“I cannot speak highly enough of the care my aunt has received since entering the home eight months ago. The home is not too large so ensuring the residents have individual care which to me appears continual. Welcome
Established over 100 years ago in 1911 Rothley Park Golf Club, an England Golf Championship venue, is situated in a beautiful parkland setting in Leicestershire, offering a unique challenge to golfers of all abilities.
The policy of maintaining a smaller membership than other clubs means that the course is never over played and remains open and playable on almost every day of the year (including the greens). Tee availability is also easy.
Our long established course is 6,501 yards off the white tees and is often rated in magazines and online reviews as one of the best in the county. It is a real test to challenge golfers of all abilities.
We only use pre-booking of tee times for societies and for members’ competitions. Playing at Rothley Park means you can really enjoy the quiet fairways of one of Leicestershire’s finest courses.

As well as offering a demanding but enjoyable course, Rothley Park also has a long history of successfully hosting golf societies, private functions, lunches, golf days and events. 2016 saw the English Seniors Open staged at Rothley Park and also nearby local course Kirby Muxloe.
A prestigious Leicestershire golf course close to the stunning beauty of Bradgate Park and Swithland Woods, you can be sure of fabulous views across the county from Bradgate’s tallest hill and Leicestershire’s second highest point – some 690 feet above sea level. It really is worth taking some time to appreciate this Country Park and its history when you visit.
Be assured you are guaranteed a warm welcome at Rothley Park and our friendly staff will ensure your visit is a memorable one. We provide everything that a golfer would expect at a well-established club. The Professional Shop stocks a full range of equipment and clothing while expert tuition and practice areas offer the opportunity to work on your game and lower your handicap.

History
Rothley Park’s history dates back over one hundred years and is one of the oldest established clubs in Leicestershire. The first recorded meeting of the Rothley Park Golf Club was held in the clubhouse on 23rd August 1911. At that meeting, chaired by the President, Major Abbott Robinson, the Greens and House Committees were elected, the list of Gentlemen and Lady Members proposed and seconded and the Rules and Regulations agreed. It was noted that ‘no Caddies were to be allowed on a Sunday’, and the club’s existence commenced.
7
The land comprising the course, which was part of the Temple Estate owned by Mr F. Merttens who, as such, was also the proprietor of the club. Work commenced on the course in earnest and the full eighteen holes were opened for play in 1912. An exhibition match between Harry Vardon, JH Taylor and James Braid was arranged on the then ‘Rothley Links’. This coincided with the official opening of the clubhouse and a photograph of the event hangs in the clubhouse today. In 1915 the members took over ownership of the club, the constitution was altered and the Rothley Park Golf Course Company Limited was registered
to administer the lease of the land. This arrangement continued until January 1977 when the members took the courageous decision to purchase the course, all of its buildings and 20 acres of surrounding farmland. As a result the club’s future was secured and placed in full control of the members, and this remains the case today. Today, the club is a fine example of how to run a golf club successfully and, while many things have changed since our inception, our dedication to offering the best course in the region is still as strong today as it was in those pioneering days at the beginning of the 19th century.

About the Course
9
Rothley Park is set in a beautiful parkland setting in Leicestershire, offering a unique challenge to golfers of all abilities. Our long established course is 6,501 yards off the white tees and is often rated in magazines and online reviews as one of the best in the county.
The course also runs adjacent to some of The Great Central Railway, which is the UK’s only double track, main line heritage railway. It’s the only place in the world where full size steam engines can be seen passing each other – just as it was when steam ruled the rails!
The parkland course makes the most of the natural contours and slopes of the area and offers some stunning views from the highest point on the course at the 9th tee out over Bradgate Park, where you can savour the views of the Old John folly at the Park’s highest point.
Each hole provides its own challenge, with the undulating fairways and subtle borrows on the well-maintained greens adding to this demanding yet delightful test of golf.
The course contains three par threes, thirteen par fours and two par fives, making it a tricky par-71 parkland course, while the signature hole throughout the 18 is undoubtedly the par four, 457yard 9th, which is not only stroke index one on the course but also demands superb accuracy to avoid a slip up as you approach a green like an upturned bowl. This can often be pivotal in a match pay scenario before the back nine commence. For more information on the course’s condition and availability please call 01162 302809

