two miles South West of Dunstable on Whipsnade Road, high on the crest of the Chiltern Hills nearly 800 feet above sea level, Dunstable Downs is famous as a beauty spot and viewpoint with a panorama taking in five counties. The bracing air and the glorious downland turf, set in an area of outstanding natural beauty, makes it an ideal spot for golf.

The present layout, designed by fivetimes Open Champion, James Braid, provides a real challenge for golfers of all abilities. There are 18 holes over 6,273 yards par 70, SSS 71. Thanks to the chalky subsoil, the course is playable for most of the year and is always dry with fast, true contoured greens. Our greens staff pride themselves in the way they present the course to ensure it is always in its best possible condition

HISTORY

Golf was first played in Dunstable in 1895. A few enthusiasts, mainly connected with Dunstable School, had their own small private club on a nine-hole course in the park behind the school.

As with many historic courses at the time, the course was rather rudimentary in design, construction and maintenance.

Despite the conditions being somewhat primitive it is also clear from reading press articles from

the day just how popular the game was and would become. The standard of play was so high that this small club held its own matches with larger and more prestigious clubs. With demand for play growing, and when the land in the centre of town was required for other purposes, these early pioneers looked around and sought ways and means not only of continuing the small association, but of endeavouring to draw support from the immediate neighbourhood. With the help of a few

members of this old private club and the cooperation of certain prominent Dunstable townsmen, some 12 acres of land on the Downs were purchased, including an old public house known as ‘California’ which was the site of the original clubhouse. In November 1906, the Dunstable Golf Club was formed.

The foundation of the club was mainly due to the efforts of E.E Apthorpe, C C S Benning, J Healing, Arthur Staddon and L C R Thring.

It was not long before a nine-hole course was deemed insufficient so with the club leasing an additional 52 acres of land together with some wasteland on the Downs, the course was expanded to 18 holes in 1912. Part of this course was on the common and five holes were on the ‘other’ side of Whipsnade Road. Three of the holes survive in their entirety today; The Long (11th), Tumulus (17th) and Death or Glory (18th).

The growing popularity of the Downs as a viewpoint and pleasure resort

and the increased traffic due to the establishment of Whipsnade Zoo made revisions to the layout inevitable.

The club seized the opportunity to purchase Downs farm in February 1930, gave up part of the original course on common land and in the spring of 1930, aske James Braid to redesign the course.

Early in 1931 Braid came to inspect the construction work and made two minor modifications to is original plan. The new

course was opened without ceremony on the 26th September 1931, its yardage being 6579, longer than today.

With a new clubhouse being constructed in the centre of the course, club secretary Tom Moore was entrusted with the task of renumbering the course and overcoming some of the problems highlighted by the members of the day, which included excessive length on some of the holes and strenuous climbing on others.

HISTORY

It is this layout that has provided the skeleton framework that has remained little altered ever since.

Dunstable’s solution to the gauntlet thrown down by enhanced equipment technology was to subtly add back length to the course by adding new medal tees.

Safety concerns relating to the proximity of residential housing on the third hole resulted in the tee being moved further back, creating one of the

county’s longest and most challenging holes.

In 1987 Peter Aliss and Dave Thomas Ltd started work on the new winter eighth and ninth greens.

A key aspect of 2020 Vision is to be sympathetic to James Braid’s original design principles. Detailed study of his architectural principles in his book Advanced Golf helped the team ensure the work being undertaken is in-keeping with his architectural style and philosophy.

The current management committee focus is now based on improving the quality of the course condition.

COURSE

Hole One - FOSSEY’S FARM Pro’s Tip

A short downhill par 5, usually with the prevailing wind, is an opportunity to start your round with a Par or better. A good drive favouring the left side of the fairway should utilise the downhill slope and leave you in perfect shape for your second shot. The long hitter could easily reach the green with their 2nd shot albeit a blind shot up the hill.

The shorter hitter is advised to favour the right side of the fairway,

avoiding the deep cross bunker, to leave a pitch shot up the full length of the green. Beware going through the green with your approach as getting up and down will test you to the maximum.

