he Killiow Estate is nestled in a valley at the edge of the appropriately named village of Playing Place, so called because of it being an area of land designated in ancient times for the performance of plays and other forms of entertainment. We boast a superb 18 hole Golf Course with a 10 bay floodlit driving range, as well as a 9 hole Foot & Rugby Golf course. The well-maintained and picturesque parkland course presents a challenge to golfers of all standards, while the tranquil

setting offers the perfect opportunity to relax amongst the mature trees, natural water features and indigenous wildlife – including buzzards, swallows, woodpeckers, jays, dragonflies and, of course, rabbits. There are 4 par-5s, 5 par-3s and 9 par-4s, with the course measuring a fraction under 6,000 yards. Newly opened in 2018 we have 10 luxury holiday lodges on site. They are set in a spacious parkland environment on the site of the old academy golf course; the perfect relaxed retreat from the bustle of daily life.

Killiow offers visiting visitors a true Cornish welcome and affords the best of hospitality for your enjoyment, whether you are by yourself, a member of a small group or a large golf society. The modern clubhouse has a spacious lounge, dining room and function room, offering a variety of homecooked food include our chef’s speciality – delicious homemade desserts. We cater for events such as weddings, meetings, birthday parties and wakes. Pay us a visit and experience Killiow first hand.

T

he Killiow estate has been mentioned in History for over 1000 years and the name translates to ‘Hazel Groves’. The name was later adopted by the owners of the estate as their family name and their descendants remained resident until 1784. In the ensuing years, the estate passed between a number of wealthy local families, including Haweis, Daubuz and Penrose.

In the period between to two world wars, as with many estates, Killiow went in to decline through lack of funds. During WWII, the estate was used by the Britsh army and subsequently by the Royal Cornwall Infirmary. By 1948, the estate was in a poor state of repair and was only days away from being sold and used as the new local crematorium. Finally the estate was taken on by the Penrose family who spent nearly 50 years slowly restoring the estate to its former glory.

The extensive network of gardens and greenhouses were restored and Killiow became famous for Camelias. In the early 1980’s, the estate was opened to the public as a country park with exhibitions of rare breeds, fishing, country walks and many other rural attractions. In the 1988, Killiow opened a golf course as an extension of the other attractions. In 1998, the estate was purchased by Mike Sagin who is the current owner.

History of the estate 7

8 WELCOME

T

he original course, opened as a 9 hole par 28 course in 1988, weaved through the existing landscape of the estate. Also at this time, the Driving Range was opened. In the early 90’s 3 more fields on the estate were converted to golf course, creating an 18 hole par 59 course, which was extended again to a par 61 course in 1995.

When Mike Sagin purchased the estate in 1998, he set about creating a championship length course. He extended the course to the south, bringing in to play the fishing lake and splendid views of the manor house. This created a par 69 course at 5201 yards. In 2003, the course was extended further on the plateau at the top of the estate, where 5 longer holes were built to replace 5 shorter holes. This created a par 72

course at a length of 6141 yards. Four of the holes which were taken out of play were then maintained as an academy course, ideal for beginners and practice sessions. The final changes occurred in 2016, when the academy course made way for the new Luxury Lodges and an area of the golf course was converted into our Foot & Rugby Golf course. Today we have a par 71 course with a length of 5851 yards.

illiow is a parkland course set in the grounds of the Killiow Estate. It is populated with a mixture of mature trees dating back to the original estate together with a number of younger trees planted in the last 30 years.

The front nine holes are shorter in length, however the fairways are narrower. The trick is to find the fairways and avoid the trees. The third hole takes you in front of the old fishing lake with a number of nesting birds, looking uphill there are stunning views of the manor house. In season the manor gardens are ablaze with Camellias and Rhododendrons. The front nine also has a number of water hazards which need to be avoided.

The back nine opens out with some long par 4s and some reachable par 5s. Time to reach for the driver. Holes 11 to 16 are through old daffodil fields and we still get daffodils appearing in random places around the course. Holes 17 and 18 take you back to the old part of the course, with 2 original holes from the 1988 nine hole course.

