Welcome Set in the village of Newton near Sudbury, at Newton Green Golf Club you are always made to feel welcome, whether you’re looking for an enjoyable round of golf, searching for the ideal course for a society or looking for the right club to join. Founded in 1907, Newton Green was designed by five times Open champion

James Braid. It began as a nine-hole course which was gorse lined and was highly respected as a challenge. In 1994, Newton Green extended into an 18 hole course, being more contemporary to combine a true test of ancient and modern golf. The new holes sculptured then are acknowledged as some of East Anglia’s best of the modern era. As well as offering an enjoyable and challenging course, Newton Green Golf Club also has a history of hosting golf societies, private functions, lunches and other events.

The Pro Shop stocks a wide range of equipment and attire, and also has trollies and buggies available for hire. The clubhouse has facilities including a bar, a dining room and lounge area which can be used for private functions and social events. The club has competitive green fee rates and welcomes enquiries about membership. At Newton Green Golf Club, we aim to ensure all golfers and visitors enjoy our course, comfortable facilities and levels of service to enhance our reputation as a welcoming and progressive members club.

The club’s records start with the minutes of the first AGM which was held in April 1908. Contemporary press reports however, show that the club was formed at a meeting held in May 1907 at the Rose and Crown Hotel in Sudbury. Three gentlemen who had stopped at the Saracen’s Head for refreshment had taken a stroll on the village green adjoining the hostelry and were heard to say, “Wouldn’t this make a lovely course?” None of the residents at the time knew what they were talking about.

Our History

A public meeting was held in Newton in December 1906 to ask the parishioners whether they would allow the green to be used as a golf course. Encouraged by the Lord of the Manor, Earl Howe, the villagers gave their approval. The course was duly laid out on a green which would have looked a lot different back in the day with gorse everywhere and the rough ground being grazed by cattle, sheep and goats, with geese and chickens wandering freely.

The good relationship between the golf club and the village always has been, and still is, of the upmost importance. Each party is dependent on each other as for without the green there would be no golf, and without the maintenance provided by the golf club the 40 acres of green would quickly become overgrown. The golf club has lived in harmony with the village and has provided a rare opportunity for the residents of the village to play golf on the old side entirely free of charge. This has given many opportunities for people to learn and play the game which may have

never been available to them otherwise. The annual match between the club and the village, which began in 1920, still continues today and is fiercely contested each year. For many years the club’s base was a room at the Saracen’s Head Inn, which also provided the facilities for refreshments and meals. The professional was also provided with a hut that was situated opposite the pub and this arrangement continued for many years.

Our History continued

When the golf club’s membership began expanding it became apparent that these facilities were going to become inadequate and that the club would need to look at providing its own facilities. The first attempt at this was back in 1945 when the club considered buying a substantial property called “The Deans, but eventually this was turned down.

8

Eventually, not until the late 1970s, the club managed to purchase a site behind the 2nd tee (which is now the 1st) that became available and were able to build its own facilities. Also during this time, the grant of a licence of the green to the club was formalised by the newly formed Newton Green Trust due to the Common Lands Registration Act coming in. In 1981, the changing rooms and professional shop were completed at the new

site, and a couple of years later the club managed to raise enough funds to add a lounge and bar, with the kitchen and dining room being completed just after.

With the increase of popularity of golf in the 1980s membership continued to grow. The need to expand from a ninehole course to an 18-hole course became apparent. A long lease became available with farmland adjoining the green which was too good an opportunity to miss.

Despite the fact that development of this land would place a substantial financial burden on the members, the project went ahead with great enthusiasm and the club celebrated probably its greatest moment with the opening of the new holes in September 1994. The need to extend the current clubhouse quickly again was apparent but would not be financially possible to undertake in one go. Plans were drawn up to carry the work out in stages. Both the ladies and gents changing rooms were extended and

facilities for disabled were also provided. The main entrance, bar was improved and a new secretary’s office was constructed.

continue to look to make improvements to its course, like the newly designed 1st hole in 2016, and premises in the years to come.

