History

Rothley Park’s history dates back over one hundred years, making it one of the oldest established clubs in Leicestershire. The first recorded meeting of the Rothley Park Golf Club was held in the clubhouse on 23rd August 1911. At that meeting, chaired by the President, Major Abbott Robinson, the Greens and House Committees were elected, the list of gentlemen and lady members proposed and seconded and the rules and regulations agreed. It was noted that ‘no Caddies were to be allowed on a Sunday’, and the club’s existence commenced.

The land comprising the course, which was part of the Temple Estate was owned by Mr F. Merttens who, as such, was

also the proprietor of the club. Work commenced on the course in earnest and the full 18 holes were opened for play in 1912. An exhibition match between Harry Vardon, JH Taylor and James Braid was arranged on the then ‘Rothley Links’. This coincided with the official opening of the clubhouse and a photograph of the event hangs in the clubhouse today.

In 1915 the members took over ownership of the club, the constitution was altered and the Rothley Park Golf Course Company Limited was registered to administer the lease of the land. This arrangement continued until January 1977 when the members took the courageous decision to purchase the course, all of its buildings and 20 acres

of surrounding farmland. As a result the club’s future was secured and placed in full control of the members, and this remains the case today.

In October of 2017 members voted to change from a private members club to a fully incorporated company limited by guarantee. In April 2018 the new company, Rothley Park Golf Club Ltd, came into being with a board of six Directors led by Chairman, Ian Dawkins. Today, the club is a fine example of how to run a golf club successfully and, while many things have changed since our inception, our dedication to offering the best course in the region is still as strong today as it was in those pioneering days at the beginning of the 20th century.

About the Course

Rothley Park is located in a beautiful parkland setting in Leicestershire, offering a unique challenge to golfers of all abilities. Our long established course is 6,490 yards off the white tees and is often rated in magazines and online reviews as one of the best in the county.

The parkland course makes the most of the natural contours and slopes of the area and offers some stunning views from the highest point on the course at the ninth tee out over Bradgate Park, where you can savour the views of the Old John folly at the Park’s highest point.

The course also runs adjacent to the Great Central Railway, which is the UK’s only double track, main line heritage railway. It’s the only place in the world where full size steam engines can be seen passing each other – just as it was when steam ruled the rails!

Each hole provides its own challenge, with the undulating fairways and subtle borrows on the well-maintained greens adding to this demanding yet delightful test of golf.

The course contains three par threes, thirteen par fours and two par fives, making it a tricky par-71 parkland course,

while the signature hole throughout the 18 is undoubtedly the par five, 521-yard 15th. The hole played downhill, offers superb views towards the Charnwood range, but demands great accuracy, with out of bounds on both sides! The entirety of the lefthand side runs parallel to the Great Central Railway, and whilst negotiating the hole, it is easy to become distracted by the many steam trains running past you as you play.

Course Tour

If you have never played at Rothley Park Golf Club before you are in for a treat. Make the most of your trip by learning about some of the pitfalls that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you follow our hole-by-hole tour.

Hole 1 - Par 4, 393 yards

The opening hole, at, just under 400 yards, would, anywhere else in the round seem like a straightforward hole. However, to add to 1st tee nerves there is out of bounds on the left and the right! A good drive leaves a straightforward approach to a generous green. The second shot is deceptively uphill, so make sure you club up.

Hole 2 - Par 4, 341 yards

The second hole, measuring 341 yards, is a slight dogleg to the left. The tee shot is played across the Rothley brook with the premium being on accuracy over length. A shot of around 220 yards sets up the approach shot, which is played to a raised two-tiered green. Take note of which tier the flag is on, as putting from the wrong one can be tricky.

Hole 3 - Par 4, 427 yards and accuracy from a golfer. Trees hug the left side of the fairway and out of bounds awaits any tee shots hit too far to the right. A long approach is played to a green guarded by a bunker on the left and a

grass swale on the right. The challenge doesn’t stop when the player gets to the green, a spine runs down the length of the green, which can make judging line and pace fiendishly difficult.

Hole 4 - Par 3, 163 yards

The fourth hole is the first par 3 on the course. The green is a double green shared with the 13th hole. There is a large fall from right to left across the green and the green follows the contours of ancient ridge and furrow, so it is important to try and leave your tee shot under the hole and the correct length in order to set up an easier birdie putt.

