History P
enrith Golf Club was officially formed on the 13th May, 1890 and has enjoyed a long and proud tradition. Its inception was perhaps not the usual one, renting land from a racecourse for use as a golf links is unusual. Nevertheless, this very arrangement brought with it advantages and disadvantages to the first members. For one, the course was provided with some ready-made fairways, and under the terms of the lease, golfers had priority on the fairways. However, it’s understood there were very few golfers prepared to stand firm in the face of a cavalry charge by horses in full time training. Penrith Golf Club
A man was employed daily to replace the divots and make good, this continued until race meetings “finished” in 1896, among accusations and incriminations of “fixing”. The men had been playing for only three months when they agreed that a ladies’ section should be formed and the ladies were free to play on any day of the weekexcept Sunday’s where there was no play at all! Ladies have always continued to play a vital and important role in the life of the club. The club played its first match versus Carlisle, and lost by six holes to twenty five.
Since those early days the parkland course has seen much change, although evidence of the former racecourse history can still be seen today on the 13th, 15th, 17th and 18th fairways. The current 18 holes course was officially opened on the 24th April, 1913, with a large crowd witnessing well-known professionals Harry Varden, and Ted Ray, play against club professional, W. West, and the club champion S.W.Fletcher. Many of the new holes, had been laid out by Troon professional Willie Fernie.

In 1918 during the First World War the club was suspended, with a large part of the course ploughed up for food production. Reinstatement and improvement of the course got underway in 1920, when further expert advice was sought from leading golf architect Dr. Alister MacKenzie (of Augusta fame). His report concluded: “You have every opportunity of constructing by far the best inland course in the North West of England”. With a large part of the course having been ploughed up during the war, he was disappointed to see that the land had lost much of its high quality turf and soil.
Nevertheless Dr. MacKenzie recognised the importance of Penrith Golf Club, through its strategic position near to the Lake District. The 13th green still bears the famous McKenzie stepped green construction. Work on the new improved course started in earnest in 1922, together with the addition of a new clubhouse. Further enhancements to the clubhouse were made in 1936. A new lounge, kitchen and men’s locker room were added in 1966, with further improvements to both the clubhouse and course made in the 1970’s. The most recent major refurbishment to the clubhouse and
locker rooms was undertaken in time for the Millennium year 2000. The club enjoyed an enjoyable Centenary Year in 1990, with a programme of events being carried out throughout the year, including, hosting the Girls Home Internationals, and British Girls Championships.

History The club has also enjoyed a number of notable members. In the early days Lord Lonsdale, and in more recent times, The Right Honourable William Whitelaw, who served as Home Secretary in the Margaret Thatcher Government. The Right Honourable Whitelaw, was elected Captain of the R&A in 1970, presenting the famous Open Championship Claret Jug to Jack Nicklaus, who beat Doug Sanders at St Andrews, in that same year. He also served as club President from 1982 to 1988. Presidency of the English Golf Union fell to Penrith member Mr. W.J. Milburn, who was elected President in 1966, he Penrith Golf Club

also served the club in various official capacities for 36 years. Other notable club members have included Bev Risman, one of the very few players to be capped by England at both Rugby Union and Rugby League, and also captained the Great Britain Rugby League Squad in the 1968 Rugby League World Cup held in Australia and New Zealand. Penrith member Gary Lockerbie, was a member of the Walker Cup Team in 2005, playing at the Chicago Golf Club, and joined the European Tour in 2007.
Graham Monkhouse, again one of the few who have played professional sport at both Cricket and Football. 1st Class Cricketer with Surrey and Goalkeeper with Workington. Over the years Penrith has enjoyed a visit from a number of golfing greats. In 1937, the 4 times British Open Champion and 2 time USA Open Champion. Walter Hagen had in that year captained the victorious USA Ryder Cup Team, at Southport. The Ryder Cup came to the fore once again when a party of Ryder Cup players staged an exhibition game in August, 1947. Ken Bousfield, going on to set a then new course record score of 65.

