Welcome Spectacularly set on the South Coast of West Sussex, with views of the River Arun estuary, English Channel and South Downs, Littlehampton Golf Links offers a unique golfing experience.
The modern Clubhouse provides for our Club’s welcoming hospitality and with the restaurant’s wide range of menus and relaxing bars and lounges catering for the needs of members and visitors alike.
Being the oldest golf course in West Sussex, founded in 1889, the Littlehampton Links is a 6,226-yard par-70 course that runs along the sand dunes of the beautiful English Nature preserved West Beach. It is a true test of golfing ability without being too severe on the average golfer.
Ladies and Gentlemen’s, Full, Country or Off Peak Membership packages are available. Membership affords not only the opportunity to play competitively or for relaxation on an outstanding course, but opens up a rich and varied social calendar that the Club is able to provide.
With excellent drainage and the superb efforts of our hardworking green-keeping staff, it remains playable and in excellent condition all year round.
Green fee, day ticket and society packages are available offering excellent value for money, while our superb facilities can be hired for private parties and functions. Whichever way you choose to discover Littlehampton Golf Club, a warm welcome is assured.

History Littlehampton Golf Club was formed on February 16, 1889, when around 25 members enrolled after a meeting held at Littlehampton’s Terminus Hotel. Getting to the Club was somewhat more difficult than it is today. The only direct route from Littlehampton town to the Clubroom and first tee was by ferry across the river Arun. This remained the sole access route until Henry, 15th Duke of Norfolk, opened the swing bridge in August 1908. Two enterprising local boatmen - “Jimmy” and “Peachey” - had their very own “rowing boat ferry” that operated from Pier Road to the Golf Club, charging one old penny single and tuppence (two pennies) return - somewhat cheaper than the toll over the swing bridge.
6 | www.littlehamptongolf.co.uk
The original course consisted of nine holes, with the Clubroom being a large hut positioned near the north-eastern part of the fort, next to the tee of today’s second hole. The rifle butt, which was on the seaside of the original 2nd hole, now has to be encountered when driving off at our present 9th hole. During 1893 it was decided to extend the nine-hole course to 18 holes. The inward half was then considerably improved by taking on fresh ground and the existing holes were lengthened and the bunkering tightened up by Messrs Frederick Hawtree and JH Taylor. It was from the top of the steps to the previous Clubhouse that an entrancing panorama of shingle, sand and sea could be viewed. Nowadays, the old Clubhouse is no more, but the delightful views seen from many of the tees along the holes that border the sand dunes still remain.
With the outbreak of the Second World War, we became very much an invasion coast and, along with many other courses, Littlehampton bore the scars of war. To get the links back into playing order, more than 400 concrete blocks had to be removed, tank and lorry ruts filled and made smooth, greens re-laid and a military road running through the fairway removed.
The par remains at 70, but if anyone thinks that this course will give you a flattering score, he should consult the honours boards in the Clubhouse.
It was a costly and time-consuming task, but a worthy one. In his book, “Play the best great courses in the British Isles, published in 1973, Sir Peter Allen described our links as reminiscent of Royal Liverpool Golf Club at Hoylake, a regular venue for The Open Championship.
Undaunted, Littlehampton Golf Club arose like a phoenix from the ashes, proudly retaking its position as a source of comfort and a place of enjoyment to its local golfing community, as it will doubtless continue to do for generations to come.
Tragically, so much archive material was lost when the Clubhouse was destroyed by fire on the fateful day of 18th June 1985.

