short iron. The green slopes from left to right and presents a real birdie opportunity.

20 | COTSWOLD HILLS Golf Club

Hole 13 – Par 5, 486 yards This is a generous par 5. A tee shot aiming for the right edge of the bunker on the left hand side of the fairway is your best and will leave a chance of finding the green in two. Avoid the bunkers short of the green or a par will suddenly be difficult to achieve

Hole 14 – Par 4, 408 yards A testing par 4 where a tee shot to the left of the fairway gives the best view of the two tiered green with a false front.

Hole 15 – Par 3, 208 yards One of the of the most challenging holes on the course; avoid the single tree and the wall on the left. A par is an excellent result.

Hole 16 – Par 5, 597 yards One of the longest par 5’s in the county. After two shots you hope you will have a short third shot to the green which will test your skill. Two bunkers will grab any errant shot to the green which had numerous slopes to be negotiated.

The Course Tour (continued) Hole 17 – Par 4, 375 yards A carefully placed drive between the bunkers leaves a tough mid iron shot to the elevated green. Avoid the deep bunker to the left by playing for the middle of the green and you can secure a safe par.

Hole 18 – Par 4, 419 yards The tee shot here needs to negotiate a narrow gap between two copses of trees and a bunker. Find the sloping fairway and a downhill second shot will set you up for a par and allow you to enjoy that well deserved drink a little more!
