WELCOME
Inspiring, challenging and never ordinary. That is the course on the top of the Downs at Epsom Golf Club. Renowned for its testing, undulating greens, known for its stunning views over London and revered for the extraordinary friendliness of its members and staff.
The Downs form a natural topography for golf. Presenting a course as nature intended, full of character and challenging golfers to use a full repertoire of shots. The subsoil is chalk so drainage is fantastic and golf is often played at Epsom when other courses are closed.
History plays an important part at Epsom with its close links to one of the oldest racecourses in the world. The Downs have been a centre for recreation for centuries and no doubt golf has been played on the Downs even longer than the Club’s 128year history.
We have a healthy membership, we host one of the biggest Pro Am events in the South of England annually and, as a true members’ club, we go out of our way to ensure every visitor is made very welcome.
If you would like to play a round, bring guests or societies or join the Club, simply call us and experience our unique approach. For lovers of golf and its history Epsom is a club to visit and to enjoy for the traditional downland challenge it offers and to soak up the atmosphere of bygone days in the clubhouse. We look forward to welcoming you.
EPSOM GOLF CLUB | 5
HISTORY
The fact that Epsom Golf Club was officially formed following a Burn’s Night celebration nods to some cultural influences in its formation. In fact, the course began as two separate rudimentary golf courses.
6 | EPSOM GOLF CLUB
It is known that well before the formation of the Club, Dr Laidlaw Purves of the Royal Wimbledon Golf Club and Mr Richardson of Sutton ‘knocked a ball about’ upon the Downs. A Mr T.W. Lang lived close by and made the most of the rough and ready natural greens between the racing grandstand and the rifle butts playing with other ‘Wimbledonians’. The number of other local notaries joining them rapidly grew.
Further north another course was mapped out by the masters of Epsom College, which adjoins the Club, and began its life as the Royal Medical Benevolent College in 1851. Towards the end of 1888, encouraged by Mr Mackey, residents started to take up the game paying a small subscription to cover the costs of rolling and sweeping the first proper greens. A preliminary meeting was held at Bromley Hurst in Church Road, the home of Mr G.F.
Burgess, on January 25, 1889, which happens to be Burn’s Night, and perhaps nods to the influence of the founding Scottish members. It was resolved that a club be formed with an annual subscription of 10 shillings and 6 pence. The Lord of the Manor, Mr J.S. Strange, granted permission and Mr Alexander Patrick of Wimbledon was employed to lay out a course roughly combining the Master’s course and the one which had become known as ‘Lang’s’ course.
Arthur Jackson was appointed the first professional, soon to be replaced by Willie Dunn, who went on to great success in America. To begin with the clubhouse as such was a room next to The Hussar (which exists to this day as a corner shop). Very soon the Club moved to a bungalow owned by founding member John Nightingall. The fact that by 1893 the first purposebuilt clubhouse in Surrey was built, funded by the members, indicates that they must have been people of some substance.
J Hatchard-Smith, a celebrated London architect, already engaged by Lord Rosebery on his estate, was the designer. He was paid just one guinea for the privilege. That the founders were men of some means is further borne out by the fact that a founding Vice President was the Earl of Rosebery, later to become Prime Minister, and another Vice President was Sir Allen Sarle, Secretary of the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway.

HISTORY (continued)
The clubhouse, albeit with a number of improvements and extensions, remains as an architectural icon to this day. Typical of the recreational trends of ‘gentlemen’ in the Edwardian period, an extension was built to house the snooker table. To enter the snooker auditorium, for that is what it is, is to take a step back in time. The Victorian snooker table, the wooden panels that adorn the room, the ancient scoreboard, the pictures of the Club Captains representing more than a century all conspire to create an ambience which exudes history. Only the billows
of cigar and cigarette smoke, that would surely have immersed the room in the early days, are missing now. Many stories exist about the Club. For instance there was the time that the Artisans were reprimanded by the Club for using parts of their own shack as fire wood just to keep warm. As you would expect of a club so steeped in history it has had some wonderful visitors. Four Open champions – Harry Vardon, James Braid, J.H. Taylor and Sandy Herd – have pitted their wits against this deceptively difficult golf course.
