WELCOME

Fynn Valley Golf Club is a friendly, vibrant club which nonetheless takes golf seriously too. A beautiful parkland course running parallel with the Fynn Valley (one of Suffolk’s protected valleys) in the village of Witnesham, just north of Ipswich, it is a place where members and visitors alike may enjoy the extensive golfing facilities as well as fine food and social activities. Facilities include the mature 18-hole course, a par three 9-hole course, 22-bay f loodlit covered golf range and practice greens and bunkers. Golf tuition is available with two golf shops to supply every golfing need, as well as the extensive clubhouse and catering facilities set in a range of converted Edwardian farm buildings. Taking advantage of the excellent dining facilities makes Fynn Valley ideal for golf societies, conferences, weddings and functions – all a speciality for the Club’s capable team.

Only a couple of miles from the County town of Ipswich, Fynn Valley is easily accessible from Felixstowe, Woodbridge, Framlingham and Stowmarket, with Colchester and Bury St Edmunds only half an hour away. Forward thinking and friendly, Fynn Valley also presents a serious challenge to the committed golfer. East Anglia has many great golf courses - you will find a great welcome at Fynn Valley. Fynn Valley Holidays have three five star gold accredited luxury lodges on site, each with their own private sauna and hot tub. Why not book a relaxing break at Fynn Valley? Ipswich Croquet Club is based at Fynn Valley and they welcome visitors to their two lawns to learn more about the game and Club..

THE MAIN COURSE

The main 18-hole course at Fynn Valley measures 6,391 yards from the white tees with a par of 70 and a standard scratch score of 72 a testimony to the challenge offered when playing from the back tees. From the yellow tees the course measures 5,896 yards and is ideal for friendly and social golf. For the ladies, played from the red tees the course measures 5,436 yards with a par of 71 and standard scratch the same. A parkland course with a wide variety of planting, with treelined fairways, contoured greens and strategically placed bunkers, the course is picturesque with a bite!

Except in the most exceptional conditions, the course remains free draining and temporary greens and tees are never used. Fynn Valley is noted for the quality of the par three holes with the 14th and 17th requiring the greatest skills and the short 6th needing delicacy and judgement. Developed from 1990 onwards, the course has now fully matured and has hosted regional and county championships on many occasions and stages the final Masters event of the Suffolk Order of Merit season in late autumn each year. Enjoyable golf, enjoyable scenery, enjoyable company!

COWSLIP COURSE

The Cowslip Course is an exciting shorter course layout using Fynn Valley’s existing Main Course. The yardage of the course is 4,261 (holes 1-9 measure 1,986 yards and holes 10-18 are 2,275 yards), with a par of 71. The idea is to provide a ‘stepping stone’ for intermediate golfers to move up from the nine-hole Par Three Course to the Main Course.

Each hole on the course has a dedicated Cowslip tee, placed nearer to the hole than the usual tees, making the course easier to play. If you think you would prefer to join the Cowslip Course or have any questions, please do not hesitate to speak to a member of staff or contact the office on 01473 785267 (Option 0).

THE PAR THREE COURSE

The nine-hole Par Three Course measures 957 yards. There is no dress code and club hire is available.

In addition, there is also a Par Three Membership which allows unlimited free use of the nine-hole course and discounts on balls at the golf range.

This course is ideal for beginners, juniors and those wishing to practise their short game. Maintained to a high standard with bunkers and natural hazards, it provides a good test of golf for everyone.

The Par Three Course has grass tees, not artificial and the greens are excellent! Open from 9am until dusk, all ages and abilities are welcome.

A round on the nine-hole course only takes around one hour, so it also a great option for those short on time. Green fees for the Par Three Course are purchased at the golf range, which is also the place to go for club hire.

TAKE THE COURSE TOUR

Prepare for your visit to Fynn Valley by familiarising yourself with each hole over the coming pages and make the most of your round with our hole-by-hole guide. You can prepare yourself for the challenges that await, as well as pick up some invaluable playing tips from our club professional. Hole 1, 325 yards, par 4 A dog-leg right which requires a mid to long iron from the tee aimed between the bunkers. This leaves a short to mid iron across the water to the green which is protected on the left by water and the right by out of bounds. Tip: “Aim for the centre of the green with the approach.” Hole 2, 175 yards, par 3 Probably the most straightforward of the par 3 holes: a mid to long iron avoiding the bunkers that surround the green. Tip: “Aim just left of right-hand greenside bunker.”

12 www.fynn-valley.co.uk

Hole 3, 407 yards, par 4 Usually played into the wind and uphill, this hole plays much longer than it suggests. A tee shot towards the marker post will leave a long second to a green which is protected on both sides by large bunkers and the pond beyond. Tip: “An approach played for the front left of the green pays dividends.” Hole 4, 420 yards, par 4 A tough par 4 when played from the white tees, a tee shot avoiding the out of bounds on the left will leave a long second shot to the green which must miss the two bunkers which are short and right. Tip: “Aim for the left edge of green and watch the ball bounce to the right.”

