Welcome In the 19th Century, Edinburgh gave itself the title of “Athens of the North to express its growing importance and architecture. However as the City grew, so too did the number of its Golf Courses, which at that time were all situated some distance from the City Centre. Today these courses are surrounded by developments and lie within the City boundaries, only a short drive from the City Centre. The Merchants of Edinburgh is one such course situated in the Morningside area of the city. May we extend to all members

and visitors a very warm welcome and we hope you enjoy your experience at the Merchants of Edinburgh Golf Club. The course which opened in 1907 was originally designed by Ben Sayers and remodelled in 1936 by the renowned James Braid. Although not long by modern day standards, it is, nevertheless, a true test of golfing ability requiring great precision with greens that are the envy of many other clubs. Our Clubhouse of which we are very proud, was rebuilt in 2001 and retains

much of its original character and ambience. It provides first class facilities and a warm welcome to members and visitors alike. Its unique setting allows members and guests to enjoy refreshments whilst soaking up the stunning views towards The Pentland Hills.

5

History On the 6th of November 1907, in a “smoke hazed room” in Morningside, a meeting of local worthies took place. The group included Accountants, Lawyers, Journalists, a Photographer, a Drapery Store Manager, a Master Butcher and Baker. The meeting was presided over by Mr William Lindsay FRSGS who declared “Gentlemen at last The Merchants of Edinburgh Golf Club exists!” Within a year, under the determined Captaincy of

6

the aforementioned Mr Lindsay, the Club membership had totalled 335 who at the first Annual General Meeting eagerly paid the princely sum of 3 Guineas (about £300 in today’s money). The original course lay out required rather an ingenious use of 68 acres to accommodate 18 holes. In 1934 a further 5 acres of ground were leased to the south of the 4th hole. James Braid was engaged to redesign 4 holes for the sum of £5 –

money well spent as the new design meant it was no longer necessary for members to climb Wester Craiglockhart Hill twice. The Club is unique and extremely proud of having 2 holders of The Victoria Cross among its past and present membership. During the First World War in October 1918 Lieutenant David S. McGregor, 6th Battalion Royal Scots was posthumously awarded his V.C.

In the Second World War Flight Lieutenant John A. Cruikshank, 210 Squadron Royal Air Force, whilst piloting a badly damaged Catalina Flying Boat sank a German U Boat despite suffering appalling wounds and was honoured with a V.C. He remains the last surviving holder of a Victoria Cross from World War II. Walking from the 7th Green you pass what was Craiglockhart Hospital during

the First World War. It was here in 1917 whilst recovering from shell shock that Siegfried Sassoon, the famous writer and poet, met fellow poet Wilfred Owen and they spent time walking the course which assisted their recuperation. Over time they would become firm friends and on their recovery both returned to France where sadly Owen was killed in 1918. Sassoon despite being badly wounded, survived the war and died in 1967.

About the Course With our unique course layout, it’s possible to play just 3, 6, 9,or a full 18 holes. The only deciding factor is how much time you have. Whether you want to play for 30 minutes, an hour or a little longer Merchants of Edinburgh Golf Club

can accommodate you. As well as being an interesting course, as you walk round on a clear day from Easter Craiglockhart Hill it is possible to see eastwards to The City of Edinburgh, further to the Bass Rock and west to Ben Lomond, a distance

of almost 100 miles. Here is an insight into how the course can be played and enjoyed whilst taking in the stunning views afforded by our elevated position.

9

Hole by Hole Hole 1

Hole 2

Hole 3

A good test to start your round. The small green is reachable with a good straight drive but a more common option is to play short and right. A chip and a putt is then required. Pars on this hole are to be celebrated.

A short par 4 across the valley to a double green shared with the 8th. Some might find this green easier to hit than the 1st but shorter hitters may have difficult 2nd shots from awkward stances if short left or right. Take a lofted club and be bold.

The tee shot is uphill to a green set between trees on the left and bushes to the right. Take enough club as this hole generally plays into the prevailing wind and is uphill. A near miss right can find its way to the green.

Beeches-Par 3 – 238 yards

10

Doon n’ up- Par 4-248 yards

Steils Quarry-Par 3-182 yards

Hole 4

Hole 5

Hole 6

An awkward driving hole. The ideal line is down to the right, but the safer option is to stay left and accept a more difficult angle to the green. An approach played slightly left will bounce onto the green but to miss right will lead to a difficult up and down. Walk off with a par here and you’ve done well.

A short downhill par 4 which plays shorter than you think. An opportunity for a birdie if you can find the putting surface with a well struck drive.

A medium length uphill par 4 which plays longer due to elevation and the usual prevailing wind. A good tee shot is required but take enough club for a deceptively long second shot. Ground conditions will dictate the amount of run needed to reach the green, which is fully 50 yards from the marker.