The story goes that when Vardon put on an exhibition match the club collection was short for his fee and the hat had to be sent round a second time. In the year he won the Open (1902), Herd took 10 strokes on our 18th – a signature hole and one which has changed little since that time. His ball lodged in the hedge which straddled the 18th hole – which is perhaps why today a gap exists for the ball to travel through.

The Course
For any golfer, Epsom offers an unusual challenge. Though not overly-long by today’s standards at 5,780 yards from the white tees, do not let that tempt you into thinking that Epsom is a pushover. Far from it. The course comprises a wide variety of traditional downland holes that offer a unique and intriguing challenge to golfers because no two holes are alike. From some tees the hole seems tight through trees whereas others seem more open but the undulating fairways and greens ensure that good concentration and application are required. Many say
that the course at Epsom is a great leveller because guile and skill replace the ability to drive balls a long way as on many modern courses. Here the emphasis is on brains rather than brawn, with accuracy rewarded more than distance and the ability to put one’s ball in the optimum position one of the keys to success. Nowhere is this more applicable than when it comes to the approach shot, because it is Epsom’s greens that are legend. Consistent and very true, they offer a very demanding test because of their mixture of surprising speed and undulation.
Only the 18th green can boast to be level and it is also the only hole at Epsom to feature bunkers. Getting the wrong side of a fiendishlyplaced flag can cause consternation and cost several shots and many return for another crack believing the knowledge they accrued on their previous visit gives them every chance of besting our course second time around. Beware. It could turn into a lifelong pursuit which may result in you becoming our newest member!
EPSOM GOLF CLUB | 11
Take the Course Tour
Prepare for your visit to Epsom by familiarising yourself with each hole over the coming pages and make the most of your round with our hole-by-hole guide. You can prepare yourself for the challenges that await, as well as pick up some invaluable playing tips from our Head Professional, Stuart Walker. Hole 1, 329 yards, par 4 Slightly uphill with trees either side to a large undulating green where a three-putt is a common occurrence. Hole 2, 371 yards, par 4 An accurate drive is required to set up the opportunity of a mid iron shot across the valley to the two-tiered green.
12 | EPSOM GOLF CLUB
Hole 3, 192 yards, par 3 This enormous undulating green is an Epsom feature but first you have to negotiate the trees on the right and the heavy rough to the left.
Hole 6, 443 yards, par 4 A long drive down towards the valley will leave you with a difficult shot up the hill to the tiered green which can deceive the best putters.
Hole 4, 259 yards, par 4 By stroke index, one of the easiest holes on the course, but beware, the ball tends to run to the right towards trees.
Hole 7, 378 yards, par 4 A dog-leg left where only the straightest of drives will avoid trees to both sides. The ideal line cuts the corner.
Hole 5, 423 yards, par 4 A long but open hole towards the highest part of the course where the wind is inevitably at its strongest.
Hole 8, 254 yards, par 4 A short hole but through the narrowest of gaps. For many, an iron shot is the best option to avoid the trees on the right.
Hole 9, 312 yards, par 4 A sweeping-right hand dog-leg requiring caution. The tree standing guard on the right front of the green captures many a stray ball.
Hole 13, 137 yards, par 3 A very hard green to hit with trees sheltering on the right and a tendency for the ball to roll to the left.
Hole 16, 292 yards, par 4 Light relief after the previous hole. An enchanting hole straight down the valley and reachable from the tee by many.
Hole 10, 293 yards, par 4 Another tee shot through a gap to an ample fairway and a relatively easy shot to the green. The highest point of the course.
Hole 14, 357 yards, par 4 The fairway sweeps over a ridge then runs gently downhill and to the right. It is essential that you put your ball below the flag on this difficult sloping green.
Hole 17, 125 yards, par 3 Do not be fooled by this postage-stamp hole. From a raised tee to a deceptive green that induces many a three-putt.
Hole 11, 462 yards, par 5 Out of bounds to the left and trees all along the right towards a tiered green. Hole 12, 193 yards, par 3 A difficult tee shot through the funnel of trees to another large undulating green.