Course Tour
If you have never played at Rothley Park Golf Club before you are in for a treat. Make the most of your trip by learning about some of the pitfalls that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you follow our hole-by-hole tour. Hole 1 - Par 4, 392 yards The opening hole at just under 400 yards would anywhere else in the round seem like a straightforward hole. However, to add to 1st tee nerves there is out of bounds on the left and the right! A good drive leaves a straightforward approach to a generous green. The second shot is deceptively uphill, so make sure you club up.
www.rothleypark.co.uk
Hole 2 - Par 4, 349 yards The 2nd hole, measuring 349 yards, is a slight dogleg to the left. The tee shot is played across the Rothley brook with the premium being on accuracy over length. A shot of around 220 yards sets up the approach shot, which is played to a raised two-tiered green. Take note of which tier the flag is on, as putting from the wrong one can be tricky. Hole 3 - Par 4, 428 yards The 3rd hole is a strong par 4 of 428 yards. The tee shot is played uphill and demands both length and accuracy from a golfer. Trees hug the left side of the fairway and out of bounds awaits any
tee shots hit too far to the right. A long approach is played to a green guarded by bunkers on either side. The challenge doesn’t stop when the player gets to the green: a spine runs down the length of the green, which can make judging line and pace fiendishly difficult. Hole 4 - Par 3, 160 yards The 4th hole is the first par 3 on the course. The green is a double green shared with the 13th hole. There is a large fall from right to left across the green and the green follows the contours of ancient ridge and furrow, so it is important to try and leave your tee shot under the hole and the correct length in order to set up an easier birdie putt.
11
Hole 5 - Par 4, 257 yards The 5th hole is a classic risk and reward hole. Measuring only 257 yards, this par 4 tempts you to drive it. Out of bounds hugs the left edge of the hole, so there is no room to miss the green on the left. There is plenty of room on the right hand side, but this leaves a difficult pitch over a bunker to a green that slopes away from the player. A good birdie opportunity, this hole can also be a card wrecker. Hole 6 - Par 4, 448 yards (Par 5 for Ladies) The 6th hole at Rothley is one of the prettiest, but most demanding on the course. At 448 yards long and dog legging
to the left, the drive must be hit down the right hand side of the fairway. Anything hit left will leave you blocked out by trees for the second shot. A player faces a decision for their second shot whether or not to try and carry the ditch that runs across the fairway around 50 yards short of the green. The green itself sits in a dell and for the brave anything carrying the ditch will gather down towards it. Hole 7 - Par 3, 145 yards The 7th hole is the second of the three par 3’s. The shortest hole on the course measuring 145 yards, do not be fooled into thinking this is an easy hole. Played up a steep hill to a narrow two-tiered green,
club selection and accuracy are vital. Four deep bunkers await even a marginally errant shot. A par on this hole is always a good score. Hole 8 - Par 4, 334 yards The 8th hole is 334 yards long and has a semi-blind tee shot. The golfer has a choice of how to play the hole. Use a driver from the tee and hit it straight sets up a short pitch and a good birdie opportunity, but with trees on the right and out of bounds on the left, the penalties for a wayward shot are great. The more conservative will use a 3 wood from the tee and leave a mid-iron to a small but gently sloping green.

Course Tour Continued
Hole 9 - Par 4, 457 yards The 9th hole is the longest par 4 at 457 yards and is stroke index one on the card. The fairway is laid out in front of the golfer, and a long straight drive is required. The second shot is played downhill with the green surrounded on three sides by steep banks. It is often better to leave the ball just short of the green in two, as chipping from the sides or back can be very tricky. Hole 10 - Par 4, 284 yards The start of the back 9 is another great short par 4 of 284 yards. Few will be tempted to try and drive the green as the camber of the land falls away in front of
www.rothleypark.co.uk
the green and it is a very small target to aim at. A fairway wood or hybrid played into position leaves a short pitch into the green. The holes defence is in its green, which slopes from left to right and a putt from above the hole or across the green demands all of a golfer’s concentration. Hole 11 - Par 4, 393 yards The 11th hole is the start of Rothley’s “Amen corner”. The hole at 393 yards isn’t a monster, but often plays much longer. The drive appears tighter than it is, but must be well hit and well positioned to offer the best chance of hitting the green in two. The camber of the fairway tends
to take the ball towards the two fairway bunkers, so the perfect drive needs to hug the left side of the fairway which brings the out of bounds into play. The approach shot is played uphill to an elevated two tier green. A narrow target with run offs on both sides and only a purely struck shot will find the green. If you miss the green a delicate chip is required to help try and save par. Hole 12 - Par 3, 183 yards The 12th is the last of Rothley’s Par 3’s and also the longest at 183 yards. A great par 3, flanked with mature trees and a ditch down its left flank. The green is long and narrow, with a large
13
false front. Two well positioned bunkers either side of the green await any shot not on line. If you hit the green on the 12th in regulation you know you have hit a good shot. Hole 13 - Par 4, 426 yards Hole 13 measures 426 yards and is often played into the prevailing wind. A generous driving hole, it pinches in at 240 yards where a track crosses the fairway. The second shot plays up a gentle slope to a large heavily undulating green. The green is shared with the 4th hole and is probably the hardest of all the greens. Not only does the green slope from back to front, but also following the old ridge and
furrow lines can create some big swinging putts. Those that play regularly at Rothley will always try and stay below the hole. Hole 14 - Par 4, 455 yards The 14th is the last of Rothley’s “Amen corner”. At 455 yards long it is only just shorter than the 9th hole and, like the 13th, often plays into the prevailing wind. The drive needs to favour the left side of the hole to avoid two fairway bunkers, which if found make reaching the green in two almost impossible. Another strong shot will be needed if the green is to be reached in two. If you have played “Amen corner” close to your handicap, you have done well.
Hole 15 - Par 5, 522 yards The 15th is the first par 5 to be played. The hole is 522 yards long, but is played downhill all the way. It offers a great chance for a birdie, but with out of bounds on both sides it can often appear that you are trying to hit your tee shot through the eye of a needle. With the tee shot safely negotiated the hole offers a wonderful vista down to the green. On the left side of the hole is the Great Central Railway line. Steam trains can often be seen going up and down the line, but don’t let them put you off your golf! The green itself runs from front to back, so it is important to judge approach shots carefully.

