Welcome

N

orth Foreland Golf Club, situated at Broadstairs in Kent, is an unrivalled chalk downland freedraining course offering all-yearround golf together with stunning scenery and breathtaking views of the sea from every tee and green.

Founded in 1903 and steeped in history, the course is situated on the Kent coast at the point where the English Channel meets the North Sea. Originally a nine-hole course, in 1912 Fowler and Simpson were employed to design the existing full 18 holes so enjoyed by so many to this day.

4 | www.n o rthforel a nd.co.uk

In addition to the main course, which measures 6,436 yards off the championship tees, we have a challenging par 3 short course which offers the perfect environment for beginners to learn the game or more proficient players to hone their short game skills.

North Foreland has a spacious, modern and welcoming clubhouse which offers a magnificent venue for civil wedding ceremonies, wedding receptions, parties and any other occasion you would care to celebrate with us. Our welcome is guaranteed to be a warm one, the catering has an enviable reputation and allied to the excellent service offered by our efficient and friendly staff we are confident an initial visit will prove to be the first of many.

There is much at North Foreland to enjoy and whether potential member, visitor or golfing society, we invite you to visit us and sample our hospitality and exceptional facilities both on and off the course.

The Beginning of the Club

T

he North Foreland Golf Club started out as just a wealthy man’s playground filled with gothic “ruins” and castles, but after the land was passed to several different landowners it started its magnificent transformation into the golf club we all know and love today.

Lord Avebury and William Capel Slaughter were responsible for the founding of North Foreland Golf Club in 1903 and, with Sir Luke Fildes and Clifford Brookes, sat on the first committee of the new club. Within a few years thoughts turned to enlarging the course to 18 holes and it was then that the committee turned to another member, Alfred Charles William Harmsworth, later Lord Northcliffe. Harmsworth was the owner of the large estate on the other side of Convent Road.

6 | www.n o rthforel a nd.co.uk

Taking a lease on this additional land gave the course its most outstanding landmark - the North Foreland Lighthouse, which became the proud emblem of North Foreland Golf Club. The role of Lord Northcliffe, in transforming “an average course on poor quality land” into one of the most popular seaside courses in the country is without comparison. In 1918, Northcliffe purchased the tower and convent fields from the trustees of the Slaughter Estate so that he then owned the whole of the golf course. The period of North Foreland’s life that followed, arguably became the most dynamic and interesting in its first 100 years, ranging from prosperity to bankruptcy.

Once in his possession, Northcliffe announced a programme of major course developments. With money apparently no object, his plan was to make the course more challenging and attractive to holiday visitors and work started almost immediately. Alongside the 12th hole of the main course (now the 18th), Northcliffe built a new miniature approaching and putting course of 18 holes, the first of its kind in the country.

The main course also underwent major changes ranging from sand bunkers to replace the grass bunkers, chains of hills constructed across the course, five holes being drastically altered to enhance game play, to tennis courts being built close to the new clubhouse. Northcliffe died in 1922, but his influence carried on long after his death.

But this is not the end of North Foreland Golf Club’s enthralling history, far from it. In “North Foreland Golf Club founded 1903 - A celebration of over 100 years of golf at Kingsgate in Kent” by Arthur King and Tony Lavender, you can read about the characters and events that occurred during that dynamic period of the club’s history between 1919 and 1940, when North Foreland was at its zenith. It also recalls how, as the war approached, the club fell into decline and finally, with the outbreak of war itself, the North Foreland Golf Club Ltd was wound up, its assets sold and the golf club’s membership books closed.

Our Courses

O

n a glorious summer day, there’s simply no better place to be. With commanding views to the North Sea and lush emerald fairways and greens, our two courses offer a combination of beauty and sporting challenge.

The Main or Long Course comprises four par-3, three par-5 and eleven par-4 holes. Spaced over rolling cliff-top terrain, this seascape vista is an open view from every hole and the broad fairways instil a sense of relaxation and tee-shot confidence. Don’t be fooled! Strategically placed bunkers await and that all-important second shot needs careful thought: making and holding the greens is deceptively tricky. The three short par 3s look innocuous but fire off line and recovery is far from easy. The fourth and longer par three requires length with accuracy and is a fine test as our 18th hole. The par-5 holes are fair and straightforward until you encounter the wind, which is often.