Hole 15, 520 yards, par 5 Stroke Index 2 for good reason. A good tee shot hugging the left corner of the corridor of trees will set up a long second towards this testing green.
Hole 18, 440 yards, par 4 The ideal shot cuts the left-hand corner but needs to be long to give a straight hit into the green. Note the bunkers to both sides.

your golf swing and feature range work, practice drills and instruction on how to sharpen up the short game. Computer analysis is available with the popular V1 Golf software, which enables the learner golfer to compare their own swing against those of the tour professionals and see where they may be going wrong. On-course playing lessons are a great way to learn how to play the right shots at the right time. Our professionals will demonstrate the techniques and show you how and when to play them. They will also give pointers on how to develop the
correct mental approach and give valuable advice on course management and how to improve it in order to cut down on those wasted shots that affect most recreational golfers during the course of a round. In addition, there are several options available to those wishing to take up the game or to improvers looking to lower their scores. Beginner Package This 10-lesson package will take new golfers through all the shots they need to start playing the game of golf. The
lessons cover basics such as aim, grip, stance, through the full swing, to short game skills such as bunker play and putting and finishes with tuition on the course. The lessons do not have to be taken week by week; they can be booked to suit the golfer’s diary. Half Day Improvement Course Aimed at golfers that can already play the game, this halfday package is designed to pin-point areas of improvement in all aspects of the game – long game,
short game, iron play and on-course. The package includes lunch and drinks. Players will be encouraged to communicate with the coach and give feedback into areas that they will have chosen to work on. Learn to Play - In a Day This intensive course is designed for those completely new to golf and who are keen to learn all areas of the game in just one day. The package will take golfers from the basics of holding a club, all the way through to playing a full hole at the
end of the day. The package includes refreshments, lunch, drinks and a golf glove for all taking part. EPSOM GOLF CLUB | 21
Flexible Membership
Flexible Membership is designed to suit the modern lifestyles of those whose working and family life leaves them with little time to play golf and who cannot justify the full subscription. It is also an ideal membership for those trying golf for the first time and do not wish to commit to the expense of a full cost subscription.
22 | EPSOM GOLF CLUB
Flexible membership will give golfers the full range of facilities and experiences available only to members of Epsom Golf Club. It is a membership for those who want to be fully involved with their Golf Club, friendly games at the weekend, competition golf*, or a relaxing 9 holes at the end of the day followed by a drink with like-minded people. No longer need they be outcasts paying the odd green fee. They can come to Epsom Golf Club as members with the privileges of official handicaps, access to and the support of their Club, and a social life.
A Flexible member receives a swipe card containing their golf credits. The card will be topped up with 365 credits when they make their first annual payment of ÂŁ390 (includes all affiliations and insurances). Each time they play a number of credits are deducted according to the time of day and day of the week. Members running low on credits can top-up a maximum of twice at ÂŁ100 each time for a total of 200 extra credits and keep on playing.
The number of rounds that can be played with Flexible membership depends on when they are played. For example, the 365 credits gives 12 rounds of golf when playing at peak times during the weekend. Playing on midweek afternoons results in the opportunity to play nearly 18 rounds. Topping up gives even more golf with a maximum of 18 rounds of weekend morning golf or 28 rounds of weekday afternoon golf.
The membership card must be swiped in the Pro Shop or Bar every time a round is played. The Club’s software keeps a realtime record of the credits used. Unused credits remain valid for a further year only when membership is renewed. The membership card can also be loaded separately with cash to pay for food and drink in the Clubhouse. Members are then entitled to a discount on drink (15%) and food (10%) from the menu.
EPSOM GOLF CLUB | 23
Buddy Membership
New and existing members of Epsom Golf Club can halve their annual subscription – just by introducing a Buddy. And the half price subscription could continue every year thereafter by members introducing a succession of new Buddies.
24 | EPSOM GOLF CLUB
New members are encouraged to join as a pair. When you have a Buddy you are more likely to fully join in with the Club’s extensive golfing activities and social life. As members they will be able to enjoy to the full the warmth of Epsom Golf Club’s friendly clubhouse, well supported functions and wide range of both serious and fun golf competitions for singles and partners alike.
