Welcome Established in 1903, Hendon Golf Club is a picturesque parkland course set in the heart of North London and is one of the finest anywhere in and around the capital. Glimpsing any wandering wildlife around our course is not a rarity and is a real wonder to behold when working your way round the course. The 6,289 yards that make up our magnificent 18-hole course are a true test of your golfing ability and will cause you to use all of your course management skills and golf expertise to complete the course successfully. Our off-course facilities are equally as delightful and our comfortable and spacious clubhouse makes for the perfect setting to relax and unwind after a round of golf or even to host special occasions such as weddings, anniversaries or even birthday parties and business meetings.

Our catering facilities are second to none and our friendly and attentive staff will ensure that you are made to feel at home during your time with us, whilst enjoying all the benefits our clubhouse has to offer. The club’s proximity to the centre of the capital provides easy access to nearby shopping, restaurants and first class nightlife. history The foundations of what would eventually become Hendon Golf Club were first laid down in 1900 when Tommy Cutting and local bank manager Walter Mull agreed terms with a Mr E. Slade, a local farmer who owned Holders Hill Dairy Farm, for the the marking out of a nine-hole golf course on part of Mr Slade’s 40 acres of land. For the first few years members of the club themselves were responsible for cutting the grass and keeping the course in playable order, with the livestock of Mr Slade keeping other areas in trim and making for some interesting moving hazards.

To be able to accept Mr Slade’s offer a certain amount of members were needed and so a meeting was called to enrol new members into the club. Over 50 new members were elected and Hendon Golf Club was officially formed. The clubhouse was built between 1905 and 1906 on the recently acquired land. New greens were made, hedges and a number of trees removed and ditches were piped and filled in. Horses and grass cutting machines were brought in to cut fairways and other work was completed by members who volunteered to lend a hand. This progression meant that the club was able to gain more members and become more of an importance in the local community.

In early 1903, Mr J. W. Johnstone, Mr H. Walduck and Dr. Houlbrook became members of the club and were able to negotiate a lease with Mr Slade for the land at a rental rate of £55 per year.

history The few members who did not enter the forces in World War 1 kept the course alive, with the hope that those returning from the war would have something good to come back to. The end of the war brought in a number of new members including Mr W. Greenshields and Mr A.G. Emblow, who would later become Honorary Scretary and Honorary Treasurer respectively. It was in this period that additional land was purchased and part of the old course disposed of with the object of extending and improving the course. Plans were prepared by H. S. Colt, the leading golf architect of the day; the result was that 13 new greens were made, others were remodelled and 100 new bunkers were built. The course now measured about 6,200 yards from the back tees.

In 1927 a new Clubhouse was built providing facilities for its growing membership. In 1929 further improvements were made to the course, and trees and flowering shrubs, many of which were donated by members, were planted in suitable locations. In 1939 with the outbreak of the war, The British Military requisitioned the Clubhouse, leaving the members with a small room only. Twenty-two acres of land comprising of the 14th, 16th & 17th holes were ploughed up and planted with corn. In 1940 a fire caused serious damage to the Clubhouse.

In 1965 the new Clubhouse was built in its current position and at the time it was considered one of the finest in the country. During the Centenary of the Club in 2003, major refurbishments were undertaken both inside and out resulting in larger locker rooms and a large, sunny balcony with a magnificent view of the course and a wonderful backdrop for enjoying drinks and meals with friends and fellow golfers.

The interior of the clubhouse was also renovated providing an attractive lounge and dining room for up to 120 people in a welcoming atmosphere for members and visitors alike.

About the Course The original course was designed in 1925 by Harry Colt, a leading golf architect of his day. The course is renowned for its small, well-guarded greens which are kept in immaculate condition throughout the year. There are some notable holes on the course. The 2nd, a long par 4, requires a high quality shot in order to reach a narrow well-guarded green; a par here brings a sense of relief and no little satisfaction. One feature of this hole is a watercourse crossing the fairway about 100 yards from the green with an attractive stone bridge spanning it.

Stretching over approx. 120 acres of North London, our pristine 18 hole course will test your golfing skills to the limits and cause you to play every shot having thought about it carefully first. Our course is indeed a challenge for golfers of all levels but that does not make it any less enjoyable to play. With its beautiful surroundings and wide open fairways you are assured that the difficulty of the course will match the enjoyment you will have making your way round it. Tree lined fairways and rolling greens are the order of the day at Hendon Golf Club and as you work your way round our stellar course you will find yourself wondering if you have ventured into the rural countryside, rather than being so close to the centre of London.

About the Course We have put considerable investment into improving our course to ensure that our members get the most for the money they pay to be part of our club. Our new drainage system and tree management means that our course in now playable almost all year round and is suited to most weather conditions, something that is very useful in England.

Take the course tour • Hole 1 – Par 4, 344 yards.

• Hole 3 – Par 4, 371 yards.

You’ll want to hit your tee shot to the left of the fairway to give yourself the best chance of finding the well-bunkered green with your second. The hidden bunkers cannot be seen due to the run of the fairway, so aiming for the centre of the green is your best bet.

It is a good idea to favour the left side of the fairway on this uphill par 4. Be sure to use enough club to reach the back of the green, which slopes heavily from back to front, and leaving the ball short could see it find one of several bunkers that surround the green.

• Hole 2 – Par 4, 441 yards.

• Hole 4 – Par 4, 368 yards.

To give yourself the best chance of reaching the green in two, you should aim to your ball down towards the bridge, avoiding the fairway bunker on the right The second shot is one of the toughest you’ll hit, to this small hourglass shaped green. Playing to the front of the green is the sensible bet.