Hole Two -TOM MOORE

Pro’s Tip

Usually into the wind, an accurate mid / long iron at least is required to hit what is probably the most difficult green on the course. Anything past the flag and 2 putts is a difficult task. Take your 3 and run to the next Tee.

Hole Three - HEALING’S DRIVE Pro’s Tip

The longest hole on the course. At just under 600yds, 3 good shots are almost always required to get home. The 30yds or so before the green takes the ball from left to right and towards the back of the green. Aim short and to the left side of the green to remain on the putting surface. A tricky, undulating green awaits you once you finally arrive.

Pro’s Tip

A strategic hole that requires a positional tee shot to the crest of the hill and to the right of the fairway bunkers. A long hitter using Driver may reach the green, but more often lose their ball! The sensible option leaves a mid to short iron to a large target green. Another undulating green that would be best served putting from below the flag wherever the pin position.

Pro’s Tip

A tricky Par 3 which plays slightly uphill and where the wind can swirl amongst the trees. A wide but narrow target guarded by several bunkers requires a solid tee shot to the centre of the green wherever the Pin placement. Despite the yardage, a Par 3 to make your 3 and happily move on.

Pro’s Tip

A straight away par 4 demanding an accurate tee shot between the avenue of trees. Important to try and hit the correct level of a 2-tier green with your approach. A false front makes this a difficult task. Bunkers to the sides of the green are wise to be avoided as they are a tough “up and down”.

Pro’s Tip

An inviting Tee shot from a spectacular elevated tee. Avoiding the fairway bunkers is rewarded with a short iron to a large green. Ordinarily a putt with a few feet of borrow needs to be negotiated to secure your birdie.

Hole eight - BRAID’S BEST

Pro’s Tip

Stroke index 1 and boy, what a Par 4 awaits. Nothing but a long drive down the left side of the fairway will leave you with a chance of reaching the elevated green in regulation. A 3 shot hole for most with an approach shot to a very narrow green amongst the valley. A par 4 here and you have beaten the field on most days. A tricky putt awaits.

Hole nine - RAVINE

Pro’s Tip

The signature Par 3 hole of just over 120yds. It is fair to say that it is green or broke. Hit the green and a birdie is on the cards. Miss the green and let’s hope you have the short game skills of Phil Mickelson to secure a Par.

Hole ten - THREE BROTHERS

Pro’s

Tip

The first of 3 difficult Par 4 holes to start to road home. A slight dog leg left to right over the crest of the hill. A generous tee shot but the left side of the fairway always leaves a better view of all the green. Out of Bounds on the right awaits a tee shot with too much left-to-right shape. A very undulating putting surface where 2 putts is good all day long. Bunkers await an inaccurate approach.

Hole eleven - THE LONG

Pro’s Tip

Into the prevailing wind ordinarily, a monster of a Par 4. Long drive to left of the fairway bunkers gives the long hitter the chance of reaching in regulation. Like the 8th, a 3 shot hole for most. 2 front bunkers need negotiating with your approach into the green. Make your 4 here and you are 1 up on the field for sure.

Hole twelve - FIVE COUNTIES

Pro’s Tip

Probably the best Par 4 on the Golf Course. A strong tee shot required to clear the large expanse of fairway bunkers. Take a second to admire the view on the left as you stride to your ball, spectacular. A long approach shot will remain to a large green, but heavily guarded by 2 front bunkers and slopes to the back and side. 2 putts from long range is usually the task ahead on a fairly flat surface.

Hole thirteen - BENNETT’S DRIVE

Pro’s Tip

After 3 demanding Par 4’s, a little breather of 3 short par 4 holes consecutively gives the golfer a chance to improve or steady their score. The long- hitter, with the prevailing wind, can reach in 1. Get the club selection correct with your shot to the green and a good look at a birdie awaits.

Hole fourteen - CALIFORNIA

Pro’s Tip

Slight Dog leg left to right. A blind tee shot over the crest of the hill. The fairway extends to the left of the fairway bunker. This leaves a short iron with a straight approach to all flag positions. Go for the green from the tee and be prepared to accept the risk of a wayward shot. A very difficult green to putt on with severe slopes to read.

