Harewood Downs Golf Club
Welcome Harewood Downs Golf Club features some of the finest holes in the county and is a challenging test of golf for both high and low handicap golfers. The beautiful course, which enjoys remarkable views over the Misbourne Valley and rolling Chiltern Hills, dates back to 1907 when it was laid out for the recreational use of members of the House of Commons and the legal establishment. As a safe haven from London, it proved popular especially with Lord Birkett, the judge who presided over the trial of Sir Oswald Mosley during the Second World War, at which time it was a private club. Now a members’ club, the portcullis on the club badge testifies to its Parliamentary origin.
Over the last 10 years, the course has enjoyed substantial investment and now boasts new USGA specification greens which have transformed the quality and consistency of play.
culture, Harewood Downs offers an easy induction to new members. We look forward to welcoming you to our club and would encourage you to visit our website www.hdgc.co.uk.
We are proud of our reputation as a friendly and welcoming club and visiting golfers can expect a warm welcome in our spacious clubhouse which is home to a well-stocked bar and dining room offering first-class home-cooked food to enjoy before or after your round. We welcome any golfer who loves the game, including visitors as green fees or societies and those looking for a flexible range of golf club membership packages. And, with a vigorous roll-up

About the Course Harewood Downs Golf Course lies on the south-facing side of the Misbourne Valley. It is a pretty, undulating parkland course endowed with a rich variety of trees. Over the last ten years, the Club has substantially invested in and rebuilt all of its greens to USGA specification and now boasts a course which is playable practically all the year round. At just over 6000 yards, Harewood Downs is a fair test for both high and low handicap players; the relatively short course is safeguarded by treacherous sloping greens. The most challenging holes include the eleventh, a 422-yard par 4 which requires great accuracy off
the tee followed by a blind shot over the brow of the hill to a narrow entry to the green. The 200-yard par 3 twelfth is considered by many our signature hole and presents a formidable target over a deep valley to a narrow green surrounded by bunkers. We take pride in the year-round condition of our course and in the pace of our beautifully kept greens. Harewood Downs regularly hosts a number of county competitions for both ladies and men and is the permanent venue for the annual Douglas Johns Trophy, a national competition for boys aged 15 and under. Past winners of this
competition have included Justin Rose, Oliver Fisher and Sam Hutsby – Luke Donald was a runner-up! They have all gone on to find success as professional golfers. Come and enjoy our course for yourself – either as a member, a visitor, a Society visitor or as a participant in one of our Open Competitions – for which see p37 for Golf Societies or p39 for Visitors, or contact us for more information.

A Brief History Harewood Downs Golf Club was the brainchild of two men – Thomas Newcomen Archibald Grove and Busick Edward Pemberton. Busick Pemberton was a London solicitor whom Grove persuaded to finance his golf course project as a perceived business opportunity, following the extension of the Metropolitan line through Rickmansworth.
Archie Grove, as he was known, was the entrepreneur. He was born in 1855, the son of Captain E Grove and Elizabeth, daughter of Colonel Ponsonby Watts. The family lived in Pollard’s Park, Chalfont St Giles and owned the Harewood Downs farm from 1835 to 1892. One of the leading golf professionals of the time, J H Taylor, was commissioned to design and set up the course in 1905 and on 16th April 1907 a company called Harewood Downs Golf Club Limited was incorporated. Although the precise origins and personal connections are unclear, there is little doubt that Harewood Downs Golf Club was formed very much as a country golf

club for the Palace of Westminster and the legal profession, with the nobility playing a major part in its early years. The first one hundred members were elected and were nearly all from London with the Rt. Hon. A J Balfour MP (Prime Minister 1902 – 1905) invited to be Captain. He was unable to accept the captaincy and so the Hon. Alfred Lyttleton MP was given the honour of becoming the first Captain of the Club. By 1911 there were more local members, although just under two-thirds were still from the capital including two Prime Ministers, one Marquis, seventeen Lords, four Viscounts, nine Barons and Knights, one Count, two Generals, various Members of Parliament and Leopold de Rothschild – quite an impressive list!

