amberhurst Golf Club is situated, just off the A21, within easy travelling distance of Tunbridge Wells, Hawkhurst, Cranbrook and Wadhurst. The Club’s 18 hole course is situated in parkland of outstanding beauty, on both sides of the River Teise, with spectacular views over the local Kent and Sussex countryside.
At first glance, at 6,448 yards off the back tees, the course looks deceptively easy but the subtle slopes and undulations test even the lowest handicapper. Master our signature 12th hole, with a carry over water, and you will be well on the way to a good round of golf!

HISTORY
I
n 1890 Colonel Henry Morland built the first nine-hole Lamberhurst Golf Course in the park of his family’s manor house Court Lodge. At the time there were less than ten golf courses in Kent against nearly 150 today. The membership was limited to fifty, the annual subscription was set at 10 shillings (50p). One of the regular visitors to the course in those early days was the poet Siegfried Sassoon, who described the course being maintained by sheep and with postage stamp size
greens which were particularly difficult to hit. Court Lodge was requisitioned by the Army during WW1 with the course closed, after which in 1920 the Squire requested that course maintenance be carried out by local tradesmen. Soon afterwards Hubert “Curly” Prowse was appointed the first Club Professional and in 1928 Henry Cotton played in an exhibition match with him at Lamberhurst. In 1932 Curly came 13th in the Open Championship played at Prince’s
/8
(won by Gene Sarazen) after which he left Lamberhurst to join the Pro Tour. On Saturday 7th April 1933 the members opened their ‘pavilion’, located near the present 15th tee. The course was again taken over by the Army for the duration of the Second World War so that in 1946 the Professional and Groundsman, Ernie Southerden together with his assistant John Jarvis had the mammoth task of restoring the course. In the following year Ernie Southerden beat the local Ryder
Cup player Sam King in an exhibition match at Lamberhurst, much to the delight of the members. When Ernie emigrated in 1950, Curly Prowse returned to Lamberhurst as Professional for the next twenty years. By 1960 the membership had reached 200 and not only was the nine hole course at saturation point, but the old ‘pavilion’ was now inadequate. On the 10th February 1968 a new Club House was opened on its present site, then in early 1970’s adjacent farmland was
acquired on leases from the Hussey and McAlpine families in order to extend the course. The Golf Course architect Frank Pennink (famous for his designs at Vilamoura (old), Royal Liverpool, Formby, and Vale do Lobo) was contracted to design the new layout and John Jarvis the Head Greenkeeper set to work to construct the extension to the course. On 24th May 1976, Christy O’Connor Snr and Christy Jnr together with Tegwen Perkins and Carole Redford played an exhibition
match to celebrate the official opening of the new 18 holes. The first Pro-Am was played in 1983 and was won by Bob Cameron (Senior European Tour player and former European Tour player) and second was Peter Mitchell (Senior European Tour player and former European Tour player). Today the course is in the best condition it has ever been in its history and it still retains the magnificent views first appreciated by Henry Morland over 125 years ago.

3rd Hole
P
ro’s Course Tips for each hole from Brian Impett, our PGA Golf Professional.
Hole 1 Par 4 Yards 348 - Church Walk “A good drive favouring the left side leaves a short iron into the green. Favour the right side of the flag to leave an easier putt.” Hole 2 Par 4 Yards 311 - Copper Beech “A well placed drive down the middle leaves a short iron into the green.”
Hole 3 Par 4 Yards 345 - Musdicks View “A good drive over the marker post should set you up for a short pitch into this tricky green.” Hole 4 Par 4 Yards 455 - Lady Well “A tough hole, requiring an accurate drive just left of centre. Either lay up with a mid iron or take on the green with a long iron or fairwaywood. A four is a great score.”
Hole 5 Par 5 Yards 507 - Bluebell Wood “Out of bounds down the left, woods down the right, take it easy. Your drive should favour the left side to open up the long dog-leg hole.” Hole 6 Par 4 Yards 381 - Oasts “For the average golfer this is a difficult up hill dog-leg par four. Your drive needs to be up the left hand side of the fairway if you cannot carry the hill. Par is a good score. Either lay up with a mid iron and chip and putt for your par or take on the green with a long iron or fairway wood. The longer hitter can make the top of the hill and play in a mid/short iron.”

11th Hole
Hole 7 Par 3 Yards 140 - Spray Hill “Can play anything from a 5 iron to a wedge depending on wind strength, direction and your ability.” Hole 8 Par 4 Yards 395 - Spring Shaw “Dog leg left, you need to make the corner with your drive for sight of the green. A well judged second shot will find this undulating green and the resulting four on your card.” Hole 9 Par 4 Yards 359 - Road Hole “Another dog-leg! A true risk reward hole. Either play safe with a fairway wood or long iron or take on the carry over the
road. The former leaves a mid/short iron into a tricky green, the latter a short pitch.” Hole 10 Par 4 Yards 383 - Marlpit Shaw “Wonderful views over the high Weald. A good drive right of centre and a short iron to a very tricky green.” Hole 11 Par 4 Yards 388 - Twin Oaks “A strong par 4 uphill, prevailing wind off the right. A good drive to the corner will leave a long iron or fairway wood into the green.”
Hole 12 Par 3 Yards 217 - The Pond “Our Signature Hole. All carry over the water, the rough, the bunkers, to a small green. A three is a good score here!” Hole 13 Par 5 Yards 487 - Teise Crossing “A good drive down the left side sets up a chance to go for the green (200 yard carry over the River Teise) and that rare bird an Eagle. Alternatively a nice drive down the middle, a five wood for position leaving a short pitch over the river to the green, two putts and another par!”

18th Hole
Hole 14 Par 5 Yards 477 - Brewery Hole “A straight forward par five. A good drive can leave a shot into the green with a long iron or fairway wood. Alternatively, play it as three shot hole, two putts and secure your par.” Hole 15 Par 4 Yards 435 - Morland “A testing par four (or five for the ladies) you will need a good drive and second shot to get home in two. The second shot plays longer than the yardage suggests.”
Hole 16 Par 4 Yards 370 - Crater “The sloping green is the defence of this hole. A premium is placed on your second shot. To make and hold the green requires all your skill. A four here is a bonus.” Hole 17 Par 3 Yards 156 - Old Firs “A good par three, uphill, tiered green, one more club than you think.”
Hole 18 Par 4 Yards 294 - Court Lodge “The final hole needs a well placed drive to leave a wedge into the green. A birdie chance!”