Hole 5, 462 yards, par 4 Short hitters are advised to aim left, keeping away from the out of bounds along the corner of this sharp dog-leg right. The approach to the green must avoid a bunker at the right of the green. Tip: “It is best to come in from the left side of the fairway to help avoid the bunker.”

Hole 8, 150 yards, par 3 One of the hardest holes to par on the course. Looks straightforward from the tee, but the green slopes severely from right to left, with three-putting commonplace and four-putting a possibility. Tip: “The tee-shot must be short and left of the flag.”

Hole 6, 146 yards, par 3 This re-designed downhill par 3 is played from an elevated tee. Two large bunkers short of the green and one to the right make an accurate shot important. Tip: “Be bold, a well hit shot will hold the green.”

Hole 9, 528 yards, par 5 An uphill dog-leg to the right. The second shot is played over the brow of the hill, and best played slightly left to avoid the big bunker 100 yards short of the green. Tip: “This leaves a simple approach to a huge double green shared with the 18th.”

Hole 7, 372 yards, par 4 A dog-leg right. The tee shot should be aimed towards the left-hand bunker on top of the hill. The bunker is around 230 yards from the tee, so long hitters need to club down accordingly and would be well advised not to try to cut the corner off the tee. Tip: “The approach to the green plays longer than it looks, so be bold.”

Hole 10, 400 yards, par 4 This hole is normally into the wind and requires two good hits to reach the green. A drive down the left avoids sand and gives a good angle to the green. Tip: “Take enough club for the approach as anything short will be claimed by the front bunkers.”

www.fynn-valley.co.uk 13

TAKE THE COURSE TOUR CONTINUED

Hole 11, 515 yards, par 5 A tee shot aimed at the grey path across the ditch should position you well for this hole. The hole sweeps around to the left, over the ditch, leaving a tough approach to a small and wickedly undulating green. Tip: “An approach shot aimed front left of the green should finish close to the flag.”

Hole 13, 535 yards, par 5 A sharp dog-leg left with out of bounds all the way down the left-hand side. A tee shot over the marker post will leave a lay-up shot into the fairway. Tip: “The green is protected by a ditch each side, so aim the approach towards the back of the green, despite it leaving a difficult putt.”

Hole 12, 356 yards, par 4 Uphill, with a slight dog-leg right. A huge bunker awaits a drive struck to the left and there is a large pond immediately in front of the green, which is also bunkered to the right. Tip: “If you don’t get your tee shot away successfully, lay up short of the pond and attempt a chip and a putt for your par.”

Hole 14, 211 yards, par 3 Probably the toughest hole on the course. The front of the green is protected by a pond, a ditch and bushes, so take an extra club to take the trouble short of the green out of play. Tip: “Once you get to the green it slopes severely from back to front.”

14 www.fynn-valley.co.uk

Hole 15, 390 yards, par 4 A sharp-dog leg left. The tee shot needs to be either short or right of the big bunker that is around 230 yards from the tee. The approach is played to a green that slopes from front to back and is protected by several bunkers on the left. Tip: “Leave a full approach shot to make holding the green easier.”

Hole 17, 192 yards, par 3 The first of two very tough finishing holes is a par 3 played across the valley to an undulating green. Beware of an extremely deep bunker 20 yards short of the green. Tip: “That bunker should be avoided at all costs, even if it means laying up.”

Hole 16, 355 yards, par 4 The tee shot requires care to avoid the left-hand bunkers and long hitters may club down to do this. Keep the tee shot just right of the marker post. Tip: “The approach is protected by a ditch short of the green and bunkers either side.”

Hole 18, 452 yards, par 4 Out of reach in two shots except for the longest hitters. The tee shot needs to avoid fairway bunkers left and right. The hole then sweeps around to the left onto the double green shared with the 9th. Tip: “Don’t be greedy, play the hole as a three-shotter and remember that a five is a good score.”

THE GOLF CLUB NETWORK

Fynn Valley is proud to be part of The Golf Club Network, another example of the ways in which the club is continually striving to ensure its memberships represent excellent value for money. The Golf Club Network was founded in 1995 when a group of like-minded, independent golf clubs combined forces to provide reciprocal playing rights to all of their members. The principal benefit for members of Golf Club Network clubs is to be able to play free midweek golf at any of the other member-clubs, with reduced guest fees payable at weekends at some clubs while others offer free golf at weekends too!

Current members need to purchase a Network Card prior to visiting for a oneoff administration fee of £15 (photo required). After that, it’s just a question of finding a course that appeals and making the necessary arrangements. Why not see if there is one near a friend or relative? There are over 30 courses to choose from, spread all over the South of England, as may be seen on the map above. Clubs are being added all the time, so check out the full list and a description of all the participating clubs at www. thegolfclubnetwork.co.uk

Why not get a group together to go off for a few days? Free golf results in an excellent value golf tour.
