The Club was founded in 1906 as a nine-hole course, designed by Willie Park Jnr, twice a winner of the Open Championship.
The Club’s first President was Sidney Carr Hobart-HampdenMercer-Henderson, the 7th Earl of Buckinghamshire.
In 1930, 52 acres of land were purchased on the north side of the Wendover to Princes Risborough road enabling a further nine holes to be added. These were opened in 1933 to
the design of James Braid, five-times Open winner and at that time the Professional at Walton Heath Golf Club.
The 18-hole course, located on the Chiltern Escarpment, is dominated by Coombe Hill on which stands the monument erected after the Boer War to honour the Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. The monument is the highest point for many miles around and the local adage to ‘putt towards the monument’ is invariably sound advice.
Many PGA professionals have played at Ellesborough, but Open Championship winners Harry Vardon, Ted Ray, Henry Cotton, Max Faulkner and Greg Norman are the most notable.
Situated on the edge of the Chiltern escarpment and adjacent to the Chequers Estate, the course is noted for its stunning views across the Vale of Aylesbury and the surrounding countryside, gently undulating fairways, and excellent greens. With a par of 71, it measures 6,379 yards for men and 5,445 yards for ladies.
This rural location, away from urban housing and the disturbance of main roads and railway lines, is just one of the reasons we believe Ellesborough to be simply the best year-round course for many miles around.
As a chalk downland course, Ellesborough enjoys excellent drainage, with good playing conditions throughout the seasons. The undulation of the land
and the variety of holes allow for an interesting game where each round will bring different challenges.
The greens are a strong feature of the course and have long held a reputation as some of the finest and most challenging in the area. Legend has it that all the lines slope away from the Coombe Hill monument that stands guard over the course.
Whilst that is a good yardstick, members will know that the subtleties of the Ellesborough greens will ensure that no putt can be predicted easily.
If you miss the putting surface in regulation your short game will be tested to the full as it is quite difficult to get up and down to save par. This combination of varying holes, undulating fairways and true
running but subtle greens, provide an everchanging experience each time the course is played.
With three par fours, three par-3s and three par-5s, (including the 554yard 15th) the inward nine makes for exceptional matchplay golf, and there can be no letting down one’s guard, particularly as two of the hardest holes are not encountered until the
14th and 15th – stroke indices 1 and 3 respectively into the prevailing wind.
All the holes have their own unique attributes, but among the most memorable is the 5th, a tough par-3 which is well protected by bunkers all round. Possessing one of the hardest greens on the course, with a difficult undulating putting surface containing some very subtle borrows, a player of

In recent years investment into course machinery has seen an improved all round playing surface, from the greens to the tees and everywhere in between. Ellesborough has teamed up with the Outstanding Area of Natural Beauty organisation to help bring
Ellesborough back to a true downland golf course. This has involved a substantial woodland management programme over recent years and the course is now reaping the benefit of these changes.

