History Lingdale Golf Club was formed in 1966 when Founder and Past President, David Tucker, created the original 9 holes which then opened in 1967. In 1968 ownership was passed to the Brush Company of Loughborough. Then in 1982 the members of the golf club took the momentous step of purchasing the course from the Brush. Development of a further nine holes began in 1988 with the beautiful but challenging eighteenhole course we know today opening in 1992. The golf course is 6,545 yards off the white tees 6 Lingdale Golf Club

and 5,441 yards off the red tees and is considered by many to be one of, if not, the best golf course within Leicestershire with Peter Allis during Open commentary once describing Lingdale Golf Club as ‘A Hidden Gem in the Midlands’. Lingdale Golf Club has continued with its development in recent years with a number of large scale projects aimed at continuing to develop and improve the golf club and the experience for members and visitors alike. Projects which have been completed in recent years include extensive drainage work throughout the golf course, the re-laying of all

eighteen greens to USPGA specification and most recently the introduction of the new clubhouse. This continued development and growth in the reputation of Lingdale has been rewarded with a number of prestigious events being held at Lingdale in recent years. The highlight of this was in 2010 when the golf club was selected to host the English Golf Unions County Championship Qualifying rounds. This event saw the future Ryder Cup player, Andy Sullivan represent his county. During 2017 Lingdale Golf Club celebrated its 50th Anniversary which saw a number of special www.lingdalegolfclub.co.uk

celebrations held at the golf club. This included a ‘Back In Time’ event, a Gala Dinner, 50th Anniversary Members competition and a special 50th Anniversary Open competition. Lingdale was also selected to host three prestigious Midland Golf events, the Midland Golf Union Seniors Autumn Meeting, the Society of Past Golf Captain’s four counties event and the Ladies Midland Queen of Clubs event. All of these events hosted at Lingdale Golf Club further allowed the golf club to showcase and cement its position as a leading golf club within the County and the Midlands. Lingdale Golf Club 7

Membership at Lingdale Golf Club continued We also recognise that the future of our game is in the hands of our junior golfers and we currently offer two types of junior membership. These are a full playing junior membership for those more established juniors who are now wanting to compete in club competitions and represent the club or an academy membership for those who are new to the game. The academy offers the opportunity to attend weekly sessions during the summer season and also compete in junior club competitions.

Course Guide Hole 1 – Par 4, 400 yards The opening hole requires an accurate tee shot over the marker post situated in the middle of the fairway. An accurate tee shot will find a sloping fairway leaving a straightforward down hill approach into one of the flatter greens on the golf course. But beware, the green slopes from front to back so make sure your clubbing is right otherwise you will run through the back of the green. Despite its length due to the sloping fairway this hole does provide a good opportunity to get your round underway with a par.

www.lingdalegolfclub.co.uk

LINGDGC_CLUB4_sian_8.12.17_52pp.indd 23

Hole 2 – Par 4, 401 yards The second hole although only one yard further than the first does certainly play much harder. The hole doglegs almost ninety degrees to the left. This dogleg leaves players with two choices to either play straight down leaving a shot of about two hundred yards into a bunkered green or to take on the trees and the out of bounds protecting the angle of the dog leg. Although riskier, this shot will be rewarded with a much shorter approach to the green. The green is a two-tiered raised green so make sure that you have the right club for your approach shot otherwise you may find yourself in a tricky position, with three putts a distinct possibility.

Course Guide Hole 3 – Par 3, 206 yards This third hole at Lingdale is a tough par three measuring over two hundred yards which always plays its full distance. Out of bounds is all the way down the left-hand side of the hole with the natural contours of the land sloping away to the right with a large bunker awaiting any mishit shots. Another bunker cuts into the middle of the golf hole at one hundred and seventy yards with the perfect shot being a straight shot which clears this and runs into the middle of the large green. A good shot here will be rewarded with a par and you may then breath a sigh of relief as you have now played the opening three holes which Tony Jacklin, once described as the toughest opening holes in the Midlands.

www.lingdalegolfclub.co.uk

LINGDGC_CLUB4_sian_8.12.17_52pp.indd 25

Hole 4 – Par 5, 483 yards The fourth hole is the first of three par fives at Lingdale and despite playing under five hundred yards it is not a hole which is reached very often in two shots. The hole once again doglegs at ninety degrees following the tee shot. The tee shot requires a shot of about two hundred yards to lay up to the elbow of the dogleg which is protected by a large oak tree and ditch which meanders its way across the fairway. Another solid shot is then required which will leave an approach shot of under one hundred and fifty yards to a green which is well protected by two bunkers and a large pond. Despite this it is a great chance to make a par.