Full membership costs for 2017 are £1,375 while Five-day membership is £1,175. Buddy membership brings these high costs down to a realistic £687.50 or £587.50. Younger golfers are also catered for. Their Buddy subscriptions range from £162.5 for those under 23, up to £325 24-29 and £415 for those under 35.
When joining after the normal subscription year start of 1st April, new Buddy members will still enjoy 12 month’s membership before receiving their next renewal notice. If they have not found another Buddy then their subscription will be pro rata’d to 31st March. If they do introduce another Buddy then they will enjoy a further 12 months of reduced cost membership with all the benefits of a Full member, except a buddy does not have the right to vote at any General Meeting of the Club.
There is no entry fee and the only additional fees all members pay is a £125 Club Card Levy which can be used for discounted food and drink and social event tickets, etc. and their Affiliation Fee to the national and local Golfing authorities.

Pro Am and Open Competitions
Epsom hosts one of the biggest Pro Am events in the South East under the auspices of the PGA, with more than 40 teams taking to the course in the all-day event which is held in either May or June. Sponsored teams are welcome with their own golf professional or the PGA can allocate a pro to a team. Generally speaking the allocated professionals are taken from the top end of the PGA South Region’s Order of Merit table. The day includes 18 holes of golf in teams of four including a professional, with the
best two scores counting on each hole. Food is provided in the package. The 32nd Epsom Golf Club Pro-Am held in June 2011 was a particularly memorable one for Club Captain and host Declan O’Brien, because his team went on to win the event! In addition, we hold a number of popular Open Days when visitors from other clubs with a recognised handicap are welcome to play the course as individuals or in teams of two.
These Open Days include a meal and are very social as well as golfing occasions, with prizes on offer to the winners. May sees us host two events on separate days, the Ladies’ Open and the Men’s Open. There is a Mixed Open generally held at the end of July and in early October there is the Senior’s Open. For more details and exact dates, call the Pro Shop on 01372 741867 or visit our website.

Junior Coaching
Epsom is an outstanding choice for parents looking to instil in their children a passion for the great game of golf. We have an outstanding junior section, backed up by a programme of organised events and coaching by staff who rightly see the youngsters as the future pillars of our great golf club and who will continue its fine traditions. Epsom was the first Club in Southern England to be awarded the prestigious English Golf Partnership award of the GolfMark for excellence in developing and conducting its Junior Section. This was complemented the following year
when the Club was the first in the country to be awarded the ClubMark by Sport England. In 2007, we were awarded the GolfMark ‘High Achiever’ Gold Star, once again being the very first golf club in the country to receive it! The awards recognise Epsom’s comprehensive and coherent Child Protection policies and practices, as well as the quality of the coaching programme. This is conducted by a team of trained Junior Leaders who assist the club’s professional.
ages of 6 and 12. Lessons, available to non club members, run on Saturday and Sunday mornings for one hour. Visitors
If there is one thing all visitors to Epsom agree on – it is the friendliness of the club. The Pro Shop, the staff in the clubhouse and the members want nothing more than for you to enjoy your visit and to come back and see us again. Visitors are welcome to play the course whenever it is not being used by members for competitions or organised events or by golfing societies. As a members’ club there are some times which are set aside for members and we regret we cannot take bookings on weekends and Tuesdays before noon, and Wednesdays before 9.15 am.
It is advisable to book in advance, either by calling the Pro Shop on 01372 741867 or by using the automated booking-in service available via our website, www.epsomgolfclub.co.uk Although the club has standard green fee rates for weekdays and weekends, we offer significant savings for certain times of the day, particularly if you are prepared to avoid the busiest times, or if you book at the last minute. The price quoted is the price you pay. There is no booking fee.
With our automated booking system it is easy to identify the times when reduced price green fees are available and after making your payment you get instant onscreen and e-mail confirmation of your booking. If you would like to book golf clubs, trolleys, food in advance, etc you should enter these requirements in the booking form or alternatively you can contact the Club directly by phone on 01372 721666.

Clubhouse
Epsom’s was the first purpose-built clubhouse in Surrey, completed in 1893 – only four years after the Club was founded. Within ten years the snooker auditorium was added and since then the clubhouse has been extended and improved.