On Monday 22nd June 1908, a year after incorporation, the Course was officially opened. Two of the great triumvirate of golfers of the time, Harry Vardon and J H Taylor – both Open winners – opened the course by playing a 36-hole exhibition match. The Bucks Examiner of 26th June 1908 reports as follows: “The exhibition match proved a very enjoyable affair for those who followed the play. Taylor seemed to revel in the day and played some of his best golf. Vardon, on the other hand, showed signs of fatigue and did not so well adapt himself to the many bad lies found along the fairways.” Taylor had a 74 in the morning and a 75 in the
afternoon with Vardon scoring 80 in the morning but improving to 73 in the afternoon, ultimately losing the match 4 and 3. The Club has seen its fair share of obstacles over the years covering two World Wars and a multitude of changes to the course with major updates soon after opening in 1910, then throughout the 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s with the last major changes in 1953 seeing the course layout evolve into more or less what we see now with the exception of minor tee, green and bunker changes. Major work resumed in 2005 when investment led to the marvellous USGA specification greens that the course boasts today.
Harewood Downs has thrived since opening in 1908 and has protected and enhanced its great reputation as a truly successful and friendly club. The most significant event in its most recent history occurred in 1972. All the shares then owned by non-members, notably descendants of past members, were bought back by the Club so that it became, for the first time, a club fully owned by its members. Our members continue to be proud of their club and look forward to welcoming new members in the years to come. Harewood Downs celebrated its Centenary in 2007.

Take the Course Tour Hole 1 – 338 yards – par 4
Hole 2 – 516 yards – par 5
Hole 3 – 148 yards – par 3
Short par four. Keep tee shot left of centre to allow the best angle to approach the green. Avoid hitting the downslope in front of the green or you are likely to go through the back.
Long par 5. Drive to left side of fairway which slopes from left to right. Only the longer players will get to the green, which is guarded by deep bunkers left and right, in two. Most players should lay up in the valley short of the green and take a wedge from there.
Medium length par 3 with bunkers left and right. Take one more club than you think to avoid the front bunker. The green slopes uphill from front to back.
10 /
Harewood Downs Golf Club
Hole 4 – 314 yards – par 4
Hole 5 – 411 yards – par 4
Hole 6 – 367 yards – par 4
Short par 4 but not an easy tee shot with trees lining the fairway left and right. A long iron or fairway wood with a draw if possible from the tee to a left-to-right sloping fairway will leave a short iron to the green. The green slopes from left to right and better to aim a bit left of the flag.
Medium par 4. Keep tee shot left of centre. Trouble is down the right side from tee to green. An option is to lay up short of the green leaving a short pitch but don’t be short as the ball will spin back down the slope in front of the green.
Long par 4 uphill from tee to green. Longer hitters must avoid the bunker in the centre of the fairway with their tee shot. Keep the second shot to the right to avoid deep greenside bunkers left of the green. A difficult green to hit as it is positioned at a considerable angle to the fairway.

Take the Course Tour CONTINUED Hole 7 – 464 yards – par 4
Hole 8 – 201 yards – par 3
Hole 9 – 405 yards – par 4
Long par 4. Drive must be to the right side of the fairway. The ball will be above your feet for the second shot and aim for the right half of the green. A lay-up will leave you with a short pitch but beware being too long as the green slopes away from the middle to the back.
First of two long short holes. All carry over deep valley. Long iron or fairway wood to this impressive hole – few players are ever long.
Medium par 4. Drive is all uphill. This hole favours the longer hitters who will see the pin for their second shot. Keep the second shot to the right-hand side
12 /
Harewood Downs Golf Club
Hole 10 – 383 yards – par 4
Hole 11 – 422 yards – par 4
Hole 12 – 200 yards – par 3
Short par 4. Blind tee shot downhill to a wide fairway and aim for left of centre as the ball will run off to the right. This leaves a medium-to-short iron shot to the green and best to leave your ball a bit short of the flag in order to get an uphill putt.
Strong par 4. Keep tee shot left. Only longer hitters will see the green for their second shot which must be played to the left side of the fairway as you approach the green. Large deep bunker to right side of green.
The signature hole and one of the best in the county. Bunkers left and right. All carry over valley to a large green. Out of bounds is at the back. Front pin position is deadly if you are towards the middle to back of the green. Good luck!