Hole fifteen - PLATEAU

Pro’s Tip

A tee shot to the right of the fairway and the slope should bring your ball to the bottom of the valley. An uphill approach shot from a sloping lie and a yardage that plays longer than you think, demands good technique. Miss the green left and a certain bogey looms.

Pro’s Tip

A fantastic long Par 4, sweeping left to right and slightly uphill. Avoid the several fairway bunkers at all costs. Club up with your shot to the green to avoid the front green bunkers and reach the heart of a long green. All in all just a great hole.

Pro’s Tip

A birdie opportunity awaits those who keep their concentration and are not dreaming of a well-earned drink in the Clubhouse straight ahead. A tee shot on this short par 4, avoiding the cross bunkers, will leave a short iron approach to an undulating green. A good chance to pick a shot up before taking on the demanding 18th hole.

Pro’s Tip

The last of the 4 Par 3 holes on the course and arguably the most difficult. A card wrecker!!! An accurate tee shot into a green surrounded by bunkers tests all but the very best in calm conditions let alone with the usual breeze to factor in. Fail to hit the green and a 3 is a tough ask. Once on the green, the undulations are more exaggerated than at first observed.

The process of joining is simple and membership fees can be paid by instalments. Gone are the days of formal interviews with the committee or playing

auditions with a committee member.

PROFESSIONAL

Weare proud to have Darren Charlton as our resident PGA Professional at Dunstable Downs Golf Club. Darren has been with the club for a number of years having come from our Junior ranks before turning professional in 1991.

As an amateur, Darren won our own Club Championship five times from 1986 to 1990 before winning the County Championship in 1990. Darren’s success continued on the professional stage

Lessons

With over 25 years’ experience teaching players of all levels, from beginners to fellow Professionals, Darren has built up an excellent reputation as a PGA Level 3 golf coach. Darren offers simple to understand instructions tailored to the individual player’s needs, delivering top quality advice on technique and course management to players of all standards. Lessons are available on all aspects of the game, as well as on-course lessons.

Junior Coaching Sessions

Junior individual tuition is available at a reduced price of £17.50 for 45 minutes, which means that the “six lessons for the price of five” offer is great value at just £87.50. Remember, all Junior Members are entitled to one FREE individual lesson per year. Junior group coaching is also available throughout the season.

A re-gripping, re-shafting and general club repair service is available.

Custom Fitting

If you are serious about improving your game, custom fitting your equipment is the best decision you can make. Darren has been through a comprehensive, PGA certified training designed to instruct them to properly fit equipment to match every golfer’s swing. Customising the clubs to position the golfer in the ideal position for their physical characteristics will train the individual to address the ball with the correct posture and swing along the ideal swing plane, which all

adds up to the correct impact position and better scores.

The Two’s Club

Have some added incentive in Club Competitions and enter the Two’s Club. Make a two on any hole during the round and win a share of the pot. Winners’ names are posted after each competition.

Adrienne’s is a busy family run florist based in the town centre of Leighton Buzzard. We specialise in flowers for all occasions and for all budgets, including birthdays, anniversaries, new baby, thank you and get well, as well as sympathy flowers.

Our funeral flower service is very popular, with arrangements available to choose from our portfolio or bespoke. We will always be able to help you make your flower choices at this difficult time.

SECTIONS

Ladies –

Dunstable Downs has a strong Ladies section that welcomes all new lady members. If you are looking to join a new club, we would love to meet you. If you are new to golf, come and try one of our introductory free taster sessions called ‘Ladies who golf’. The session covers how to hold and swing the golf club, how to strike the ball, some putting with a little competition at the end of the session. Refreshment

and equipment are provided, you just need to contact the office to book your place. Golf is a great way to get fit and make new friends, so come and join us. Then you can progress to our Academy Membership where you can learn how to play the game in more detail.

We are a friendly club offering both social and competitive golf. Our main competition day is Wednesday, and you can play in the morning or afternoon. After playing ladies gather for a sociable drink and a chat. For

those ladies who are unable to play competitions on a Wednesday we have an alternative day on a Sunday. If you are over the age of 50 you can join our Senior Ladies, who meet every Monday morning for a fun game.