Everyone is welcome to make use of the Clubhouse Lounge and bar. The main bar is a popular meeting place for some relaxation and refreshment after a round of golf. Hot and cold food is served on most days. The main bar leads out to the patio area overlooking the 18th green.
Visitors and members get the best of both worlds – the chance to experience relaxing in an historic building which is full of character, yet one which has kept up with the times and boasts the latest facilities one has grown to expect, such as internet access.
The main upstairs beamed dining room is used for major functions and hosts our regular Sunday lunches, which are a particular highlight. The varied menu they offer has a wide range of snacks and main courses options, with even more choice on the daily specials board.
One of the most popular additions has been the Epsom burger, which is already the stuff of local legend. Even if you do not play snooker yourself, you should go take a look at the room to experience its unique atmosphere as well as the pictures of the old Club Captains who stare down at you from the walls. Our iconic snooker auditorium was completed in 1913 and to enter the room is to take a step back in time. The snooker table, which still rolls as truly as the greens for which Epsom is renowned, is thought to be nearly 200 years old.

40 | EPSOM GOLF CLUB
There are three sit-down menu choices featuring the likes of roasted rump of lamb, gratin dauphinois, red wine and rosemary jus, medallions of beef fillet, fondant potato and sauce Diane or panfried skate wing, saffron potatoes and caper beurre noisette.
Equally, if you are looking a buffet menu to satisfy your evening guests, ours is guaranteed to please, with Chinesestyle marinated chicken, BBQ baby back ribs, a selection of Greek dips with warm pitta bread and penne pasta salad with mozzarella, tomato and basil among the dishes on offer. Our packages are just a guide and we are open to any suggestions and can even offer a themed package, for instance if the bride and groom had fish and chips when they first met and they want that on their big day it is not a problem. We are here to please!
In general we can cater for up to 64 people seated in the dining room and up to 20 in the committee room. Below you will find details of the rooms available for you to hire for your function. Main function room This upstairs room with its view over the course and the 18th green, and its traditional wooden dĂŠcor adds a degree of timeless quality to any event. The room doubles as a meeting room allowing an audience of up to 80 people to comfortably view presentations and can
seat the same number for eating using round or angular table formats. Committee room This room on the ground floor is a very popular business meeting room as it provides the ambience of a traditional company boardroom. It will take up to 20 people comfortably, and is often used as a flexible venue for a smaller meeting with buffet food or with the eating taking place in the main lounge.
Main Lounge The main lounge is available to guests attending the Club for functions but not usually on an exclusive basis as this is the main social room for club members. The lounge can sometimes be booked on an exclusive basis by prior agreement. In many cases people using the meeting rooms for functions will share the bar with club members or remain in their meeting room using waitress service. To book any of the Club’s facilities or to arrange for a tour of the premises, call the office on 01372 721666.

Social Activities
If you are new to our club or paying us a visit for the first time, one of the first things you will notice about Epsom is how friendly the members are.
are catered for, so hopefully there is something to appeal to everyone.
This camaraderie extends off the course as well as on it, and aside from golfing there is nothing our members would rather be doing than spending time enjoying each other’s company and making the most of the magnificent facilities at their disposal.
One of the most popular dates in the calendar has proved to be the tribute acts invited to the club once or twice a year. Members enjoy a meal in the lounge bar, then join the entertainer in a speciallyerected marquee on the patio to dance the night away. Songs from Rod Stewart, Elvis and Michael Buble have all been covered in recent times.
Epsom boasts its own entertainment committee who do a wonderful job of organising numerous events throughout the year. A wide range of interests
There is also entertainment from a live band to accompany the black-tie Summer Ball, a lovely evening with champagne and canapés and a four-course dinner.
Our geographical location means it would simply be wrong not to celebrate Derby Day in style, so we do: with a banquet followed by watching the afternoon’s action on big television screens in the clubhouse. Sumptuous Sunday lunches, a Santa’s grotto for the children followed by carol singing at Christmas, quiz nights, regular bridge nights and competitions through the winter in our incredible snooker room are just some of the many other social activities on offer.