Harewood Downs Golf Club
Take the Course Tour CONTINUED Hole 13 – 460 yards – par 5
Hole 14 – 387 yards – par 4
Hole 15 – 133 yards – par 3
Short par 5 but all uphill. There is more room on the right than the left for the tee shot. Keep second shot to left side to leave short pitch to the green. There is one bunker on the left side of the green.
Short par 4. Three bunkers guard the left of the fairway with bushes and outof-bounds on the right – no need for a driver here. Blind shot downhill to green – often plays shorter than its yardage. If confident, hit the full length to the flag but, if not, play a canny shot and use the downslope in front of the green.
Uphill short hole. Four deep bunkers – two short, two left of a very deep green. This can play two clubs more than its length. Beware being on the right side of this green as there is a difficult two-tier area. Check the pin colour.

Take the Course Tour CONTINUED Hole 16 – 410 yards – par 4
Hole 17 – 118 yards – par 3
Hole 18 – 359 yards – par 4
Strong par 4. Dog-leg left to right. Keep tee shot left. Second shot is semi-blind to elevated green. A lay-up shot over the fairway bunker will set you up for a short pitch to the green but try not to be past the flag as you will have a tricky downhill putt.
Large bunker guards green and out-ofbounds on left. Be safe and take one more club to this large green. Avoid going right as it will bounce severely to the right and leave a very difficult chip shot.
Elevated tee shot. Out-of-bounds is to the right. Keep left of centre to run down towards the green leaving a short iron in. Green has many slopes and borrows, making it hard not to three putt.

Becoming a Member Harewood Downs welcomes applications to join and offers a number of membership opportunities – please discuss with the Secretary on 01494 762184 or office@hdgc.co.uk. The Club has much to recommend it – our beautiful course, well-appointed clubhouse and, most important, the friendly social atmosphere enjoyed by members and visitors alike, whatever their age and ability.
Harewood Downs is “more than just a golf club” and the ethos is for members to enjoy playing their golf in our various ‘rollups’ throughout the week – start sheets and booked tee times are only used in medals and qualifying competitions. These roll-up groups are known by various names, tee off at different times and play different formats, with some groups recording members’ scores throughout the year so that handicaps can be adjusted accordingly.
We operate a full schedule of qualifying and non-qualifying competitions for all groups and abilities of play as well as matches against other clubs, so you won’t be a new member for long. Our categories of membership are designed to accommodate all levels of golfers, from beginners to scratch players with a smooth progression from junior to full adult membership.

Members’ Golf Men The Men’s section at Harewood Downs is extremely active with regular individual and foursomes or fourball competitions and knockouts throughout the year as well as longstanding matches with local clubs from March to October. We also have home and away matches with the Club’s Artisan section, and an annual match against the Ladies. On Captain’s Day, as many players as possible, including artisans and cadets, enter the competition and players are entertained by the Captain and his family at the half-way house where they enjoy drinks and a barbecue. In the evening a special Captain’s Day Dinner in the clubhouse is attended by members and their guests.

