Welcome Why do we call the Calendar the ‘Bendy Programme’? Pull it out and fold it along the vertical white lines and you’ll find out why. And you’ll also discover the 2016 Portsmouth Tide Tables conveniently on the reverse. Boat-owning Members find it handy to keep on board. In order to keep your fees under control the RSYC encourages use of the extensive Ocean Village clubhouse facilities and the Gins clubhouse by outside organisations for team building events, meetings and conferences, provided this does not impinge on Members’ enjoyment of their Club. Unsurprisingly, given its spectacular and convenient location, the Ocean Village clubhouse has become a popular venue for weddings since its recent licensing for marriage ceremonies. Royal Southampton takes pride in its Royal warrant – granted in 1877 – and its impressive history, including organising racing at Cowes Week, as part of the ‘Combined Clubs’, as a lead instigator of the Southampton Boat Show and more recently race management for J Class racing and the Olympics. But while we consider ourselves pretty exclusive, we are not excluding – Membership is open to those who have an interest in boats and / or in socialising with like-minded folk who know how to enjoy themselves. So if you are not already a member, come and visit us to see what we have to offer. If you are a member - do take advantage of everything the Club has to offer you. And have a wonderful year!
Dining Here at the Royal Southampton Yacht Club we are proud to locally source our produce to create mouth-watering dishes for all types of events. At Ocean Village we serve lunch Monday to Saturday 12-2pm and Sunday Carvery 123pm. Dinner is served Wednesday and Thursday 7-9pm and Friday and Saturday 7-10pm. Head Chef Glenn Shears and his team will do their best to cater for any dietary requests and request to be informed in advance where possible. On sunnier days our sweeping balcony surrounding the clubhouse offers a perfect setting for al fresco dining whilst enjoying the views of Ocean Village marina. All members receive a generous 15% discount on the menu, which really does offer great value for money. To book a table please contact the restaurant on 02380 210879 during opening hours.

A
Club which goes as back as many years as the Royal Southampton must adapt to the times. Last year we reviewed our joining requirements and concluded that with a modern, mobile population a different approach should be considered. So the ‘Introductory’ Membership category was developed – and has proved very popular. This route to membership avoids the requirement to have two full members to sponsor your application and the need for a formal interview. Just submit the application form and direct debit form for your subscription. (There is the option of annual or monthly payments). This Membership gives you the benefit of access to both of our clubhouses - Ocean Village and Gins, on the Beaulieu River - plus all sailing and Club social events, as well as 15% discount on all food and drink. Boat owners are also permitted to fly the club Burgee.) Over the first year of your membership you will be invited to several drinks receptions to meet committee members; they will answer any questions you may have and also connect you with other members with similar interests. At the end of the year you are then able to be formally voted in as a full member. If you prefer to join immediately as a full member you need to be sponsored by two full members who have known you for at least two years, and to attend for interview. You will similarly of course be invited to the new member receptions. There is currently no joining fee, whichever route to membership you choose, and both routes provide all the benefits of membership immediately, with only two exceptions: if you wish to fly the Club’s defaced blue ensign on your boat, the warrant cannot be issued for this to those selecting the Introductory option until the end of their first year. The same applies to Club voting rights. So the choice is yours – and there has never been a better time to be a member of the Royal Southampton Yacht Club. Two stunning waterside locations, a varied and exciting programme of activities on and off the water, a member’s discount on all food and drink – and a host of great new friends to be made! Call or email Membership Secretary Maggie Puleston on 02380 223352 / maggie@rsyc.org.uk for an application pack — or go to our website www.rsyc@rsyc.org and click on ‘Join Us’. Frostbite rallies Date 16th Jan 6th Feb
Destination Hamble Gins
HW Portsmouth 1607 0950
Height 4.3 4.3
Once again our year begins with the Frostbite Rallies. These are planned so that the hardier souls whose boats are still afloat can come by water but by restricting the destinations to the mainland all may attend whatever the weather. These rallies are an excellent opportunity to discuss the summer plans for the individual yachts or for newer Members to meet and join in. They can be icebreakers in more ways than one! The destination for our first rally is Mercury Marina where there is plenty of room in the marina and ample car parking too. We will meet in the evening at the Water Edge Restaurant. Our second rally is to Gins and is timed to coincide with the party to celebrate the opening of the clubhouse after the winter break. Whether you come by boat or by car, join us and make a great start to the new cruising season. 18

