Welcome
Since 1890 Datchet Golf Club has been providing a very attractive, well presented course with high quality greens to challenge all levels of golfers.

The course runs along the River Thames under the watchful eye of Windsor Castle. This is a nine-hole course, with fifteen tees, so only three holes are repeated on the back nine.
Datchet Golf Club is one of the oldest courses in the counties of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire.
At 6087 yards it is not a course that can be taken for granted, and as the Pros find out when they play, it commands respect. As a relatively flat parkland course, it is also easy walking and provides an enjoyable day’s golf for all golfers, irrespective of age and handicap.
There is a very good practice area where your long and short game can be fine-tuned, and PGA Head Professional Paul Cook of our Golf Academy is always on hand to give expert advice and tuition. It has a fine clubhouse, completed in 1998 following a fire that destroyed the old, mainly

At Datchet Golf Club you will never be short of a friend to play with as there are roll-ups every day from Monday to Saturday. approximately every third week in summer. There are also monthly mid-week competitions plus a number of mixed events usually followed by a very sociable dinner. The club’s social calendar is very active with Quiz and Race Nights, Skittles Evenings, BBQ’s and many Dinner Dances, as well as regular Sunday lunches. The club is always looking to hold new and exciting events.

History

Golf had been played on Datchet Mead for many years before the club’s formation but in 1890 the club was officially constituted.
Datchet was an interesting choice as a site for the gentlemanly pursuit of golf. For many years the town was known as ‘Black Datchet’ due to the large number of bad characters who lived there. In fact a whole wing at Aylesbury County Gaol was referred to as the ‘Datchet Wing’ as it was filled almost entirely with residents of the town. In the early years the club had a very strong association with Eton College. Many of the club’s founding members were either Masters or alumnii and, given that institutions
fine sporting tradition, many Datchet members excelled at other sporting pursuits besides golf. RAH Mitchell ‘Mike’ Mitchell, the first President of Datchet Golf club was not only a fine golfer but was widely regarded as one of the greatest English cricketers of his generation. In fact, the incomparable WG Grace described him as “the second greatest of all time...after me.” He was such a well-known sporting figure that the characature opposite,

continued which appeared in Vanity Fair magazine in 1896, needed no explanation of who the subject was. The caption read simply ‘Mike’. PJ de Paravicini Percy de Paravicini (1862-1921) was one of the greatest all-round sportsmen England has ever seen. A plus-2 golfer he was a founder member of Datchet Golf Club and captain from 1899 to 1900. He was a two-footed footballer who played full back for Old Etonians in the last
all-amateur team to win the FA Cup in 1882 (they beat the professionals of Blackburn Rovers 1-0). The following year he was capped three times for England in the Home Internationals, the only international football matches in existence at the time. Percy then gave up football to concentrate on his cricketing career. He played first class cricket for Middlesex for over 12 years. Typically, he was an all-rounder as well as being a top-class field.
RH de Montmorency Reychard Hervey de Montmorency was President of Datchet Golf Club from 1921 to 1929. ‘Monty’ is arguably the finest amateur golfer England has ever produced. Playing off a handicap of plus-6 he was an England international for nearly 30 years. Monty captained the first England representative side to travel to the USA to take on the Americans in what became the Walker Cup. Remarkably, Datchet Golf Club provided two of the nine

to be continued England representatives in that match, the other being Percy de Paravacini’s son Freddie. Other notable members of Datchet Golf Club over the years include: England cricket legend George ‘Gubby’ Allen; the composer Reginald Armitage (better known as Noel Gay) whose many credits include the songs Leaning on the Lampost, Run Rabbit Run and the musical Me and My Girl; and James Bond’s nemesis Blofeld, the actor Donald Pleasance.
Both Bing Crosby and Bob Hope played here in 1950. The circumstances were rather unusual. They had agreed to take part in a charity match against two British music hall stars, Ted Ray and Donald Peers. This was to have been played at Temple, but such was the enthusiasm of the non-playing public, who poured over the course, that golf was rendered impossible. Seeking sanctuary, the two Americans stars came to Datchet, enjoyed their round free of harassment and finished their day playing darts
with members in the bar. The Boxer Sugar-Ray Robinson, when middle weight champion of the world, trained in Windsor for some weeks before his fight with Randolph Turpin in 1950. He had in his entourage his own golf Professional, Joe Doakes. Robinson and Doakes played virtually every afternoon at Datchet in a fourball with the club’s Professional, Bill Skinner, and any member available. It is remembered that their fleet of dazzling purple-pink Cadillacs almost filled the club’s car park.