The club celebrated its centenary in 2007, with a jump back in time match with hickory shafts and plus 4s. This also showed what a massive step that golf and the club had taken over these last 100 years. Newton Green Golf Club has achieved much over the duration of 111 years and will

About The Course Designed by James Braid, the course measures 5,961 yards long and a par 69 for gents, and 5,413 yards long and a par 71 for ladies

With small greens to attack on the old side to long, testing holes that are tree lined on the new side, this is a course that will challenge all areas of your game. The course is maintained all year round, with rarely the need for temporary tees and greens. Without bunkers on the old side of the course, its defences are ditches, gorse and small greens making accuracy a must on this part of the course. On the new side the greens are larger but so too are the holes themselves. Overall it is a course that will test your skills and your handicap. The signature hole of

the course is the 12th. The hole itself has wonderful picturesque views from both the tee and the fairway but is challenging with a drive that has a narrow landing point, out of bounds on the right and the hole is protected by two ditches with your approach. Very easy to score a high number on this hole! Newton Green is a challenge to single figure handicaps due to its risk/reward shots, and is a fair test for the higher handicap player with holes forgiving enough to allow even a poor round to be enjoyable.

11

The Starter’s Shelter A significant feature of the first tee at historic Newton Green is a starter’s shelter commemorating the club’s long-serving professional, the late Arthur Davey. 12

The shelter was paid for by subscriptions and grants, and officially opened by President Michael Oliver in August 2014. Having completed 60 years at Newton Green Golf Club, Arthur Davey is believed to have been the world’s longest serving golf professional. The shelter is designed to resemble the little shed from which he operated. The hut was situated off the course across the main Sudbury-Colchester road – in leisurely days of considerably less traffic. However, it was well placed to serve the first tee which is now the 18th tee.

Arthur lived only a couple of hundred yards from his workplace, from where he organised his day mowing greens and fairways, taking green fees, teaching and making clubs.

Born to a Bungay golfing family in 1895, he was known for his self-effacing benevolence and diffident charm. His elder brother William had been appointed professional at Newton’s then nine-hole course in 1910. But, after joining

Our History

the armed forces for the 1914-18 World

War, William was killed in action in France during September 1915. Arthur also served in the war, but survived and, in 1919 at the age of 24, was appointed professional at Newton Green. He had previously started as assistant to E A Larke at Bungay at the age 14.

With rudimentary equipment, he set about getting the course into shape following wartime neglect. In his early days fairways were kept in trim by sheep, goats and geese. Arthur settled in the village and, in 1924, married a local girl. In 1927 the club acquired its first horse drawn mower. Arthur temporarily suspended his professional duties during the 1939-45 World War, and worked as a grounds man under the supervision of the committee. He resumed full duties in 1945, but it was not until 1948 the club purchased its first tractor,

when Arthur was earning £5 per week. In the early 1970s the club sanctioned the appointment of an assistant professional, but Arthur continued at the helm until 1979. His retirement was marked by being made an Honorary Associate Member of the Professional Golfers’ Association. Arthur’s original hut was last used in 1981 - a year in which he was guest of honour at the opening of the present professional’s shop. He died in May 1992 at the age of 97. In 2009, the club launched its first pay and play membership - naming it after Arthur Davey.

Hole by Hole If you have never played at Newton Green Golf Club before, you’re in for a fun and interesting round.

14

HOLE 1 Corner, PAR 4/5 A tough opening hole, with Out of Bounds down the right-hand side. This makes a drive down the left side of the fairway a must. Play this is as a par 5, laying up with the second shot just short of the ditch, leaving a short approach in.

HOLE 3 Lays Corner, PAR4 A dogleg from right to left with a large fairway bunker tight to the left side makes aiming at the marker post a must. This will leave around 150 yards to the green with bunkers guarding both sides and a heavily sloped green so short is advisable.

HOLE 2 Little Newton, PAR 3 A lengthy Par 3 which requires a solid tee shot to find the middle of this well guarded green with front and side greenside bunkers. Long of the green will find deep rough and trees, so short is the play.

