Example Page 01 Welcome Farnham Golf Club in Surrey was founded in 1896. Located in the village of The Sands, on the outskirts of the town from which it takes its name, it is a gem amongst Surrey golf courses. A majestic mix of parkland, pine and heather with gentlerolling undulations, the 6,613-yard 18-hole layout provides a constant challenge for golfers of all ages and abilities and, because it drains so well, is playable throughout the year. As a members’ club we are able to offer both competitive and social golf to all standards of player, from beginner to scratch golfer. We are a frequent and favourite destination for visitors and societies who find the combination of great golf, fine food and superior service too good to resist. Our friendly Pro Shop staff are on hand to advise you with your buying decisions and provide lessons to help you improve
every area of your game, backed up by arguably the best practice facilities in the south of England. If you are looking to take up golf for the first time you could not have picked a better club, as we offer attractive academy packages to both adults and juniors. History Farnham Golf Club was founded in 1896 following a meeting of 17 Victorian gentlemen joined in the common bond of a love for the game. Successful discussions took place with Mr A.H. Stevens, the owner of Binton Farm, and it was here that our club was born. The course, initially of nine holes, was extended to 18 holes in 1904, with Open champion Jack White assisting in the lay-out. White, together with James Braid, Harry Vardon and Vardon’s brother Tom, played an exhibition match to celebrate the official opening of the new course in 1905. Harry Vardon and Braid were two members of the “Great Triumverate” who, along with J.H. Taylor, won 16 Open titles between 1894 and 1914.

At Farnham the ladies had played since the founding days, but it was not until 1906 that they received official recognition, with Miss Eveline Faithfull being elected their first captain. The Great War had a significant effect on our club, as it did many others. A number of holes were given over to food production to help the war effort, with disastrous financial consequences. The club was wound up shortly after the war and an auction took place for all its assets. However diehard members refused to give up the fight and by 1922 a nine-hole course was in regular use. Farnham Golf Club was formed again the following year and less than 12 months after that a full 18 holes were once more in operation.
Though in the same geographical location, it is generally agreed that the new course is a much more interesting test than its predecessor, so those early struggles may, in fact, have turned out to be a blessing. World War Two brought further upheaval, with part of the course again being given up as part of the wartime agricultural policy. It reopened in 1953 with another famous exhibition match featuring, among others, British Ryder Cup player Peter Alliss and Bobby Locke, the legendary South African who visited Farnham on countless occasions. Locke’s compatriot, Gary Player, was another familiar face to Farnham members. In 1952, Farnham’s own Elizabeth Price played a key role in helping Great Britain and Ireland wrest the Curtis Cup from the USA for the first time. Elizabeth is arguably one of the two finest of many fine golfers to come
out of the club, the other being Roger Revell. Among Roger’s notable achievements were winning the Brabazon Trophy in 1973, reaching the final of the English Amateur Matchplay Championship in 1972 and that same year qualifying for the Open Championship at Muirfield. Perhaps the most momentous event in the club’s history came in 1968, when the owner of the land agreed to sell it to the club for £34,000. Farnham’s future was secure. The great storm of October 1987 wreaked extensive damage across the course, but the club recovered, as it had done after the two world wars. We celebrated our centenary in 1996 and, now well into a second century, the club continues to go from strength to strength.

Example The Course Page 01 The course is a combination of parkland and heath land, and combines a beautifully peaceful environment with some stunning views. Starting in parkland the scenery changes after the 5th as the pines close in and the heather replaces the grass. By the 11th, the vista opens again with views over the farmland to the Hog’s Back. The gentle undulations give variety but do not demand excessive effort. The course is noted for its superb drainage which makes play possible for 52 weeks of the year. The course measures 6,613 yards, par 72 for the men off the championship tees, 6,268 yards off the visitors’ yellow tees and 5,839 yards, also par 72, for the ladies.
It has a good mixture of testing par 3s and while the par 5s on any course are looked upon by the better players as offering the chance to pick up shots, it is worth noting that two of ours are rated among the three toughest holes on the course in terms of stroke index. Arguably the best holes, however, are the strong par 4s. Of these there are many, but to pick out just two: the scenic 12th from an elevated tee offers magnificent views of the surrounding area and the exhilarating golfing test that is the 17th would not be out of place on any championship course. The course is never anything but fair and offers an enjoyable test for any level of golfer.

