He led his side to the Division Three championship in 1995/96, narrowly missing out on a second successive promotion before departing in 1997. Three years of lower mid-table obscurity followed before former Crawley Town boss John Maggs took over as manager in January 2000, taking a struggling side out of the relegation zone to Division Two runners-up in three seasons and a promotion play-off final appearance in 2004/05. Promotion to the Premier Division was achieved the following season with another runners-up finish and the club went 6 | www.horshamfc.co.uk

consolidated back at Isthmian League level. At this time planning permission for a new ground at Hop Oast was agreed and the club could start to look to the future with optimism again. In 2018-19 Horsham finished as runners-up to Cray Wanderers. With automatic promotion the right of only the champions, Horsham faced a play-off semi-final clash with Haywards Heath Town – the only side to have recorded a league double over them during the campaign – and duly won 3-0 to set up a home final with Ashford United. After a tense tie, played in front of over eight hundred spectators, Horsham won through 2-1 after extra-time to return to the Premier Division after an absence of seven years. A return to the Isthmian Premier League coincided with the opening of the fabulous new Camping World Community Stadium and during that first season The Hornets challenged at the top of the table and were still in and around the play-off places as the season was curtailed due to the Coronavirus pandemic. During the first half of the 2021-22 season the FA Cup First Round was reached for just the fourth time in the club’s history, with memorable wins over National League sides Eastbourne Borough and Woking along the way, before exiting with defeat at Football League club Carlisle United.

“After the old ground was sold, I put on my steward’s jacket to help out, and that is what I do today; greeting fans and sorting the parking. The matchday volunteers are a great team, and I really enjoy it”. Our Wednesday Group, led by longstanding and well-known HFC fan Pete Tanner, have undertaken numerous activities since we moved into The Camping World Community Stadium, in order to keep the ground spick and span and also to improve our facilities. One major development they have completed is the construction of a pedestrian footbridge over the stream in the access lane to the ground. By completing this task with volunteer (but very skilled) labour, the Wednesday Group saved the club money and created a new feature which helps to keep supporters safe as they arrive and leave the ground. Pete said: “It all started because Wednesday was the only day that Crawley weren’t training, so Terry Dickinson and Pete Little could get in to work on the pitch, and I could turn power off without disrupting anyone.

FA Cup Run 2021/22 The first half of the 2021-22 season was a rather special one for everyone concerned with Horsham Football Club. Despite some rather patchy league form the club had a memorable FA Cup run, which saw The Hornets reach the First Round Proper for only the fourth time in their history. When the FA Cup reaches the business end in the spring, it’s easy to forget that it all begins in August every year, with more than 700 clubs vying for glory. Ultimately the Qualifying competition only provides 32 places for non-league teams to join their richer Football League and premier league cousins in the competition proper. And by the time Horsham travelled to near neighbours Haywards Heath Town in the First Qualifying Round on 4th September more than 300 teams had already been knocked out of the competition. A 1-1 draw frustrated The Hornets who dominated for long periods, and had what appeared to be a perfectly good goal chalked off for offside. And so to a replay three days later, which the hosts won 2-0, with relative ease but in truth could have been by a far greater margin.

FA Cup Run 2021/22 The draw had been kind and if they could win through to the final qualifying round for the first time in 13 years Horsham would face National League Woking at the Camping World Community Stadium. An early goal from Eddie D’Sane had the Lardy Army in raptures and another staunch defensive display led to a 1-0 win and scenes of delirium on and off the pitch at the final whistle.
The result against Eastbourne meant that the Camping World Community Stadium became a hive of activity. Now for the big one. The result against Eastbourne meant that the Camping World Community Stadium became a hive of activity. A big crowd against Woking was a certainty, but how many tickets could we sell? Then there was the two division gap to our more illustrious opponents, with a cup pedigree all of their own. Could there be a shock and a chance to go toe-to-toe with Football League opposition in the First Round Proper? The band of club volunteers came together brilliantly to organise an exceptional event and a near capacity crowd of 1,927 arrived on Saturday 16th October, the majority more in hope than expectation. www.horshamfc.co.uk | 23

Tom Kavanagh stepped up to curl a stunning free-kick into the top corner, sparking pandemonium from the majority inside the ground. 26 | www.horshamfc.co.uk
Horsham fully matched their loftier opponents for the first twenty minutes or so, even forcing a couple of corners that simply cranked up the atmosphere being generated by two well-behaved and very vocal sets of supporters. The first major chance of the game also fell to The Hornets when Harding crossed for Dsane, who ought to have given his team the lead. From here Woking began to turn up the pressure and create chances of their own. In truth, the Cards were profligate, Horsham rode their luck and Sam Howes was a rock in the Horsham goal. As the clock ticked down, thoughts began to turn to a replay. Suddenly Lee Harding burst through the middle and was taken down by a Woking defender just outside

Youth Teams FOCUS ON… Jamie Irving In summer 2021 Jamie Irving, our Under 12s manager, was voted Sussex’s Grassroots Youth Coach of the Year, as part of the FA and McDonald’s Grassroots Football Awards. Like all our coaches, Jamie is a volunteer who puts everything into his role not for personal benefit but for the good of the local community and we agree that sort of commitment deserves rewarding, that’s why we were thrilled to learn of this award. “It was a huge shock but probably my best achievement in football and I feeling extremely proud to have won it” Jamie admitted. “The FA asks parents, referees and players from U5s to U16s to put forward names for Coach of the Year and it was a complete surprise when I received an email, telling me that I’d not only been nominated but actually won the regional award. “Horsham FC is the place in which all young players should aim to be, with fantastic facilities, supportive coaches across all age groups, a head of development that gets to know every player and second to none off-pitch support giving every player the best possible experience.”
A Sussex County FA spokesperson added
Jamie well and truly stood out from the crowd. He goes above and beyond for the children and their families. He has even purchased new coats for one or two of the children who couldn’t afford new ones in order for them not to be left out. www.horshamfc.co.uk | 41