Course Guide Hole 5 – Par 4, 338 yards The fifth hole although short in length does require all players to think about their course management due to a large pond which crosses the fairway at just over two hundred yards. The sensible play is a strategic lay up to the right-hand side of the fairway which will leave a straight forward approach to a raised green sloping into you. However, with trees either side of the fairway accuracy off of the tee is certainly required if you want to be able to see the green for your approach. Despite being a straight forward approach anything left of the green will leave a very difficult ‘up and down’ if you want to save your par.

www.lingdalegolfclub.co.uk

LINGDGC_CLUB4_sian_8.12.17_52pp.indd 27

Hole 6 – Par 4, 330 yards The sixth hole is one of the shortest par fours on the golf course but does have one of the narrowest fairways. This hole plays as a slight dog leg to the right. A straight tee shot will not find any trouble but a slight fade to run with the camber of the fairway will put you in a great position to attack the flag on this large undulating green. However, beware of the club selection when hitting your approach into this green as getting the wrong club will leave you with a very tricky two putt on a green which can be very fast if you are on the wrong side of the hole. When you reach the green, why not take a minute to look back down the fairway and see the natural beauty which Lingdale offers.

Course Guide Hole 7 – Par 3, 157 yards This hole offers a great opportunity for players to make a par and for those on a day out is a great hole to have a ‘Nearest The Pin’ on. The hole does play slightly downhill but with three bunkers protecting this green including a large bunker on the right-hand side, hitting the correct club is vitally important. The recommended play would be the middle of the green which will give you a great chance for a birdie on this short par three. Once you have finished this hole you can now begin to think about your next challenge which is the most daunting tee shot of the round

www.lingdalegolfclub.co.uk

LINGDGC_CLUB4_sian_8.12.17_52pp.indd 29

Hole 8 – Par 5, 552 yards This hole is the stroke index one at Lingdale which plays at just over five hundred and fifty yards long with a slight dogleg to the right at approximately two hundred yards from the green. Due to the length of the hole a driver is the required club off the tee but beware of the out of bounds which runs all the way down the left of the hole and the trees which protect the right-hand side. A good tee shot to the centre of the sloping fairway will leave you in a good position to hit your next shot up the middle of the fairway leaving a clear approach shot into this large green. Although protected by a bunker either side it is a wide approach to the green but beware of the slope which runs down to the green as a ball pitching on this may run through the back. A par is always a good score on this hole.

Course Guide Hole 9 – Par 4, 402 yards The ninth hole is a ninety-degree dog leg to the right. The fairway can be seen straight down and a straight tee shot of approximately one hundred and eighty yards is the safe play but will then require a second shot of two hundred yards to find the green. However, there is another way to play this hole which is to take on the trees, the pond and the out of bounds and cut off the corner. This will significantly reduce the length of the hole and make par or even birdie a possibility but players must be mindful not to be too aggressive with their chosen line. The second shot is played to a sloping green protected by three bunkers. Club selection is vitally important particularly if a red flag is in use as a putt back down this green can be very quick.

www.lingdalegolfclub.co.uk

LINGDGC_CLUB4_sian_8.12.17_52pp.indd 31

Hole 10 – Par 4, 428 yards The tenth hole is one of the longest par fours at Lingdale. It is a straight golf hole which has a ditch crossing the fairway at two hundred and seventy yards off the tee. This makes club selection off the tee important particularly during the summer months when the ball is running. Once you have negotiated the tee shot a par is still not guaranteed with a long approach shot left to a slightly raised green with nothing short of a well struck shot required. The natural lie of the land will see everything run in from the right-hand side but beware to not over do this as a large bunker awaits on the left-hand side of this green.