Make the most of your trip by learning about some of the pitfalls that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you follow our course tour courtesy of Rob Colborne, our PGA professional. Hole 1, par 5, 510 yards The right-hand side of the fairway is favourable, it will open up the second shot through the trees. Hole 2, par 4, 474 yards You need a good drive on the line of the big oak tree. A good second toward the marker should you leave a short approach.
Hole 3, par 3, 184 yards Take care to check the wind direction as the ball is affected when it gets above the tree line. Hole 4, par 4, 269 yards The green is in range here. If you are playing safe keep to the left of the fairway to avoid the bunkers. Hole 5, par 4, 374 yards Try one more club that you think here to get the ball up to the elevated green. Hole 6, par 3, 183 yards The green can be very tricky to read here so take extra care when lining up those putts.

Hole 12, par 4, 404 yards Out of bounds down the right! This is a long green so the pin position will affect your club selection.

Hole 14, par 5, 551 yards You can aim just left of the marker here as anything right can get blocked out.
Hole 17, par 4, 430 yards A tough hole and there is out of bounds down the right, so be careful not to try and force your tee shot.
Hole 15, par 3, 208 yards The bunker to the right of the green is quite severe so try to keep the ball to the left side.
Hole 18, par 5, 500 yards You must play your second shot towards the clubhouse clock and let the contours do the rest.

This service costs less than you think and can bring about a dramatic improvement in ball striking. At Farnham we are custom fit specialists and are an authorised dealer for Ping clubs and their world-renowned fitting service. We utilise our professional skills and fantastic practice facilities to determine your correct specifications. We also have a repairs workshop and are fully equipped to carry out all types of repairs and club adjustments. All work is carried out by the Professional staff, who are experts in reshafting, re-gripping and altering
the loft and lie of irons and wedges as required. We also have a shoe re-spiking service and carry out minor repairs on electric trolleys. There are also electric and pull trolleys for hire at low rates. You will be assured of a warm welcome so please don’t hesitate to contact us by telephoning or by filling in and sending the enquiry form on our website. There is a one-off joining fee and payment can be spread over 12 to 24 months if required. The seven-day individual membership is by far the most popular at Farnham, allowing unlimited use of the course and the opportunity to play in the many annual competitions. There is a five-day option which
affords the same benefits from Monday to Friday but precludes entry to competitions held at weekends. Weekday members can, however, play after 3pm at weekends at a discounted rate up to six times a year. All Farnham Golf Club members are able to take advantage of special reciprocal arrangements we have offering the chance to play golf on some of the area’s other outstanding courses at greatly reduced rates. Subject to availability, reciprocal golf is offered with eight other clubs (must be arranged through the club and conditions apply), while Farnham’s affiliation to the Hog’s Back Alliance allows a fourball to play four other courses – Army, Bramley, Guildford and Puttenham – for just £50.