This dog-leg par 4 slopes downhill but be wary because it is easy to run out of room if you hit the ball too far, 250 yards should be about right. Five bunkers lying around the green will punish you if you fail to find the putting surface with your second shot.

Take the course tour • Hole 5 – Par 4, 402 yards.

• Hole 7 – Par 4, 346 yards.

With a tough dog-leg right this hole is very risk and reward and the further you want to hit the ball the further right you will need to go as it is very easy to run out of room. There are also two bunkers on the right of the fairway so playing left is the safe bet. Find the left of the green with your second and you set up a great birdie opportunity.

With a ditch in the middle of the fairway the golfer is left with two choices; either play short and leave a longer second shot, or risk it and try and pass the ditch. The second option is high risk but the chances of getting a birdie are far greater.

• Hole 6 – Par 3, 191 yards. The first par 3 of the course is not easy by any means. The sloping green means that finding the left side of it is the your best chance of making below par. However par on this hole is no bad accomplishment.

• Hole 8 – Par 5, 542 yards. This is the longest hole on the course but some smart golf can see a below par score made. The slight dog-leg left means that aiming just left of the ladies’ tee will place you in the middle of the fairway. The ditch 60 yards short of the green makes this hole tough to reach in two so keeping down the left of the fairway and short of the ditch is the safest option but longer hitters may be tempted to find the green.

• Hole 9 – Par 3, 109 yards.

• Hole 11 – Par 4, 453 yards.

Don’t be fooled by the length of this hole, extreme accuracy is needed in order to find the green. With five deep bunkers surrounding it you will see your birdie chances fade away if you find one.

The further you can make it up this par 4 the more of the green you will be able to see. Beware as the green slopes right to left and the ball can run away if it doesn’t land well. Par on this hole is a very good score.

• Hole 10 – Par 4, 404 yards.

• Hole 12 – Par 5, 511 yards.

A 250 yard tee shot will see you safely on the fairway short of the ditch that can be found closer to the 300 yard mark. Finishing left of the hole, on this right to left sloping green, will leave the ideal birdie putt.

Aiming left of the first fairway bunker should see your ball find the middle of the fairway but be warned too far left and you could find yourself in the out of bounds area. This is a shot for the longer hitters who fancy finding the green in two but for those who want to play safe leaving your ball 100 yards or so short of the green is a good bet.

Take the course tour • Hole 13 – Par 3, 148 yards.

• Hole 15 – Par 4, 317 yards.

A very small green makes this hole quite tricky but if you can find the centre then a short birdie putt is on the cards, but beware of the bunkers that surround the green.

Aiming left is essential on this hole as the fairway slopes right into a bunker, the further down the left of the fairway you go the less likely you are to find the bunker. The ideal shot to the green will see your ball land just left of the flag, going for a birdie is a no brainer.

• Hole 14 – Par 4, 307 yards. The shortest par 4 on the course requires important club selection. Too much club and you could hit the bunkers on the fairway, too little and you leave a tough second shot to find the green.

• Hole 16 – Par 4, 411 yards. Aim towards the bunker on the left hand side and you will have a simple second shot, too far right and your route to the green could be blocked off by the trees. It is safest to find the back of the green with your second shot as a row of bunkers at the front of the green do pose a threat.

Be sure to take enough club on this short hole as the bunker short of the green will punish those who fail to hit past it.

This tough par 4 normally plays into the wind and so can play as a par 5 depending on how hard the wind is blowing. The longer hitters should be able to hit the green in two put shorter hitters may need to leave the ball short and chip on to the green. A par on this hole will send you to the bar with a smile on your face.

Clubhouse Built in the 1960s, and designed by Michael Lyell, the clubhouse at Hendon Golf Club has been admired by many modern architects for its clean lines and classic architecture that encapsulates the era it was built. From our large balcony there is a spectacular view of our course with barely a building in site, just the way golf is meant to be. The clubhouse underwent major refurbishment in 2003 to help celebrate our centenary, and bring it into the modern era.

We are also extremely proud of our snooker room, which boasts a World Championship table. This was generously donated by Joe Davies, a former member and the father of professional snooker. Memberships Hendon Golf Club has a very active membership with a mix of both regular golfers and more fair-weather players. Our full fixture lists offer something for everyone, from a range of knockout competitions to open and invitational events. We also host a wide range of social events throughout the year, which are open to all of our members. Membership includes the use of the course, practice facilities, clubhouse and the ability to hire our venue for your own private functions. Our members list is very broad in terms of age, gender and cultural backgrounds and all of our members enjoy the chance to meet new people, which is easy with the amount of golf and social events we host. Junior Golf Hendon Golf Club welcomes all golfers, from 7 to 17. Currently we have around 30 junior golfers listed with us. Matthew Bookatz, Assistant Professional, is in charge of our junior coaching programme. Matthew provides the complimentary service every Monday night for juniors from 5pm until 6.30pm. During the winter months the junior coaching is held at the Metro driving range at Barnet Copthall.

Hendon stands above other clubs as they are one of the very few clubs who have no restrictions at all on when Juniors can play. Hendon Golf club has been awarded the GolfMark award. This award is given to clubs which provide first-class training facilities, the very best coaching at all levels and a safe and organised environment for children to learn to play golf.

During the summer months the coaching is split between Metro driving range and Hendon Golf Club, giving the juniors ample opportunity to work on their short game and to play on the course.

Junior Golf Hendon enters its junior team in the Friern Junior League. Matches are played between teams of 6 golfers and comprise of home and away matches against the 3 other clubs in our group. Who are we: Richmond Fellowship (RF) is a specialist provider of mental health services, and one of the biggest voluntary sector providers of mental health care in England, working with nearly 9,000 people.