Hole 1, 346 yards (Men) 265 yards (Ladies) par 4
A simple but deceptive opening par 4. Not a long hole, but a well positioned drive is the key to setting up the shot to a sloping green.
Hole 2, 513 yards (Men) 454 yards (Ladies) par 4
A gentle dog-leg par 5, two good shots will open up a generous green and a birdie opportunity.
Hole 3, 412 yards (Men) 373 yards (Ladies) par 4
A gentle dog-leg left, where the drive needs to be placed carefully over a ridge to allow an uphill approach to the green.
Hole 4, 376 yards (Men) 323 yards (Ladies) par 4
One of the hardest holes on the course, with a raised green protected by a high bunker that rewards accurate shot-making.
Hole 5, 186 yards (Men) 134 yards (Ladies) par
The first par 3 is a long one, slightly uphill and protected by bunkers at the front and sides. The problems are not over when on the green, as the slopes and speed of this green test even the very best putters.
Hole 6, 407 yards (Men) 293 yards (Ladies) par 4
A well-positioned drive is essential on this testing par 4 where tree avoidance
and alignment is everything.
Hole 7, 396 yards (Men) 346 yards (Ladies) par 4
A straight par 4 hole, but with the challenge of a large well-positioned fairway bunker and a raised green. Trees along the right-hand side of the hole keep the golfer honest…and nervous!
Hole 8, 181 yards (Men) 153 yards (Ladies) par 4
A par 3 across a gentle dip to the highest
point on the course, sitting below the ever-present Coombe Hill monument.
Hole 9, 388 yards (Men) 348 yards (Ladies) par 4
The tee shot on this dog-leg right which closes the front nine must be well placed to allow access to tricky green placement, with a sloping approach and guarded by a bunker front left that seems to have magnetic properties.
Hole 10, 139 yards (Men) 129 yards (Ladies) par 4
A beautiful short downhill par 3 well protected by bunkers and with glorious views from the tee across the Oxford plain.
Hole 11, 305 yards (Men) 248 yards (Ladies) par 4
A reasonably short dog-leg right par-4 hole that requires a drive to avoid the bunker on the right apex while staying away from the woods and out-of-bounds
on the left. The reward for a good drive is a short shot into a green well-guarded by bunkers but which offers a birdie opportunity should the sand be avoided.
Hole 12, 523 yards (Men) 515 yards (Ladies) par 4
A gently curving left-right ‘snake’ par 5. Well-placed fairway bunkers for both the drive and second shot test the player’s accuracy. The long but narrow green is tricky.
Hole 13, 189 yards (Men) 165 yards (Ladies) par 4
This is a great mid-iron par 3 across a valley. The green is domed so a shot needs to be accurate to hold. Two deep bunkers guard the left-hand approach.
Hole 14, 408 yards (Men) 334 yards (Ladies) par 4
A well-bunkered dog-leg par 4 with excellent views towards the Chilterns and Monument. When the wind blows it
feels like a par 5, justifying its status as stroke index 1
Hole 15, 554 yards (Men) 467 yards (Ladies) par 4
A high tee provides for an excellent driving position for this par 5 which, at 555 yards, is the longest hole on the course. The fairway slopes left to right, so shots need to be accurate and long, especially when into the prevailing wind.
Hole 16, 126 yards (Men) 109 yards (Ladies) par 4
A classic short hole over a shrubfilled dell to a green well protected by bunkers – good opportunities for birdies and bogeys here.
Hole 17, 439 yards (Men) 376 yards (Ladies) par 4
Long for a par 4, and one of the most testing and satisfying holes on the course – a par here towards the end of the round feels like a real bonus.
Hole 18, 491 yards (Men) 413 yards (Ladies) par 4
A superb finishing par 5. An undulating fairway, with a cross bunker to catch the errant second shot, leads up to a green with subtle borrows to finish the round close by the clubhouse.

Mark offers coaching for all levels of player, covering all areas of the game. Ellesborough Golf Club is fortunate in having excellent practice facilities, including Chipping / Putting Greens and a substantial Range Area. Also, the nature of the chalk soil ensures good conditions all year round for both learning and playing Golf. We have a 3 bay covered area for lessons in poor weather conditions if required.

You can have it all here at Ellesborough, some expert tuition from our Professional, a superb course that throws up a new and different challenge each time you play it and the use of some outstanding practice facilities to work on any area of your game you are seeking to strengthen.
The practice ground, which stretches to around 250 yards in length, is situated between the 12th and 15th holes. Members bring their own balls and can hit off turf all year round and with flags and markers at 50-yard intervals focus can be brought to one’s practice. There is a covered area with artificial matting a little further back which is perfect in bad weather.
A pitching area for shots up to 150 yards can also be found in this part of the course, while improvements and additions to the layout have left us two marvellous facilities in the old 13th and 16th greens which can be used to hone bunker play, chipping and putting, on a surface as immaculately kept as the 18 greens on the course.
There is a large putting green Split into 2 Tiers. One for Putting and Lower Tier for Chipping in front of the Clubhouse and Three New practice nets to the right in the corner, perfect for warming up before taking to the course.

In 2010 the Club restructured the annual subscription fees to remove the joining fee and to ensure that its fees were very competitive with other quality Clubs.

Junior Boys (28 handicap or lower) are permitted to play in adult Medal/Stableford competitions after noon unless otherwise stated; Junior Girls may play in Ladies’ Day competitions.