HOLE 4 Roman Way, PAR 5 A long par 5 off the competition tees. Fairway bunkers along the right are strategically placed so left side offairway is the target. A solid second shot will allow a mid to short approach. Beware of the gorse and trees

Our History

HOLE 5 Valley View, PAR 4 A picturesque par 4 lined with pine treesand double fairway bunkers placed in the middle of the fairway. Laying up is advisable but big hitters could go for the green to leave a small pitch in.

HOLE 7 Tapps, PAR 5 A shorter par 5 than the 4th but still substantial length, a good drive is a must to clear a well-placed fairway bunker on the right side, a well-guarded green with fairway and greenside bunkers. For the longer hitter there is an opportunity to hit this green in two.

HOLE 6 Oliver’s, PAR 3 A tricky par 3 requiring a mid to long iron, Greenside bunkers placed at the front and sides. Long of the green will find thick rough and trees so centre of green is best chance of a par.

HOLE 8 The Oaks, PAR 4 The only hole with deep water on the course. This is a layup hole for most so a driver isn’t always required off the tee to stay clear of the fairway bunkers. Laying

around the 150 area just off the fairway.

up short of the pond with the second shot is advisable to leave around 100 yards to this green, with greenside bunkers on both sides.

HOLE 9 Wheelwrights, PAR 4 Another layup hole with double fairway bunkers positioned in the middle so no more than 200 yards off the tee is required to keep short. Longer hitters can have a go at driving this enticing green.

Hole by Hole HOLE 10 Hall’s Drive, PAR 4 A good par 4 requiring a straight drive to thread through the fairway bunkers. A long approach over a newly installed pond must be kept to the left to stay away from a large greenside bunker which protects the right side of the green. A slightly two-tiered green to deal with, sloping from front to back. HOLE 11 The Wents, PAR 3 The 11th is similar to the 6th hole, with greenside bunkers at the front and both

sides, meaning your shot has to fly all the way to the green. Another two-tieredgreen so check the pin position when walking to the 2nd to leave youwith the best chance of making theputt.

HOLE 12 Mill, PAR 4/5 The signature hole of the course. A long sweeping par 4/5 from Left to right, aiming at the marker post with the drive will leave you in an ideal position. You will then have two ditches to face with the decision to lay up short or go over the top with your approach. Longer hitters can take driver and

flight the trees on the right but this is high risk with out of bounds right and gorse left.

HOLE 13 Ditch, PAR 3 A tough par 3 with trees guarding the left of the tee, a ditch runs in front of the green around 50 yards short so make sure to clear this. A small green so a solid centre of green shot is advised.

Hole by Hole HOLE 14 School, PAR 4 A tough tee shot with a large oak tree guarding the right and internal out of bounds running along the left side. A slightly raised green which falls off on both sides and at the back meaning to hit the green is difficult. Short is advisable to leave a straight chip up on to the green. HOLE 15 Hades, PAR 4 Another layup hole wanting only 170 yards off the tee to keep on the top level to leave around

130 left for your approach. Gorse positioned long and on the right side so left is the miss area. The long hitters may fancy a go at driving the green but wanting 270 yards of carry it isn’t advised.

HOLE 16 The Deans, PAR 4 The easiest hole on the course with a dead straight fairway to the green, the 15th fairway not being a bad miss as this will still leave you a simple approach in. Long hitters will open up the shoulders and go for the green. HOLE 17 Memorial, PAR 4 A sweeping hole from right to left with the

drive wanting to be a layup on the top tier of the fairway so no more than 210 yards off the tee is required. This will leave just over 130 yards for your approach over some gorse to the green. Left side of the green is advisable as a bank on the right of the green leaves an awkward chip.

HOLE 18 Daveys, PAR 3 Very tough finishing hole, out of bounds long of the green and big slope off to the right of the green, so tee shot has to stay left. With deceiving slopes on the green don’t be disappointed with a four.
