History
L
utterworth has played its part in England’s chequered religious history; John Wycliffe was the Rector of Lutterworth when he made the first translation of the bible into English. This was strongly opposed by the Church at the time and after his death local Monks dug up his remains and threw them into the River Swift, which today flows through the course. The Club dates back to 1904 where records show that the original leasing agreement between the Club and the local landowner was signed on 5th May 1904.
The original membership of 59 included 22 ladies and the course comprised 9 holes played over 25 acres. Records from the time show that the landowner sought a fee of £25 per annum rent. The Committee were anxious to reduce this as the total income of the Club was only £45. The Club almost folded in 1910 when it had a deficit of more than £3, so the members voted to add a levy of 2 shillings per member to pay off the deficit. In 1914, terms were agreed with the landowner to lease a new site comprising 42 acres (which still forms part of the
8 | www.lutterworthgc.co.uk
current course) at a cost of £25 per annum. A new 9 hole course was completed in early 1916 at a cost of £60. Only in 1922 did the course open all year round. Until then, members only played during the winter months when the grass did not need cutting!! A clubhouse was added at a cost of £95. During the 1930s a wealthy American couple had been playing some of the best courses in Scotland and England and, on their way back to Southampton, decided by chance to stay a night at a local hotel. They were invited to play Lutterworth Golf
Club and later donated the Godde Trophy to the Club in recognition of their most enjoyable two days of their holiday. This trophy is still competed for today. The course continued to be developed within its original footprint with members helping out by cutting the fairways. This caused difficulties for anyone who did not drive straight and, twice a year, two local farmers would come and cut the rough grass, baling it and taking it away for animal feed. In early 1960, the Club purchased the previously leased land for a sum of ÂŁ6,500, partly funded by selling a farmhouse included in the purchase.
By 1969 the Club owned 74 acres but the course remained a 9 hole layout until 1979 when an additional 6 holes were added. This presented its own challenge as certain competitions had to be played over 18 holes. To get round this, competitors played the current 11th, 12th and 18th holes first before carrying on from the now 1st as their 4th hole. This continued until 1987 when the final 3 holes were added. For a number of years, plans for a by-pass had been under discussion. This would take part of the land owned by the Club and negotiations took place to allow us to retain an 18 hole layout. Adjacent land

was purchased and work started in 1992 to make four new holes with the last new hole ready for play in early 1997. A new Clubhouse was also constructed at this time and this was opened at the end of 1996, followed by a new professional shop and Academy area. This broadly comprises the layout and facilities still in use today.

