An attractive, enjoyable and well maintained 18 hole heathland course, we are blessed with free draining, sandy soil, resulting in a top quality golf experience, all year round. Diss Golf Club was founded in 1903 and sits just to the south of the River Waveney 6

the natural boundary of Norfolk and Suffolk. The club has always affiliated to the Suffolk Golf Union and Suffolk Ladies County Golf Association and currently has around 550 members.

In spite of two World Wars, Diss Golf Club has survived for over 115 years and remains a thriving Member’s Club, governed by a Management Committee, who are elected by the members. Day to day business operations and management is the responsibilityof the club’s General Manager.

On an unrecorded day in 1888, it is reported several people met at the Swan Inn, Stuston and expressed a wish to be able to play golf locally. On 9th November 1888, a notice was placed in the Diss Express stating that a meeting was to be held at the Inn to consider the desirability of forming a golf club.According to the British Golf Museum and listings in various editions of the Golfing Annual, the Stuston Golf Club then became established. This then soon ceased to exist and records unfortunately don’t show the reason for its demise.

It is more than likely that some members of the Stuston Club were behind the creation of Diss Golf Club, instituted in January 1903. The first Annual General Meeting was held at The Cottage (original clubhouse), Stuston Common, on 27th November 1903. At that meeting it was resolved that efforts should be made to revive the golf club and improve the course. No subscriptions were mentioned other than a ÂŁ25 promise from some of the more prosperous new members.

Sir Edward Mann, Bart. Was the first President of the club, holding office for 34

years. He was he High Sheriff of Norwich when he was created a Baronet in 1905.

His son, Sir John Mann Bart. succeeded him as Club President and held the office for the next 27 years.

In 1903, upon its formation, Diss Golf Club obtained consent and licence from the common rights owners to continue to use Stuston Common for the purpose of playing golf, following the closure of the Stuston Club.

For over a century, the nature of the land has changed very little. The whole of the original course was within the confines of the common. It began to take form as a proper nine-hole course on 1909, using only horse and human muscle power, provided by willing and enthusiastic to be continued ď ľ

Ou members. The first significant piece of machinery owned by the club was a Ransomes 15-inch High-Wheeled mower, purchased in 1910, for the sum of five guineas. When the course was ready for play, a measurement was estimated and the Club Committee decided upon a bogey of 40. This stood until 1933, when the English Golf Union accorded the course a standard scratch score of 70.

At the AGM of December 1987, a major move in the golf club’s development occurred. A steering committee, consis-

ting of six senior members of the club made the proposal to extend the course to 18 holes. The reasoning was that, as the club had a waiting list and the popularity of golf was growing quickly, there was an increasing demand for good quality 18 hole courses. The vote resulted in almost 90 per cent approval.

An approach was then made to the owners of the common rights, Messrs Laurie of Stuston, who also owned land adjacent to the common. After lengthy

discussions, the lease of land required was agreed, for a period of 60 years. When completed, the new 18 hole course measured 6238 yards, with a par of 70. It opened for play in 1991.

Hole 1 — Par 3, Yards 209, Stroke Index 9 Our first hole is always a tough start to your round! This is a testing, long uphill par three opening hole, which plays a club more than the yardage indicates.

An accurate tee shot is required, in order to avoid thetwo bunkers thatprotect the green to the front left and right. The large green is flat and even.

Hole 2 — Par 5, Yards 517, Stroke Index 15 The first of our par five holes. Trees line the hole on both sides of the fairway, so a good tee shot is required. Longer hitters who hit the fairway,may have the chance to go for the green in two.However, a long, deep bunker protects the green at the front right. The green slopes severely from back left to front right.

Hole 3 — Par 4, Yards 427, Stroke Index 3 A tough uphill par four that plays longer than its yardage suggests. A good drive over the brow of the hill towards the marker post, will leave around 190 yardsinto the green. Be careful to avoid the out of bounds to the left of the fairway. If you push your tee shot right, trees may block out your second shot to the green. A long deep bunker protects the green at the front left.

Hole 4 — Par 3, Yards 161, Stroke Index 17 The first hole back on the other side of the course and it’s a lovely par 3. Beware the cross wind,which often plays havoc with your tee shot and club selection. Two deep bunkers also protect the front of the green. The green is very undulating, with two distinct tiers.Finding the right level with your tee shot is important, or else you will be left with a tricky two putt to make your par.

Hole 5 — Par 4, Yards 357, Stroke Index 7 A potential risk and reward hole, with a sharp, right to left dog leg. The brave can try to cut the corner, requiring a carry of around 210 yards. However, any balls not making it over the wild rough, may require you to reload. Any approach shots long of the green will fall off the back.

