Since 1976 the golf club, on the outskirts of the enterprising town of Haverhill, has developed, from humble beginnings as a 9-hole municipal course, to what is considered to be one of East Anglia’s hidden golfing gems.
Either before or when you’ve finished your round you will find a warm welcome in the clubhouse where a range of beverages and high quality food are on offer. You will not find a more pleasant place to relax than the south-facing terrace that overlooks the course.
Now a member’s club with18 holes set in attractive mature parkland bisected by the River Stour and with strategically placed ponds, trees and bunkers the course provides a great challenge for golfers of all abilities. You will find our reputation of having the best greens in the county as not being exaggerated and you can play on them all year round.
Our PGA qualified Professional provides a personable service and offer an extensive range of equipment, clothing and accessories along with providing a tailored coaching programme, be you new to the game or county standard player, you are all very welcome.
It is not a long course, by today’s standards, the emphasis is on accuracy and good course management, I hope you will take up the challenge soon.

A BRIEF HISTORY To paraphrase Theodore Roosevelt ‘Nothing worth having comes easy’. This certainly applies to Haverhill Golf Club and it’s hard to believe that today we enjoy such a fine golf course and facilities from such humble beginnings. The concept of a Golf course in Haverhill came about in the late 1960’s when plans to expand the town were being developed. The ex-Walker Cup Captain Charles Laurie amended initial layout designs and the resulting 9-hole course was built on farmland bisected by the Stour Brook and opened during the hot, dry summer of 1976. Originally a municipal pay and play course it was the Council’s continued insistence that temporary tees were used and a constant issue with drainage that led the members to take matters into their own hands and take over responsibility for the
course, by 1982 Haverhill Golf Club was established as a member owned club. Major developments came in the mid 1990’s when it was decided to build a new clubhouse and expand the course to 18 holes. Local course architect Philip Pilgrem was engaged as course designer and worked with members on plans to integrate the existing holes with the new holes on adjacent land. At the same time the new clubhouse was constructed, a tremendous improvement on the Portakabins that the members had previously enjoyed. The clubhouse was opened in 1995 and dedicated to Major Basil Kiddy who was instrumental in the formation of the club. The new 18 hole course layout was opened in April 1998 with the incoming Captain, Gerry Scott’s, ‘Drive In’.
In creating the expanded course some 7,000 trees were planted that today provide definition and beautiful colours, particularly in the autumn. These mass plantings augment the existing specimen trees and those kindly donated by members, strategically placed around the course. The introduction or expansion of the existing ponds on the 11th, 15th, 16th and 18th add to the natural water hazards presented by the Stour Brook and encourage you to think as your stand on the tee visualising your tee shot.
Not being a wealthy club these major capital projects have been delivered thanks to the persistence and dedication of an ever-changing core group of members who successfully raise funds and commit so much of their own time and effort into creating the wonderful facilities we enjoy today. We thank them.

As club membership grew so did the clubhouse and 2007 saw the opening of the stud bar, an extension to the dining room and improvements to the kitchen and cellar to enable staff to cope with more visitors to the club. It has become a popular destination for dinners, private parties, wedding receptions and funeral receptions.

Course Tour – Hole by hole Hole 1: The opening hole doglegs to the left offering the option of either a safe tee shot down the middle avoiding the bunker on the right or, for the long hitters, over the trees on the left to leave a short pitch to the green. There are bunkers front left and to the right of the two tiered green and a potentially troublesome belt of conifer trees behind. Hole 2: The first of four par threes on the course. The goal is to avoid the bunkers guarding the front left and right of the raised green, which also slopes from back to front. If in doubt, take an extra club from the tee.
Hole 3: Here you will need as long a drive as you can muster to clear the ravine, leaving an approach shot that is also slightly uphill so don’t under club especially as the greenside bunkers guard the entrance to the expansive green. Hole 4: This par 5 doglegs to the left requiring a drive of around 220 from the competition tees. A blind bunker on the corner of the dogleg awaits a drive aimed too far left. The long hitters may drive over the corner but out of bounds on the left awaits the tugged drive. A bunker straddling the fairway about 25 yards short of the green cautions all but the bravest from trying to get up in two. The green is bunkered left and right and is fiercely tiered. Judging a putt up the slope when the pin is cut at the back can be very tricky.
Hole 6: This par 5 hole is distinctive for the number of bunkers lying in wait to ensnare practically every shot to the green. Consider carefully your route and club selection especially on the second shot where some of the bunkers are unsighted. The green is subtle with slightly unexpected borrows and steep fall aways.
Hole 7: This par 4 places a premium on accuracy from the tee; go too far left or right and you will be out of bounds and too long and left..... in the trees. The second shot takes a slight dog leg right and is uphill, an extra club will make sure you reach a fairly flat green bunkered on both sides. Beware the blind greenside bunker front right.

