Welcome Founded in 1904 by Sir Arthur Conan-Doyle and a small group of golfing enthusiasts, Hindhead Golf Club is set in one of the most glorious natural settings and ranks amongst the best of Britain’s heathland courses.
We have all the facilities that a golfer would expect at a well-established club. The Pro Shop stocks a full range of equipment and also has clubs and trolleys available for hire.
The 18-hole layout measures 6,390 yards with a par of 70 and, situated close to the A3, this ‘gem’ of a course is a must for every golfer, whatever their handicap.
Our impressive clubhouse has excellent facilities including bar, a restaurant and a lounge area where social functions take place throughout the year. We also have a snooker room on the first floor.
The course was ranked 33 in the Top 100 Golf Courses in England in 2017. The essence and character of the course is complemented by its sheer breath-taking natural beauty.
The Club has competitive green fee rates and we welcome enquiries about membership. We aim to provide everyone with a fantastic experience whether it’s on the golf course or in the clubhouse.

History Hindhead Golf Club was founded in 1904 by a group of golfing enthusiasts that included Sir Arthur Conan-Doyle, who later became the first Club President.
By 1904 the golf club had been inaugurated, all be it with fewer than 18 holes, with the annual subscription fixed at two guineas until the full 18 holes were open.
Conan-Doyle moved to Hindhead in 1895 as he and his wife looked to escape the damp climes of London and, once at home, ConanDoyle’s interest in golf led him to become a member of the then named “Hankley Common and Hindhead Golf Club”.
Following a period of fund-raising, the Club acquired an estimated £1,750 towards the building of a clubhouse and, by the end the year, work had begun on the building. A year later work also began on the development of a full 18-hole course, with the guiding influence of a member of the Great Triumvirate, John Henry Taylor.
After numerous uphill trips back home it was decided that Hindhead required a golf club of its own. In 1903, Conan-Doyle and friends took leases of around 150 acres of land thought to be sufficient for a course of some 6,000 yards.
6 | www.hindheadgolfclub.co.uk
Taylor, the Open champion of 1894, 1895 and 1900 (and later 1909 and 1913), helped the Club develop a course that today remains built into a beautiful countryside setting featuring plenty of heather.
On 30th June 1906, the clubhouse was completed along with the full 18-hole course, with James Braid and J. H. Taylor playing an exhibition match to celebrate its completion. Thanks to numerous donations from the Club’s Members and the patronage of the local military, the Club was able to limp through the war years of 1914-18 and again from 1939-45. The Club was still struggling financially in the mid-1950s and it wasn’t until 1960 that solvency was restored. The years thereafter to the present day have been characterised by further expansion in membership and subscription but at the same time, significant development to both the course and the clubhouse. Among
the most notable of these were the relocation and rebuilding of the Pro Shop and the renovation of changing facilities and bars. The past assignment of Hindhead as a Regional Open Championship Qualifier course is a palpable accolade to the current quality and condition of our Club. The storms of 1987 felled a considerable number of trees and the unstinting efforts during subsequent years, under the leadership of course manager Steve Holmes, has gone some way to restoring the original heathland character of the course.

About the Course One of the highest golf courses in Surrey and ranking among the very best of Britain’s heather and heathland courses, Hindhead’s principal feature is the unique contrast between the two halves of its layout. The holes from the second to the ninth follow the valleys formed in some long gone Ice Age and here the fairways, the rising slopes of heather, bracken and trees add not only to the challenge of the game but to the breathtaking beauty of the course.
While perhaps not excessively long by today’s standards at 6,390 yards, Hindhead still represents a fine test of golf. The signature hole on the course is the par three 6th. At 153 yards, accuracy is key. If you can avoid the four bunkers surrounding the putting surface you are still left with a challenge putting on the two-tiered green.
The first hole and the last nine are laid out on an “upper” plateau more in keeping with the traditional Surrey heathland course. The fairways of the top nine look deceptively wide after the previous valleys, each of them appearing to allow more than enough room off the tee.