About the Course 11

Hole 4

Hole 1 – Par 4 – 430 yards Perhaps the most difficult starting hole in Cornwall. A treelined fairway with out of bounds through the trees on the right. Its downhill all the way, but keep to the left for the best approach to the green. Hole 2 – Par 4 – 266 yards A driveable par 4, but to do so you will have to hit over the out of bounds on the right. There is a stream at just over 150 yards and lateral water hazard down the right with OOB behind. Aim for the gap in the hedge with a fairway wood and

you should have a short pitch up to the raised green. Hole 3 – Par 5 – 427 yards A short par 5, but you are hitting uphill followed by a dogleg left. A drive of 280 yards down the middle of the fairway will open up the green for a mid-iron approach. A real Birdie chance for the long hitters. Hole 4 – Par 3 – 122 yards A straight uphill par 3 with a wall in front of the green. Aim for the manor house.

12 Course Tour (hole by hole)

From the white tee you will need to avoid the cunningly placed tree. The green slopes from back to front, so don’t be scared to pitch it up there. Hole 5 – Par 4 – 301 yards Not a long hole, but everything slopes from left to right. Aim too far right however and you will encounter the magnetic juniper tree. The green again slopes left to right so hitting uphill from the right hand side of the fairway is the best way in. This hole takes you in front of the manor house. Don’t forget to pause to

Hole 6

admire the Camellias and Rhododendrons in season. Hole 6 – Par 4 – 329 yards A shortish downhill hole, but you need to find the fairway if you want to control your approach shot. The green slopes away from you and can be hard to find. Hole 7 – Par 4 – 374 yards This is one of the oldest holes on the course, and has ruined many a card over the years. A Tee shot of about 200 yards will take you to the top of the hill with a

view of the green. Any shorter and you are hitting blind. The green approach has the out of bounds Watergate Plantation down the right hand side and a pond short left. Hole 8 – Par 5 – 467 yards Not long but uphill all the way. There is out of bounds on the right hand side and a stream and multiple ponds on the left and side. Stay out of the water with accurate hitting is the way to play this hole.

A drive of 280 yards down the middle of the fairway will open up the green for a mid-iron approach. A real Birdie chance for the long hitters.

Course Tour (hole by hole) 13

Hole 9 – Par 3 – 152 yards An uphill par 3, with receptive green which slopes from back to front, allows you to attack this hole. It plays longer than it looks.

to get the driver out and go for it. Beware the rough on the left and right of the fairway will swallow your ball in spring and summer. The green slopes back to front and is receptive, but don’t be long.

Hole 10 – Par 3 – 150 yards Another uphill par 3 which plays even longer than 9. Trees line the fairway on both sides and a shot off the back of the green is unlikely to deliver rewards.

Hole 12 – par 4 – 399 yards A wide fairway, but OOB down the left must be avoided. Two trees 90 yards from the green will obstruct your approach shot if you are too far left or right.

Hole 11 – Par 4 – 405 yards A wide open fairway, with an invitation

Hole 13 – Par 5 – 527 yards A par 5 which is gently up hill. A very wide

14 Course Tour (hole by hole)

fairway makes this an inviting hole, but beware the OOB plantations on the left and the rough on the right. A large green which is inviting when the pin is at the front, but when it is at the back tucked behind the bunker, beware! Hole 14 – Par 3 – 210 yards A long par 3 with the OOB North Plantation on the left. A large green which can be deceptively difficult to find.

Hole 15 – Par 5 – 460 yards A short par 5 with a wide fairway presents a birdie opportunity to the longer hitters. The raised plateau green with a large bunker on the right can be difficult to find with a long fairway wood. Hole 16 – Par 4 – 442 yards A difficult hole which is justifiably a par 5 for the ladies. A tee shot of 210 yards will get you through the gap past the ‘lollipop tree’ (you’ll know it when you see it). Then a long second shot down the hill to a green sloping away from you. OOB on

both sides off the tee, then OOB on the left all the way to the green. Hole 17 – Par 3 – 167 yards The only intact hole from the original 9 hole course, although the tree that protects the right hand side of the green has grown some. Approaching the green from the left is the best route in, but beware the streams and ponds down that side that are waiting for your ball. The green slopes front to back and right to left with a large pond on the back left side of the green. You do the geometry.

Hole 18 – Par 4 – 266 yards A short par 4 to finish. Avoid the green and you will be fine. The small plantation to the right of the green is not out of bounds, but beware the spring if you want to keep your feet dry.