Hole 6 — Par 4, Yards 370, Stroke Index 5 Your tee shot needs to miss the tree that sits at the front middle of this fairway.

Beware the River Waveney, which runs the down the entire left hand-side of the hole. The ditch is out of bounds, so any wayward drive to the left will result with you playing three from the tee.

Hole 7 — Par 3, Yards 177, Stroke Index 13 A very tricky par three, where it is difficult to hit and hold the green. Any shots right of the green will fall away into a deep hollow, leaving a delicate chip up to the green. The green slopes away on all sides like an upside-down saucer and depth perception from the tee can be tricky.

Hole 8 — Par 4, Yards 413, Stroke Index 1 A tough par four and longer hitters will need to hit it much further left off the tee than they think. This hole is a dog leg left, with a fairway bunker to the right side of the fairway, at most people’s driving distance. A good tee shot for most, will still leave a long to mid iron approach, to a green which is verynarrow.

Hole 9 — Par 4, Yards 337, Stroke Index 11 A straight tee shot is required here, avoiding the trees on the left and the two bunkers at driving distance on the right.

The second shot is to a partly hidden green, situated beyond many grassy mounds. A steep bank at the back of the green can help control overhit approaches and the green is two-tiered.

CO Hole 10 — Par 4, Yards 404, Stroke Index 4 Trees protect the right-hand side of this hole, howeverthe fairway slopes from right to left,meaning tee shotsshould be aimed down the right of the fairway, if you want to find the middle. Deep rough lies to the left of the fairway and any tee shots here could result in a lost ball.

Hole 11 — Par 4, Yards 306, Stroke Index 14 The shortest par four on the golf course and a good birdie opportunity. An uphill drive over an area of rough, will leave an uphill second shot to one of our larger greens. Longer hitters will be able to reach the top of the hill with their tee shot,resulting in an easier approach, with a clear view of the green. Any drives to the right side of the fairway will end up in, or blocked out, by trees.

Hole 12 — Par 3, Yards 151, Stroke Index 16 You have now reached the start of Diss Golf Club’s very own Amen Corner! This hole is a visually very attractive and inviting par three, although it requires precise club selection to hit and hold the narrow, wide green. Any tee shots short or long will fall into the grassy mounds that surround this green, leaving a tricky chip to get up and down for your par. to be continued 

CO Hole 13 — Par 4, Yards 468, Stroke Index 2 The signature hole at Diss Golf Club! This is the longest par four and is statistically the hardest hole on the course. Aim your tee shot at the marker post in the fairway.

A tee shot over 230 yards will then allow you a chance to reach the green with your second shot. Longer hitters should be careful not to hit it much further than 260 yards off the tee, to avoid running out of fairway and reaching a steep drop.

The green is small and very tough to hit in regulation, with run off areas all around it.

Hole 14 — Par 4, Yards 404, Stroke Index 8 The final hole of Diss Golf Club’s Amen Corner! This hole plays uphill and therefore often much longer than the yardage suggests. It is a left to right dog leg and most player’s line off the tee should be just left of the pylon in the distance. Longer hitters may wish to try and cut the corner over the trees on the left, which will greatly reduce the length of the hole.

Hole 15 — Par 3, Yards 148, Stroke Index 18 The start of some holes which allow you to make up your score coming in now. This short par three is a good birdie opportunity, if you get your club selection right. It is adownhill tee shot, onto a green which is wellguarded by four deep bunkers at the front and rear. The green is narrow and wide, with a slight run off to the left. Out of bounds lies to the right and rear of this hole.

Hole 16 — Par 4, Yards 354, Stroke Index 10 You have now turned for home to play this short par four. Avoid the trees to the left and the fairway bunker on the right with your tee shot and you’ll have a mid, to short iron into the green. With the wind behind, longer hitters can be left with just a short pitch into the green. The green is large and flat, but avoid the trees cutting in on the left side.

Hole 17 — Par 5, Yards 529, Stroke Index 6 Although a long hole, you are provided with a more generous fairway and another good birdie opportunity. Be aware of the out of bounds to the right for your second shot.

The green slopes gently from left to right, with grass bunkers to the right and rear.

Hole 18 — Par 5, Yards 470, Stroke Index 12 A second consecutive par 5 as the last hole, allowing for a finish to savour! An accurate tee shot is required, avoiding the gorse that hugs the left-hand side of the fairway.Your second shot also needs to be straight and threaded between the two fairway bunkers. The green is long and narrow, with a gentle back to front slope.