Hole 5: Avoid driving too far left as the fairway quickly disappears into a lateral water hazard running the length of the hole. A fairway bunker on the right is designed to catch a well hit drive. The answer obviously is to hit it straight down the middle! Your approach should be bold to take out the greenside bunkers on both sides. As with most holes on the course there is little trouble at the back of the green.

Course Tour – Hole by hole Hole 8: A short par three well bunkered on the right and front left. Miss the green to the left and your ball may well bounce down the slope and out of bounds, aim a little right and watch it bounce and role nicely down to the flag side. Hole 9: Avoid the two fairway bunkers and you have this fairway mastered. The green however, is two tiered and can be fiendishly difficult when the hole is cut on the top tier. Many a perfectly struck approach shot has inexplicably run off the back of this green leaving a tricky chip back.
Hole 10: The back 9 starts with a monstrous par 4 the sole consolation being a fairly generous fairway with no bunkers until you reach the green. Getting home in two is beyond the majority, so a par often feels like a birdie. The greenside bunkers are front left and right so don’t be short with your approach. Hole 11: HGC’s Signature Hole! Your elevated position from the tee gives a beautiful view of the challenge to come. Avoid the pond to the left and pop the ball up and over the golf ball hungry River Stour 25 yards short of the green. Once you have holed out, take a second to admire from behind the green, the magnificent hole you have just conquered.
Hole 13: A stunning par 4, lined on the left by evergreens protecting the old railway line. Mature Willow trees block any shot from right of the fairway and a cavernous bunker short right of the green is best avoided. The green holds few terrors but runs slightly back to front.
Hole 14: An over hit drive up the left can leave you having to negotiate your way out of trees. Drift right and the same fate awaits. A well struck drive is likely to leave you with a long shot to the green. The green is bunkered on the right and front left and slopes back to front. Always comforting to walk off with a par at this hole. Hole 15: Only the longest and bravest hitters take on the river from off the tee. A well-managed tee shot favours the left hand side of the fairway but not so long as to finish behind a large willow tree. Anything right risks being blocked out by trees on either side of the river. The pond, short and right, shouldn’t come into play, but does. The approach to the green needs to steer clear of the large and much visited greenside bunker front right and another pond awaits an over hit shot.

Hole 12: A testing par 3 requiring a long iron or possibly a fairway wood from the white tees. A hooked tee shot could take you out of bounds. Beware the bunker short and left of the green and another deep revetted bunker to the right.

Hole 16: At least a fairly long iron needed to this par 3 hole especially if the pin is cut at the back of the green. No shortage of bunkers front right and left so, as ever at Haverhill, don’t be short. Hole 17: Just when you wanted to coast in with a couple of easy holes comes the nerve jangling 17th. Drive over the ditch, and you’re in a good position. There is only modest gap between a row of 100ft tall Poplar trees and the river which runs across the fairway 100 yards short and winds alongside the green. Drag your approach left and the river Stour sneaks back to extract its revenge. Untypically there is only a single greenside bunker on the right.
Hole 18: At last, the end is near. Resist the temptation, especially in a medal, to take on the small lake to on the right. The reward is simply not worth the risk for most golfers. The hole requires a crisply struck shot of no more than 180 yards into the centre of the fairway leaving a straightforward shot into the twotiered green.

This course is designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills and understanding necessary to access and progress to degree level study or employment in the performing arts. The Swallows is a sixteen bed care home for the elderly in a rural setting just outside Haverhill in Suffolk. Residents tell us the best thing about the home is the caring attitude of the staff, although they also like the food provided, the ambience in the communal areas and the lovely views over the farmland opposite. Staff work well as a team, following the care plans agreed for each resident that indicate their personal preferences and care needs. We offer our residents plenty of opportunities for stimulating activities and staff are trained to respond to individual needs and desires in a positive way to ensure they are as happy as they can be in a safe and homely environment.

