WELCOME Golf has been played on our downland course since 1896. Excellent drainage and professional maintenance guarantee play all year round, always on the main greens and tees. The new irrigation system means the greens are as good in the summer as they have always been in the winter. As a result, members get full value from their subscription and many individual visitors and societies are attracted to the course. Our elevated location provides panoramic views of the Sussex countryside in all compass directions. The challenge presented
by the 6,253-yard course is enhanced by undulating fairways and greens, and by the elements. Members and visitors also have access to a five-bay driving range and practice greens for chipping and putting. Recent research from England Golf states that playing golf, can increase significantly one’s well-being, health and actually extend your life expectancy.

COURSE GUIDE
Hole 1 - Par 4 - SI 9 • 340 • 328 • 308 A good line from the tee is at the right hand 150 yard marker as the fairway falls to the left. The second shot plays longer than the yardage and should favour the right half of the green. Anything pitching short or left risks finding the bunker or sweeping away from the green leaving a difficult pitch.
6 | LEWES GOLF CLUB
Hole 2 - Par 4 - SI 3 • 381 • 370 • 344 The marker pole is a good line from the tee but if you miss, left is better than right. The second shot needs to be straight as the green is an upturned saucer with run offs on either side. If you find yourself past the flag approach your putt with care. It is likely to be very quick!
Hole 3 - Par 4 - SI 13 • 335 • 310 • 271 The tee shot needs to negotiate the fairway bunkers. Either play past them to the left or, if laying up, the line is towards the right edge of the right hand of the two. The conservative line for the approach shot is to run it in from the left down the slope to the side of the green.
Hole 4 - Par 3 - SI 17 • 131 • 127 • 92 The yardage of this hole can be ignored. It plays longer than it appears and distance control is vital. Going past the pin will leave a treacherous putt down the hill. With a bunker guarding the right half of the green, short left is not a bad place to finish.
Hole 5 - Par 4 - SI 5 • 341 • 335 • 328 The fairway bunkers are in play from the tee for a long tee shot or with the second shot if you don’t get the drive away. The safe play is to lay up. The fairway falls significantly to the right. Even so the right hand rough is not a bad place to hit your approach into the long narrow green.
Hole 6 - Par 3 - SI 15 • 138 • 130 • 114 A pretty par three flanked by gorse on all sides. The 6th will usually play half a club more than the 4th hole and is guarded to the left and right with bunkers. The right half of the green is the line and the back of the green is the safe spot to play for.
LEWES GOLF CLUB | 7
COURSE GUIDE CONTINUED
Hole 7 - Par 5 - SI 11 • 529 • 506 • 445 The drive should be played left of the marker post to allow for the camber in the fairway. The wind turbine beyond the green looms large and the second shot needs to stay right of it. Pitch the approach shot short of the green as it runs away from you from front to back.
8 | LEWES GOLF CLUB
Hole 8 - Par 4 - SI 1 • 397 • 368 • 343 Into the prevailing wind, this is a tough par 4. A tee shot played to the left half of the fairway is the best line and will give you a better view of the green for your second shot. A bunker guards the front left of the green. Once on the green you are at the summit of the course. Enjoy the view!
Hole 9 - Par 5 - SI 7 • 552 • 515 • 504 The drive is relatively straightforward, but the blind second shot requires some thought. It is worth walking to the ridge to get a line if unfamiliar with the course. The approach is tricky as any shot left will be swept into the gulley leaving a difficult up and down.
Hole 10 - Par 4 - SI 16 • 317 • 311 • 239 This is the shortest par 4 on the course but plays anything but. All uphill, the second shot needs to pitch up to the green as anything landing short tends to stay there. The pin position on this twotier green makes a big difference, worth noting as you pass it on the 9th.
Hole 11 - Par 4 - SI 8 • 347 • 332 • 324 The further you hit the drive on this hole the wider the fairway. The second shot should favour the left side as the ball will gather onto the green from here. It is better to land short of this green as it is only 15 paces from front to back and very easy to run through.
Hole 12 - Par 3 - SI 14 • 196 • 186 • 143 Turning for home, this is a beautiful downhill par 3, the longest of the four par-3 holes on the course, with a narrow green. Do not miss it left where a ‘blind’ bunker awaits the wayward shot and the surrounding terrain leaves a tricky shot to get close to the hole’. The line is just inside the right-hand grass bunker use the contours to let the ball feed onto the green. LEWES GOLF CLUB | 9
COURSE GUIDE
CONTINUED
Hole 13 - Par 4 - SI 10 • 381 • 348 • 326 The prevailing breeze makes this a testing tee shot that narrows the further you hit. Favour the right-hand side. Anything left will be blocked out by the trees that flank that side of the fairway. The right hand corner of the green is a good line for your approach. Pitch short of the green and watch it feed towards the hole.
10 | LEWES GOLF CLUB
Hole 14 - Par 4 - SI 2 • 386 • 341 • 320 This is a straight hole but the tee shot is a tough one with a bunker left and gorse to the right. The right-hand edge of the bunker is a good line as the ridge in the fairway will feed the ball into the centre. The second shot plays uphill and an extra club is required.
Hole 15 - Par 4 - SI 4 • 403 • 392 • 366 A dog leg to the right, requiring a tee shot that favours the left half of the fairway to open up the green for the second shot. The second shot plays shorter than the yardage. A ball pitched short will feed down to the large putting surface that slopes heavily from right to left.

