Welcome Set in over 235 acres of Buckinghamshire parkland, Richings Park Golf Club is one of the friendliest clubs in the county, with visitors instantly made to feel welcome by our members and accommodating staff.

We also provide everything that a golfer would expect at a relatively new purpose-built club. The Pro Shop stocks a full range of equipment and clothing while our two PGA Professionals are on hand to offer expert tuition.

Opened for play in 1995, Richings Park is home to a superb 18 hole, par 70 golf course that measures 6,327 yard from the white tees and provides a delightful yet challenging golfing environment for both members and visitors alike.

Our converted clubhouse has exceptional facilities including the bar, restaurant and main function room where social and business functions take place throughout the year.

A great golf course is nothing without the practice facilities to back it up and here we have a whole range of state-of-theart equipment that allows golfer to get the absolute utmost out of their game.

The course is open all year round with no temporary tees or greens and, as it is conveniently located, Richings Park is ideally suited whether you are looking for the perfect course for a society day, a quick round of 18 holes or a relaxing drink in the clubhouse.

With a 300-yard driving range, a chipping practice area and a putting green, our members and visitors are able to perfect their game before stepping on the course.

HISTORY Despite its relative youth in the world of golf, Richings Park Golf Club and the land on which it sits has a long history. The land was originally awarded to John Richking and his son Edmund in 1402 and they acquired further land in 1422 and 1434. The estate later passed to the Salter family, who were courtiers to King James I and Charles I, before coming into the ownership of Lord Bathurst in the 18th century. Lord Bathurst commissioned Stephen Switzer to landscape the estate, which once hosted a canal suitable to carry a pleasure boat. The Manor House, whose cellars and foundations still exist in the grounds, was situated to the south of North Park and gave Richings Park its name.

6

www.richingspark.co.uk

The tree-lined route, landscaped for Lord Bathhurst, is still evident, and there was also a menagerie on the site of St Leonard’s chapel, which was located to the west side of the house. 18th century literary figures, including Alexander Pope, Thomas Gray and Joseph Addison, were inspired by the mansion and its well-timbered park. The Duke of Somerset, after purchasing the estate in 1739, had the parkland remodelled and, after his death in 1740, his widow renamed the house Percy House. The estate changed hands several times until being purchased by William Boyer in 1938. The original mansion was destroyed by a fire in 1788 and its replacement was later bombed in World War II and sadly demolished after the war in 1946.

It had become Bomber Command Headquarters for the RAF along with Parlaunt Park Farm (now the site of the Royal Mail) just the other side of Sutton Lane; purchased by Hawker Siddeley in 1938. The factory built on the Sutton Lane site became the largest factory to produce the Hurricane fighter plane, which was so key to our air defences during the war. The factory produced over 8000 planes for the war effort, many of which took off across the parkland of Richings Park and were flown by the A.T.A. (Air Transport Auxilliary), to the hundreds of airfields across the UK.

In the ‘90s the land was converted into a golf course by the Boyer family and, after being designed by golf course architect Alan Higgins, celebrated its first full golf year in 1995. In 2004, the Gaisford-St Lawrence family purchased the golf club and today are proud to offer the 18 hole golf course and driving range to both members and visitors, while regularly providing a beautiful venue for weddings and parties. Constantly looking to the future and keen to diversify, a brand new Footgolf course was launched in April 2015, with a new Academy course also set to open in 2015.

The final Hurricane built (a MkIIC serialled PZ865, which still flies today with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight) was completed here on 15 September 1944 and named ‘Last of The Many’ in a special ceremony.

ABOUT THE COURSE The course at Richings Park Golf Club is a spectacular 18 hole, par 70 course that measure 6,327 yards from the white tees. The course benefits from the many of the surviving old trees, which were carefully planted to create a fine setting for the original house, while the 17th is home to an Ice House, which is left over from when the house was occupied. Designed by Alan Higgins and consequently opened for the enjoyment of golfers everywhere in 1995, Richings Park is a fine test of golf that will keep you on your toes and challenged throughout its eighteen holes.

It is laid out on luscious parkland and amongst some fabulous mature trees and spectacular lakes. Watch out also for the wildlife that have free reign across the course, they add to the character and enchanting beauty of Richings Park. The twelve parkland holes set amongst superb old trees, attractive lakes, and the Withy Brook combine uniquely with the six ‘links-style’ holes to present a formidable challenge to golfers of any calibre. USGA spec greens, large teeing areas, and the automated irrigation system, all under the supervision of the Course Manager and Consultant Agronomist, ensures that the course is maintained to the highest standard at all times.

course tour If you have never played at Richings Park Golf Club before you are in for a treat. Make the most of your trip by learning about some of the pitfalls that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you follow our holeby-hole tour.