Members of today continue to play for a large number of annual trophies, with the oldest being the Lonsdale Cup, donated by Lord Lonsdale, in 1901, and the Club Championship Trophy, dating back to 1903. Since then many other fine trophies have come into being with the America Cup, one of the more notable. Donated in 1926, it followed a most enjoyable visit to Penrith, by Mr Duncan H. Read of the Apawamis Golf Club, New York. The trophy has in the past been played to the nearest date to America’s Independence Day.
Today Penrith Golf Club continues to enjoy an excellent reputation for its fine golf course, and outstanding views of the World renowned Lake District Fells, which offer a dramatic backdrop to many of its holes. In 2016 Penrith Golf Club, was extremely proud to be voted England Golf Mark Club of the Year. The golf mark status remains an important part of the club’s ethos.
Penrith Golf Club, is grateful to all members past and present for their support and their wish to see the club grow and prosper. There is simply no better place than Penrith, with its excellent geographical position, giving golfers from all over the UK, and the world the chance to enjoy a very warm welcome and a fine golfing experience. About the Course P
enrith is a Cumbrian golf course situated in a splendid location overlooking the world renowned Lake District and the delightful Eden Valley. The parkland course was formed on 13th May 1890 on the site of a former racecourse. Nine holes were laid out around the oval racecourse, traces of which can still be seen on the 13th, 15th, 17th and 18th fairways. The 18 holes course was officially opened on 24th April, 1913 but in 1918 the club was suspended during the war with a large part of the course being ploughed up for food production. Reinstatement
and improvement of the course started in 1922 together with the addition of a new clubhouse in 1936. The Lakeland fells provide a magnificent backdrop to this par 69 (Mens) css 71 & par 72 (Ladies) css 72, 6042 yard course formed in 1890. The course contains 2 par 5’s and 5 par 3’s which vary from a tricky little par 3 10th hole playing at just over 100yds from the yellow and red tees up to almost 150 yards off the back tees to a very well protected green to our 9th hole one which is possibly one of the hardest par 3’s you will play at over 200 yards to a sloping green.
Easily reached and a matter of minutes from the M6, junctions 40 or 41, Penrith Golf Club is also the perfect additional venue for any golfing trip to and from Scotland. If you have never played at Penrith Golf Club before you are in for a treat. Remember to take in the views of the Lakeland fells whilst playing and use our Professionals tips for playing the course to make your trip even more enjoyable. A straightforward opening hole, where hitting the fairway will leave a medium to short iron to a green protected by 3 bunkers. Avoid going long as this will leave a difficult chip back onto the green. A par here is a great way to start your round.
A short dogleg par 4 that despite its length can prove very tricky. Keep the tee shot to the right side of the fairway to avoid the trees which overhang the left hand side of the fairway. The ideal tee shot is aimed at the marker post or slightly right of it if hitting a fairway wood or long iron. This will leave a short iron to a long narrow green but beware of catching the tree which overhangs the front left of the green. Longer hitters can go for the green, ideally hitting a draw off the marker post but beware of overdoing it.
A long par 4 that bends slightly right to left. A drive to the centre or right side of the fairway leaves a long iron or fairway wood to the green. Often best played as a 3 shot hole with the 2nd shot hit over the grass cross bunkers 100yds short of the green leaving a short pitch to the green still giving the chance of making a par.

Although only 170yds from the back tees it is a tough target to hit. The tee shot is played through a narrow avenue of trees. The green is now protected by 3 bunkers to the left and 3 to the right of the green. Play to the front for a safe par or take on the pin and risk the Out of Bounds over the wall at the back and the road to the clubhouse on the of the green, Club selection is key here.
The longest par 4 on the course with Out of Bounds over the wall to the left and trees all the way up the right, the tee shot is a test for any golfer. A three shot hole for most players best played by clearing the grass cross bunkers with your second shot, thus setting up your approach. Make sure to take enough club to make it up the steep slope at the front of the green! as anything landing on the slope will roll back down onto the fairway.
Another strong par 4. The hole plays downhill with trees on both sides of the fairway. A really inviting tee shot and if played off the back tees gives a fantastic view of the Lakeland fells in the distance. Avoid the fairway bunker on the right of the fairway from the tee and this should leave a medium iron to a green protected by 3 bunkers. Try to avoid missing the green in the swale to the right of the green as this will leave a difficult up and down. Making a par here is always a great result.

A gentle right to left dog leg. A tee shot to the centre right of the fairway will leave you in the perfect position to play to the green which slopes from front to back. Avoid hitting your approach past the flag as this will leave a lightning quick putt down the green! If your approach shot is kept below the hole this is a good chance of a making the putt.
A left to right dog leg played from an elevated tee. The view from the back tee is one of the most talked about and remembered on the course overlooking the Lakeland fells. Avoiding the 3 fairway bunkers on the right side of the fairway is ideal. The tee shot will be to the left side of the fairway leaving a medium to short iron to the green. The slope to the left hand side can be used to feed balls back onto the green. 3 bunkers short and right protect the green so take enough club to clear them.
The 9th is probably one of the toughest par 3 holes you will play anywhere. At well over 200yds from the back tees the 9th is played downhill to an undulating sloping narrow green. The best place to miss this green is short leaving a chip straight up the green. Any miss to the right or left will leave a tough chip. Make a par on this hole and you will be extremely happy.

