Welcome
T
ravelling west along the A 30, the market town of Launceston, “the gateway to Cornwall”, is 42 miles from Exeter and is reached shortly after crossing the River Tamar, which forms the border between Devon and Cornwall. Launceston Golf Club is situated a mile from the A30 at St Stephens and is home to one of the finest 18 hole parkland courses in the South West and has a deserved reputation for being a welcoming and
friendly Club and a great venue for a days’ golf. It offers an excellent and challenging round of golf to all standards of golfers on a mature and beautifully maintained course. The 8th green is the highest in Cornwall and the elevated levels offer spectacular countryside views over both Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor, while in the foreground there are majestic views of our historic town and castle.
There are thriving Men’s, Ladies, Senior and Junior sections with weekly competitions and the Club has recently purchased land adjacent to the course to improve and develop additional practice facilities. Although Launceston Golf Club is a members Club, the Clubhouse bar and restaurant facilities are open to everyone and are also available for private functions.

History
T
he Golf Club traces its history to before the First World War in 1909 but like many sporting clubs had a hiatus until after the war had ended, so although we trace our roots to 1909 we acknowledge 1927 as our official opening and in 2017 we celebrate 90 years.
The original 1909 layout was on part of the land we now occupy, leased then as now from Werrington Park Estates. This and the subsequent 1927 nine hole course were situated on the western end of the current layout with a wooden clubhouse standing near the site of the existing 16th green.
6 | www.launcestongolfclub.co.uk
Players had to play over fences and hedges and occasionally animals, as the land was shared with local farmers. Part of the land was used for a racecourse after the war and also for a football pitch for a local school.
In 1927 a group of enthusiastic people formed a committee to resurrect a golf club and on 2nd June 1927 the course was opened. This nine holes layout was different than the original in 1909 and evolved over the years until the 1960s when the members drew up plans to extend the course to 18 holes and to move into a “new” clubhouse being a converted barn on the eastern end of the land that would be used to lengthen the course.
Renowned golf course designer J. Hamilton Stutt, who later designed courses at St.Mellion (Old course), Meon Valley and Woodbury Park, was called in to provide designs for the course extension and the move to the new layout was completed fully in 1972.
It is only fair to recognise at this point the hard work put in by the members in the 1960s & 1970s in taking on the task of increasing the size of the course. We owe them a huge debt of thanks, particularly Peter Rickard, whose 2015 book “A History of Launceston Golf Club” provided much of the information here.

particularly for the player who moves the ball to the right as a large tree interferes with your line. The shot to the green can be difficult as the green slopes from left to right, but a ball played just to the left of the green doesn’t seem to break onto the green as you would expect.

7th - Out of bounds to the left of this par 4 pushes the player towards trees on the right, but a well- placed tee shot can give a very real birdie chance.
9th - An interesting par 3 where your tee shot can be very much influenced by the large tree on the left. Again the views from the tee are stunning. 10th - First of two side by side par 4 holes, this one goes downhill. The marker post is a good line off the tee and a look at the hole from the lookout in front of the tee can help form a picture of what lies ahead.

course tour and key holes 11th - What goes down has to come up again and this climbs back up the hill with two steep slopes. Because of the severity of the slope you will need more club for the shot to the green.
13th - Very much a signature hole with a tee shot played down to a fairway which doglegs slightly right. The bold shot is to bite off as much of the dogleg by aiming at the green, but beware if you push it right or don’t carry far enough as gorse awaits!
14th - A blind shot on this par 4 whose fairway slopes down to the right so holding the fairway can be tricky. There is a gap in the trees on the skyline on the left of the fairway, hit it straight at that and you may be on the cut grass!
12th - A short par 3 banked on the right, but beware there is a grass bunker in the slope to stop your ball bouncing down.

course tour and key holes 15th - Another signature hole, a downhill par 3 bunkered on either side, but with great views of the town beyond. Putting across this green you’ll be surprised it is almost level!
16th - From the white tees an imposing drive between two trees and over a low hedge. This is a long par 4 and can be even more difficult in the face of the prevailing wind. You’ll do well to make par here.
17th - Another long par 3 protected front left by a bunker and be careful if your shot runs off the green to the right as another one lurks there too. 18th - A great par 5 to finish. Watch out for the ditch on the left and trees and O/B on the right. A tight approach to the green, but a finishing birdie is definitely on.