Hole 2 (Partridge Way) Par 3 - 199 Yards

Hole 1 (Home Wood) Par 4 - 287 Yards

A double “dogleg” where position on the fairway is key. Bunkers and punishing rough will catch the errant shot and the prevailing wind will often be a factor. In summer and with wind behind you there is a chance of reaching the green in two shots.

This short par four offers the challenge of going for the green, or playing percentage golf. To reach the green, the trees on the right of the fairway must be cleared. The safer option is to play up the left hand side then pitch on to the green, avoiding the perils of the sand shelf.

The golf course now takes on a distinct links feel. This is a tricky hole having a smaller green that is well protected by bunkers on both the left and the right hand sides.

Hole 3 (Langley Walk) Par 5 - 545 Yards

course tour Hole 4 (Skylark Bend) Par 4 - 345 Yards

Hole 7 (Oak Corner) Par 4 - 409 Yards

The cross bunker and heavy rough to the left of the fairway make a good position from the tee essential. Follow this by a short approach shot to another well-guarded green.

A wonderfully picturesque but demanding “dogleg”. The tee shot must avoid the large tree on the right hand side of the fairway, and this is followed by an approach to the green that is well protected by the surrounding woodland. This is truly a risk and reward hole, if you aim your tee shot to the right of the tree, over the Eileen Slatter fountain, you can open up your approach to the green.

Hole 5 (The Old Gate) Par 4 - 335 Yards You will need to drive down the right side of the fairway to avoid the bunker that has been perfectly placed on the left hand side to ensnare your tee shot. You will then find that this sloping green is well guarded by bunkers.

Hole 6 (Home Farm) Par 3 - 165 Yards This super par three concludes the links holes. Two mature trees and a well-positioned bunker in front of the green make the target appear very, very small.

Hole 8 (Foxes Covert) Par 4 - 340 Yards Aim for the left half of the fairway to leave a good line into the pin. Finding the putting surface on this green is vital because of the lake surrounding the back of the hole.

course tour Hole 9 (Vixen Crossing) Par 4 - 428 Yards

Hole 12 (The Swannery) Par 4 - 328 Yards

A hole calling for great accuracy, holding your nerve across the lake towards the strategically placed bunkers waiting to catch the wayward drive, then on to this well defended green.

A short par four but with no shortage of hazards. Care must be taken to avoid the large cross bunker before playing a well placed approach shot to a green guarded by four strategically placed bunkers.

Hole 10 (The Ha Ha) Par 3 - 172 Yards

Hole 13 (Pheasants) Par 4 - 356 Yards

This is another excellent par three, guarded by dense woodland to the left, and the Ha Ha on the right hand side of the fairway.

A slight respite from the bunkers on this hole. The tee shot should favour the right half of the fairway which will then leave a straightforward approach to a slightly elevated and tricky green.

Hole 11 (Chestnut Bend) Par 4 - 417 Yards Strategy is important here due to the trouble down the left hand side. Firstly, the tee shot must be shaped around the huge chestnut tree to open up the approach to the green. Then take care to avoid the lake to the left, and the greenside bunker, before putting out on this tricky green.

Hole 14 (Mansion Copse) Par 3 - 201 Yards This long par three is likely to test the best, particularly when the prevailing wind comes into play, making club selection critical.

course tour Hole 15 (Lime Walk) Par 4 - 420 Yards

Hole 17 (The Ice House) Par 5 - 547 Yards

Another excellent par four with lakes on either side of the fairway that make it particularly important to find the fairway off the tee. The approach shot is then played to a small green nestling in mature woodland.

The drive needs to be to the left and just past the bunker to offer you two choices. Either attack the green by playing across the lake, or play to the apex of the “dogleg” before pitching onto the green, yet another risk and reward hole.

Hole 16 (Rushes) Par 4 - 431 Yards

Hole 18 (Withy Brook) Par 4 - 402 Yards

Trouble from the tee again, with dense woodland to the left and the lake on the right. The hole then “doglegs” slightly to the left around a bunker that is also in play off the tee.

What a beautiful finishing hole. A well-struck tee shot is required to allow you to attack the green. Anything mishit will be punished and require a lay up short of the Withy Brook. An accurate approach shot is needed on this challenging green which is set back in a small forest of trees.

golf tuition Richings Park Golf Club is blessed with an excellent PGA trained Professional ready to help you with your golf game and also offer a full club repair service. The Head Professional at Richings Park is Colin Ancsell who firmly believes quick fixes are two-a-penny; permanent progress is far harder to find. Therefore, as every pupil has different goals, aspirations and time constraints, Colin knows it is essential to understand what those are before committing to a course of action. This then enables him to see an obvious improvement in what the ball is doing in every single lesson.