10 www.rothleypark.co.uk

Hole 5 - Par 4, 251 yards

The fifth hole is a classic risk and reward hole. Measuring only 251 yards, this par 4 tempts you to drive it. Out of bounds hugs the left edge of the hole, so there is no room to miss the green on the left. There is plenty of room on the right hand side, but this leaves a difficult pitch over a bunker to a green that slopes away from the player. A good birdie opportunity, this hole can also be a card wrecker.

Hole 6 - Par 4, 447 yards (Par 5 for Ladies)

The sixth hole at Rothley is one of the prettiest, but most demanding on the course. At 447 yards long and dog legging

to the left, the drive must be hit down the right hand side of the fairway. Anything hit left will leave you blocked out by trees for the second shot. A player faces a decision for their second shot whether or not to try and carry the ditch that runs across the fairway around 50 yards short of the green. The green itself sits in a dell and for the brave anything carrying the ditch will gather down towards it.

Hole 7 - Par 3, 149 yards

The seventh hole is the second of the three par 3s. The shortest hole on the course measuring 149 yards, do not be fooled into thinking this is an easy hole. Played up a steep hill to a narrow two

tiered green, club selection and accuracy are vital. Three deep bunkers await even a marginally errant shot. A par on this hole is always a good score.

Hole 8 - Par 4, 328 yards

The eighth hole is 328 yards long and has a semi-blind tee shot. The golfer has a choice of how to play the hole. Use a driver from the tee and hit it straight sets up a short pitch and a good birdie opportunity, but with trees on the right and out of bounds on the left, the penalties for a wayward shot are great. The more conservative will use a 3 wood from the tee and leave a mid-iron to a small but gently sloping green.

www.rothleypark.co.uk 11

Course Tour Continued

Hole 9 - Par 4, 457 yards

The ninth hole is the longest par 4 at 457 yards. The fairway is laid out in front of the golfer, and a long straight drive is required. The second shot is played downhill with the green surrounded on three sides by steep banks. It is often better to leave the ball just short of the green in two, as chipping from the sides or back can be very tricky.

Hole 10 - Par 4, 281 yards

The start of the back 9 is another great short par 4 of 281 yards. Few will be tempted to try and drive the green as the camber of the land falls away in front of the green and it is a very small target to

aim at. A fairway wood or hybrid played into position leaves a short pitch into the green. The holes defence is in its green, which slopes from left to right and a putt from above the hole or across the green demands all of a golfer’s concentration.

Hole 11 - Par 4, 393 yards

The eleventh hole is the start of Rothley’s “Amen corner”. The hole at 393 yards isn’t a monster, but often plays much longer. The drive appears tighter than it is, but must be well hit and well positioned to offer the best chance of hitting the green in two. The camber of the fairway tends to take the ball towards the two fairway bunkers, so the perfect drive needs to hug

the left side of the fairway which brings the out of bounds into play. The approach shot is played uphill to an elevated two tier green. A narrow target with run offs on both sides and only a purely struck shot will find the green. If you miss the green a delicate chip is required to help try and save par.

Hole 12 - Par 3, 192 yards

The twelfth is the last of Rothley’s Par 3’s and also the longest at 192 yards. A great par 3, with mature trees and a ditch down its left flank. The green is long and narrow, with a large false front. Two well positioned bunkers either side of the green await any shot not on line. If you

12 www.rothleypark.co.uk

hit the green on the 12th in regulation you know you have hit a good shot.

Hole 13 - Par 4, 423 yards

Hole thirteenth measures 423 yards and is often played into the prevailing wind. A generous driving hole, it pinches in at 240 yards where a track crosses the fairway. The second shot plays up a gentle slope to a large heavily undulating green. The green is shared with the 4th hole and is probably the hardest of all the greens. Not only does the green slope from back to front, but also following the old ridge and furrow lines can create some big swinging putts. Those that play regularly at Rothley will always try and stay below the hole.

Hole 14 - Par 4, 450 yards

The fourteenth is the last of Rothley’s “Amen corner”. At 450 yards long it is only just shorter than the 9th hole and, like the 13th, often plays into the prevailing wind. The drive needs to be very accurate to avoid three, well placed fairway bunkers, which if found make reaching the green in two almost impossible. Another strong shot will be needed if the green is to be reached in two. If you have played “Amen corner” close to your handicap, you have done well.