Course Tour Continued
Hole 16 - Par 4, 391 yards Hole 16 offers some respite from some demanding driving holes and allows you to open your shoulders. A par 4 of 391 yards, the tee shot is played uphill with the longer hitters able to carry the slope. A lone bunker on the left hand side can catch a slightly pulled drive and trees protect the right hand side. After a good drive an inviting second shot awaits to a generous green. The green is long from front to back, almost 40 yards, so club selection is important to avoid having a long putt.
15
Hole 17 - Par 4, 358 yards The 17th hole at 359 yards offers long hitters a chance to cut the dogleg by driving over two fairway bunkers, but with a 255-yard carry it has to be a good shot. A more sensible route is to play to the right of the bunkers, which gives a view straight up a long but very narrow green. The green has a bunker on the left and roll off area on the right. Golfers need to be pinpoint with their approach to not fall foul of either of these. The 17th can yield both birdies and bogies and often plays a pivotal role in tight matches.

Hole 18 - Par 5, 519 yards The final hole at Rothley is a 519-yard, par 5, with a severe dogleg. Golfers may be tempted to get as close as they can to the Rothley brook with their tee shot, but a much better line is to aim at the large beech tree in the distance. Once at the corner of the dogleg, golfers have a super view of the rest of the hole and the awaiting clubhouse.
17
Several fairway bunkers dot the fairway to catch wayward shots but, if safely negotiated, a pitch to arguably one of the best greens in the Midlands is left. Whilst on first sight the green does not seem too much of an obstacle, there is a good fall from front to back and left to right. Any approach shot that finishes above the hole leaves a wickedly quick and breaking putt. There are never any ‘gimmies’ on this hole.

Custom Fitting
There has been a growing realisation in recent times that golfing tuition ought to go hand-in-hand with equipment that allows each player to make the absolute utmost of whatever level of natural talent they possess. Clubs merely bought off the shelf will be of a standard specification but unfortunately golfers are not, coming in all shapes and sizes. The reality is that a golfer could have a perfectly acceptable technique but still be held back because their clubs are not entirely suitable to their swing.
39
This is where custom fitting comes in, a relatively new phenomenon that allows a set of clubs to be built to marry with each golfer’s individual physique and swing characteristics.
Even the top touring professionals struggle to maintain the same fundamentally sound swing characteristics every time, so it is a lot to ask for the average golfer to do likewise.
Custom fitting is something that we take seriously here at Rothley Park and we pride ourselves in what we do. We offer a full and extensive range of clubs, specialising in Callaway and Srixon, which are available for custom fitting.
Customising the clubs to ensure the golfer is in the ideal position for their physical characteristics will train them to address the ball with the correct posture and swing along the ideal swing plane, which all adds up to the correct impact position and better scores.
This service costs less than you think and can bring about a dramatic improvement in ball striking.

Bradgate Park & Swithland Wood
With panoramic views over nearby Bradgate Park, Rothley Park Golf Club is on the doorstep of one of the country’s oldest Country Parks.
Bradgate Park was first enclosed as a deer park around 800 years ago. Extending to 830 acres of publicly accessible countryside, the park has a wild and rugged aspect that you do not expect to find so close to the city, with dramatic rocky outcrops and gnarled old oak trees, many of which are well over 500 years old. The River Lin runs through the Lower Park and is a popular spot to sit and picnic or just sit and watch the deer while children paddle in the shallows.

Swithland Wood is an attractive and atmospheric area of Ancient Woodland, covering 155 acres and rich in history and wildlife. Designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, Swithland Wood is an important habitat for a wide range of plant and animal species.