One of the pleasures of our cruising year is the opportunity to visit some of our reciprocal clubs both near and far. Cruising St Vaast Rally and Beyond Date 28th May
Destination St Vaast
HW Portsmouth 1558
Height 4.2
This is one of the most popular longer distance cruises of the year, possibly because it takes us to one of our favourite destinations. We’ll be hoping for the good weather and longer days promised by the late May Bank Holiday which we hope will also allow those with restricted time to join us for the weekend. Those with more time can cruise in company to other Channel destinations.
Gins Summer BBQ Rally Date 11th Jun
Destination Gins
HW Portsmouth 16.22
Height 4.3
A BBQ is always a popular summer event and when it’s at the Gins clubhouse on the Beaulieu we know we’re in for a good time in good company (whatever the weather!). Take your time to cruise there on Saturday, go alongside the pontoon or pick up a swinging mooring and relax with friends.

Cruising Keyhaven Rally Date 1st July
Destination Keyhaven
HW Portsmouth 0811
Height 4.3
Whilst most of our rallies take us to destinations with pontoons, water and power it is nice to get back to our roots and practice some of the skills of self-sufficiency that attracted us to yachting in the first place. It is the perfect viewpoint to watch the ISC Round the Island Race. The plan is to sail down the Western Solent on Friday, anchor, and either a BBQ or visit to Keyhaven Sailing Club, and then watch the fleet go past early on Saturday morning before we move on to Lymington or Yarmouth.
Island Harbour Rally Date 27th Aug

HW Portsmouth 1911

Our August Bank Holiday visit to Island Harbour offers the opportunity of a final long family weekend before the end of the school holidays. Enjoy a lively dinner with raffles and fun all in aid of the RNLI. There’ll also be a prize giving for those who join in the short central Solent race and whose entry fees also go into the charity pot. There’ll be a raffle of great prizes and Peter Raw will once again be in the chair for an auction of experiences - great Christmas presents for kids young and old!
Newtown Rally Date 12th Nov
Destination Newtown Creek

Fully Crewed Racing
R
oyal Southampton Yacht Club is proud to offer one of the most comprehensive programmes of year round fully crewed racing of any Solent yacht club. Many of our events are run on Southampton Water adjacent to our Ocean Village clubhouse and offer challenging and competitive racing but without the Solent chop. Southampton Water is in easy reach of Southampton, Hythe, Hamble and Cowes marinas and offers scope for a wide variety of racing using fixed and laid race marks to suit the sailing wind. Conditions are generally more sheltered than the Solent whilst the funnelling effect of the channel sometimes means that we have enough sailing breeze when conditions in the Solent are too light. Many races are dual scored for both IRC and Club rated boats. Typically there will be racing for two or three classes but we are always willing to establish a class for six or more similar boats. Races are normally followed by a prize giving in the Ocean Village clubhouse bar where hot food and a warm welcome await.
Sunday Morning Racing Between January to May and October to November we race on Sunday mornings. Typically we run two races per morning, each of around an hour’s duration starting at 10.00 with racing normally finishing in time for lunch.
Thursday Evening Racing Between May and August our Southampton Water racing is held on Thursday evenings with a mixture of pursuit and average lap races; one per evening. White sail and double handed boats are welcome. Get out on the water after a hard day at the office; enjoy the hours racing and the sunset before heading back to the Ocean Village clubhouse bar for prize giving. www.rsyc.org.uk

