Personal Statement from the Captain It is my pleasure to introduce Douglas Park Golf Club as your choice for challenging golf and friendly clubhouse surroundings in a Bearsden, Milngavie and West End of Glasgow location. The club has a healthy range of teams covering all handicap levels in the Ladies, Gents and Junior ranks and we are always looking to expand the pool from which these teams are chosen, so if you seek some competitive team participation as well as regular medal play, then you are very welcome here at Hillfoot. Our teams, whether at home or away, enjoy a great social interaction with our local league opponents on match days which all adds to the experience. Our golf course is a full 18 hole challenge over 5981 yards, with a par of 69 for gents and 72 for ladies.
We have everything you would expect from a top class golf club, from our friendly, well-stocked and professionally operated Pro Shop to the top class catering facilities in our clubhouse lounge with a dining room available for private meetings or functions. It is a fine place to be part of and we invite you to come along and share the Douglas Park Experience with us, be it on or off the course. Douglas Park is conveniently located on the A81 trunk road from the West End of Glasgow to Milngavie, right at Hillfoot Rail Station. We have a large car park and you can arrive here very easily on foot or by car, bus or train. I look forward to welcoming you soon.

About the Course and it’s History In June 1897 Mr Will Gibson invited “a number of his influential friends and neighbours” to a meeting to discuss the formation of a golf course on the ground at Douglas Park on Milngavie Road. Eleven people turned up and within 14 weeks they had taken a lease on the land, drained the land and constructed a nine hole course. The also accepted an estimate to build an iron clubhouse for the sum of £150 and the course duly opened in October 1897. The railway to Milngavie had opened in 1863 and membership of Douglas Park mushroomed when a station was built at Hillfoot almost adjacent to the course. Additional ground
8 | Douglas Park Golf Club
was quickly acquired and an eighteen hole layout designed by Willie Fernie of Troon. This opened on 5th September 1903. After further changes, the ground presently occupied by the club was purchased in 1922 and further ground was acquired in 1932 leading to the formation of the course which is recognisable as our present day layout subject to one or two later adjustments. The present clubhouse was opened in 1938 and provides locker rooms and a generously proportioned lounge with a panoramic view over the first and eighteenth holes. Douglas Park has produced a number of very fine golfers
and among the most notable were two who came through our junior ranks and are still with us as regular playing members. Harry MacAnespie was winner of the British Boys Golf Championship at St Andrews in 1949, beating future Ryder Cup plyer, Norman Drew in the final. David Carrick’s distinguished career included winning the Scottish Amateur Championship in 1985 and representing Great Britain and Ireland in the Walker Cup in 1983 and 1987. He was later a Walker Cup selector for many years. Belle Robertson, who played in seven Curtis Cup matches
and subsequently captained the British team, has been an honorary member of Douglas Park since 1989. One further unique feature of Douglas Park is its relationship to the Antonine Wall which runs through the 13th and 15th holes. The wall was built about 140AD by Roman troops and is an archaeological monument of international importance, being one of the best preserved frontier systems of the whole of the Roman Empire. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Hole-by-Hole Course Tour
Hole 1 - Kilmardinny 402 Yards, Par 4
Total Course Lengths Gents Medal (white tees) Gents (yellow tees) Ladies Medal (red tees)
5981 Yards 5761 Yards 5471 Yards
Hole 2 - Neck 344 Yards, Par 4
A good par 4 to open with
A short but tricky par 4
TEE SHOT With the railway line on the left and trees on the right, a straight drive down the middle is best.
TEE SHOT The best place to drive is down the left half of the fairway to avoid the trees on the right and to open up the green. APPROACH A bold shot into the heart of this slightly elevated green is required and be sure to steer clear of the left side where there is a steep bank incorporating a bunker.
APPROACH As the green drops gently from the right, the line is slightly right of centre. GREEN a fairly large, flat green with gentle borrows. Be ready to pause for a passing train.