On average most of the par-4 holes, depending on that wind again, can be reached in two but the 8th and 9th both offer a considerable challenge and one feels successful with a bogey on each. The variety and quality of our 18 holes leads to much admiration and praise and we are proud to be able to provide a wonderful day-in day-out golfing experience to all of our members and visitors alike. The par-54 Northcliffe Short Course offers a perfect environment for beginners to the game of golf whilst still being able to frustrate the most able of golfers with its idiosyncratic charm.

Take A Tour Of The Main Course

• Hole 1, 334 yards, Par 4

• Hole 2, 274 yards, Par 4

• Hole 4, 476 yards, Par 5

Position your tee shot down towards the right-hand bunker. The second shot is relatively straightforward, but problems arise when the second shot is played at an angle to the green. This enhances the risk of catching the greenside bunker or hitting the slope on the left that careers the ball towards the trees and out of bounds. Can be an easy birdie or a double bogey, caution is advised.

Short par 4. Cleverly bunkered near the green, reachable with a big drive, invites the element of risk. An iron off the tee leaves a wedge, but we all like to say “I drove a par four.” The choice is yours, fortune favours the brave...

The tee is set far back into the trees bordering the course. The drive is very important as trees are to be carried and a bunker in the fairway and down the right are to be avoided. Played downwind, both holes three and four are great birdie opportunities and should be taken, as the course will bite back at a later stage.

• Hole 3, 485 yards, Par 5 A relatively short par 5 that requires an accurate drive between the fairway bunkers left and right as well as the rough on the left and the trees on the right. This leaves a chance to reach in two. The green is well protected with bunkers and fast running from front to back.

1 0 | www.n o rthf orel a nd.co.uk

• Hole 5, 142 yards, Par 3 This hole belies its distance. It has a narrow green situated at the most exposed point of the course and can play anything from a wedge to a three iron. The green is protected by deep bunkers which can test your bunker play.

• Hole 6, 331 yards, Par 4

• Hole 8, 466 yards, Par 4

• Hole 9, 455 yards, Par 4

Short par four. Beware the well-positioned bunkers on the left and right of the fairway. Often an iron short of the bunkers, then a pitch to the long green is the way to proceed.

The first of two daunting par fours to finish the front nine. Both are usually played into the wind, both have been and will be, card wreckers. An intimidating drive to carry rough to a sloping fairway flowing right to left. There are two bunkers situated eighty yards short of the green that will catch anything hit less than perfectly. A large bunker awaits left of the green and a grassy hollow to the right. A four here feels like an eagle.

Slightly uphill across a valley, you need to avoid the two bunkers on the right. This leaves a very long second shot with trees all along the left. The green has a slight tier and care has to be taken not to three putt.

• Hole 7, 160 yards, Par 3 Very good par three played to an interesting green opposite the Captain Digby pub. Again, club selection depends on the wind direction, but as a rule of thumb, plays one club longer than the fifth. Green rises at the front, then slopes to the back.

w w w. no rth f o r e l a nd. co. u k | 1 1

Take A Tour Of The Main Course (continued)

• Hole 10, 413 yards, Par 4

• Hole 11, 144 yards, Par 3

• Hole 12, 437 yards, Par 4

A careful drive down the left is the favourite as the fairway runs from left to right. Avoid the bushes on the left that are visible from the tee. Meticulous care has to be taken with the second shot. The green looks innocuous, but has real venom. Take a four any day of the week, if you can.

Usually played into a breeze, plays longer than the yardage suggests. Do not miss the green left or be too long, as an up and down is difficult. Green is undulating.

An uphill dogleg. Care has to be taken on this gem. A straight tee shot is required to avoid fairway bunkers left and right. Only the big hitters can reach the cross-bunkers at 300 yards. The hole funnels to a two-tier green that is protected with out of bounds left and a large bunker set in a mound to the right. A wise choice would be to play for a bogey.

1 2 | www.n o rthf orel a nd.co.uk

• Hole 13, 409 yards, Par 4

• Hole 14, 388 yards, Par 4

• Hole 15, 364 yards, Par 4

All downhill to the beach. The perfect line is the lighthouse. Hit on this line, the ball rolls back to the middle of the fairway. Stray too close to the left bunker at your peril. The fast-running two-tier green situated opposite the Joss Bay beach offers a good chance of a birdie if you can hit it in regulation.

Anything other than an accurate drive will make this hole difficult to par. It is played up the hill and, more often than not, into the wind. Avoiding the bunker on the right is the first task. Choosing the right club for the second shot is the next task. Always play one more club and two if the flag ball marker is up the top. Again, the green is a challenge.