The shortest hole on the course which can be anywhere in length from 93 yards to 135 yards from the back tees. Club selection can be difficult. Even though this is a short hole, the green is protected by a series of deep bunkers to the front and a steep slope at the back. This little hole has ruined many score cards. Pro tip – ignore the flag and despite the short length of this hole play to the middle of the green and take your chance with the putter. Don’t be misled by the length of this hole as a 3 is always a good score here.
A downhill par 4 with a slight left to right dog leg. A tee shot over or just left of the marker will leave a short downhill 2nd shot, this is a good birdie chance if the tee shot is on the fairway. Avoid the out of bounds down the left hand side. The long hitters may fancy have a go at driving the green but putting the tee shot on the fairway will more often lead to a better chance of making birdie.
A good tee shot to carry an ancient quarry is a must. The hole dog legs left and the approach to the green is a testing uphill shot with the ball often above your feet which always plays longer than you think, take an extra club. Try to reach the flatter part of the fairway off the tee aiming at the marker or just to the right of it to avoid a hanging lie which will make hitting the green a challenge! Bunkers left and right await any stray shot. A par 4 is a good result here.

A dogleg right to left with trees and water on the left side and out of bounds on the right. A tee shot to the centre or right side of the fairway (aim at the low spot in the wall) will leave a medium iron to a green protected by bunkers on the front left and right of the green. Use the ridge running through the green to help get your approach close to the hole if the flag is on the left hand of the green.
A par 3 of just over 150yds from the back tees. Pay careful attention to the flag position and play to the wide part of the green as missing the green and leaving yourself short-sided will leave a tough up and down.
The first par 5 of your round, it is a slight dogleg from right to left. A tee shot towards the marker post is the safest line. Longer hitters must beware of the ditch at 275 yards either playing short or taking on the carry. Avoiding the fairway bunker with the 2nd shot will leave a short pitch for your 3rd into a green which slopes away from you and is protected on both sides by bunkers. Play it right and you may have a putt for birdie!

The last par 3 of the round. A long iron, hybrid or fairway wood required from the tee to a green which is difficult to hit. With bunkers to the left and a pot bunker to the right, playing for the front of the green is the best option, but beware anything short will be gathered by the slope. This is a hole where a par is always a great score.
Aim for the marker from the tee, the ball will catch the down slope leaving a medium iron to the green. Aim your 2nd shot for the front and left side of the green to avoid the bunkers to the right. Often played into the wind, a par is a good score here.
The final hole of your round. A short par five with out of bounds to the right and trees to the left. A straight tee shot will give you a choice of laying up short of the bunkers which cross the fairway 50yds short of the green or clearing them and going for the green in 2. A good birdie chance to finish your round before sampling the hospitality of the clubhouse.

Custom Fitting T
here has been a growing realisation in recent years that golfing tuition ought to go hand-in-hand with the equipment that allows each player to make the absolute utmost of whatever level of natural talent they possess. Golf clubs merely bought off the shelf will be of a standard specification but unfortunately golfers are not, coming in all shapes and sizes. The reality is that a golfer could have a perfectly acceptable technique but still be held back because their clubs are not entirely suitable to their swing.
This is where custom fitting comes in, a relatively new phenomenon that allows a set of golf clubs to be built to marry with each golfer’s individual physique and swing characteristics.
Even the top professionals struggle to maintain the same fundamentally sound swing characteristics every time, so it is a lot to ask for the average golfer to do likewise.
Custom fitting is something that is easily and seriously offered at Penrith Golf Club and we pride ourselves in what we do. We offer a full range of products all available for custom fitting.
Customising the clubs to ideally position the golfer for their physical characteristics will train him or her to address the ball with the correct posture and swing along the ideal swing plane, which creates the correct impact position and better scores.
This service costs less than you think and can bring about a dramatic improvement in ball striking.

Tuition W
hether you are an accomplished player or looking to get into the game, the quickest and easiest way to play better golf, lower your scores and handicap, is to book a lesson with our PGA Professionals. Penrith Golf Club is pleased to have talented professionals who are always on hand to assist and advise. Learning the correct thought process can often be an eye-opening and rewarding experience for the novice player leading to better scores. We understand golf is a ‘Game for Life’, so our lessons are tailor-made to suit the individual, aiming towards improving people’s performance and enjoyment of the game.
This is achieved through precise swing analysis followed by clear instruction and easy-to-follow practice drills.