10 | Douglas Park Golf Club
GREEN A two tier green rising from front to back with a fall from right to left. Worth a second look are the five beautiful birch trees situated to the right of the green, with striking paper-like bark.
Hole 3 - Firs 132 Yards, Par 3 A short par 3 TEE SHOT As the green is long and narrow and the bottom of the pin cannot be seen from the tee, club selection is important. Avoid going left where the ground falls away sharply. GREEN The green falls away gently from front to back and from right to left Appreciate the beautiful stand of Scots Pine trees which cradle this hole.
Hole 4 - Boclair 442 Yards, Par 4 A difficult dog-leg par 4. TEE SHOT The drive should be aimed slightly to the left of centre to avoid the second shot being blocked by trees on the right. Too far left and the green may be out of reach of the second shot. APPROACH The safest route into the green is left of centre. Beware of the boundary fence close to the green on the right. GREEN A two tier green which rises from front to back. Another fine wood of pine trees on the left as you approach the green.
Douglas Park Golf Club | 11
Hole 5 - Hedge 240 Yards, Par 3 A tough par 3 from an elevated tee. TEE SHOT Aim straight at the green. GREEN A generally flat green with subtle borrows. Fine views of the surrounding countryside now begin to unfold
12 | Douglas Park Golf Club
Hole 6 - Victorious VI 311 Yards, Par 4 A short par 4 with the green hidden from the tee. TEE SHOT Aim for the direction marker post. Beware of two small concealed bunkers below the left shoulder of the fairway waiting menacingly to ambush a pulled drive. APPROACH An accurate shot is required to avoid the bunkers at the front and the troublesome rough at the back of the green. GREEN Rises smoothly from front to back with some capricious undulations. This hole is named after the famous Roman VI Legion which was present in the area around 140 AD.
Hole 7 - Dougalston 385 Yards, Par 4 An interesting par 4, slightly dog-leg to the right. TEE SHOT The line is to the left of the fairway to open up the green. To the right is trouble with trees and the river. An open water course (penalty ditch) crosses the fairway and may make some players consider playing a shorter club from the tee. APPROACH This shot may be longer than you think. It pays to be well up on this green so take plenty of club. GREEN A fairly flat green with obvious slopes and borrows. On leaving the green, if you have time, take a few steps to the right and watch small trout ripple the water of the River Allander.
Hole 8 - Knowe 433 Yards, Par 4 A long par 4, slightly uphill all the way. TEE SHOT Aim the drive for the centre of the fairway to stay well clear of the trees on either side. APPROACH Unfortunately a good drive may result in an uphill lie for the second shot. Straight for the green is the line with plenty of club to avoid leaving it short on the upslope. GREEN The green drops resolutely from back to front and great care is required with the approach putt, especially if putting from above the hole. As you leave the green, admire the expanding views from this elevated part of the course.
Douglas Park Golf Club | 13
Hole 9 - Haugh 467 Yards, Par 4 Another long par 4. TEE SHOT Straight down the fairway between the conifer plantations is the best line. Beware of a hidden bunker just over the brow of the slope on the left, beyond the trees. APPROACH Hit straight at the green. The water course crossing the fairway should not cause problems for a well hit shot. GREEN The green has a faintly perceptible rise from front to back. From the tee, a fine view northward to the Campsie Hills, the colours of which vary with changing light.
14 | Douglas Park Golf Club
Hole 10 - Burnbrae 383 Yards, Par 5 This par 5 is the longest hole on the course. TEE SHOT Keep to the centre of the fairway if possible but the right side may be kinder to a wayward drive than the left. Too far right inivtes problems with a lateral water hazard near the boundary fence. APPROACH Keep progressing up the centre for, as the convex green is reached, the left and right approaches are guarded by bunkers. GREEN Parts of this green have sharp slopes and undulations. As you leave the green, take a deep breath to prepare you for the climb to the 11th tee.