There is a great deal of competitive golf enjoyed by the male members at Ellesborough, both against other Clubs in league and friendly play and within the Club itself in the form of Club competitions and trophies.
The men enjoy a monthly medal and monthly midweek medal and there are at least 40 handicap qualifying competitions a year for men.
Affiliated to the Berks, Bucks and Oxon Golf Partnership, Ellesborough has four teams, the A (or Scratch) team, the B team, Midweek team and the Elders team.
The Club’s Scratch team enters the Inter County Scratch Golf League, which features Clubs from Berks, Bucks, Oxon, Herts, Middlesex and Surrey. Competition is always keen, while always upholding the spirit of golf and fixtures are always followed by both teams enjoying a meal in the clubhouse.
While the Scratch League sees eight singles matches, pairs are the order of the day in the Shaw Gibbs Oxfordshire Foursomes League, in which Ellesborough also enters a team. Home and away matches are enjoyed against
the likes of Burford, Buckingham, Chipping Norton, Drayton Park, Frilford Heath and The Oxfordshire, with promotion and relegation at the end of the season.
There are also plenty of good golfers in the Ellesborough B team and the Midweek team and both groups enjoy a series of friendly fixtures spread through the golfing season. The only real difference between these two groups is that the former play at weekends and the latter during the week.

Ellesborough is the perfect place for juniors to learn the game of golf. The Club takes care of its youngsters, who we hope will become full members of the Club and represent Ellesborough with distinction in the future. Some of them are already doing so.
The Club hosts Have a Go sessions, which are free taster sessions to see if youngsters have an aptitude for the game. These employ plastic Tri Golf clubs, designed specifically for young children at primary and junior schools.
The Club’s professionals visit local schools to introduce children to the game under the Ellesborough banner.
Interested youngsters are then invited to the Club as a beginner to attend Saturday and Sunday group sessions in the holidays. In the summer, there are summer camps with coaching covering everything golf related and with the focus being on fun.
Once they have reached a certain standard, the Club has a Junior Academy membership for high handicap girls and boys to play on the course as long as they
are with an adult. They can also join in with Friday junior nights held at the Club in the summer where players of all ages and abilities take to the course.
Young golfers then progress to becoming a full junior member where they can enjoy full playing rights. The Club has a junior team which plays in the Junior Chiltern League and the associated Chiltern League Team Trophy one-day event.

Ellesborough has a very active Ladies section of around 100 ladies with a wide range of handicaps from single-figure to beginners from our Academy. On Tuesdays, Ladies morning, we have a mixture of Stablefords, Medals and fun competitions and regularly have 55 to 60 ladies playing.
There are some Saturday competitions, mainly in summer, including the Ladies Championships which are run over the weekend. Our special golf days are always popular, the Spring and Autumn
Meetings, Invitation Day, Ladies’ Captain’s Day, and Away Day being some of the highlights.
We enter teams in the summer and winter County Silver scratch leagues, the Bronze scratch league and The Bucks Shield as well as the National Annodata County knockout competitions. We also have a full calendar of friendly matches both home and away open to ladies of all handicaps.
Roll-ups are an enjoyable part of golf at Ellesborough and there are 18-hole Roll-Ups on Thursday and Saturday mornings and 9-hole Roll-Ups on Mondays and Fridays; the format is relaxed, and an excellent way for new members to get to know other ladies.
Many ladies enjoy playing in the Mixed golf events organised by the Club throughout the summer. The Bank Holidays Greensomes, mixed knockout and mixed matches against other Clubs are always well supported and enormously enjoyable days.
Ellesborough ladies are a very friendly group that offers golf for all levels of players, and it is always a pleasure to welcome new members to our vibrant and sociable section. We are committed to growing our numbers and welcome applications from all ages. Our “Buddy” system ensures new members are made to feel welcome and is a quick way of getting to know other members.

We offer two free trial rounds over a period of one month, to any girls or ladies, with an existing handicap, who are considering joining us, with the proviso that the rounds are played with a lady member.

In November 2023 Ellesborough Golf Club attained the Women in Golf Charter from England Golf. This is an initiative by the R&A and England Golf to promote Women and Girls to Play Golf. Therefore The Academy at Ellesborough Golf Club has been restructured with this in mind.
The Academy from 2024 is for Ladies who are just starting Golf who do not have a handicap and want to learn all the basics of the game to go forward and eventually join Ellesborough Golf Club.
As an academy member you will be entitled to the following:
• 6 x 30 minute individual lessons
• 1 x 9 hole playing lesson
• Use of the practice area, chipping green and putting green
• Free use of practice balls if you do not have your own
• Use of all Clubhouse facilities

Pathway to Golf: offers a blend of private tuition, group classes, and practice facilities. It includes:
An Academy sub-committee run by the Ladies’ section. Who will organise fun, group practice sessions for academy members, with fun drills and competitions. Appoint mentors, buddies who will take them on the course when they are ready to do so
Academy WhatsApp group. Academy members will be added to this group,
where information regarding the Academy will be shared.
An Academy Members progress is tracked by the Professional and assigned mentor. The mentor will be a current full member of the club and will assist in the process of understanding the club systems along with etiquette and golf rules. These integral partners will be on hand to guide the member through the scheme and to help understand the best time to move through the relevant stages.
This allows greater access to the course and the opportunity to further develop important aspects of a players ‘on-course’ skills.
Once you have attained the required standard you will be offered full membership to Ellesborough which is usually within two years of joining the academy.