Course Tour
Hole 1 - 324 Yards Par 4 An inviting short Par 4 as opener, running downhill to a small flat area before rising to the blind green with bunkers to left and right. Position is far more important than distance here. Pro Tip: Aim to put your tee shot on the wider, flat area of the fairway at the bottom of the hill leaving a simpler approach. Add one club for the slope on your approach, but anything long leaves a very difficult chip back.
Hole 2 - 333 Yards Par 4 Keeping the gentle start going, the wide fairway looks easy to hit from the elevated tee, but position is again critical. A copse of very tall Scots pine blocks the approach from the left and a ditch protects the approach on the right, while the green itself is protected on three sides by bunkers. The River Swift provides an interesting backdrop to the hole. Pro Tip: No pressure on distance with this downhill tee shot and fast fairway. Try to find the right side of the fairway to leave a better angle to the green. Take a look at the pin position on the 11th as you pass the 11th green.
14 | www.lutterworthgc.co.uk
Hole 3 - 404 Yards Par 4 Regardless of tee, this is a difficult left to right driving hole made more so for those playing from the white tee by the fact that it lies behind the River Swift. One of the few holes on the course with the county’s trademark ridge and furrow, the fairway is undulating. A significant fairway bunker catches any misdirected drives and a large cherry tree on the right can interfere with the shot in to a large, elevated green with narrow opening and deep left-hand bunker. Pro Tip: One of the toughest tee shots on the course. Sacrifice distance to try and find
the fairway through the avenue of trees. An approach up the right side of the green will give you a better angle, avoiding the deep bunker on the front left of the green. Hole 4 - 176 Yards Par 3 The River Swift dominates your view of the first par 3, passing in front of the tees and down the left hand side of the hole. A left greenside bunker may prevent errant tee shots from landing in the river but with a narrow green, this is no easy sand play. The safe tee shot is to the right where there is plenty of room. A chip or pitch over the grassy mounds is not always an easy task though.
Pro Tip: A lovely par 3. Aim for the larger front half of this pear-shaped green. Hole 5 - 385 Yards Par 4 The white and yellow tees stand behind a small lake while the red tee is alongside the water. The tree-lined hole swings left to right with a gap between offering the chance to hit a widening fairway. Tee shots hit too far right will be stymied by a large tree covered mound. Bunkers protect both sides of the green which, with its significant slope, calls for careful judgement on where to land the approach shot.
www.lutterworthgc.co.uk | 15
Pro Tip: A challenging Par 4, demanding accuracy and length off the tee. Don’t go long with your approach. You have been warned! Hole 6 - 485 Yards Par 5 The direct line to the green on this Par 5 is blocked by a number of tall trees on the left, so tee shots have to be threaded towards a relatively narrow gap between them and a fairway bunker, and a copse on the right of the fairway. The large two-tiered green is protected by a bunker to the left while the back tier has two distinct levels with the left side higher than the right.

Pro Tip: Reachable for most with three nice shots, steady play is the key to this hole. An undulating green will test your putting skills. Hole 7 - 399 Yards Par 4 This is a simple looking hole from the tee with the major threat being the outof-bounds within ten yards of the left hand side of the fairway. Left and right greenside bunkers seem to shrink the gap through which to access the large, two-tier green which is deceptively long from back to front. Approach shots hit long to this green will present a very difficult recovery shot over a bank where
the green will be sloping significantly away from you. Pro Tip: Aim to draw the ball off the trees on the right of this Par 4. Another undulating green awaits. With steep slopes from back to front, try to leave an uphill putt. Hole 8 - 451 Yards Par 4 From the white/yellow tees this presents a tough Par 4 challenge. From the red tee it offers up a more straightforward Par 5. The hole doglegs right to left past a small pond on the left, around a line of tall trees and down a slope to the lower level fairway approaching

the green. The large sloping green is protected by bunkers to the left and right. Surrounded by banking, any shots going long will leave a difficult chip or pitch back. Pro Tip: At stroke index 1 for the white/yellow tees, this hole demands a strong tee shot and accurate approach to a narrow green. If your handicap allows it, plays this hole as a Par 5 (white/yellow tees) or 6 (red tee). Hole 9 - 162 Yards Par 3 This conifer-lined Par 3 looks deceptively simple. The main challenge is the green which slopes sharply from back to front.
Balls settling beyond the hole leave nerveshredding chips or putts that need luck as well as skill to stop close to the hole. Those aiming to play short must watch out for the front bunker.
guarded by bunkers left and right and a dip before the green adds to the pressure on accuracy and distance control.
Pro Tip: Our shortest Par 3 but don’t be long! Your target off the tee is to leave your ball below the hole.
Pro Tip: A great Par 4. With the River Swift running across the fairway, aim towards the bridge on the right off the tee and risk getting as close as you can, to leave a shorter approach to this narrow, sloping green.
Hole 10 - 400 Yards Par 4 Driving to an accessible fairway, the aim is to achieve perfect position just short of the River Swift which crosses this hole. The approach to the slightly elevated green is
Hole 11 - 375 Yards Par 4 An inviting tee shot to one of our widest fairways but beware of running long in to the ditch that crosses it. Second shots contend with a narrower, undulating