Course Guide Hole 11 – Par 4, 409 yards The eleventh hole is a great test of your driving ability and with the hole measuring over four hundred yards a good tee shot is required. The fairway slopes significantly from right to left meaning a tee shot down the right-hand side of the fairway is required in order to give you a clear approach to the tricky green. Anything which is hit down the left of the fairway will find the left rough with anything further left being blocked out by trees. The green has a false front which will see anything short running off the front but beware if you go beyond the flag as a tricky two putt will await you. Another hole where par is a great score.

LINGDGC_CLUB4_sian_8.12.17_52pp.indd 33

Hole 12 – Par 4, 279 yards The twelfth hole at Lingdale is the shortest par four at Lingdale and often the most rewarding. An uphill golf hole which requires a tee shot of one hundred and seventy yards to clear the brow of the hill. This will then leave an approach shot of about one hundred yards into a double tiered raised green. However, a well struck shot onto the right level will leave players with a great birdie chance and if you do go long a large bank at the back of the green may see your ball returned to the putting green. A great opportunity to make a birdie.

Course Guide Hole 13 – Par 4, 372 yards Before teeing off make sure you take in the surroundings and the views stretching over Charnwood Forest. Once you have done, make sure you are ready to face the challenge of the thirteenth hole. The tee shot is to a fairway which has out of bounds all the way down the left and a ditch on the right-hand side. A well-positioned tee shot will leave a straight forward approach to a large green which has a pond on the left and a bunker on the right but provided you have clubbed right these will not be an issue. A great chance to make a par whilst admiring the beautiful scenery.

www.lingdalegolfclub.co.uk

LINGDGC_CLUB4_sian_8.12.17_52pp.indd 35

Hole 14 – Park 4, 452 yards The fourteenth hole is undoubtedly the toughest par four on the golf course protected both by the length of the hole and also the tightness of the fairway. A Sunday best drive down the fairway will still leave a long approach shot to a large kidney shaped green which is protected by a copse of trees on the right-hand side and run off areas on the left-hand side. If you can somehow hit two great shots you may make a well-deserved par on this difficult golf hole.

Course Guide Hole 15 – Par 5, 547 yards The last of the par fives at Lingdale and the one which is most likely to reward you with a birdie. The left-hand side of the fairway has a ditch running parallel to it all the way down to the green and so the sensible approach from the tee is a shot favouring the right-hand side of the fairway. From here players will have the tough decision of whether to take on the two new fairway bunkers which will leave them an easier approach shot or whether to lay back in order to avoid them. The green is large in size but fairly flat with only a single bunker protecting it. Although offering a good birdie chance it could easily trip you up.

www.lingdalegolfclub.co.uk

LINGDGC_CLUB4_sian_8.12.17_52pp.indd 37

Hole 16 – Par 3, 195 yards The sixteenth hole is a tough par three that takes you into the closing stretch of your round and if you have got a good card in your hard is a real test of your nerve. The green is again a double tiered green with a severe run off area at the back of it which means that a shot finishing short of the hole is never a bad play. The newly renovated bunker on the front left-hand corner of the green catches plenty of balls as the natural lie of the land will take balls that way. The best advice for this hole is to take your par and move quickly on.

Course Guide Hole 17 – Par 4, 340 yards The seventeenth hole at Lingdale is without a doubt the most picturesque as you tee off in shoot within the trees. It certainly backs up Peter Allis who famously quoted Lingdale as a ‘Hidden Gem In The Midlands’. The fairway has a mature oak in the centre of it which provides a great line off the tree provided that you can either fly over or duck under it with your tee shot. Anything left off the tee may be in danger of finding the out of bounds and forcing a reload. If you do manage to find the fairway off the tee you will be faced with a fairly short approach shot to a raised green which again has a false front and is very quick from back to front. This is a great chance to make a birdie or par but beware that it could also ruin your card. www.lingdalegolfclub.co.uk

LINGDGC_CLUB4_sian_8.12.17_52pp.indd 39

Hole 18 – Par 3, 163 yards The finishing hole at Lingdale is a tough par three played over gorse and heathers to a large oval shaped green. The green is flanked by bunkers on both sides and at the back of the green. The safe play here is to aim for the middle of the double tiered green and take your chances with your putter as anything missing the green will leave a very difficult up and down. You will always be happy to put a par on your card on this hole and return to the sanctuary of the clubhouse for some after round refreshments.
