Ely City golf course is a 72 par 6279 yds (6537 yards off the white tees) Henry Cotton designed parkland course located on the outskirts of the city.
Opened in 1962 and extended to 18 holes in 1973, it provides a true test of golf for golfers of all abilities and with the growth of the many trees and the compact nature of the layout it demands straight driving and accurate iron play.
This traditional Members Club was founded in the early 1960’s by five local businessmen who were keen to see a golf club in the City.
Having acquired the site of an old prisoner of war camp and bought some available fields, a nine hole course was opened in April 1961.
This facility was enlarged to 18 holes in 1973 and the opening of the course on the 4th July 1973 saw a famous challenge match between the then “Open
History
Champion” Lee Trevino and top South African professional Hugh Baiocchi. Lee Trevino won the match with a score of 66 against a 67 by Baiocchi.
To Celebrate the Club’s 50th Anniversary, Club President Marjorie Miller has compiled a commemorative book, it tells of the foresight and commitment of 5 local businessmen who conceived the idea for the original 9-hole golf course. These men were Mr. Adams, owner of the Ely Laundry; Mr. Barwell an estate agent, Mr. Delmage, a stockbroker, Mr. Wallis who owned a
shop called Walbro and last but far from least Mr. Charles Young of Hall, Ennion and Young solicitors.
And so it was that in 1958, at a meeting in the Bell Hotel, 78 people attend to support the vision of the 5 Founder Members of Ely City Golf Club. Following this meeting money was raised and work began to clear the site of what once was a prisoner of war camp. The original 9-hole course was designed by Charles Young and took 2 years to create.
Golfers of all standards have enjoyed the facilities of Ely City Golf Club over the last 50 years and owe these men a great debt of thanks.
A program of continuous work to the course has seen many subtle but important changes to maintain conditions and the reputation of the course as one of the finest in East Anglia. A recently completed program of bunker refurbishments marks the latest improvements, adding new elements of risk and reward to shotmaking on many holes.
But above all, and true to the vision of camaraderie of its founding members, Ely City Golf Club takes great pride in being a friendly, welcoming Club to golfers of all ages and abilities. The club offers superb value visitor green fees as well as a variety of membership packages, including a social membership for nongolfers who would like to enjoy the great facilities and friendships.
The club held Jubilee celebrations across 2012, including a gala Dinner Dance in July, when over 240 guests enjoyed great food and great company on a special night celebrating 50 years of golf in the City of Ely.
Hole 1 - 391 yards - Par 4 | SI 9
A lovely opening hole. A good drive leaves a mid-iron to the green, but beware of the out of bounds on the left.
Hole 2 - 155 yards - Par 3 | SI 17
The clubs signature hole is a well-guarded par 3. Take plenty of club as all the trouble is short.
Course Tour
Hole 3 - 513 yards - Par 5 | SI 5
A long par 5 that can be reached with two big hits, but for most it’s a three-shot hole. Be careful of the water 80 yards short of the green.
Hole 4 - 488 yards - Par 5 | SI 13
A par 5 that requires an accurate tee shot to give you a chance to reach in two. The raised green makes you think about club selection on your approach shot.
Hole 5 - 465 yards - Par 4 | SI 1
One of the toughest par 4’s in East Anglia with a penalty area running all the way up the right side.
Hole 6 - 209 yards - Par 3 | SI 3
Strong par 3 over 200 yards, two bunkers and out of bounds all the way up the left adds to the holes difficulty.
Hole 7 - 291 yards - Par 4 | SI 15
A Short but clever par 4, a real risk and reward hole.
Hole 8 - 386 yards - Par 4 | SI 11
Gentle dogleg right, a good drive gives you a great view of the tricky two-tier green.
Hole 9 - 380 yards - Par 4 | SI 7
Back toward the clubhouse, a strong par 4 requiring a good drive to a narrow fairway leaves a mid-iron to a well-guarded green.
Hole 10 - 404 yards - Par 4 | SI 10
Par 4 which has a ditch at 280 yards off the tee, a good drive between the mounds leaves a mid-iron to the green.
Hole 11 - 367 yards - Par 4 | SI 6
Position off the tee is everything on this hole with a small water hazard at 290 yards, slightly blind second shot, with a stunning view of the Cathedral.
Hole 12 - 156 yards - Par 3 | SI 18
Beautiful little downhill par 3, plays a little shorter than it looks.
Hole 13 - 472 yards - Par 5 | SI 12
Great dogleg left par 5, risk the corner for an easier second shot, but out of bounds all up the left means accuracy is vital.
Hole 14 - 381 yards - Par 4 | SI 2
An excellent dogleg left par 4, a drive right of centre will give you a clear view for your second shot, take one more club when approaching this green.
Hole 15 - 177 yards - Par 3 | SI 14
Classic par 3, bunkers await to the right of the narrow green.
Hole 16 - 503 yards - Par 5 | SI 16
Par 5, a good drive over the crest leaves a tricky downhill lie for your second shot towards the well-guarded green.
Hole 17 - 375 yards - Par 4 | SI 4
Strong par 4, a good drive to the top of the hill gives a good view of the green club selection is essential for the large two-tier green.
Hole 18 - 424 yards - Par 4 | SI 8
A perfect par 4 finish, dogleg right, a tee shot down the left opens up the green but beware of the out of bounds left and right of the green.