Double Handed Racing
W
e are proud to organise what is probably the most popular double handed racing in the country. The innovations introduced in 2014 gave the Series yet another boost and will be seen again in the 2016 season: Inshore, Alongshore and Offshore Series. Each will consist of four races but now with one discard. The Island and Nab races are part of the Alongshore Series. The Main series will comprise all twelve races with five discards. The new Mike Golding Trophy will once again reward the best contribution to the spirit of double handed racing. If you’ve not raced double handed, come and see what you’ve been missing! There’s a great atmosphere both on and off the water. In the RSYC Double Handed Series there are individual race class prizes and trophies, plus class trophies for the Inshore, Alongshore, Offshore and Main Series. The annual double handed prizegiving will be on Saturday, October 29. SPRING SOLENT DOUBLE (Inshore) Saturday, 9th April The first race of the season and of the Main and Inshore Series. Three or four hours racing of a passage flavour in the Solent. A race prizegiving and welcome at the Ocean Village Clubhouse after racing. WEYMOUTH DOUBLE (Offshore) Saturday, 30th April / Sunday, 1st May The first and second races of the Offshore Series this year are daytime races to and from Weymouth. There will be the usual celebration and prizegiving at the Royal Dorset Yacht Club on the Saturday evening. CHERBOURG DOUBLE (Offshore) Friday, 27th May The first cross-Channel race and the third in this year’s Offshore Series. This popular race starts in the central Solent on Friday evening to provide a daylight landfall. This is the second May Bank Holiday weekend so there’s extra time for the trip home after a prizegiving on Saturday evening. LAID MARKS DOUBLE and SUMMER DOUBLE (Inshore) Saturday, 11th June This Saturday racing will combine races two and three of the Inshore series on one day. Racing will be in the central Solent. The Laid Marks Double will be of around 90 minutes and the Summer Double will be an around the cans race of around two to three hours. As ever, there’ll be a chance to compare performances at an evening prizegiving. WEST PRINCESSA DOUBLE (Alongshore) Saturday, 25th June This first of the Alongshore Series races will start and end in the Solent but take boats east to West Princessa Buoy. Once again, there’ll be a party and a prizegiving at a Solent destination after the race with plenty of time to get home on Sunday. ISLAND DOUBLE (Alongshore) Saturday, 16th July Always the most popular of the double handed races, regularly attracting more than 100 boats. This year we’ll again use the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club’s line for our start and finish off Cowes. Circumnavigate the Isle of Wight and collect a pair of engraved glasses as well as competing for the usual prizes and trophies! www.rsyc.org.uk

Double Handed Racing POOLE BAR DOUBLE (Alongshore) Saturday, 30th July Number three in the Alongshore Series, the Poole Bar Double will start and end in the Solent. There’ll be a prizegiving and party at a Solent destination after the race with plenty of time to get home on Sunday. ST PETER PORT DOUBLE (Offshore) Friday, 27th August The longest and the last of the 2016 Offshore Series. This race over the August Bank Holiday can be challenging but a great welcome awaits us; plus it offers the opportunity to linger on the other side of the Channel and cruise home. NAB TOWER DOUBLE (Alongshore) Sunday, 18th September This is the classic race of around 30 nm from the central Solent to the Nab Tower and back and concludes the 2016 Alongshore Series. This year it will again follow on (but is separate from) the two days of the IRC National Championships (see below). AUTUMN SOLENT DOUBLE (Inshore) Saturday, 15th October The concluding race of the Inshore and Main Series takes us on a three or four hour race with a passage flavour in the Solent. A warm welcome awaits at the Ocean Village prize giving after racing. 2016 IRC DOUBLE HANDED NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS, 16th-17th September This event and its three races are separate from the double handed Main Series. The racing will be on Friday, September 16 and Saturday, September 17 and will comprise three high quality races to find the IRC National Class Champions plus an overall IRC Champion. The evenings will see prizegivings and celebrations in Cowes. See rsyc.org.uk and mini-site dhnationals.co.uk for more details. ANNUAL PRIZE GIVING DINNERS The 2016 Double Handed Prize Giving will be on Saturday, October 29, 2016 The 2016 Fully Crewed Prize Giving will be on Saturday, February 4, 2017