fairway with a lateral penalty area to the right of the hole and trees to the left. This green has only one bunker as protection but presents a challenge with some severe slopes on the front and left. Pro Tip: A challenging Par 4. Find the generous fairway off the tee. The fairway on your approach slopes to the right where all the trouble is, so aim to the left side of the hole with your shot to the green. Hole 12 - 185 Yards Par 3 A Par 3 with lots of interest. Narrow, tree-lined and distinctly uphill, the green is semi-sunken

into the top of the hill. Errant shots left or right are likely to land in deep bunkers while skill and some luck will be required to use the back of the green to stop and return any shots hit long. Those that miss and overshoot completely will leave a tricky shot back. Pro Tip: Tricky Par 3. Add one club for the slope. However, going long leaves a very difficult shot! Hole 13 - 489 Yards Par 4 This hole swings left to right with an internal out of bounds all the way down the right hand side. Play too far left however and
you will go through the trees bordering the left side. Placement of the second shot is key on this hole to give you the best line in, avoiding three fairway bunkers on the left side approach and the greenside bunker on the right. The green itself is slightly domed and few putts are straight. Pro Tip: Steady play on this dogleg right Par 5. Very tight as you get within 75 yards of the green. Aim to be around that distance for your approach to the green. Hole 14 - 454 Yards Par 4 This is a slight dogleg from right to left.
20 | www.lutterworthgc.co.uk
From the white tee the gap to the fairway looks extremely narrow and the line of trees on the right adds extra difficulty. For the second shot, trees border the fairway narrowing it considerably until about 70 yards from the green. The green is long, relatively narrow and slopes gently with severe slopes falling away from the back half of the green. One right hand bunker adds further protection. Pro Tip: A very demanding Par 4 similar to the 8th hole. Aim at the fairway bunker off the tee and find the fairway. Leaves a difficult, long
approach. If your handicap allows it, play as a Par 5 and take 3 steady shots to the green. Hole 15 - 199 Yards Par 3 From the white/yellow tees, our longest Par 3 and from the red, the shortest. A long way downhill from every tee, the approach to the left hand side of the green is protected by a large oak tree. Shots falling short of the green on the right could well end up in the pond while a deep bunker catches shots drifting right. Balls under-hit will roll back off the steep bank that lies immediately before the green while hitting long will leave a tricky chip back to the green that slopes back to front.
Pro tip: A lovely Par 3. Aim at the right side of the green to avoid the large tree. One club less for the steep slope. Hole 16 - 337 Yards Par 4 Played from the elevated white and yellow tees, this hole presents a significant challenge, doglegging right to left through a narrow gap or, more aggressively, over the tree-lined corner which is out of bounds. Two fairway bunkers protecting the far side of the dogleg add to the difficulty. The approach to the green is relatively simple although it is protected by bunkers to left and right. Played from

the red tee, this is a simpler hole but accuracy from the tee still matters. Pro Tip: All about position off the tee. Aim at the large fairway bunker to leave a relatively straightforward approach to the green. Hole 17 - 335 Yards Par 4 Narrow and tree-lined for almost its entire length, the challenge of this hole is further enhanced by the left to right sloping fairway which can sometimes throw balls into the bunkers on the right which are part of the previous hole. The hole swings to the left on approach where bunkers on both sides

Pro Tip: Short Par 4 but the hardest tee shot on the course. Left is not good here! A draw off the trees on the right is ideal to leave a short approach to the green.
The uphill approach shot is guarded by small trees at 70 yards or so out on the left, while the bottom of the flag is often obscured by the banks of the bunkers protecting the left hand side of the green. The green has humps, hollows and slopes that will test what is left of your nerve and reserves.
Hole 18 - 350 Yards Par 4 Elevated tees looking towards the clubhouse and a relatively wide fairway invite a good hit on this last hole. Keep it straight and you will avoid the copse of trees or out of bounds down the right and the two large fairway bunkers on the left.
Pro Tip: Beautiful last hole. Premium on finding the fairway and then aim your approach to the right side of the clock on the clubhouse to avoid the bunkers on the left. A tough green, get your 2 putt and enjoy the 19th hole!