Ellesborough Golf Club extends a warm welcome to our visitors. The course is playable all year round, and our excellent catering will complete an enjoyable day. We ask that our dress code and handicap rules are noted in order to ensure a pleasurable visit.
The Club operates a booking system for all competitions as well as Tuesday and Sunday mornings. Away from these times a two tee start is used on the 1st and 10th, separating two and four balls to ensure smooth progress of your round.
Ellesborough Golf Club is a traditional members’ Club, but one that seeks to move forward with the times. In recent years it has relaxed its dress code and regulations for using mobile phones/ PDAs.
To avoid any embarrassment, members, guests and visitors are requested to ensure that they comply with the detail and spirit of the dress code and mobile phone regulations set out in full on the Club’s website.
If you plan to participate in our Invitation or Open Days, or visit the Club for a round of golf, please present your England Golf membership number to the Professional on the day of your visit.
Ellesborough Golf Club welcomes societies and can provide a number of packages to ensure an enjoyable and successful day.
The Full Day option is the answer to every keen golfer’s prayers. It features coffee and bacon rolls on arrival, 18 holes of golf in the morning, a ploughman’s or pub lunch, another 18 holes of golf in the afternoon and a three-course meal to round off what we trust will be a splendid day.

The Bar, Lounge and Dining area facilities have been refurbished and the changing rooms have been upgraded to a high standard.
From the Lounge area you can enjoy the magnificent panoramic vista across the surrounding countryside, overlooking the Vale of Aylesbury and views towards the adjoining counties of Oxfordshire and Hertfordshire.
We have a large patio area with seating where Al Fresco dining can take place during the summer months. It is an idyllic spot to sit and relax with your favourite drink, socialising with friends, taking in the scenery or watching golfers taking their tee shots from the 10th.
The Clubhouse with “In House” catering is at the heart of the social scene, with Restaurant Nights, Live Music & Entertainment nights, and Interactive Dining Experiences.
There is an extensive Bar Snack menu available every day providing breakfasts, sandwiches, paninis, hot meals, daily specials or the “Ellesborough Toastie”. Traditional Sunday Lunches are held and these are always popular.
There is also a Halfway House after your first 9 holes, where drinks, sandwiches, and hot food can be purchased. The Clubhouse facilities can be hired out for members’ functions such as Birthday or Anniversary celebrations.

Ellesborough rightly prides itself as being a Club run for the benefit of its members and there is a spirit of togetherness that can be felt in the Clubhouse just as much as out on the course.
While there is nothing the membership likes more than spending several hours pitting their wits against the golfing test laid before them, they also are not averse to enjoying themselves off the course as well.
There is a lively and varied programme of Social events to be enjoyed throughout the year, Summer Hog Roast & Disco, Christmas Draw Night with Carol singing and New Year’s Eve Dinner Dance to name a few.

From the M25 clockwise - Leave the motorway at Junction 16 for the M40 westbound. Exit the M40 at Junction 2, taking the A355 to Beaconsfield/ Amersham/Slough. After about five miles take the A413 towards Aylesbury, exiting on to London Road just before you reach Wendover. Continue into the town until you reach the High Street, turning left into Pound Street and remain on this road for just over a mile and you will find the entrance to the Club on the right.
From the M25 anticlockwise - Exit the motorway at Junction 20, taking the
westbound on the Ellesborough Road and you will see the Club on your right after just over a mile.
From the South - Take the A4010 through Princes Risborough, turning right on to Ellesborough Road roughly two miles after passing through the town.
From the East - Take the A4129 or the B4009, or exit the M40 at Junction 6, and head for Princes Risborough before following the directions in From the South, above.
Public transport - The nearest railway station is Wendover, which is just over a mile or a five-minute taxi ride away.