In his opinion, if improvement is taking a long time, either the information you are receiving is wrong or not appropriate for you. This is why, at considerable expense, he has invested in the best technology and is always trying to learn from the most knowledgeable and innovative people in golf. Colin is ably assisted by two more professional golfers in his team. For more information or to book a lesson with one of our Professionals call the Pro Shop on 01753 655352.

Driving Range and Practice Facilities Opened in May 2011, it homes a six bay indoor range and eight outdoor bays. The range measures 300 yards and, with well-placed targets, it enables you to work on your swing and short game skills whatever the weather. For those wishing to work on their short game, there is a putting green located on the way to the 1st tee, which has been specifically prepared to enable golfers to get a feel for the speed of the greens they will encounter on the course.

In April 2015 we built a five-hole academy course which is located next to the 1st tee. Featuring full-length holes, it is perfect for beginners to perfect their game before taking on the main course.

If you don’t often have the time for a full round of 18 holes, you may find Driving Range membership is for you. It entitles you to discounts in the Pro Shop, Bar and naturally on the Driving Range, and costs considerably less than our full membership.

Tucked away behind 10th tee there is also a chipping green and bunker available to golfers looking to perfect those round-saving up-and-downs.

members’ golf Members of Richings Park enjoy a full programme of golf throughout the year. There is always something to suit your handicap, age and golfing desire at RPGC and you will certainly never be short of playing opportunities. Men’s Section

If you fancy a change of scene, we are fortunate to have reciprocal arrangements with three other courses within a 50-mile radius.

Ladies Section A Ladies section with its own committee has been established at Richings Park ever since the club was founded.

The Men’s section at Richings Park is very active with an extremely friendly membership and opportunities to play both social and competitive golf seven days a week.

Lady members meet primarily on a Wednesday morning with dedicated tee slots, however, the course is available to ladies seven days a week with very few restrictions.

In addition to the usual monthly medals and stablefords, there are summer and winter match play knock-outs, plus many summer competitions. With these offering men an opportunity to have fun while keeping competitive spirits high. Weekday member roll ups throughout the week are highly popular and mean that it is possible to meet plenty of members very quickly.

The Ladies are also very active in their desire to play competitive golf, with the ladies entering the BCLGA winter and summer scratch leagues.

38

www.richingspark.co.uk

However, for Business Ladies who find time is at a premium, there are also special tee times that are set-aside on weekend mornings.

Senior Section

Junior Section

The Senior’s section is for over 55’s only and is by far the most active at Richings Park, meeting every Tuesday morning come rain or shine.

The club has a small Junior section, with a Junior Coaching Academy running most of the events and tuition that Juniors can take advantage of at Richings Park.

This section have matches against most of the M4 corridor clubs, playing both home and away. The veterans meet up on Friday mornings for a convivial chat before playing a nice leisurely round of golf.

We have recently secured Golf Mark accreditation, the England Golf seal of approval to ensure that all children are taught in a safe environment.

There is plenty of golf arranged for both the competitive and not so competitive golfer with medals, stablefords and other trophy competitions as well as lots of fun golf.

With roll-up matches of some form at the club nearly every day of the week, many local matches and plenty of social golf, there really is something for everybody at Richings Park. For more information please speak to a member of the golf team by calling 01753 655352 or email: proshop@richingspark.co.uk

footgolf Exactly as the name implies, FootGolf a crazy mix of football and golf played over a purpose built 18hole course. Incorporating the precision, power and passion found in both sports, FootGolf combines two of the most popular sports in the world to create one amazing playing experience. The object of the game is to get the ball into the hole using only your feet in the fewest number of shots possible. However, the beauty of the game lies in your being able to strategically combine power and precision every time you step onto the course. FootGolf is great fun for everyone that enjoys a game of football or even a competitive bit of fun with mates - you don’t even have to like golf!

Played in groups of up to six players, it’s great fun for colleagues after a tiring day in the office, something a little different to try with the rest of your football team or even for a children’s birthday party or stag do. Balls are provided at a small hire charge, although you can bring your own if you prefer. You need golf shoes or trainers to take part and a scorecard is provided so you can record your score on each hole. FootGolf is available every day from 10am. You can just turn up and play subject to availability, however, as FootGolf is becoming an increasingly popular sport, booking is advisable. For more information or to book a time please call the Pro Shop on 01753 655352.