It is also worth noting that transitional members, as well as juniors, do not have to pay an entrance fee. Example Page Academy Membership 01 It is easy to be inspired by watching the game’s leading professionals on television contesting Major championships or the Ryder Cup and feel that golf could be the game for you. But traditional golf clubs can appear to be somewhat daunting places to the uninitiated and it is not always easy to know what to do to take the first step. Fear not! For a vastly reduced initial Academy Membership fee you can learn the game (including rules and etiquette) with regular lessons with our PGA teaching professionals, use the outstanding practice facilities and, when you are sufficiently competent and confident, play golf (off peak) at one of the best courses in Surrey 12 times a year. There are special competitions for members and you also get to use the clubhouse facilities as well. Example Page Members’ Golf 01 Farnham’s men’s, ladies and junior sections offer a full competition fixtures schedule aimed at players of all standards. We also compete in many inter-club matches and friendly events.
The ladies also have an extensive range of trophies to compete for throughout the year with all formats enjoyed: singles, pairs, stablefords, medals and knockouts.
The men enter teams into the Hogs Back and District League, featuring matches against six other neighbouring clubs and the Border League, a scratch league consisting of eight clubs near the Hampshire/Surrey border. There is even winter team golf in the shape of the Surrey & West Sussex Winter League which features pairs competition.
They also are keen supporters of county events and enter the Pearson Trophy each year, a team event played in a group format over the winter followed by a knockout phase with the eventual winners going on to represent Surrey against the champions from Hertfordshire, Kent and Middlesex.
Within the club itself, there are a host of cups and honours board competitions played for on an annual basis, the majority of which date back many decades. Perhaps the most prestigious is the Fletcher Bowl/ Club Championship, which goes to the winner of a 36-hole medal competition and recognises the year’s outstanding golfer.

Example Page 01 Juniors Farnham has an active junior section and we are always keen to encourage new young members. There is a full fixtures calendar including league and friendly matches and the opportunity to join regular coaching programmes organised by our professional team. Now is a particularly good time to join as the club has only recently launched a junior academy, which gives young golfers a firm foundation of all the basic skills required to set them on their way to what we hope will be a lifelong love of the game. Academy membership works out at less than £2 a week and features regular coaching sessions on Saturdays and Sundays as well as access to competitions. Both genders are equally welcome and it has been
encouraging to see an influx of keen girl players into the club. These players will continue their development and eventually progress to play in the county’s highly-regarded Surrey Rookie League and accompanying Rookie Tour. Ultimately, of course, the hope is for them to become the next generation of golfers to represent Farnham Golf Club with honour and distinction. Example Open Competitions Page 01 Farnham is an historic golf club with a rich heritage dating back to the founding of our club in 1896. We know we have something special here and nothing gives us greater pleasure than to share the enjoyment of our magnificent course with people who may not have experienced it before.
Our most prestigious trophy is called The Silver Frigate, which is Farnham’s main Open for men. This event, for players with a handicap of 12 or below, was first played in 1934. It is a qualifying event for the Surrey County Golf Union’s Order of Merit and is always oversubscribed.
One of the ways in which we can do this is by staging a number of open competitions throughout the year aimed at golfers from all walks of life and all abilities.
Other events are held for senior golfers, for golfers aged 35 and over and juniors, while the ladies can look forward to three events in most years. The formats might change slightly from year to year, but you can always find full details of upcoming events on our website, together with information about how you can reserve your place.
From beginner to scratch golfer and from junior to senior, there’s an event to give you a chance to take part.

Follow the signs to The Sands, you will find the club situated at the junction of Sands Road and Blighton Lane. For those with SatNav our postcode is GU10 1PX. From Farnham on the A31 Take the A31 to Guildford from the Shepherd and Flock roundabout. After a quarter of a mile leave the A31 signposted to Runfold, follow the road to the T-junction, turning right to The Sands. After 200 yards turn left into Crooksbury Road, signposted to The Sands. Follow the road and after half a mile take the first left signposted to The Sands and Farnham Golf Club. After three quarters of a mile you will approach the club on your left, with the visitors’ car park situated just past the clubhouse.
From London on the A3 Bypassing Guildford, leave the A3 at the A31 Farnham junction. Follow the A31 for about 6 miles, taking the 2nd junction signposted Seale, Tongham and Runfold. At the T-junction turn left to Seale, and after half a mile turn right into Seale Lane. Follow the road for 1 mile taking the 2nd left into Blighton Lane. This will bring you to Farnham Golf Club with the visitors’ car park immediately to your left at the T-junction. By Train The nearest mainline station is Farnham. Taxis are available - 10 minute journey.