Royal Golfers? A question often asked is "Did any of the royal family ever play at Datchet?" The answer is undoubtedly "Yes" Old George Stevens, who farmed the land adjoining the golf course and who died in the 1960's at a great age,
told of how, as a boy, he caddied for King Edward VII when he was Prince of Wales. His Royal Highness, who was somewhat portly and suffered from shortness of breath, used two caddies. One carried his clubs and the other, George Stevens, carried the chair on which His Royal Highness sat between shots while he got his breath back. At the turn of the century, two of Queen Victoria's grandsons were members at Datchet. One was Prince Albert of Schleswig-Holstein, son of Princess Christian of Schleswig-Holstein, Queen
Victoria's fifth child. The other was his younger cousin, Prince Leopold of Battenburg, whose mother was Princess Beatrice, Queen Victoria's youngest daughter. Prince Albert became very keen and played in club competitions, represented the club in inter-club matches, took the chair at annual general meetings and sat on the committee. His presence in the chair at the A.G.M. would presumably have minimised fractious discussion, which has been known to take place on less auspicious occasions.

Datchet Golf Course is in a beautiful setting running alongside the river Thames with Windsor Castle overlooking the course.
About The Course
The 9 Hole Course with fifteen tees make many of the holes play very differently on the back nine, The Large Tree Lined course is relatively flat which makes it easy walking for all golfers, the undulating shaped greens and Large Tree Lined fairways with strategically placed bunkers makes The Course a Good Challenge for all levels of golfers.
Datchet’s Finishing hole between two large oak trees played over a ravine is one of the hardest par 3’s in The County. When finished a lovely Bar with Patio awaits to talk over your round.

HOLE 1 Although the first hole and its yardage look straightforward enough there are plenty of dangers with out of bounds all the way along the right side and a large oak tree on the left to block your second shot. Ideally hit an iron from this tee to leave yourself a mid to short iron into the green which sits below the surface of the fairway. A good start could be yours but beware. Many a card has been ruined on this simple looking hole.
HOLE 2 Another short par 4, but whatever you choose to hit from the tee ensure you hit the fairway to give yourself the best angle into this long but narrow green. There are three fairway bunkers present to catch any errant drives and if you do happen to end up in one although not deep leaves an extremely tough shot. Again, what should be a birdie hole can bite you.
14
HOLE 3 A tough tee shot here from a raised tee! Make sure to hit it straight to thread it through the gap. Once on the fairway a mid to long iron or even fairway wood is required to hit this two-tiered green. Beware if the pin is positioned on the back right of the green it will take all your skill to two putt. Ladies NB – Try to avoid the grassy ditch short of the green as, once in it, your next shot will be tricky. Lay up short of it to give the best chance to hit the green.
15
Datchet Golf Club

to be continued HOLE 4 Long hitters can try and fly the corner of the dogleg to give a view of the green for their second, the shorter hitter should play the hole as they see it. Aim at the big tree to the right of the fairway from the tee to give the best chance to carry the fairway bunkers with your second. Once over these it is a relatively simple short shot to a mostly flat green but beware of being too bold as could leave a tricky chip and if the pin is at the back, an almost impossible up and down!
HOLE 5 One of our longest par 4s with bunkers galore! Avoid the out of bounds on the right from the tee and you are left with a decision of whether to take on the fairway cross bunkers with your second. If you can get over this leaves a fairly straightforward pitch to the green. The trouble does not end there though as the green is large with a upslope from front to back! This green has the severest breaks and borrows of any green on the course so if you can two putt you should be delighted.
HOLE 6 Another testing par 4 with a large oak tree blocking the right side of the fairway! Longer hitters can fly the tree but if you can’t, try to stick to the cut and prepared fairway. The second shot will require a mid to short iron but avoid the two front greenside bunkers at all costs. Once in these, an extremely deft shot is required, often with very little green to work with between you and the hole. Another hole where a par is an excellent result!