Hole 15 - Par 5, 521 yards

The fifteenth is the first par 5 to be played. The hole is 521 yards long, but is played downhill all the way. It offers a great chance for a birdie, but with out of bounds on both sides it can often appear that you are trying to hit your tee shot through the eye of a needle. With the tee shot safely negotiated the hole offers a wonderful vista down to the green. On the left side of the hole is the Great Central Railway line. Steam trains can often be seen going up and down the line, but don’t let them put you off your golf! The green itself runs from front to back, so it is important to judge approach shots carefully.

www.rothleypark.co.uk 13

Course Tour Continued

Hole 16 - Par 4, 391 yards

Hole sixteenth offers some respite from some demanding driving holes and allows you to open your shoulders. A par 4 of 391 yards, the tee shot is played uphill with the longer hitters able to carry the slope. A bunker on the right hand side can catch a slightly pushed drive. After a good drive an inviting second shot awaits to a generous green. The green is long from front to back, almost 40 yards, so club selection is important to avoid having a long putt.

Hole 17 - Par 4, 368 yards

The seventeenth hole at 368 yards offers long hitters a chance to cut the dogleg by driving over two fairway bunkers, but with a 255-yard carry it has to be a good shot. A more sensible route is to play to the right of the bunkers, which gives a view straight up a long but very narrow green. The green has a bunker on the left and roll off area on the right. Golfers need to be pinpoint with their approach to not fall foul of either of these. The 17th can yield both birdies and bogies and often plays a pivotal role in tight matches.

14 www.rothleypark.co.uk

Hole 18 - Par 5, 515 yards

The final hole at Rothley is a 515-yard, par 5, with a severe dogleg. Golfers may be tempted to get as close as they can to the Rothley brook with their tee shot, but a much better line is to aim at the large beech tree in the distance. Once at the corner of the dogleg, golfers have a super view of the rest of the hole and the awaiting clubhouse.

Several fairway bunkers dot the fairway to catch wayward shots but, if safely negotiated, a pitch to arguably one of the best greens in the Midlands is left. Whilst on first sight the green does not seem too much of an obstacle, there is a good fall from front to back and left to right. Any approach shot that finishes above the hole leaves a wickedly quick and breaking putt. There are never any ‘gimmies’ on this hole.

Gentlemen

The men’s section at Rothley Park Golf Club is one of the friendliest around, and many members have a keen interest in competitive golf.

Throughout the year the men’s section offers a wealth of opportunities for you to play both competitive and friendly golf. From April through to October we have weekly club competitions on a Saturday in the form of Medal and Stableford rounds. In addition there is a weekly Tuesday and Sunday medal.

When fixed competitions are not taking place in the summer and throughout the winter months, there is an optional Saturday morning competition which is a friendly Stableford format - an ideal way for new members to mix in with the regulars.

There are also individual and pairs trophy knockout summer and winter competitions.

All members are welcome to enter these competitions and, if you need a playing partner, our professional team will be happy to help arrange this for you. The small membership enables all members to be assured a place in all of these competitions and quickly find they are playing with familiar faces.

Mixed social competitions are organised throughout the year with twelve hole competitions on Friday evenings, which are very popular throughout spring and summer. Meals are provided afterwards by our excellent catering team and, weather permitting, include barbecues with drinks on the terrace overlooking the first and eighteenth holes.

If you enjoy après-golf, there will always be a place for you at the bar. Our teams participate in a number of regular matches against local clubs, making sure that the thirst for competitive golf is also met. Although being competitive is important to maintain a handicap, a balance of all good things are required, which is why we provide regular social and mixed golf where the chance to grow long and

24 www.rothleypark.co.uk

lasting friendships is always on the cards for our members.

Ladies

We have one of the largest ladies section in the County, which covers all age groups including full playing, intermediate, seniors, and juniors. We have a full range of club competitions in the summer months to encourage all members to play competitive golf and make new friends. These are held every Tuesday with an additional opportunity to play on Saturdays or Sundays for those members who are unable to play on a Tuesday.

There are knockout competitions in both the summer and winter and a mixed winter league played with our men’s section.

We also hold mixed competitions in the summer to further encourage integration with our friends and partners in the men’s section.

Scratch and Handicap teams play County league matches. Friendly matches also take place during the summer months, where ladies of all standards of golf are given an opportunity to enjoy playing against other clubs. Rothley has a thriving mixed team, which plays a full set of fixtures during the summer.

Seniors Rothley Park has a thriving senior section comprised of gentlemen between the ages of 55 and 80+.

In addition to the main club competitions (see the men’s section) there is a roll up on Mondays , which allows any senior club member to participate. During the winter months other fun events are also organised, such as High/Low Am/Am’s, 6 Club Challenges, Eclectic and Foursomes knockouts. The main summer season also includes many friendly but competitive matches against other local clubs.

The senior section offers a way of obtaining regular weekday social and competitive golf. The club’s senior section is truly one of the strongest in the area, providing plenty of opportunities to get involved with social events throughout the year as well.