Westercraig- Par 4-390 yards

Braids- Par 4- 270 yards

Firhill- Par-4-393 yards

11

Hole by Hole continued Hole 7

Hole 8

Hole 9

This hole is a gentle but potentially hazardous challenge. The green sits at the base of Wester Craiglockhart Hill and is guarded to the front and left with steep slopes which punish poorly struck tee shots. A slightly aggressive approach will grab and spin back down the green, but too much club can get you tangled in the gorse behind the green. A favourite hole for a birdie.

The 8th is a slight dogleg right. The generous fairway requires a good drive to leave a tricky uphill approach to the double green. Avoid the road on the right and the ball should run down onto the green or a high lofted shot landing softly – what a choice?

A medium length dogleg with a narrow fairway and the left side guarded by mature trees. The slope on the right allows the ball to run onto the fairway. Avoid being left of the fairway at all costs and if you can’t see round the corner lay up to the right. Two bunkers guard the entrance to the green.

Napier- Par 3- 116 yards

12

Hawthorn-Par 4-401 yards

Pumphouse- Par4- 412yards

Hole 10

Hewitt’s Hike- Par 4- 281 yards

The longest Par 4 in the world! Even with the help of an occasional easterly wind, the hole plays nearer 340 yards. Avoid the fairway bunker at 185 yards and do not be short with approach but as the green slopes severely from back to front don’t leave a long downhill putt either.

Hole 11

Pan-Par 3-172 yards The green is set in a bowl with a severe run off left and generally plays into the prevailing wind. Favour the right side of the marker from the tee and give yourself plenty of room as even a poorly struck shot can find the green if it reaches the top of the hill.

Hole 12

Easter Craig-Par 3-159 yards

An uphill Par 3 which requires a tee shot slightly left of the marker with enough club to pitch on the green. Shorter hitters may err short and right as the ball will run forward. An exposed green can be lightning quick in dry conditions.

13

Hole by Hole Hole 13

Hole 14

Hole 15

The signature hole and a dramatic Par 3 with a huge change in elevation. Wind generally blows right to left exaggerating any slightly mishit shots as the ball is in the air for such a long time. Commit fully to the shot and hope your club choice is correct.

A short dogleg Par 4 which is best played right from the tee, short of the bushes and rough leaving an uphill pitch to a semi blind green. Don’t let the bunker short and right come into play, either fly it or play left where a chip and putt will see you home.

A shortish downhill Par 4 with the most heavily bunkered green on the course. A drive middle or left a shade and avoiding the trees on the right will set up a birdie chance. Low handicappers treat this as a tough Par 3 and are disappointed with a 4.

Tap o’the World-Par 3-210 yards

14

continued

Beer Knowe- Par 4-315 yards

Kestrel View-Par 4-315 yards

Hole 16

Hole 17

Hole 18

The shared fairway is a wide target but favour the right side away from the trouble on the left. The approach from the right needs to be long enough or the steep slope will throw shots away from the green into the rough.

A blind Par 3 which if you’re going for it, requires a tee shot aimed at the bushy tree behind the green, so take enough club. To play short and left can see the ball filter onto the green but too much pace will see it fall off the right side. Decide on your strategy and don’t waiver.

The final hole is a short Par 4 with a wickedly sloping fairway. To hold the fairway or make the green, a tee shot must be aimed perilously close to the clubhouse and out of bounds on the left. Anything short kicks away right into the rough. A good chance to end the round with a birdie but beware a usually very quick green.

Sunnyside-Par 4-369yards

Deil’s Run-Par 3-157 yards

Millennium House-Par4-274 yards

Becoming a Member Many Golf clubs these days try to attract new members with enticing membership offers but at Merchants of Edinburgh we like to offer a much more inclusive membership experience in which members are encouraged to play a full and active part in the Club not just as golfers on the course.

As a result our subscriptions are competitively priced and there are no expensive joining fees. Whether you are an experienced golfer, Junior, Youth or just taking up the game, there is a membership to suit you. The course is open all year round, being unplayable only in heavy snow and rarely

has the need for the dreaded “temporary greens or mats for winter tees. We want our members to enjoy both their golf, the club and be greeted by a friendly smile from our helpful team. We offer a warm welcome and excellent value for money.

The Social Side Unlike a lot of Clubs we have a vibrant Social programme which runs throughout the year. The year kicks off in late January with a Traditional Burns Supper which is a delight for both Burns’ enthusiasts and the uninitiated. Throughout the Summer months we have a monthly “Nine Wine and Dine “. This involves nine holes of golf followed by a

fabulous fine dining menu provided by our resident catering team. Diners are always most welcome and many join us just for the Wine & Dine part of the evening. Autumn brings another Cabaret night which is always very popular and well attended. The monthly Quiz Nights return and December sees a full month of events. The Children’s Christmas Party is always a big hit with parents and grandparents. The arrival of Father Christmas is eagerly anticipated by the children.

The Social year draws to a close with the Christmas Draw Night where there are some spectacular prizes up for grabs in the Prize Draw and a Brass Band provides entertainment along with the accompaniment for carol singing The Hogmanay Dinner Dance brings down the curtain on the year when we see in the New Year in traditional style.