On Friday morning the ladies organise a ‘roll-up’ which means you can just turn up at 10:00 am if you fancy a game and it is a good way for new members to meet other ladies. Friday games are usually fun team events and are very relaxed.

SECTIONS

In addition to our in-house competitions the ladies arrange friendly and competitive fixtures with many other clubs. You would be welcome to join the various teams which gives you an opportunity to play a variety of different courses. Every year the club enters and participates in the County Scratch and Handicap leagues.

The Mixed Section is well supported with many in-house competitions. During the year we also have friendly mixed matches against other clubs

at home and away. These events are usually followed by a social informal enjoyable meal and again you will be welcome to join the team. The club also offers a regular program of social activities, such as bridge, quiz nights and themed events.

Juniors –

Dunstable Downs Golf Club is passionate about introducing juniors to golf whilst at the same time letting them have fun. We also want parents to know that we are giving their

children an excellent opportunity to learn the sport and to develop their skills using England Golf’s Junior Passport System. This is the national structured learning programme for children and endorsed by the PGA and having three key levels, being: START, LEARN and PLAY.

As a club we are very proud of our juniors and aim to provide a safe, welcoming and exciting environment for all abilities.

SECTIONS

Seniors –

The senior men’s section of Dunstable Downs Golf Club is open to all members who are 55 and over and are ‘substantially’ retired. There is a one-off fee of £5 to join the section.

The seniors meet on Tuesday and Friday mornings at 07:45 for a ‘roll up’ competition, where everyone gets a game regardless of ability. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet new members as well as make new

friends. All seniors are considered for selection to play in the very popular and enjoyable ‘Downsmen’ inter-club matches. These are played both at home and away against other top county clubs.

The Dunstable Downs Golf Club Downsmen also play many enjoyable matches with the ladies and juniors, making sure they keep their reputation on track! An eclectic league is run throughout the summer months which is a qualifying competition for handicap.

Do come and join us for a round, you can be sure of a hearty welcome. You can often find us enjoying a post-game drink in the clubhouse and we’re very keen to welcome newcomers.

Find Us Dunstable Downs Golf Club is situated on Whipsnade Road (A4541), at the top of The Downs and can be approached from the M1, junctions nine, 11 or 11a. Sat Nav LU6 2NB

From London & The M25

Take the M1 North and leave at Junction nine. Take the A5 towards Dunstable and follow signs for Kensworth and Whipsnade Zoo. Travel through the village of Kensworth, following the signs for Whipsnade Zoo. After leaving Kensworth, turn right at the mini roundabout and follow signs for Dunstable Downs. The golf club is located on the right-hand side, after passing The National Trust visitor centre on the left.

From the North

Take the M1 South and leave at Junction 11a. Take the A505 towards Leighton Buzzard. Go straight across the first roundabout

and continue to the next roundabout. Take the second exit at the roundabout, following the A5 and then take the 1st exit at the next roundabout, towards Dunstable. Follow the road past a petrol station and the White Lion pub on the right-hand side and through the “chalk cutting”. Travel through the first set of traffic lights and at the 2nd set of lights, turn right onto Brewers Hill Road. Follow this road, continuing on to Drovers Way and come to a T junction / mini roundabout. Turn right, onto West Street and after 300 yards, turn left at the next mini roundabout, following signs for Dunstable Downs. The golf club is located after a mile, on the left-hand side.

From Milton Keynes

Take the A5 South and travel through Hockliffe. two miles after leaving Hockliffe, take the third exit at the roundabout, following the A5 and then take the first exit at the next roundabout, towards Dunstable. Follow the road past a petrol station and the White Lion pub on the right-hand side and through the “chalk cutting”. Travel through the 1st set of traffic lights and at the second set of lights, turn right onto Brewers Hill Road. Take the A505 towards M1 Junction 11. Follow the A505 towards Dunstable and Tring, continuing on to Luton Road, Church Street and West Street. After joining West Street, continue past Dunstable Cemetery on the left-hand side, with Chiltern Road and Drovers Way on the right-hand side. 300 yards past Drovers Way, turn left at the next mini roundabout, following signs for Dunstable Downs. The golf club is located after a mile, on the left-hand side.