talent for shaping their shots or with flair and imagination the chance to prosper.
The 18-hole West Beach Links with a par of 70 extends to 6,226 yards off the white tees and offers a fair but testing examination of golfers of all abilities.
With excellent drainage and the tireless efforts of our greenkeeping staff, it remains playable and in excellent condition all year round. The greens run true but are full of subtle borrows that are not easy for the uninitiated to discern.
Well-bunkered and a challenge in its own right, it is an altogether more difficult proposition when the wind blows strongly (a wind being a regular feature of the course) and presents those with a
There are five par 3s on the course, but don’t drop your guard for a moment because the greens are narrow, well-guarded by bunkers and not easy to hit, particularly when the wind is blowing.
8 | www.littlehamptongolf.co.uk
The front nine features three par 3s and two par 5s, including the 552-yard 4th, the longest hole on the course. Holing out on the 11th and having reached the westernmost part of the course brings the turn for the long march home and be on your mettle because you are about to be severely tested. Holes 12 to 14 are a particular daunting stretch, a trio of par 4s which require wellconsidered approach shots to help you score.
With it being a links course, you would expect the bunkers to offer a true test, so heed some well-meaning advice – stay out of the sand or make sure your sand wedge has plenty of loft to negotiate the high lips on some of the greenside bunkers. If you are unfamiliar with our county, we hope that the only mention of the word rife made during the day relates to the abundant number of birdies achieved by your playing group.
www.littlehamptongolf.co.uk | 9
The Course Continued Rife, you see, is also a Sussex name for a drainage ditch serving the arable land on the coastal plain between the rivers Arun and Lavant and one such water feature you would be well advised to avoid meanders its way through our course. The rife affects no less than six holes. If the clubs are not quite behaving in the manner you had hoped, the spectacular unspoilt scenery in this part of the world can certainly soothe the soul and offers more than adequate compensation.
Take a brief moment to enjoy views across the river Arun, Clymping beach, Littlehampton harbour skyline and the famous South Downs away in the distance. On a clear day the Isle of Wight Can be also seen. After you have completed your round you may wish to consider how well our Wayne Hawes (amateur) or Jamie Harris (professional) must have played to set the respective course records, both of which are 61.

Tour the Course If you have never played Littlehampton before you are in for a treat. Make the most of your trip by learning about some of the pitfalls that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you follow our course tour courtesy of Stuart Fallow, our PGA professional.
Hole 3, 177 yards, par 3 An extremely challenging short hole for all standards of play. Greenside bunkers left and right swallow even the slightest mis-hit and a par here is highly regarded.
Hole 1, 420 yards, par 4 A formidable opening hole which can play deceptively long when played into the wind. Two deep bunkers short of the putting surface demand an accurate approach to a long green, which can prove harder to hit due to the sloping surrounds.
Hole 4, 522 yards, par 5 The longest hole on the course, the 4th is marshalled by a series of bunkers along the right-hand side. A solid par five off the back tees, it demands an accurate third to a fairly shallow green. 2nd Green
Hole 2, 366 yards, par 4 Hold the fairway and you are left with a direct route to the green. Judging the approach will require good distance control particularly in a crosswind as the hole runs parallel to the shoreline.
12 | www.littlehamptongolf.co.uk
Hole 5, 493 yards, par 5 Turning back southwards, another par five somewhat shorter in length, with a gentle dog-leg to the right. Whilst the bigger hitters can reach in two, a sloping green ensures they still have to work hard for a birdie.
Hole 6, 183 yards, par 3 The second of five par-3s at Littlehampton, the sixth requires both accuracy and distance control. Come up short and you will encounter a raised green, go too long and you may be left with a tricky downhill chip or putt. Bunkers on both sides can also snare seemingly good tee shots. Hole 7, 381 yards, par 4 Avoid the imposing fairway bunker off the tee and you should be left with a straight forward approach to the green. Take a brief moment to enjoy views across Clymping beach, the harbour skyline and the famous South Downs away in the distance.
Hole 8, 188 yards, par 3 A delightful par three, the longest on the golf course, demanding a crisply struck tee shot. Don’t relax when you do find the apparent safety of the putting surface, as this is a notoriously tricky green on which to hole a putt. Hole 9, 371 yards, par 4 With the wind off the beach, avoiding the bunker on the right off the tee is paramount here if you are to have a comfortable shot in to another well-guarded green.
www.littlehamptongolf.co.uk | 13
Tour the Course Continued Hole 10, 365 yards, par 4 The tenth hole approaches the furthest point from our Clubhouse with Out of Bounds running along the left-hand side. Find the fairway and avoid the greenside bunker, and this can yield a good birdie opportunity.
Hole 13, 374 yards, par 4 A good drive down the left of fairway leaves the ideal approach route into the green. Though by no means a long hole, many a golfer can succumb to a well-placed pin position on the top level of another very challenging green.
Hole 11, 154 yards, par 3 A short par three where, if you miss the target, you will face a testing up and down from the hollows, or from one of three awaiting greenside bunkers.
Hole 14, 390 yards, par 4 Finding the fairway is of enormous benefit here, where you will require a precise second to a long green. The positioning of the bunker in the middle of the fairway can cause many to come up short, and if that does not get you, there are two more well placed waiting at greenside.
Hole 12, 410 yards, par 4 Now turn for the long march home, and you are about to be severely tested. A good drive is required to miss the bunker on the right. A long par four for the men, with a rolling green, a par here is very welcome.
14 | www.littlehamptongolf.co.uk
Hole 15, 341 yards, par 4 An excellent opportunity to pick up shots presents itself on this short par four, but so too does the chance to derail a good round. Big hitting can get you very near to the green, but go left off the tee and the bunker and bushes are in play, go too far right and the Rife offers a watery grave. Hole 16, 152 yards, par 3 Miss the short sixteenth and you are most likely to find one of five bunkers. Worse still, the nearby road and Out of Bounds on the left can enter your mind as you glimpse the sanctuary of the Clubhouse.
Hole 17, 505 yards, par 5 A real birdie chance for the better player, but into wind this hole can prove a drastically different proposition. Coming in from the left with your second offers the better angle as you can play away from the three greenside bunkers. Hole 18, 404 yards, par 4 A fitting finishing hole where anything is possible and the right-hand side fairway bunkers need to be respected. An accurate approach is required to hit the final green, the longest on the golf course. Miss the target and you will need to work hard to get up and down, often watched by the inhabitants of the imposing triple aspect Clubhouse.