continued HOLE 7 A reasonably straightforward par 3 where 3 bunkers guard the approach! Make sure you hit enough club to get over these! Once on the large two-tiered green a makeable birdie putt could be yours if you are pin high but if not a long and sloping putt is in store. Over the back of the green is deep rough, trees, a ditch and beyond these a busy road! Try to keep your ball away from the traffic!
to be continued HOLE 8 The longest par 4, although straight, danger lies everywhere. From the OB all along the right side to the pesky bush which can block the slightly errant tee shot to the right, the scorecard can take a hammering here. Sacrifice some distance and keep straight is the sensible way to play the hole. The green has a distinct dip in the middle so take this into account when chipping and putting depending on the flag position. A par or nett par on this hole deserves a pat on the back!
HOLE 9 A visually intimidating par 3 as a ditch and several large trees loom in between you and the green. It is only the very tall who can see the putting surface from this tee box! Once you have threaded the gap two bunkers guard the green but once on the short stuff it is a relatively flat green where a one putt is at your mercy. Make sure you finish well here to make your memories of the first nine holes of the course a good one!

Ideally hit an iron from this tee to leave yourself a mid to short iron into the green which sits below the surface of the fairway. A good score for the start of your back nine is possible but this simple looking hole is anything but.
to be continued HOLE 11 A real brute of a par 3 for the men. At 241 yards from the white tees only the longest hitters can hit the putting surface in regulation! For the shorter hitter stay right of the fairway bunker on the left to give yourself the simplest pitch or chip. A bogey is never a bad score on this hole! Ladies – Aim for the middle of the fairway of this Par 4 as the left rough is a long carry.
HOLE 12 A much less intimidating drive from this lower tee box but beware of the railway line running all along the right side of this hole! Once on the fairway you will leave yourself a mid to short iron into the two-tiered green. Ladies NB – Try to avoid the grassy ditch short of the green as, once in it, your next shot will be tricky. Lay up short of it to give the best chance to hit the green.

HOLE 15 In my opinion the toughest hole on the course regardless of stroke index. The driving area is less than 40 yards wide at its narrowest. Once on the fairway you will be left with a fairway wood or long iron into a small green. Good luck and try not to ruin your scorecard on the infamous 15th! Ladies NB – Your forward tee makes this a simpler prospect than the 6th was first time round.

continued HOLE 16 In theory the simplest hole on the course and a good chance for a birdie. You will be hitting a mid to short iron to this two-tired green. If the flag is on the back tier of the putting surface club selection is all important.
to be continued HOLE 17 The last of our par 5s. Longer hitters should view this hole as a good birdie chance as two straight and long hits will get you on or near the green. Shorter hitters two straight hits will leave you a mid to short iron into a large green.
HOLE 18 A wood or a long iron from the tee here! As before this is a visually intimidating shot and even more now as the teebox is further back. Finish with a par here and celebrate with a wellearned drink in the bar. Ladies NB – A formidable prospect from the back tees for the shorter hitters, play short if you are not confident you can carry the ditch and hedges with ease.

Our members and their guests had a thoroughly enjoyable evening and we have had numerous comments expressing how much they enjoyed the food, which, yet again was a major triumph from the caterer with a wonderful meal served to everyone. The atmosphere in the golf club
is always great and this is helped by the staff behind the bar and on this occasion, Julia and Eileen saw us through dinner, with the setting up of the club during the afternoon followed by a hectic evening of activity both behind and in front of the bar. The team of waitresses should not be forgotten as once again, the caterer excelled and looked after us extremely well. Once again please accept our grateful thanks for helping us to celebrate this significant milestone for the Branch." Tam Bates. Chairman.
