Welcome

L

angley Park Golf Club, near Bromley in Kent, is a haven of peace and solitude which first opened for play in 1910. Steeped in history, Langley Park was originally designed by five-time Open Champion, John Henry Taylor. The course has been used as a Regional Open qualifier on numerous occasions and is well known for its exceptional greens; while there is something to interest golfers at all levels, with each hole offering its own unique challenge.

The golf course, though, is just one of our many facilities that await you. Our recently refurbished clubhouse offers the perfect place to relax with partners, friends and family before or after enjoying a round of golf.

We work hard at ensuring we provide everyone with a fantastic service, whether it’s on or off the golf course, so come and see what makes us special. We very much look forward to welcoming you to the Langley Park.

The Pro Shop stocks a full range of equipment and also has clubs and trolleys available for hire; while you’re guaranteed a warm welcome from our club Professional, Paul Sherman. The outstanding facilities lend themselves easily as an ideal venue for a wide range of functions including anniversaries, birthday parties and meetings.

About the Course

O

ur parkland course is set in 120 acres with 18 holes, containing only one par 5 and has a tough par of 69, setting a true test of golf. Over the years the course has been redesigned several times, often dictated by nature or technology. In between the major alterations, minor adjustments are constantly being made. Both World Wars caused a restructuring but for at least forty years the configuration of the course, not the length of holes, has remained virtually unchanged. Changes did take place in the 30s but the most notable was the basic move which

turned the course upside down in the early 20s, when the 1st became today’s 4th and the 18th became the 3rd. The fairways thread through flat, wooded parkland and the course is noted for its excellent greens and its long par fours, eight of which are over 400 yards. The par-three 18th has a picturesque lake that stretches almost from tee to green.

The never-ending search to better ourselves and to invest in our future continues with extensive drainage and irrigation work being carried out over the years, with water supplied from our own subterranean source, making our course playable all year round.

Though the course appears to be flat, this is by no means true, as the ground is consistently rising and falling in just the gentle folds and undulations that a good course needs, with all the greens containing “borrows in some degree.

The Old Rectory, 22 Gates Green Road, West Wickham, Kent BR4 9JW

About the Course Continued The hard work of our full-time green-keeping staff and substantial investment in acquiring for them the very best equipment to help them perform their task has reaped its rewards.

Water comes into play on several holes, with a number of friendly-placed ditches and brooks, while the more than adequate bunkering makes the course a challenge for golfers of all abilities.

While those enjoying a good day with the flat stick are likely to prosper, there are a number of testing holes that examine all parts of one’s game.

Our signature hole is the picturesque 18th, with views over the lake where a par to finish with is most welcome.

The par four seventh, for example, is the toughest hole for good reason. At 444 yards even off the yellow tees it requires a long accurate drive round the left-hand dog-leg before dealing with two treacherous bunkers in front of the green.

Our course is also home to many plant and animal species, with mature trees stretching throughout the course. Small mammals, bats, birds and exotic fish call our course home and offer an enjoyable distraction from your round of golf.

History

S

ome names now legendary in the world of golf are forever linked with Langley Park golf course.

With his achievements forever plastering the walls at the World Golf Hall of Fame, what better person to be charged with crafting a golfing masterpiece than John Henry Taylor. A member of the fabled Great Triumvirate, J.H.Taylor was a five-time winner of The Open Championship, as well as adding The French and German Open to his illustrious career achievements. While Taylor was a driving force in the formation of the Professional Golfers’ Association in Britain, he also spent many of the years following his playing career

designing and remodelling golf courses around Britain. Langley Park was one of those courses and even today it still maintains many of the original designs J.H.Taylor implemented. Formerly part of the Goodhart Estate, it was originally built as a parkland site and still retains much of the original flat terrain that is dominated by maturing oak trees. With over 100 years of history, the Club has produced many fine golfers throughout the years including Peter Hedges, Toby Shannon, Danny Holmes, Roger Chapman, recent winner of the ‘2012 US Senior PGA Championship’ and the ‘2012 US Senior Open Championship,’and, most notably, Henry Cotton.

No history of Langley Park would be complete without a mention of the name Cotton, the professional golfer here from 1926 to 1933. After seven years with the Club, he decided to leave and won his first Open Championship the following year. He added two more to his career tally before being inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1980. On July 6, 1987 Peter Mitchell set the Professional course record after his remarkable round of 65.The Club celebrated its centenary in 2010 with a number of special events in the Clubhouse, some of which have remained part of our extensive list of annual fixtures.

Course Guide

I

f you have never played at Langley Park Golf Club before you are in for a treat. Make the most of your trip by learning about some of the pitfalls that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you follow our hole-by-hole tour.

12 www.langleyparkgolf.co.uk

Hole 1, 416 yards, par 4 The first tee shot of the course requires a well-placed drive that must be kept to the left-hand side of the fairway to enable a clear approach to the green for the second shot.