Course Tour If you have never played at Hindhead Golf Club before you are in for a treat. Make the most of your trip by learning about some of the pitfalls that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you follow our hole-by-hole tour. Hole 1, 413 yards, par 4 One of the most challenging opening holes in championship golf. To have a good view of the green a tee shot of 250 yards is required. If in doubt, play short and left. Hole 2, 464 yards, par 5 A blind tee shot to a narrow fairway. If you are unable to reach the green with your second, play to the bottom of the slope and then pitch on. The green slopes from right to left.
10 | www.hindheadgolfclub.co.uk
Hole 3, 193 yards, par 3 A steep bank to the left of the green and bunkers to the right. There is plenty of fairway short of the green which cannot be seen from the tee. The green is long, so take one more club when the pin is on the back level. Hole 4, 536 yards, par 5 Your line from the elevated tee is at the distant bunker. Lay up short of the bunker then pitch on. Longer hitters can carry to the green which slopes left to right and downhill.
Hole 5, 388 yards, par 4 A dog-leg right to left. Watch out for the right-hand side fairway bunker. The green here is quite shallow so try and pitch the ball on the front – too bold and the ball will go over the back. Hole 6, 153 yards, par 3 A well bunkered par 3. When playing downhill take less club. If this flag is on the back tier take one more club. Hole 7, 411 yards, par 4 Stroke index 1. A good par four that requires a straight drive and correct club selection for the second shot. The green is 37 yards long and remember you are playing slightly uphill so be sure to take enough club.
Hole 8, 234 yards, par 3 A tough uphill par 3. Your line from the tee is at the left half of the green. The bank on the left will encourage the ball on to the green. Try and leave yourself an easier uphill putt on this green that slopes from back to front. Hole 9, 419 yards, par 4 This hole is uphill all the way. Your line from the tee is at the left-hand fairway bunker. The approach shot is to an elevated green so take at least one more club to make the carry. Try and leave yourself an easier uphill putt.

Course Tour Continued Hole 10, 173 yards, par 3 A par 3 that punishes a wayward shot. The green is quite long so take plenty of club when the pin is at the back. Try to favour the left side of the green. Hole 11, 431 yards, par 4 A slightly blind tee shot that must land on the left half of the fairway. Anything straight or right will end up in the heather. Try to land your second shot just short, then let the ball release down to the flag. Hole 12, 424 yards, par 4 Again the fairway sends the ball slightly right so the left half of the fairway is your line from the tee. Your second shot is downhill which slopes left to right.
Hole 13, 271 yards, par 4 An easy par 4 perhaps! Long hitters can drive the green here by taking a line on the pine tree to the left of the green. If you need to play an approach it must be played to the left of the pin as the green slopes steeply from left to right. Hole 14, 386 yards, par 4 An uphill par 4. Tee your ball a little higher and aim up the left of the fairway as any shot to the right will be impeded by the tree. Take care with your approach shot, particularly when the flag is on the back of the green.

Course Tour Continued Hole 15, 130 yards, par 3 Looks easy but is not. Some hidden ground lies between the middle bunker and the green. Play for the back half of the green to make sure you carry the bunkers. The green slopes from back to front and left to right.
Hole 17, 410 yards, par 4 A right to left dogleg par 4. Here the fairway slopes sharply from right to left so your aiming point is at the clump of trees just behind the first green. Your approach shot is to a sunken green, so it is best to play short and let your ball run on to the green.
Hole 16, 513 yards, par 5 A left to right dogleg par 5. The ideal line off the tee is the centre of the fairway with a fade. A drive too far left will be blocked by a pine tree. Once round the corner play straight up the fairway. Your approach is to a long green with out of bounds to the right.
Hole 18, 441 yards, par 4 A tough uphill par 4 to finish. Your line from the tee is the left half of the fairway. The long hitter can carry his second shot on to the green but, if your drive is short, aim to the right side of the fairway bunker and then play your approach shot to the centre of the green. The clubhouse and terrace are out of bounds.

Practice Facilities Excellent instruction is nothing without the facilities to put those newly-learnt skills into action, working on them until they become second nature. Here, Hindhead scores highly for the conscientious golfer looking to maximise their potential and lower their handicap to become the best they can possibly be. The Club’s practice facilities are open to anyone who has paid a green fee. For those wishing to work on their short game, there is a large putting green adjacent to the clubhouse that has been specially prepared to complement the subtle borrows of the course green as well as a short game area just 200 yards from the clubhouse.
The long game is equally well catered, with a landscaped 300-yard practice range situated behind the 17th green and 18th tee. There are designated areas for long hitting and approach play, allowing any club in the bag to be hit. The range is accessible by car and even has its own car park. Open Competitions Hindhead is an historic golf club with a rich heritage dating back to the founding of our Club in 1904. We know we have something special here and nothing gives us greater pleasure than to share the enjoyment of our magnificent course with people who may not have experienced it before. One of the ways in which we can do this is by staging a number of Open competitions spread throughout the season aimed at golfers from all walks of life.
The season usually tees off with the Mixed Open in mid-May before back-to-back Ladies Opens, one in May before a second in early July. The Devil’s Punchbowl is held in June. This is a 36-hole men’s amateur scratch strokeplay competition and is part of the Surrey order of merit. Past winners include Justin Rose. In late July the Senior Men’s Open takes place, an 18-hole singles Stableford-qualifying competition.