Practice Facilities We have a spacious practice area in the middle of the course where you will find diligent members honing their skills. It is around 250 yards in length and allows the keen golfer to work on any area of their game from wedges right up to driver. While we have no range balls as such, members bring their own before making their way back down the eighteenth fairway, either to the 1st tee to start their round or to the Clubhouse. It is possible for an adult golfer to regard sand as enthusiastically as a carefree child – all it takes is a little time and application.
We have a practice bunker available to perfect your technique and make sure you escape from the sand every time and increase your ratio of sand saves. For those wishing to improve their putting, there is an excellent practice putting green just outside the Clubhouse, which mirrors the surfaces you will find out on the course. This is also the place to work on those chip-and-runs, one of the key stroke saving shots in links golf. If you do not have the time to go down to the practice area before your round, there is a driving net next to the first tee which is ideal for getting into the groove before you tee off.
www.littlehamptongolf.co.uk | 29
Visitors and Societies We very much welcome visitors and weekday society golfers to Littlehampton to experience the warm, friendly atmosphere and the challenges of playing a fine links golf course. Individual society packages can be tailored to suit your requirements. We have much to offer with spacious changing rooms, a choice of both formal and informal lounges, bars and catering facilities to ensure your day is both memorable and enjoyable.
A wide range of food is available to suit your own requirements and copies of our menus are available on request. Visitors may use the spike bar, while smart casual attire may be worn in the main bar and must be worn in the dining room. As other golf clubs, we have a dress code and this will be provided to Society visitors.
The minimum number for a society booking is just 12 people and the format of play is up to you, be it two, three or fourballs, although we do not permit Texas Scrambles owing to the concentrated wear they cause to the course.

Social Being able to play on one of Sussex’s premier golf courses whenever you choose should be temptation enough in itself to become a member of Littlehampton Golf Club. But on top of testing your golfing skills in such an unspoilt and picturesque setting, there are numerous other ways to enjoy what we have to offer. There is a very active social side to the Club and special events take place throughout the year.
Our members do like a party or a get-together and as well more conventional offerings such as the ever-popular quiz night, there are surprises in store as well. Events in the diary have ranged from a murder/mystery night (it was Professor Plum in the spike bar with a long-handled putter) to a Sixties night fancy dress and from a jazz night featuring live music to a carols evening. New Year’s Eve wouldn’t be New Year’s Eve without a party, and where better to celebrate seeing out the old and welcoming in the new than alongside friends at Littlehampton Golf Club.