Back to the clubhouse. A good line from the tee is the clubhouse clock. Not the longest par four, but has to be treated with respect, as there is out of bounds by the putting green and over the green. Beware the pot bunker to the right of the green.

Take A Tour Of The Main Course (continued)

• Hole 16, 512 yards, Par 5

• Hole 17, 449 yards, Par 4

• Hole 18, 197 yards, Par 3

Shortish par five that runs downhill. Usually played with the prevailing wind and an excellent chance to pick up a birdie. A good drive, missing the bunker on the right, enables a chance to go for the green in two.

Walk off this hole with a par, and you have a major achievement under your belt. Inevitably, played into the wind plays very long indeed. The hole meanders into a valley and rises where the green is situated. A good drive down the right is required to have any chance of getting to the green in two. Hit plenty of club for the second shot, as the rise is deceiving. An interesting green with many subtle borrows.

Great par three to finish. A large bunker protects the green on the right, with out of bounds looming on the left and behind the green. An elevated tee crosses the valley to a green on the same level. Can play a driver when the wind is against. Also has the additional pressure of observation from the clubhouse. Walk off here with a three and tell the tale in the nineteenth.

The Northcliffe Course

E

ven before its construction, the Northcliffe Course captured the imagination of golfing pundits and players from far and wide. In 1919, and in eager anticipation, the Daily Mirror newspaper hailed the arrival of a course containing greens ‘cunningly bunkered and with all sorts of trouble, seen and unseen’. And on its completion in 1920, the Daily Mail celebrated the arrival of a course where every hole had ‘a character of its own’.

Since those early auspicious days, the 54-par Northcliffe Course has survived the test of time and gone from strength to strength. In addition to providing excellent golf and honing the short game on holes that vary in distance from 50 to 140 yards, the Northcliffe Course has become part of the wider community.

Entrance to the Northcliffe Course is through the thatched Lychgate, which was built in 2005 and largely paid for by the Daily Mail thanks to Vyvyan Harmsworth, a descendent of Lord Northcliffe and director of Associated Newspapers.

North Foreland’s lease with Thanet Council requires the club to provide a golfing facility without players having to be a member of the club. This provision has enabled generations of players to ‘pay and play’ and be introduced to the magic of golf and gain confidence in the game. As these players learn to love golf and admirably cope with its occasional frustrations, many go on to become members of North Foreland Golf Club.

Juniors

N

orth Foreland is committed to growing the game of golf and doing everything it can to introduce our wonderful sport to a whole new generation of players. We have a strong junior section cultivated by our talented team of teaching professionals. Hour-long coaching sessions are held every Saturday morning, first for the younger golfers and then for the older and more experienced players, with children able to turn up on the day and for a modest fee enjoy an hour’s tuition.

While the emphasis is on fun and enjoyment, these sessions are structured, with 20 minutes each being devoted to putting, either chipping or pitching and to the long game.

The juniors have a team in the North Kent League and the club also hosts a Junior Open each April, a medal event played on the long course which attracts some of the area’s finest young golfers.

The older children are sometimes taken on to the short course, which is a wonderful facility we have at our disposal for people wishing to learn the game.

Aaron Galbraith, our popular junior organiser, also runs junior golf days and North Foreland is delighted to be able to host golf-themed birthday parties for youngsters.

Getting the basics and fundamentals correct now can lead to a lifetime’s enjoyment of this great game and eliminate many of the struggles experienced by adult players who discover the delights of golf later in life but have difficulty grasping the technique.

Visitors

W

e think we have something really special here at North Foreland and are eager to share this experience with others. A terrific, challenging and historic course, together with a majestic clubhouse with wonderful views and first class catering backed up by service of the highest order by our friendly staff.

Sound too good to be true? Come see for yourself, we would be delighted for you to put us to the test. The golfing thrill offered by our course is something to be appreciated, certainly, but so is the warm and genuine welcome offered by our team. Visitors are treated as if they have been lifelong members here and it is little surprise that a first trip to North Foreland is rarely the last. You see groups flicking through their diaries just before leaving hoping to come up with a mutually convenient day where they can come and savour playing North Foreland again.

In the less busy winter months in particular there are some outstanding deals to be had offering golf followed by a snack or more substantial meal, all for a very reasonable price. Make sure you check out our website, www.northforeland.co.uk, so you are in a position to take advantage of the latest offers. Day tickets represent excellent value for those wishing to play more than 18 holes and there is also a reduced twilight rate for players able to tee off at less busy times later in the day. To enquire about booking a tee-time, call the Office on 01843 862140 and ask for Pauline or Tony.