Hole 16 - Par 5 - SI 18 • 503 • 492 • 472 Into the prevailing wind the marker post is a good line. Longer hitters may aim over the mound to the right, bringing the green into range for the second shot. A birdie opportunity, but out of bounds to the right and gorse to the left gives little margin for error with the second shot. The green is the flattest on the course but subtle breaks make it tricky to read.
Hole 17 - Par 3 - SI 12 • 156 • 149 • 143 A bunker guards to the right of this very small green. The ball will feed in from the left edge. The putting surface tilts from left to right towards the town. Allow plenty of borrow for your putts, even from close range.
Hole 18 - Par 4 - SI 6 • 426 • 395 • 372 Aim at the Pro Shop from the tee as the ball will fall to the right. The approach shot needs to land left of the bunkers that sit 20 yards short of the green. The ball will feed down from there. If the flag is on the top don’t miss it left trying to get the ball close. Many shots have been wasted this way. Play to the bottom tier and concentrate on two-putting.

LADIES’ GOLF The Ladies’ section has many playing members who enjoy the same rights and privileges as the men. We have our own Ladies’ Committee, but we are also well represented on all club committees as well as the main club council, where two directors of the club are lady members.
22 | LEWES GOLF CLUB
We welcome ladies of all golfing ability, whether you already have a handicap or you are a complete novice. You will be introduced to all the other ladies and given plenty of encouragement to make your golf more enjoyable. We have regular competitions which we play on a Wednesday morning and for which tee times are reserved. There are also ladies or mixed competitions most Sundays. Additionally, many ladies play in the regular weekend competitions which are fully integrated with the men.
Qualifying monthly medals are held from February to November on Wednesdays and all year round at the weekends. The ladies play in the county divisions and friendly matches with other golf clubs. We also send representative teams to major county competitions such as the Morrice Foursomes, Kathleen Rider Foursomes, the Jerdein Memorial Salver and the Presidents Team Trophy.
Mixed competitions and social events are held throughout the year and are well supported. We also play fun matches with members of the senior section. The Ladies’ Section has earned a well-deserved reputation for being very friendly and welcoming. Come along and meet us and see for yourself.
LEWES GOLF CLUB | 23
SENIOR GOLF (LOGS) The club has had a Seniors’ Section for golfers over 55 since 1988. It is called the LOGS (Lewes Old Golfers Section), a name that has become firmly established as an essential part of the culture of the club.
We enter senior teams in the Sussex Winter League and the Sussex County Golf Union’s Cyril Blake and Gilbert Print competitions. Most importantly of all, we organise a twice weekly roll-up throughout the year on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The LOGS organise a wide range of activities for our Senior members - 30 inter-club matches, an Annual Championship, an annual invitation event, a summer-long eclectic, knock-out competitions, a Christmas competition, matches with the Ladies’ Section, Away Days and regular Stableford competitions.
Every Tuesday and Thursday, we meet in the clubhouse at around 9.30 for a cup of coffee and a chat, about everything that Seniors worldwide like to talk about! We draw for playing partners at 10.15 and start at 10.30.
24 | LEWES GOLF CLUB
Lewes has a number of advantages for the members of this section:-
roll-up sessions for those who are finding the full 18 holes too challenging.
Due to the superb draining chalk soil it is possible to play throughout the year, generally without buggy or trolley bans and not end up covered in mud, and there are never any temporary greens or tee mats. The new irrigation system installed early in 2015 is helping to ensure that the greens remain in excellent condition summer and winter alike. In addition, we are experimenting with a 12-hole short course playable during the
So, if you are looking for friendly, competitive golf on a wellestablished (122-year-old) course with outstanding views, look no further, come and join us.