Our PGA team can provide you with tailored golf tuition and a state of the art custom club fitting service so that the golfer can have a set of clubs made specifically suited to their swing, rather than having to adapt their technique to fit a piece of equipment bought off the rack.

The pro shop is also the place to go to hire pull and electric trolleys, while there are some electric buggies, which can be hired too, although booking in advance is advisable.

Tuition

Whether you’re an accomplished player or simply looking to get into the game, the quickest and easiest way to play better golf and lower your scores is to book a lesson with our PGA professionals. Rothley Park is blessed with three talented Professionals who are always on hand to assist and advise.

We have several styles of tuition to suit your need from a personal one-to-one lesson on our practice ground, to oncourse tuition, where technique and the tactical side to the game can be addressed at the same time. Learning the correct thought process can often be an eye-opening and rewarding experience for the amateur player and can lead to better scores.

We understand golf is a ‘game for life’, so our lessons are tailor-made to suit the individual, aiming towards improving people’s performance and enjoyment

of the game. This is achieved through precise swing analysis followed by clear instruction and easy-to-follow practice drills, which allows us to install solid foundations and good fundamentals, as well as combining the individual’s own natural flair and style.

To book a lesson contact the Pro Shop by calling 01162 302809.

Meet the PGA Team

Danny Spillane

Notable amateur achievements include County Boys Champion, Midland Boys Champion, County Boys Captain and youngest ever winner of the Club Championship at 15 years old.

Turning professional at 17, Danny soon moved from Lingdale GC to Rothley Park where, under the then club pro, Peter Dolan, he completed his training, becoming one of the country’s youngest qualified professionals at 20 years old.

The County Assistants championship was won during this time. The Parque da Floresta resort in Portugal was Danny’s

next port of call, where he was the teaching professional. This role saw him promoted to becoming the director of golf, overseeing the resort’s £1 million turnover at the age of 24.

Katie Tebbett

Katie turned professional in 1995 after playing full time amateur golf for a number of years. During which time she won The English Ladies Stroke Play Championship (1990) and the Scottish Ladies Open Stroke Play Championship in (1994).

Katie joined the Ladies European Tour in 1996 and then went on to the Futures Tour

in America in 1997. She divided her time between these two tours playing full time tournament golf through until 2001.

Katie qualified as a full member of the PGA in 2009, finishing 14th in the Titleist Trainee of the Year awards.

Harry Schiltz

Harry is in his 3rd year PGA training and joined us as an assistant professional after being a junior here. One of Harry’s responsibilities will be to assist Katie with the Golf Access programme (www. golfaccess.co.uk) to encourage our junior members as their skills improve.

Custom Fitting

There has been a growing realisation in recent times that golfing tuition ought to go hand-in-hand with equipment that allows each player to make the absolute utmost of whatever level of natural talent they possess.

Clubs merely bought off the shelf will be of a standard specification but unfortunately, golfers are not, coming in all shapes and sizes.

The reality is that a golfer could have a perfectly acceptable technique but still be held back because their clubs are not entirely suited to their swing.

This is where custom fitting comes in, a relatively new phenomenon that allows a set of clubs to be built to marry with each golfer’s individual physique and swing characteristics.

Custom fitting is something that we take seriously here at Rothley Park and we pride ourselves in what we do. We offer a full and extensive range of clubs, which are available for custom fitting. This service costs less than you think and can bring about a dramatic improvement in ball striking.

Even the top touring professionals struggle to maintain the same fundamentally sound swing characteristics every time, so it is a lot to ask for the average golfer to do likewise.

Customising the clubs to ensure the golfer is in the ideal position for their physical characteristics will train them to address the ball with the correct posture and swing along the ideal swing plane, which all adds up to the correct impact position and better scores

Bradgate Park & Swithland Wood

With panoramic views over nearby Bradgate Park, Rothley Park Golf Club is on the doorstep of one of the country’s oldest Country Parks.

Bradgate Park was first enclosed as a deer park around 800 years ago. Extending to 830 acres of publicly accessible countryside, the park has a wild and rugged aspect that you do not expect to find so close to the city, with dramatic rocky outcrops and gnarled old oak trees, many of which are well over 500 years old. The River Lin runs through the Lower Park and is a popular spot to sit and picnic or just sit and watch the deer while children paddle in the shallows.

Swithland Wood is an attractive and atmospheric area of Ancient Woodland, covering 155 acres and rich in history and wildlife. Designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, Swithland Wood is an important habitat for a wide range of plant and animal species.