Hole 3, 440 yards, par 4 A tough par four that is split by a small stream. Longer hitters are in with a good chance to hit over the stream from the tee shot, leaving a short second shot to reach the green.

Hole 2, 364 yards, par 4 A precise shot is required and longer hitters often play a shorter club from the tee to achieve this. A short to medium iron usually sees the ball on or close to the green but be careful to stay central, as the left and rightsided bunkers are treacherous.

Hole 4, 448 yards, par 4 A long par four needing two good shots to reach the green from the tee. Longer hitters need to be wary of the bunker lurking down the righthand side. When approaching the green, beware of the three bunkers that surround it.

Hole 5, 196 yards, par 3 A good drive on this par three should see you on or close to the green. With a big two-tier green, being on the correct level is a must if you are to have a good chance of getting your par.

Hole 7, 446 yards, par 4 Rated as the hardest hole on the course, your tee shot will have to be aimed round the lefthand dog-leg. Your second shot should put you on to the green but be cautious of the two treacherous bunkers in front of the green.

Hole 6, 376 yards, par 4 A slight dog-leg to the right, this hole is one of the few shorter par fours. With a wellbunkered green, par is difficult to obtain.

Hole 8, 411 yards, par 4 A straightforward par four but beware the lateral ditches either side of the fairway. The second shot is to a well-guarded green that slopes from left to right.

Hole 9, 367 yards, par 4 A short par four with a slight right-hand dog-leg, this is a very big green from front to back so correct selection of the club for your second shot is very important.

www.langleyparkgolf.co.uk 13

Course Guide Continued Hole 10, 158 yards, par 3 Beware, there is some 20 yards of invisible ground beyond the crossbunker so make allowances for this. The green is very undulating making putting very interesting.

Hole 12, 459 yards, par 4 At first sight this long, straight par four appears no real trouble butits 459 yards and undulating green can make it more difficult than it appears.

Hole 11, 341 yards, par 4 This is a hole where a fairway wood or an iron from the tee is a better option, rather than risk hitting a driver behind the conifers that flank either side of the fairway, leaving a mid to short iron shot to the green.

Hole 13, 163 yards, par 3 Although not a long hole, this par three contains a narrow green that is well bunkered making par a decent score.

14 www.langleyparkgolf.co.uk

Hole 14, 472 yards, par 5 The only par five on the course, long hitters can reach the well-guarded green in two shots, although beware, a poor second shot can be caught by the deep fairway bunker on the right. Hole 15, 446 yards, par 4 One of the hardest driving holes on the course, its narrow fairway and well-bunkered green make this a difficult hole to make par.

Hole 16, 367 yards, par 4 Although not a long hole, there is a ditch that runs across the fairway and this has to be negotiated with the approach shot to the green that has quite a slope from back to front.

Hole 18, 162 yards, par 3 A picturesque par three over a small lake makes this a wonderful hole to finish on, with a par here always well received.

Hole 17, 435 yards, par 4 From the back tee this becomes a very difficult shot with out of bounds down the right-hand side ready to penalise that wayward drive, if successful here then you are left with a long second shot to a closely guarded green.

Custom Fitting

T

here has been a growing realisation in recent times that golfing tuition ought to go handin-hand with equipment that allows each player to make the absolute utmost of whatever level of natural talent they possess. Clubs merely bought off the shelf will be of a standard specification but unfortunately golfers are not, coming in all shapes and sizes. The reality is that a golfer could have a perfectly acceptable technique but still be held back because their clubs are not entirely suitable to their swing.

This is where custom fitting comes in, a relatively new phenomenon that allows a set of clubs to be built to marry with each golfer’s individual physique and swing characteristics.

Even the top touring professionals struggle to maintain the same fundamentally sound swing characteristics every time, so it is a lot to ask for the average golfer to do likewise.

Custom fitting is something that we take seriously here at Langley Park and we pride ourselves in what we do. We offer a full and extensive range of products all available for custom fitting.

Customising the clubs to position the golfer in the ideal position for their physical characteristics will train the golfer to address the ball with the correct posture and swing along the ideal swing plane, which all adds up to the correct impact position and better scores.

This service costs less than you think and can bring about a dramatic improvement in ball striking.

Fine Dining

L

angley Park is no less proud of the hospitality it is able to offer than it is of its magnificent course or wonderful facilities. Members and guests alike are able to enjoy a wide selection of food throughout the day seven days a week and they never go hungry, starting with breakfast which is generally served from around 10am. For superior one, two or three-course meals, visit our restaurant which offers outstanding choice at very reasonable prices.

The splendid venue is also where our golfing teams host their rivals from other clubs and where the fierce but good-natured competition on the course quickly gives way to post-match banter and where longstanding friendships are struck or rekindled. At Langley Park we have a wide range of menus and packages to suit all events and budgets, from a family Sunday Lunch celebration to an a la carte meal or the chef’s selection of cheese and biscuits.