There are several club teams: the Scratch Team which plays in the first division of the BB&O scratch league against 5 other clubs home and away; the ‘B’ team who have an enviable home record and consists of players with handicaps of 12 or less who play 9 other clubs home and away; and the Foxes (handicaps 10-20) who play 7 local clubs home and away. Away matches provide a low-cost way to play other courses, make new friends in the local area and, most importantly, the opportunity for you to represent your club. Our Seniors’ Section welcomes all gentlemen over the age of 55. There are regular midweek matches against 9 other local clubs, home and away, from April to September and monthly
Harewood Downs Golf Club
Stableford competitions. As well as summer trophies, this section also meets frequently for roll-ups. The Seniors are a friendly group and readily welcome new members. Ladies The Ladies are a welcoming, competitive and active group of lady golfers of all ages and abilities who play regularly in competitions and matches as well as mixed events. They meet every Tuesday for organised competitions which in summer are mainly qualifying for handicap but in winter are a mixture of qualifying and fun non-qualifying competitions for when the weather is at its worst.
There are also regular competitions for Business Ladies with reserved tee times most Saturday mornings. The ladies participate in matches with other clubs from March to October and also enter county leagues over the summer as well as the winter months. Getting involved in playing for the teams provides a great opportunity to experience other courses, meet new people and represent your club. The Ladies’ calendar is composed of weekly Stableford, medal and par competitions as well as trophy competitions in the summer and knockouts in both summer and winter.
Lady Captain’s Day each summer is the highlight of her year with a barbecue and half-way house, usually manned by her family, during the competition and a special tea with strawberries and cream afterwards. Past Lady Captains are invited to attend, and, as well as the 18-hole competition there is a 9-hole competition, and a putting competition for ladies who no longer play golf. Invitation Day, when ladies welcome guests from other clubs, is another important event. The Lady Captain’s Day Out, when about 50 or 60 ladies visit another club for the day offers another special occasion for this section of the Club.
Mixed The Mixed Section meets for a fun competition every Bank Holiday Monday throughout the main golfing season, and once a month between April and August there is an evening set aside for a 9-hole 4BBB competition followed by dinner. There are also mixed matches against other clubs throughout the summer months, an annual mixed foursomes knockout competition, two Mixed AwayDays in spring and autumn and also a mixed club tour in the late summer.

Members’ Golf CONTINUED Juniors Harewood Downs welcomes juniors of all standards and encourages boys and girls to develop a passion for golf. Harewood Downs was awarded GolfMark accreditation in 2006 being the first club in the area to achieve this. It recognises our junior-friendly facilities which help introduce young people to golf in a safe, professional and fun environment. We have links with local primary and secondary schools and provide coaching to encourage increased participation from local girls and boys. With the support of our professional staff and volunteers, we provide all juniors
with a safe environment and positive experience every time they visit the Club. We accept children from 6 years old and as part of their membership we offer group coaching lessons and use of the course and its facilities. There are special blue tees set up at the front of each fairway for junior golfers who are new to the game and not quite capable of hitting from the tee boxes. There are also regular competitions at weekends and in the school holidays and matches against other local clubs. Regular group coaching sessions are run and we also have an Elite Cadet Squad for our most gifted juniors – competition to enter the squad is intense!

Academy Membership For those who are taking up golf, returning to golf from a break or do not have a handicap, the Club runs a Golf Academy, which is intended to provide the stepping stone to full membership. Lessons and coaching sessions are conducted by our Professionals and a sheltered practice facility supports our driving range, short game area, practice net and putting green to help you improve your golf.
We arrange group lessons and organise monthly roll-ups for Academy members. At these roll-ups, Academy members will have the opportunity to play with full HDGC members who are more than willing to pass on their knowledge of both the Club and the game.
When Academy members achieve the required handicap (24 for men and 36 for ladies), we invite them to apply to join as a full member. They are expected to transfer from the Academy to full membership within two years.
Academy members have full access to the clubhouse and are encouraged to join in with the social life at the Club. An Academy member can receive a Club card which allows him or her to buy food and drink at the members’ discounted prices.
We also run a Junior Academy for boys and girls were they can learn the basics of how to play golf. Emphasis is placed on the importance of learning the etiquette of the game and on safety, both for the player and for others on the course.