Hole 11 - Island 308 Yards, Par 4 A short, picturesque and sometimes difficult par 4. TEE SHOT From the elevated tee, the drive should be aimed slightly right of centre APPROACH With bunkers right and left guarding the green, and a steep slope on the right, an accurate shot is required. GREEN The green drops subtly from back to front and from left to right. From the tee, notice on the left the copse with a variety of specimen trees planted as part of the club’s centenary celebrations. From the green, a pleasant walk through the pine wood takes you to the 12th tee.
Hole 12 - Whin Hill 433 Yards, Par 4 A par 3 to a steeply elevated hidden green. TEE SHOT There is absolutely no merit in being short with the tee shot. GREEN A narrow green with a concealed bunker on the right. You have had a stiff climb from tee to green so so take a couple of seconds to catch your breath before putting.
Douglas Park Golf Club | 15
Hole 13 - Roman Wall 477 Yards, Par 5 An undulating and testing par 5. TEE SHOT The best line is slightly left of centre, but no further right than the marker post as the right hand side of the fairway can give an awkward sloping stance. APPROACH Follow the marker posts which point the way to this hidden green. GREEN A large flat green with subtle and uncertain borrows. Be alert for players playing the adjoining 16th hole.
16 | Douglas Park Golf Club
Hole 14 - Dyke 381 Yards, Par 4 A challenging par 4. TEE SHOT Aim to the right of the fairway as the ground falls away steeply from right to left. APPROACH Take more club than you think as this is a large green and the upslope from front to back will hold the ball. GREEN Tricky borrows especially near the back of the green. Try to ignore the sound of traffic on busy Boclair Road.
Hole 15 - Mount 200 Yards, Par 3
Hole 16 - Braes 399 Yards, Par 4
A difficult uphill par 3 with a left to right downslope. This par 4 requires some care. TEE SHOT TEE SHOT Plenty of room, so open your shoulders and hit one down The tee shot is longer than it looks and should be aimed at the middle. the left half of the green to take account of the slope. Too far left and the next shot could be a difficult one from APPROACH beneath a steep bank. Now for the tricky bit. The ground in front of the green falls sharply towards the left of the green and there is a very GREEN A generous green which slopes obviously down from left to steep hidden banking beyond the green. Accurate clubbing is essential. right. It sits on the line of the Antonine Wall and as this is the highest point in the locality, no doubt at one time Roman soldiers stood guard where we now putt. GREEN A mainly flat green with gentle borrows. Take in the wonderful 360 degree vista with Ben Lomond visible to the North-West on a clear day. Be alert for players playing the adjoining 13th hole.

Course guide prepared by Dr Harry MacAnespie
Hole 17 - Wood 136 Yards, Par 3 A short but thought provoking par 3 over a ravine. TEE SHOT There is no fairway so the tee shot must be accurate or big trouble may ensue Avoid the right side at all costs. GREEN This can be a difficult green with fast swinging borrows especially near the front and left. Have a look at the magnificent beech tree which dominates the left of the green.
Hole 18 - Home 331 Yards, Par 4 A straightforward par 4. TEE SHOT The elevated tee provides for a most enjoyable final drive. Straight down the centre is best to avoid trouble with trees right and left. Before driving make sure players are out of range and be aware that the adjoining 1st hole is out of sight on the right. APPROACH An uncomplicated shot for the most part. GREEN A spacious double-tiered green reposing under the benign gaze of the fine clubhouse. Well done. You have earned the refreshment which awaits you at the 19th hole. Douglas Park Golf Club | 19

Key Holes Douglas Park has a “signature hole it is probably the 7th which is a scenic dog leg right of moderate difficulty in which two accurately played shots are rewarded. Competition analysis suggests that the 3rd, 6th and 10th are the most frequently birdied but each has individual features which can test even the most skilful players. The 5th, 8th and 9th are the most difficult partly because of length.