In our bar the House Manager is always keen to ensure we are well stocked with exciting wines and beers that are competitively priced.

We appreciate no two functions are the same and we will always try and accommodate any personal requests where possible. Whether it is an all-day celebration or a lunchtime or evening reception – whatever the occasion you will find us willing and accommodating hosts.

Visitors

V

isitors are always welcome at Langley Park where we endeavour to provide a warm welcome and a day out to remember. You do not have to be a golfer to be able to spend an enjoyable time with us.

You will find the course provides an interesting challenge for golfers of all abilities. The atmosphere on course is serene with a sense of solitude, despite its close proximity to the centre of London.

The well-stocked Pro Shop will allow you to stock up on consumables and to browse the wide range of golf equipment and clothing. The staff can arrange for one-on-one tuition should you wish to brush up your skills before play. Golf trolleys and electric buggies are available, although booking in advance is advisable.

Please take a moment to visit our website and read our rules on dress regulations to ensure your visit runs as smoothly as possible. A minimum standard of smart casual dress is required in all areas of the clubhouse at all times.

After the game, head to the clubhouse where you can relax with companions in the comfortable lounge or the patio area, where you can viewthe stunning course as players negotiate the treacherous 18th hole. A full range of catering facilities is also available.

M

embers at Langley Park enjoy a full programme of golf throughout the year. There are fixtures against other clubs, together with much competition to be enjoyed alongside fellow members, some for silverware and some of a more social nature.

Men This is a very busy and vibrant section that organises qualifying and knockout competitions throughout the year. We offer a whole range of membership options with full, five-day, six-day and intermediate categories open to anyone. Regular roll-up contests are always well supported and keenly fought, ensuring that all our members have the competitive golf they demand. The Club plays in many friendlies, both men and mixed, while there are also men’s

and mixed knockout competitions running throughout the summer and winter. While there is a keen focus on competitive golf – and a likely contributory factor as to why we have competed so well in the County’s team competitions – balance is always a good thing. We provide regular social golf where the only thing on offer is renewing friendships and perhaps a drink in the bar afterwards for the winner.

Ladies The Ladies are a very friendly group who enjoy each other’s company asmuch as a good game of golf. We have an active Ladies section that is run by a committee of 12 members, headed by the Ladies’ Captain. We cater for the serious golfer with weekly medals and qualifying Stablefords, while we also have fun competitions for those less interested in their handicaps.

Our members enter many external Kent County Ladies (KCLGA) and national competitions, both at an individual and team level that gives members the opportunity to play different courses and meet other likeminded golfers. We hold competitions with local clubs at all handicap levels and there are considerable opportunities for mixed golf.

Playing Categories Continued Veterans The Club has a large and very lively bunch of Veteran or Senior Golfers consisting of playing and non-playing members but we always have room for more. The section enters a team of 12 players in the Society of Kent Veterans League Division Two and were champions in 2010 and 2011. Matches are played on a home and away basis against local clubs with the winners of the league then competing against the winners of the other Kent leagues in the finals.

Membership of the affectionately named ‘Ancient Britons’ section is open to Langley Park members that are at least 60 years old, playing 12 friendly matches a year against local clubs on a home and away basis. The Langley Park Veterans ‘Team Open’ is held in May when we entertain 32 teams from Kent and the surrounding counties, consisting of three members from the visiting clubs with one Langley Park veteran in each team.

On Fridays between March and September, there is a ‘roll-up’ open to all members of the Veterans section. The best five scores are calculated over these months and the winner receives ‘The Dennis Arnold Trophy’. The highlights of the veterans’ year is the annual dinner held in either March or April, that is always well supported.

A Haven for Wildlife

T

he course, set within 120 acres, is home to many plant and animal species. When it was established there was only a scattering of trees, today there are mature trees throughout the course.

Small mammals, bats and birds often use the holes and slits in trunks and boughs for nesting and roosting. These trees are also important for climbing plants, such as ivy, honeysuckle and fungi, which themselves may host a number of associated invertebrates.

These ancient trees, both living and in their dead state, are important for wildlife such as beetles, spiders and other invertebrates that inhabit dead wood.

If playing later in the day, you may be lucky enough to spot a Stag Beetle, Brit¬ain’s largest ground-living beetle, between 5-8cm in length.

The lake and surrounding area are home to Ducks, Moorhen and Heron that nestle amongst the reeds. The nest boxes on the island in the lake by the 18th have proved a great success, with Moorhens regularly using them. If you are unlucky enough to put your ball in the water by the 12th or 18th you may have the chance to see some of the species that live below the surface. Look out for the Koi carp, Trout, Perch, Roach or Rudd, as well as the Freshwater Mussels.

A common sight (and sound) is that of the Parakeets, which add a tropical splash of colour on the course. Often found in flocks, numbering hundreds at a roost site, they are the UK’s only naturalised parrots.
