LITTLEHAMPTON GOLF CLUB
OFFICIAL CORPORATE BROCHURE 2024 - 2025
LITTLEHAMPTON GOLF CLUB
Littlehampton Golf Club & Ludis would like to thank all of the businesses that appear in this publication for their support and wish them continued commercial success. The content of this brochure is believed to be correct at the time of printing but we cannot endorse individual statements and readers should not rely solely upon the continued accuracy of any individual claims contained herein without consultation with the service provider. Designed and Printed by Ludis 2024.
Littlehampton Golf Club was founded in 1889, and is the only Links golf course in West Sussex and was recently described in Golf News as ‘Sussex’s Hidden Gem of a Links’.
The 18-hole par 70 course is never the same from one day to the next as the changing wind conditions make each hole set up differently from round to round.
WELCOME
However, one consistent feature is the quality of the course together with the stunning views of the sea and of the historic and beautiful South Downs.
Our aim is that members and visitors enjoy a memorable golf experience and whether you are looking for golf membership, a society golf venue or function hire, Littlehampton Golf Club is the perfect location. We look forward to welcoming you in the near future.
In 2019 the Golf Club was voted as the 12th Best Course in Sussex, something we are very proud of and excited about improving upon in years to come.
At a meeting held at the Terminus Hotel, Littlehampton on 16th February 1889, around 25 members enrolled themselves and the Club was formed.
In the early days the only direct route from Littlehampton Town to the Club Room and first tee was by ferry across the River Arun. This remained the sole access route until Henry, 15th Duke of Norfolk, opened the Swing Bridge on 7th August 1908.
HISTORY
Two local boatmen, ’Jimmy’ and ’Peachey’ had their very own rowing boat ferry that operated from Pier Road to the Golf Club, charging one penny single and tuppence return- somewhat cheaper than the toll over the Swing Bridge.
It must have been arduous rowing the clinker-built boat across England`s second fastest flowing river with fourteen passengers, six aside and two in the bows.
The original course consisted of nine holes but in 1893 it was decided to turn it into 18 holes. It consisted of an enjoyable, but tricky, outward half played amongst the sand hills. The inward half was considerably improved by taking on fresh ground and the existing holes were lengthened and the bunkering tightened up by Messrs Hawtree and JH Taylor Ltd. It was quoted that even though two or three holes near the finish lie in marshland, there is not a weak or commonplace hole in the round.
On the Sussex coast we find many seaside resorts, some large and well known, and some smaller ones like Littlehampton which remain more delightful in their naturalness. Here we find a place of wide-open spaces, woods, river and harbour, and a vast expanse of golden sands.
It was from the top of the steps to the previous Clubhouse that an entrancing panorama of shingle, sand and sea could
be viewed. Nowadays, the old Clubhouse is no more, but views of such can still be seen from many of the tees along the holes which border the sand dunes.
With the outbreak of the Second World War, we became very much an invasion coast and, along with many other courses, Littlehampton bore the scars of war. To get the links back into playing order after the War, over 400 concrete blocks had to be removed, tank and lorry
ruts filled and made smooth, greens re-laid and a military road made into the fairway removed.
The par remains at 70, but if anyone thinks that this course will give you a flattering score, they should consult the honours boards in the Clubhouse. Tragically, these and so much archive material was lost when the previous Clubhouse was destroyed by fire on the fateful day of 18th June 1985.
COURSE TOUR
(HOLE BY HOLE)
HOLE 1
A formidable opening hole which can play deceptively long when played into the wind. Two deep bunkers short of the putting surface demand an accurate approach to a long green, which can prove harder to hit due to the sloping surrounds.
HOLE 2
Hold the fairway and you are left with a direct route to the green. Judging the approach will require good distance control particularly in a crosswind as the hole runs parallel to the shoreline.
An extremely challenging short hole for all standards of play. Greenside bunkers left and right swallow even the slightest miss-hit and a par here is highly regarded.
HOLE 4
The longest hole on the course, the 4th is marshalled by a series of bunkers along the right-hand side. A solid par five off the back tees, it demands an accurate third to a fairly shallow green.
HOLE 5
Turning back southwards, another par five somewhat shorter in length, with a gentle dogleg to the right. Avoid the Rife along the right side of this hole and whilst the bigger hitter can reach in two, a sloping green ensures they still have to work hard for a birdie.

COURSE TOUR
HOLE 6
The second of five par threes at Littlehampton, the sixth requires both accuracy and distance control. Come up short and you will encounter a raised green, go too long and you may be left with a tricky downhill chip or putt. Bunkers on both sides can also snare seemingly good tee shots.
HOLE 7
Avoid the imposing fairway bunker off the tee and you should be left with a straight forward approach to the green. Take a brief moment to enjoy views across Clymping beach, the English Channel and the famous South Downs away in the distance.
HOLE 8
A delightful par three, the longest on the golf course, demanding a crisply struck tee shot. Don’t relax when you do find the
apparent safety of the putting surface, as this is a notoriously tricky green on which to hole a putt.
HOLE 9
With the wind off the beach, avoiding the bunker on the right off the tee is paramount here if you are to have a comfortable shot in to another well-guarded green.
COURSE TOUR
HOLE 10
The tenth hole approaches the furthest point from our Clubhouse with Out of Bounds running along the left-hand side. Find the fairway and avoid the greenside bunker, and this can yield a good birdie opportunity.
HOLE 11
A short par three where, if you miss the target, you will face a testing up and down from the hollows, or from one of three awaiting greenside bunkers.
HOLE 12
Now turn for the long march home, and you are about to be severely tested. A good drive is required to miss the bunker on the right. A long par four for the men, with a rolling green, a par here is very welcome.
HOLE 13
A good drive down the left of fairway leaves the ideal approach route into number thirteen. Though by no means a long hole, many a golfer can succumb to
a well-placed pin position on the top level of another very challenging green.
HOLE 14
Finding the fairway is of enormous benefit here, where you will require a precise second to a long green. The positioning of the bunker in the middle of the fairway can cause many to come up short, and if that does not get you, there are two more well placed bunkers waiting at greenside.
COURSE TOUR
HOLE 15
An excellent opportunity to pick up shots presents itself on this short par four, but so too does the chance to derail a good round. Big hitting can get you very near to the green, but go left off the tee and the bunkers and out of bounds are in play, go too far right and the Rife offers a watery grave.
HOLE 16
Miss the short sixteenth and you are most likely to find one of five bunkers. Worse still, the Rife runs in front of the green and the nearby road and out of bounds on the left can enter your mind as you glimpse the sanctuary of the Clubhouse.
HOLE 17
A real birdie chance for the better player, but into wind this hole can prove a drastically different proposition. Coming in from the left with your second offers
the greater angle as you can play away from the three greenside bunkers.
HOLE 18
A fitting eighteenth hole where anything is possible and the right-hand side fairway bunkers need to be respected. An accurate approach is required to hit the final green, the longest on the golf course. Miss the target and you will need to work hard to get up and down, often watched by the inhabitants of the imposing triple aspect Clubhouse.