Haverhill Golf Club in Suffolk is perfectly located 20 miles east of Cambridge, 17 miles south west of Bury St Edmunds, 18 miles north of Braintree and some 30 miles north west of Colchester. The club offers easy access from major routes including the M11, A11, A14 and A120.

Visitors are welcome to play at Haverhill GC on any day, and can be sure of a friendly environment to enjoy a challenging round of golf. You do not have to be a seasoned golfer to spend a pleasurable time with us enjoying a day to remember. There are three tees to each hole on the course which, you will find, will provide interesting challenges for golfers of all abilities, the white tees extend the course to over 6,000 yards and the yellow and red decrease in length respectively. We ask all players to observe the rules of golf and regulations of the club to ensure good pace of play. If you require help or advice on any aspect of this, please check with the Pro Shop or Office at the time of making your booking.
Green fees vary depending on the time of year and the day of the week with cheaper rates available at certain times and as the seasons change. Junior visitors are welcomed and have access to very competitive green fee charges.

Ollie Rush – PGA Professional and Academy Manager Ollie Rush is the only Qualified TPI instructor in Suffolk (as of 1st Jan 2015) and during his studies won the TGI East Region assistant of the year for his high grades during his third year of training. He has completed his Advanced Certificate in Golf Coaching at Birmingham University and is now studying for his Level 3 coaching certificate. Glenn Norris - Head Green Keeper Glenn has been the Head Green Keeper at Haverhill Golf Club since 2007. Starti ng his career with us as an apprentice, straight from school, at the age of 16. He works as part of a team of five full-time green keepers. The other members of the team are Craig Sisson who has worked at the club since 2008, James Porth who has been at the club since 1991, and the newest members of the team, Matt and Kieran.
‘As head green keeper my focus for Haverhill golf club has been to improve course presentati on and course playability. We have completed a number of signifi cant projects which have been great to be a part of. A key focus has been to improve the greens which I believe to be the main part of a golf course, to do this we have implemented a hollow tining
programme to help with drainage together with a leaner ferti lising programme, that has led to quicker greens with better drainage. We plan to introduce a more frequent aerati on programme for the fairways making the course playable all year around and are embarking on a new long term bunker improvement project, exciting times for Haverhill Golf Club. My long-term plan is to create a high quality course which members are proud of and visitors enjoy’.

Haverhill GC’s clubhouse has a welcoming atmosphere for members, visiting players or those coming to enjoy lunch or the popular Sunday carvery with friends and family. The spacious bar and patio, with views across the practice green and tree-lined first hole, provides a perfect spot to relax, with that drink and bit to eat and reflect on your round. The patio area is a favourite place to sit as the sun shines. Both our lounge bar and stud bar are well stocked with a good selection of beers, wines, spirits and a choice of soft drinks along with tea and coffee of course. Hot and cold food is served daily seven days a week with breakfast, lunch and snacks available.
Golfers can even order before their rounds and their food be ready for them on their return. Our catering team have an excellent reputation, offering a varied daily menu together with catering for functions and special occasions. This first-rate menu is extended to visitors and societies planning a full day’s golf. The clubhouse offers free Wi-Fi but does encourage limited use of silenced mobile devices! Haverhill Golf Club has an active and imaginative social committee who provide a varied range of activities and functions throughout the year. Events are tailored to cater for all ages and budgets ranging from an Easter Sunday Egg Hunt for children, discos, dancing to “Rat-Pack” style music and fine dining. Quizzes are always a popular event in the social calendar as is the well-attended karaoke evening.
We have regular themes nights that can range from an Italian evening of food and entertainment to race nights where you can buy and name a horse, have the fun and excitement of ownership without the cost of upkeep and stabling! Mike Rees from the Suffolk Golf Union has, in recent years, given up some of his time to run an evening question and answer session for club members which are always fun and enlightening, the quiz at the end often causes a bead of sweat to form on the forehead of even the best of golfers.

We are pleased with the way our golf course has developed over the last few years. Since extending to an 18 hole course the club has hosted a number of prestigious events including the East Anglian Senior Ladies Championships 2016, the Southern Counties Senior Foursomes Finals 2016 and the Suffolk Amateur Open 2015. We love holding open events to enable visitors to enjoy our wonderful course and facilities in a friendly but competitive atmosphere.