SAILING SEMINARS Our occasional Sailing Seminars are held mainly from October to March. These popular talks and presentations may be about any relevant topic of general interest. Usually they’ll follow on from one of the Club’s equally popular and excellent value Thursday 7pm. carvery suppers although and exception will be Jimmy Cornell’s talk about the North West Passage on Tuesday 1st March.
RADIO CONTROLLED BOATS Started in 2012, our Radio Controlled Boats section is flourishing and will again be offering a wide range of events throughout 2016. There are seminars, talks and workshops at both the Gins and Ocean Village Clubhouses and as more and more Members discover the fascination of this sport we plan to hold more competitive and class racing events. Members of other RC boat clubs can have limited use of our clubhouses for specific events but can also take advantage of our Introductory Membership offers for full use of the Club’s great venues. Details of all Radio Controlled Boat events in 2016 are in the Cub programme and will be publicised in our e-bulletins, posters and on the website.
DINGHY SECTION The generosity of a variety of donors and Club Members has allowed us to accumulate a growing fleet of dinghies based, like our Cadet Section, at our Gins clubhouse on the River Beaulieu. The boats are available to Club Members of all ages. Our aim is to encourage a thriving community of dinghy sailors based mainly, but not exclusively on Gins. The Club diary has details of a wide range of dinghy events in 2016 including the RYA ‘Push the Boat Out’ event in May and Friday evening dinghy sailing for all at Gins through the summer. If you’d like to start or re-start dinghy sailing please keep an eye on the rsyc.org.uk website or contact us for more details.

Cadet Sailing 2016
W
e see it as one of our fundamental responsibilities to encourage youngsters to get involved in our sport and to give them a safe and friendly introduction to what we hope may become a lifetime’s pleasure. Our Cadet events run though the year mainly in school holidays and mainly from our Gins clubhouse on the River Beaulieu. These family orientated but fully formally supervised days and weekends offer sailing and boating in a range of craft and a real chance for young people to gain hands-on experience. Often Cadets are related to RSYC Members but that’s not a pre-requisite: All are welcome. Please see our 2016 diary of cadet events and contact us for more details.

Training
T
he RSYC is a fully accredited RYA Training Centre. We provide a range of both practical and theory courses to Club Members and nonmembers alike.
Theory courses are, in the main, held at the Club. Powerboat Level 2 courses are held on local waters using the Club’s own Ribcraft 585 powerboat. There is also a very healthy training scheme for those Members wishing to progress through the RYA qualified race officer scheme and, once again, practical training takes place on the Club committee boat, a Mitchell 31, and the Ribcraft 585. From time to time, a one day structured safety programme for man-overboard training and flare demonstration is run to allow Members to practise on their own boats those aspects not normally covered by other courses. The recovery of a dummy from the water using own methods being the main exercise, but the opportunity to handle and fire flares is also part of the day’s activities.
The RYA Courses offered include: Basic Navigation and Safety Theory; Day Skipper Theory; Yachtmaster Theory; Sea Survival; ISAF Offshore Safety Certificate; Diesel Engine; GMDSS VHF; RADAR; First Aid; ISAF Personal Safety. Powerboat Level 2 and practical ‘own boat’ assessments for the International Certificate of Competence (ICC) together with Inland Waterways. CEVNI Endorsements are also offered. All courses are run by fully qualified RYA instructors. Given sufficient numbers, other courses and course dates can be arranged in addition to those currently listed in the Club programme. Please keep an eye on the Training area of the website for more details. Visit the RSYC Website and subscribe to our e-bulletins for all the latest information. Information and updates about all our on the water events from cruising, racing, training and seminars to dinghies, cadets and radio controlled boats are in the Club programme and will also appear in our regular e-bulletins and on the website.
